Abstract
Hydroxyapatite attracts great attention as hard tissues implant material for bones and teeth. Its application in reconstructive medicine depends on its biocompatibility, which is in a function of composition and surface properties. The insertion of a protein element in the composition of implants can improve the cell adhesion and the osseointegration. Having this in mind, the proposal of this work was to develop L-alanine-grafted hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and to study their biocompatibility. Two L-alanine sources and three grafting methods were used for hydroxyapatite surface functionalization. The efficiency of grafting was determined based on X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal analyses, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated the formation of hydroxyapatite with 8-25 wt% of organic content, depending on the grafting method. Protein adsorption, cell adhesion, and viability studies were carried out to evaluate biological properties of grafted materials. The viability of MG-63 human osteoblastic cells following 24 h incubation with the alanine-grafted hydroxyapatite samples is well preserved, being in all cases above the viability of cells incubated with hydroxyapatite. The alanine-grafted hydroxyapatite prepared in situ and by simple mixture showed higher protein adsorption and cell adhesion, respectively, indicating their potential toward use in regenerative medicine.

Abstract
The insufficient volume of dental ridges is one of the most severe problems regarding an oral cavity. An inadequate amount can cause problems during various types of dental treatment. Its complexity originates from the etiopathogenesis of this problem. In this study, the representatives of auto-, allo-, and xenografts are compared. The physic-chemical differences between each of them were evaluated using XRD (X-ray Powder Diffraction), a SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), FT-IR (Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy), and TGA (thermogravimetric analysis). Based on the SEM images, it was observed that the origin of the material has an influence on collagen fiber compact level and porosity. Following a comparison of FT-IR spectra and XRD, the crystal and chemical structures were described. Based on TGA, different water concentrations of the investigated materials, their high thermal stability, and concentration of inorganic phase, hydroxyapatite was determined. The presented study is important because it delivers information about chemical structure and its impact on bone regeneration. This knowledge should be taken into consideration by dental clinicians, because different types of bone grafts can accommodate the achievement of various goals.

Abstract
In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to the novel drug delivery systems to reduce the dose of the drug and avoid side effects. Metronidazole has been used for many years in the treatment of anaerobic bacterial and protozoal infections. Nanolactoferrin, a newly developed antibacterial agent originated from lactoferrin, is applied both as an active therapeutic and a drug nanocarrier. The present study describes the development and characterization of metronidazole-loaded lactoferrin nanoparticles (nano-MTZ) as well as reports their antitrichomonal activity on Trichomonas gallinae, the protozoal causative agent of pigeon trichomoniasis. The activity of the nano-MTZ is compared with the regular metronidazole formulation (MTZ) under in vitro and in vivo conditions. Additionally, cytotoxicity of the nano-MTZ to fibroblast cell line and possible hepatotoxicity in treated pigeons were evaluated. Nano-MTZ was prepared based on the thermal treatment method and the average size and surface charge of the dispersion were 30.6 nm and - 44.6 mv, respectively. No significant cytotoxicity was noted for the nano-MTZ in comparison to the MTZ. Loading efficiency in nano-MTZ was calculated as 55%. In vitro susceptibility results demonstrated 24 h 90% lethal concentration values of 4.23 and 6.64 µg/mL for MTZ and nano-MTZ, respectively. Oral treatment of the pigeons experimentally infected with T. gallinae resulted in the earlier eradication of the infection in the nano-MTZ-treated pigeons. No adverse effects on the liver function have been observed for the nano-MTZ. These findings suggest that nanolactoferrin is a promising platform for the development of novel MTZ formulations with improved antitrichomonal activity.

Abstract
The ternary HAp/curdlan/nanomagnetite hybrids with ceramic and polymer phase incorporation of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) were fabricated to study their heating ability under action of the alternating magnetic field (AMF), 808 nm near infrared laser radiation (NIR) and their synergic stimulation. The energy conversion was evaluated in terms of the specific absorption rate (SAR) as a function of the MNPs concentration in composites and to estimate their potential in temperature-controlled regenerative processes and hyperthermia. Measurements were carried out on dry and Ringer's solution soaked composite materials in order to mimic in situ conditions. It was found that the MNPs release during prolonged experiment is limited and has no significant effect on energy conversion emphasizing stability of the hybrids. Incorporation of the MNPs in polymer phase of the hybrid can additionally limit particle leaking as well as plays a role as insulating layer for the heat dissipation lowering the risk of sample overheating. In general, it was shown that maximum temperature of hybrid can be achieved in a relatively short time of exposure to stimulating factors whereas its control can be done through optimization of experiment conditions. MNPs incorporation into the curdlan (polymer phase) lead to strengthening of the mechanical properties of the whole network.

