Abstract
Enantioseparation by the electromigration-based method is well-established and widely discussed in the literature. Electrophoretic strategies have been used to baseline resolve complex enantiomeric mixtures, typically using a selector substance into the background electrolyte (BGE) from capillaries to microchips. Along with developing new materials/substances for enantioseparations, it is the concern about the green analytical chemistry (GAC) principles for method development and application. This review article brings a last decade's update on the publications involving enantioseparation by electrophoresis for capillary and microchip systems. It also brings a critical discussion on GAC principles and new green metrics in the context of developing an enantioseparation method. Chemical and green features of native and modified cyclodextrins are discussed. Still, given the employment of greener substances, ionic liquids and deep-eutectic solvents are highlighted, and some new selectors are proposed. For all the mentioned selectors, green features about their production, application, and disposal are considered. Sample preparation and BGE composition in GAC perspective, as well as greener derivatization possibilities, were also addressed. Therefore, one of the goals of this review is to aid the electrophoretic researchers to look where they have not.

Abstract
The effect of the combined use of amino acid-based ionic liquids (AAILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with either cyclodextrin- (CD) or cyclofructan- (CF) based chiral selectors for the chiral separation of amphetamine derivatives was investigated in the present study. A non-significant improvement in enantiomeric separation of target analytes was observed when AAILs were combined with either CF or CD. On the other side, a markedly improved chiral separation of enantiomers was obtained using the dual carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin/DES system, highlighting the existence of a synergistic effect. After the addition of 0.5% v/v of choline chloride-ethylene glycol, the resolution of the enantiomers of amphetamine, methamphetamine and 3-fluorethamphetamine, increased from 1.4, 1.1, 1.0 to 1.8, 1.8, and 1.5 min, and the analysis times increased from 19.54, 20.48, 18.71 to 35.71, 35.78 and 32.90 min, respectively. This was not the case for the CF/DES dual system, in which the separation of amphetamines worsened, indicating an antagonistic effect. In conclusion, DESs are a very promising additive in capillary electrophoresis that can improve the separation of chiral molecules in combination with CDs but not CFs.

Abstract
In this work, two chiral methods enabling the separation of ibrutinib enantiomers were developed by Electrokinetic Chromatography. A cyclodextrin (CD) or a mixture of the CD and a chiral ionic liquid (CIL) was used as chiral selector. Using the single CD system, seven neutral and six anionic CDs were tested in a formate buffer at pH 3.0 working in positive and negative polarity, respectively. The use of sulfated-γ-CD (S-γ-CD) and negative polarity originated the best results considering analysis time and enantioresolution. The optimization of the experimental conditions allowed obtaining the separation of ibrutinib enantiomers in an analysis time of 4.2 min with an enantioresolution value of 1.5. The effect of the addition of fifteen CILs on the enantioresolution was evaluated showing that both analysis time and enantioresolution were generally increased. A mixture of S-γ-CD and [TMA][L-Lys] was selected which provided the separation of ibrutinib enantiomers in 8.1 min with an enantioresolution value of 3.3 under the same experimental conditions as in the case of using the single CD system. The enantiomeric impurity (S-ibrutinib) was the first-migrating isomer when using the single CD and the combined CD/CIL systems, as corresponds to the most desirable situation. Both chiral methods allowed the detection of the enantiomeric impurity up to a 0.1% as established by the International Council on Harmonization. After establishing the analytical characteristics of both chiral methodologies developed, they were applied to the enantiomeric determination of ibrutinib in a pharmaceutical formulation for hospital use marketed as pure enantiomer (R-ibrutinib) and to evaluate the stability and ecotoxicity of racemic ibrutinib and R-ibrutinib on Daphnia magna. The developed methodologies enabled, for the first time, the rapid chiral quantitation of ibrutinib in abiotic and biotic matrices.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The root of Paeonia lactiflora is a traditionally-used whitening medicine in China for thousands of years. Although some tyrosinase inhibitors and/or antioxidants such as 1,2,3,4,6-pentagalloylglucose, gallic acid, have been isolated and identified, their tyrosinase inhibition pathway (monophenolase or diphenolase inhibition, or both two) have not been systematically studied and the underlying tyrosinase inhibition mechanism has not been revealed yet. Moreover, the exploring of new natural tyrosinase inhibitors and antioxidants is urgently needed. AIM OF THE STUDY This review aimed to develop a new microplate-based high-resolution tyrosinase inhibition profiling assay and establish a furthermore triple high-resolution monophenolase/diphenolase/radical scavenging profiling for accelerating identification bioactive compounds from complicated plant extract. MATERIALS AND METHODS The targeted isolation and structure elucidation were performed with high-performance liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry and preparative high-performance liquid chromatography. It allows to be a proof of concept with the root of Paeonia lactiflora crude extract as a natural whitening herbal drug. RESULTS The result showed that galloylpaeoniflorin specifically inhibited monophenolase activity. While 1,2,3,4,6-pentagalloylglucose, gallic acid and catechin demonstrated the inhibition towards both monophenolase and diphenolase. Among them, 1,2,3,4,6-pentagalloylglucose can inhibit monophenolase activity was reported for the first time. In addition, antioxidant properties were attributed to catechin, 1,2,3,4,6-pentagalloylglucose and gallic acid. Due to its low content and complicated configuration in the root of Paeonia lactiflora, a new potential tyrosinase inhibitor and radical scavenger which tentatively identified as hexagalloylglucose by high-resolution MS was still need further verification. What's more, the molecular docking unveiled that bioactive enzymatic inhibitors mainly interacted with amino acid catalytic residues of tyrosinase via H-bonds and van der wals, which may be helpful to understand their inhibition mechanisms with tyrosinase in the skin whitening. CONCLUSIONS The platform provided a promising and efficient strategy for the rapid screening of whitening active components from natural sources.

