Abstract
Food protein-derived peptides have garnered considerable attention due to their potential bioactivities and functional properties. However, the limited activity poses a challenge in effective utilization aspects. To overcome this hurdle, various methods have been explored to enhance the activity of these peptides. This comprehensive review offers an extensive overview of pretreatment, preparation methods, and modification strategies employed to augment the activity of food protein-derived peptides. Additionally, it encompasses a discussion on the current status and future prospects of bioactive peptide applications. The review also addresses the standardization of mass production processes and safety considerations for bioactive peptides while examining the future challenges and opportunities associated with these compounds. This comprehensive review serves as a valuable guide for researchers in the food industry, offering insights and recommendations to optimize the production process of bioactive peptides.

PEGylation of genistein-loaded bovine serum albumin nanoparticles and its effect on in vitro cell viability and genotoxicity properties. Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces 2023; 222:113082. Abstract
Self-assembled bovine serum albumin nanoparticles loaded with the isoflavone genistein have shown apoptosis-mediated cytotoxicity against murine mammary adenocarcinoma F3II cells. Due to their protein nature and small particle size (13-15 nm), their parenteral administration could be affected by possible immunogenic reactions and rapid clearance from the bloodstream. To avoid these problems, PEGylation of the systems was achieved in this work by using a 30 kDa methoxy-polyethylene glycol carbonyl imidazole derivative through the reaction between the carbonyl imidazole group and the amino groups of Lys residues on the protein surface, which was confirmed by a 17% reduction in the available amino groups content measured by the o-phthaldialdehyde method. PEGylated isoforms were obtained, showing an increase of particle size from 13 to 15 nm to around 260 nm, and were purified by SEC-FPLC and characterized by SDS-PAGE, DLS and AFM techniques. The effect of PEGylation on BSAnp-Gen cytotoxicity and genotoxicity against F3II cells was evaluated in vitro by MTT assay, flow cytometry analysis and micronucleus assay. From the results, PEGylation produced an improvement of the biological properties of genistein-loaded nanoparticles in terms of cytotoxicity (lower IC50), not affecting the induction of apoptosis, decreasing the genotoxicity of the systems (less induction of micronucleus formation).

Abstract
An efficient and simple method for the application of PEGylated affinity ligands in precipitative isolation of protein target molecules (TMs) from a biological fluid such as blood serum or small target molecules from an aqueous medium is presented for the first time. This approach is based on the high binding specificity of PEGylated recognition molecules (PEG-RMs) to their TMs and the unique physicochemical properties of PEG that result in their salt-assisted phase transformation. Addition of PEG-RM to blood serum results in the formation of an RM-specific macromolecular complex (PEG-RM + TM → PEG-RM.TM) that undergoes facile salt-assisted phase transformation to a separable semisolid with ammonium sulfate. PEG-RM.TM is then dissociated into its components by pH reduction or an increase of ionic strength (PEG-RM.TM → PEG-RM + TM). PEG-RM is salted out to afford pure TM in solution. The same phenomenon is observed when RM or TM are small molecules. The general applicability of the method was validated by PEGylation of two proteins (protein A, sheep antihuman IgG) and a small molecule (salicylic acid) used as model RMs for the isolation of Igs, IgG, and serum albumin from blood serum. The isolated protein TMs were shown to be pure and aggregate-free by gel electrophoresis and dynamic light scattering (DLS). IgG isolated by this method was further characterized by peptide mass fingerprinting. PEGylated protein A was used to demonstrate the recyclability and scale-up potential of PEG-RM. IgG isolated by this method from blood serum of a hepatitis C-vaccinated individual was tested for its binding to sheep antihuman IgG by UV spectroscopy, and its bioactivity was ascertained by comparison of its enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) result to that of a blood sample from the same individual. Reciprocity of RM and TM was ascertained using PEGylated salicylic acid to obtain pure serum albumin, and PEGylated serum albumin was utilized for near-exclusive isolation of one drug from an aqueous equimolar mixture of three drugs (salicylic acid, 91%; capecitabine, 6%; and deferiprone, 3%). Advantages of this approach, including target specificity and general applicability and celerity, over other affinity methods for the isolation of proteins are discussed at a molecular level.

Abstract
The review summarizes current trends and developments in the polymerization of alkylene oxides in the last two decades since 1995, with a particular focus on the most important epoxide monomers ethylene oxide (EO), propylene oxide (PO), and butylene oxide (BO). Classical synthetic pathways, i.e., anionic polymerization, coordination polymerization, and cationic polymerization of epoxides (oxiranes), are briefly reviewed. The main focus of the review lies on more recent and in some cases metal-free methods for epoxide polymerization, i.e., the activated monomer strategy, the use of organocatalysts, such as N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and N-heterocyclic olefins (NHOs) as well as phosphazene bases. In addition, the commercially relevant double-metal cyanide (DMC) catalyst systems are discussed. Besides the synthetic progress, new types of multifunctional linear PEG (mf-PEG) and PPO structures accessible by copolymerization of EO or PO with functional epoxide comonomers are presented as well as complex branched, hyperbranched, and dendrimer like polyethers. Amphiphilic block copolymers based on PEO and PPO (Poloxamers and Pluronics) and advances in the area of PEGylation as the most important bioconjugation strategy are also summarized. With the ever growing toolbox for epoxide polymerization, a "polyether universe" may be envisaged that in its structural diversity parallels the immense variety of structural options available for polymers based on vinyl monomers with a purely carbon-based backbone.