Abstract
In the present study, a nanoapatite-mediated delivery system for imatinib has been proposed. Nanohydroxyapatite (nHAp) was obtained by co-precipitation method, and its physicochemical properties in combination with imatinib (IM) were studied by means of XRPD (X-ray Powder Diffraction), SEM-EDS (Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy), FT-IR (Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), absorption spectroscopy as well as DLS (Dynamic Light Scattering) techniques. The obtained hydroxyapatite was defined as nanosized rod-shaped particles with high crystallinity. The amorphous imatinib was obtained by conversion of its crystalline form. The beneficial effects of amorphous pharmaceutical agents have been manifested in the higher dissolution rate in body fluids improving their bioavailability. Imatinib-to-hydroxyapatite interactions on the surface were confirmed by SEM images as well as absorption and FT-IR spectroscopy. The cytotoxicity of the system was tested on NI-1, L929, and D17 cell lines. The effectiveness of imatinib was not affected by nHAp modification. The calculated IC50 values for drug-modified nHAp were similar to those for the drug itself. However, higher cytotoxicity was observed at higher concentrations of imatinib, in comparison with the drug alone.

Rare-earth (Gd 3+,Yb 3+/Tm 3+, Eu 3+) co-doped hydroxyapatite as magnetic, up-conversion and down-conversion materials for multimodal imaging. Sci Rep 2019; 9:16305. Abstract
Taking advantage of the flexibility of the apatite structure, nano- and micro-particles of hydroxyapatite (HAp) were doped with different combinations of rare earth ions (RE3+ = Gd, Eu, Yb, Tm) to achieve a synergy among their magnetic and optical properties and to enable their application in preventive medicine, particularly diagnostics based on multimodal imaging. All powders were synthesized through hydrothermal processing at T ≤ 200 °C. An X-ray powder diffraction analysis showed that all powders crystallized in P63/m space group of the hexagonal crystal structure. The refined unit-cell parameters reflected a decrease in the unit cell volume as a result of the partial substitution of Ca2+ with smaller RE3+ ions at both cation positions. The FTIR analysis additionally suggested that a synergy may exist solely in the triply doped system, where the lattice symmetry and vibration modes become more coherent than in the singly or doubly doped systems. HAp:RE3+ optical characterization revealed a change in the energy band gap and the appearance of a weak blue luminescence (λex = 370 nm) due to an increased concentration of defects. The "up"- and the "down"-conversion spectra of HAp:Gd/Yb/Tm and HAp:Gd/Eu powders showed characteristic transitions of Tm3+ and Eu3+, respectively. Furthermore, in contrast to diamagnetic HAp, all HAp:RE3+ powders exhibited paramagnetic behavior. Cell viability tests of HAp:Gd/Yb/Tm and HAp:Gd/Eu powders in human dental pulp stem cell cultures indicated their good biocompatibility.

Abstract
Hexagonal nanocrystalline powders of the non-doped Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 as well as activated with Ag+ and Eu3+ ions were synthesized by using different wet chemistry methods. Moreover, the obtained hydroxyapatite was loaded with Ag0, as well as nitroimidazole antimicrobials: metronidazole and tinidazole. The structural properties of the products were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy as well as infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy. The photoluminescence properties of the Eu3+ and Ag+ co-doped Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 were characterized via the PL emission, excitation spectra and the luminescence decay curve. The antimicrobial activity of the obtained materials against Prevotella bivia and Parabacteroides distasonis was studied. The cytotoxicity assessment was carried out on the human osteosarcoma cell line (U2OS) as well as human red blood cells (RBC). The choice of the in vitro model was based on the fact that U2OS is a cancer cell line derived from bone tissue which is rich in apatites that play a pivotal role in the extracellular matrix formation. RBCs are the most abundant blood cells and they are used as a cell model in the study of biocompatibility of new prepared biocompounds with potential medical applications. The obtained multifunctional materials do not exhibit the haemolytic activity, therefore, they could be used as a promising antimicrobial agent and for anaerobic bacteria.

Abstract
In response to the need for implant materials characterized by high biocompatibility a new type of nanostructured Ti6Al7Nb implants for osseous tissue regeneration have been fabricated. The nanostructured cylindrical implants were manufactured in accordance with 3D CAD data using the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) method. Implants were subjected to chemical polishing using a mixture of nitric acid and fluoride (test group) as well as cleaned in distilled water and isopropyl alcohol (control group). The structural and morphological properties of the obtained samples were determined by using XRD (X-ray powder diffraction), TEM (transmission electron microscopy) and SEM (scanning electron microscopy) techniques. The particle size was verified and calculated by Rietveld method to be in the range of 25–90 nm. In the present study, experimental in vivo tests concerning implants fabricated from a nanostructured Ti6Al7Nb alloy, which may substitute bone tissue, were discussed in detail. The control group and test group were used in the study. The animal model was New Zealand rabbit. The implants were implanted into skull fornix and observed after 1, 2 and 3 months. The results of macroscopic and microscopic analysis proved better osseointegration of chemically modified implants. In response to the need for implant materials characterized by high biocompatibility a new type of nanostructured Ti6Al7Nb implants for osseous tissue regeneration have been fabricated.![]()