Abstract
Reliable separation of peptides, amino acids and proteins as accurate as possible with the maximum conformation and biological activity is crucial and essential for drug discovery. Polysaccharide, as one of the most abundant natural biopolymers with optical activity on earth, is easy to be functionalized due to lots of hydroxyl groups on glucose units. Over the last few decades, polysaccharide derivatives are gradually employed as effective separation media. The highly-ordered helical structure contributes to complex, diverse molecular recognition ability, allowing polysaccharide derivatives to selectively interact with different analytes. This article reviews the development, application and prospects of polysaccharides as separation media in the separation of proteins, peptides and amino acids in recent years. The chiral molecules mechanism, advantages, limitations, development status and challenges faced by polysaccharides as separation media in molecular recognition are summarized. Meanwhile, the direction of its continued development and future prospects are also discussed.

Abstract
There is an interest in the application of ionic liquids as additives into the separation media to improve achiral and chiral separations in electrokinetic chromatography (EKC). This review will critically discuss the developments on the use of ionic liquids in the different modes of EKC during the last five years (2015-mid 2020). A healthy number of 48 research articles searched through Scopus were categorised into two: ionic liquids as sole pseudophase (micelles, microemulsions, ligand exchange pseudophase or molecular pseudophase) and ionic liquids with pseudophase (achiral or chiral). More than half of the papers dealt with chiral separations that were mostly facilitated by another additive or pseudophase. The role of ionic liquids for improvement of separations were analysed, and we provided some recommendations for further investigations. Finally, the use of ionic liquids in different on-line sample concentration or stacking methods (i.e., field enhancement and sweeping) was briefly discussed.

Abstract
Abstract
A new capillary electrophoresis method was applied to chiral separation of three amino acids, including D,L-tryptophan, D,L-tyrosine and D,L-phenylalanine. The chiral resolution was attained in an untreated fused-sillica capillary using a dual chiral selector, which was made up of Cu(II)-L-histidine complex and β-cyclodextrin (CD). The cardinal factors influencing its separation efficiency, such as chiral selectors, buffer pH and applied voltage, were optimized. Best results were acquired by using a buffer consisting of 10 mmol/L Cu(II), 13 mmol/L L-histidine, 8 mmol/L β-CD, 5 mmol/L phosphate adjusted to pH 5.0 and 15 kV applied voltage. All enantiomers were entirely resolved within 20 min with high resolutions of 3.6~6.1. The analysis method was verified through the determination of D,L-tryptophan in terms of linearity, precision and accuracy. And the robustness of this method was proved. The Limit of Detection and Limit of Quantification for both enantiomers were 2.5 and 5 μg/mL, respectively. The method was perfectly applied to the determination of the enantiomeric purity of L-tryptophan. Furthermore, the interaction between Cu(II)-L-histidine complex and β-CD was also studied using Ultraviolet-visible and 1H NMR spectroscopy to explain the synergistic effect involved. The results illustrated that Cu(II)-L-histidine complex and β-CD played a synergistic role in the enantiomeric separation of chiral drugs, with good prospects for application.

