Evaluation of the Mechanical Strength and Cell Adhesion Capacity of POSS Doped PVA/CMC Hernia Patch

Peritoneal adhesion typically occurs in applications such as abdominal, pelvic, and vascular surgery. It is necessary to develop a mechanical barrier to prevent adhesion. In this study, a novel biomaterial as a mechanical barrier is developed by combining polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), doped with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) to prevent peritoneal adhesion. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods reveal that POSS nanoparticles in the PVA matrix disrupted the intramolecular hydroxyl groups and structure of the crystal region. Electron microscopy (EM) images reveal that high concentrations of POSS (2 wt.%) cause irregular clustering in the composite matrix. As the concentration of POSS increases in the matrix, the degradation of the membranes increases, and protein adhesion decreases. In vitro cytotoxicity tests show a toxic effect on cells for PVA/CMC composite membranes, while on the other hand, the addition of POSS increases cell viability. According to the MMT test the POSS decreases cell adhesion of membranes. When comparing the POSS doped membrane to the undoped PVA/CMC membrane, an increase in the total antioxidant level and a decrease in the total oxidant level is observed.

Effect of Cellulose-Based Bioplastics on Current LDPE Recycling

The increased use of bioplastics in the market has led to their presence in municipal solid waste streams alongside traditional fossil-based polymers, particularly low-density polyethylene (LDPE), which bioplastics often end up mixed with. This study aimed to assess the impact of cellulose acetate plasticized with triacetin (CAT) on the mechanical recycling of LDPE. LDPE-CAT blends with varying CAT content (0%, 1%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% by weight) were prepared by melt extrusion and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis (thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry), dynamic rheological measurements, and tensile tests. The results indicate that the presence of CAT does not significantly affect the chemical, thermal, and rheological properties of LDPE, and the addition of CAT at different levels does not promote LDPE degradation under typical processing conditions. However, the addition of CAT negatively impacts the processability and mechanical behavior of LDPE, resulting in the reduced quality of the recycled material. Thus, the presence of cellulose-based bioplastics in LDPE recycling streams should be avoided, and a specific sorting stream for bioplastics should be established.

Application of Silsesquioxanes in the Preparation of Polyolefin-Based Materials

This paper is a review of studies on the use of the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) of various structures in the synthesis of polyolefins and the modification of their properties, namely: (1) components of organometallic catalytic systems for the polymerization of olefins, (2) comonomers in the copolymerization with ethylene, and (3) fillers in composites based on polyolefins. In addition, studies on the use of new silicon compounds, i.e., siloxane-silsesquioxane resins, as fillers for composites based on polyolefins are presented. The authors dedicate this paper to Professor Bogdan Marciniec on the occasion of his jubilee.

Silsesquioxane Derivatives as Functional Additives for Preparation of Polyethylene-Based Composites: A Case of Trisilanol Melt-Condensation

In this work, polyethylene (PE) composites were prepared with a series of completely condensed silsesquioxanes (SSQ), as well as with open-cage hepta(isobutyl)trisilanol silsesquioxane. The effect of the additives on the thermal, mechanical, rheological, and crystalline properties of the composites obtained was determined. The dispersion of trisilanol derivative within polymer matrix was slightly better than that of the other isobutyl compounds, suggesting condensation of the additive to less polar products of different structure, which was confirmed by thermogravimetry (TG) and matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry analysis. The additives improved the thermal stability of polyethylene and formed composites of higher rigidity than the neat polyolefin. The results were compared to the literature data, with aminopropylhepta(isobutyl)silsesquioxane and vinylhepta(isobutyl)silsesquioxane being used partially as references, as PE composites thereof were reported earlier, but lacked some analytical results and required further investigation. It was proven that the practical upper loading limit for such silsesquioxane compounds as processing and functional additives for polyethylene should be fixed at around 1%.

Stretchable Conductive Hybrid Films Consisting of Cubic Silsesquioxane-capped Polyurethane and Poly(3-hexylthiophene)

We fabricated stretchable and electric conductive hybrids consisting of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-capped polyurethane (PUPOSS) and doped poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). In order to realize robust films coexisting polar conductive components in hydrophobic elastic matrices, we employed POSS introduced into the terminals of the polyurethane chains as a compatibilizer. Through the simple mixing and drop-casting with the chloroform solutions containing doped P3HT and polyurethane polymers, homogeneous hybrid films were obtained. From the conductivity and mechanical measurements, it was indicated that hybrid materials consisting of PUPOSS and doped P3HT showed high conductivity and stretchability even with a small content of doped P3HT. From the mechanical studies, it was proposed that POSS promoted aggregation of doped P3HT in the films, and ordered structures should be involved in the aggregates. Efficient carrier transfer could occur through the POSS-inducible ordered structures in the aggregates.

Self-assembly of fluoride-encapsulated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanocrystals

CO₂ Separation in Nanocomposite Membranes by the Addition of Amidine and Lactamide Functionalized POSS® Nanoparticles into a PVA Layer

In this article, we studied two different types of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS^®) functionalized nanoparticles as additives for nanocomposite membranes for CO₂ separation. One with amidine functionalization (Amidino POSS^®) and the second with amine and lactamide groups functionalization (Lactamide POSS^®). Composite membranes were produced by casting a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) layer, containing either amidine or lactamide functionalized POSS^® nanoparticles, on a polysulfone (PSf) porous support. FTIR characterization shows a good compatibility between the nanoparticles and the polymer. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) show an increment of the crystalline regions. Both the degree of crystallinity (Xc) and the alpha star transition, associated with the slippage between crystallites, increase with the content of nanoparticles in the PVA selective layer. These crystalline regions were affected by the conformation of the polymer chains, decreasing the gas separation performance. Moreover, lactamide POSS^® shows a higher interaction with PVA, inducing lower values in the CO₂ flux. We have concluded that the interaction of the POSS^® nanoparticles increased the crystallinity of the composite membranes, thereby playing an important role in the gas separation performance. Moreover, these nanocomposite membranes did not show separation according to a facilitated transport mechanism as expected, based on their functionalized amino-groups, thus, solution-diffusion was the main mechanism responsible for the transport phenomena.

Alternating Copolymer of Double Four Ring Silicate and Dimethyl Silicone Monomer-PSS-1

A new copolymer consisting of double four ring (D4R) silicate units linked by dimethylsilicone monomer referred to as polyoligosiloxysilicone number one (PSS-1) was synthesized. The D4R building unit is provided by hexamethyleneimine cyclosilicate hydrate crystals, which were dehydrated and reacted with dichlorodimethylsilane. The local structure of D4R silicate units and dimethyl silicone monomers was revealed by multidimensional solid-state NMR, FTIR and modeling. On average, D4R silicate units have 6.8 silicone linkages. Evidence for preferential unidirectional growth and chain ordering within the PSS-1 copolymer was provided by STEM and TEM. The structure of PSS-1 copolymer consists of twisted columns of D4R silicate units with or without cross-linking. Both models are consistent with the spectroscopic, microscopic and physical properties. PSS-1 chains are predicted to be mechanically strong compared to silicones such as PDMS, yet more flexible than rigid silica materials such as zeolites.