Abstract
Biomaterials are substances manufactured for medical purposes in direct contact with the tissues of organisms. Prior to their use, they are tested to determine their usefulness and safety of application. Hydroxyapatites are used in medicine as a bony complement because of their similarity to the natural apatite therein. Thanks to their bioactivity, biocompatibility, stability and non-toxicity hydroxyapatite are the most commonly used materials in osteoimplantology. The use of materials at the nanoscale in medicine or biology may carry the risk of undesirable effects. The aim of the study was to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of high-temperature annealed nanohydroxyapatites on the L929 murine fibroblasts. Nanohydroxyapatites in powder form were obtained by the wet chemistry method: in the temperature range of 800–1000 °C and used for the study. Based on performed studies evaluating the morphology and fibroblast viability, it was found that nanohydroxyapatites show no cytotoxic effects on the L929 cell line.

Abstract
Spinal cord injuries (SCI) often require simultaneous regeneration of nerve tissue and bone. Hydroxyapatites are described as bioresorbable materials with proper biocompatibility and osteoconductivity, therefore its application for spinal surgery is considered. In this paper, we present repeatable method for developing nanocrystalline calcium hydroxyapatites structurally modified with Li+ ions (nHAP:Li+). Obtained biomaterials were profoundly characterized in terms of their physicochemical properties. Moreover, we have shown that nHAP:Li+ doped with europium (Eu3+) may serve as a theranostic agent, what additionally extend its potential usage for SCI treatment. The biocompatibility of nHAP:Li+ was determined using human olfactory ensheathing cells (hOECs) and adipose tissue-derived multipotent stromal cells (hASCs). Both population of cells are eagerly applied for cell-based therapies in SCI, mainly due to their paracrine activity. The extensive in vitro studies showed that nHAP:Li+ promotes the cells proliferation, viability and cell-cell interactions. Obtained results provides encouraging approach that may have potential application in regenerative medicine and that could fulfil the promise of personalized medicine - important in SCI treatment.

Abstract
Osteoconductive drug delivery system composed of nanocrystalline calcium phosphates (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2/β-Ca3(PO4)2) co-doped with Yb(3+)/Er(3+) ions loaded with Tetracycline antibiotic (TC) was developed. Their effect on human adipose derived mesenchymal stromal stem cells (hASCs) as a potential reconstructive biomaterial for bone tissue regeneration was studied. The XRD and TEM measurements were used in order to determine the crystal structure and morphology of the final products. The characteristics of nanocomposites with the TC and hASCs as potential regenerative materials as well as the antimicrobial activity of the nanoparticles against: Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 as a model of the Gram-positive bacteria, Escherichia coli ATCC 8739 of the Gram-negative bacteria, were shown. These combinations can be a promising material for theranostic due to its regenerative, antimicrobial and fluorescent properties.

Abstract
SrTiO3 nanoparticles co-doped with a broad concentration range of Er(3+) and Yb(3+) ions were fabricated using the citric route as a function of annealing temperatures of 500-1000 °C. The effect of a broad co-dopant concentration range and sintering temperature on structural and up-conversion properties was investigated in detail by X-ray diffraction techniques and optical spectroscopy. The TEM technique was used to estimate the mean particle size, which was around 30 nm for the inorganic product annealed at 600 °C. Up-conversion emission color tuning was achieved by particle size control. Power dependence of the green and red emissions was found to be a result of temperature determination in the operating range of SrTiO3 nanoparticles and a candidate for the fast and local microscopic heating and heat release induced by IR irradiation. The color changed from white-red-yellow-green upon an increase of sintering temperature, inducing changes in the surface-to-volume ratio and the number of optically active ions in particle surface regions. The cytotoxic activity of nanoparticles on human red blood cells was investigated, showing no harmful effects up to a particle concentration of 0.1 mg ml(-1). The cytotoxic response of a colloidal suspension of nanoparticles to RBC cells was connected with the strong affinity of SrTiO3 particles to the cell membranes, blocking the transport of important biological solutes.

Abstract
Blue emitting, up-converting NP's of SrTiO3:Tm3+/Yb3+ synthesized using the citric route are biocompatible towards J774.E whereas the cytotoxic effect to U2OS cells is not particle size dependent but most probably is related to Sr2+ ion release.