Abstract
Several chiral reagents including cyclodextrins (CDs) and derivatives, crown ethers, proteins, chiral surfactants, and polymers have been involved in dual-selector systems for enantioseparation of a series of compounds by capillary electrophoresis (CE). In this paper, chondroitin sulfate D-based dual-selector system (CSD/CM-β-CD) was firstly established and investigated for the enantioseparation of six basic racemic drugs in capillary electrophoresis. Compared to the single-selector systems, synergistic effect and significantly improved separations for all tested analytes were observed in CSD/CM-β-CD system. The effect of several parameters, such as buffer pH, chiral selector concentration, and applied voltage, was systematically optimized. Meanwhile, to investigate the possible chiral recognition mechanisms in CSD/CM-β-CD synergistic system, we tried to apply the molecular docking method to simulate the host-guest binding procedures of the polysaccharide-based dual system for the first time. The difference in binding free energy was found to correspond to the chiral selectivity factor. The existence of CSD-CM-β-CD complex may give rise to a higher discriminatory ability against the enantiomers, indicating the synergistic effect in CSD/CM-β-CD system. Graphical abstract ᅟ.

Abstract
Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is one of the most widely employed analytical techniques to achieve enantiomeric separations. In spite of the fact that there are many chiral selectors commercially available to perform enantioseparations by CE, one of the most relevant topics in this field is the search for new selectors capable of providing high enantiomeric resolutions. Chiral ionic liquids (CILs) have interesting characteristics conferring them a high potential in chiral separations although only some of them are commercially available. The aim of this article is to review all the works published on the use of CILs as chiral selectors in the development of enantioselective methodologies by CE, covering the period from 2006 (when the first research work on this topic was published) to 2017. The use of CILs as sole chiral selectors, as chiral selectors in dual systems or as chiral ligands will be considered. This review also provides detailed analytical information on the experimental conditions used to carry out enantioseparations in different fields as well as on the separation mechanism involved.

Abstract
The combined use of chiral ionic liquids (ILs) and chiral selectors in capillary electrophoresis (CE) to establish a synergistic system has proven to be an effective approach for enantioseparation. In this article, tetramethylammonium-L-arginine, a kind of amino acid chiral IL, was applied to investigate its potential synergistic effect with maltodextrin in CE enantioseparation. The established maltodextrin-based synergistic system showed markedly improved enantioseparations compared with the single maltodextrin system. Parameters such as the chiral IL concentration, maltodextrin concentration, buffer pH, applied voltage, and capillary temperature were optimized. Satisfactory enantioseparation of the five studied drugs, including nefopam, duloxetine, ketoconazole, cetirizine, and citalopram was achieved in 50 mM Tris-H3 PO4 buffer solution (pH 3.0) containing 7.0% (m/v) maltodextrin and 60 mM tetramethylammonium-L-arginine. In addition, the chiral configuration of tetramethylammonium-L-arginine was also investigated to demonstrate the existence of a synergistic effect between chiral ILs and maltodextrin.

Abstract
Cu(II) complexed amino acid ionic liquid, Cu(II)-[1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium][L-Pro] (Cu(II)-[BMIm][L-Pro]), was successfully adopted as chiral ligand to improve the enantioseparation efficiency in high speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC). For the enantioseparation of intractable naringenin (NRG) racemic mixtures, Cu(II)-[BMIm][L-Pro] coupled with hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) was successfully applied as dual chiral selectors in HSCCC. The influence of important parameters, including the concentration of the chiral selectors, the pH value, and the temperature were investigated. Under optimal conditions, 4.5mg of (+)-NRG and 4.1mg of (-)-NRG were successfully separated from 10mg NRG racemic mixtures with the purity of 98%. The chiral recognition mechanism of dual chiral selectors was illuminated by the UV-vis and NMR spectra, suggesting that the enantioseparation was upon the difference of the thermodynamic stability of the quaternary complexes of Cu(II), [BMIm][L-Pro], HP-β-CD, and NRG. The results illustrated that the developed HSCCC system, based on the synergistic mechanism of Cu(II)-[BMIm][L-Pro] and HP-β-CD, exhibited better performance on enantioseparation and had great application potential in preparative chiral separation of natural products.
