Abstract
An unprecedented phosphine-catalyzed formal Buchner [6+1] annulation of a newly designed allenoate has been developed, providing a series of cycloheptatriene derivatives in moderate to good yields (up to 99%). This reaction demonstrates that the introduction of an electrophilic allylic group to allenoates effectively extends the reaction scope of phosphine-catalyzed annulation, providing a concise route to cycloheptatrienes. Mechanistic study indicated that this reaction involves a [4+2] Diels-Alder reaction and ring expansion of the bicyclo[4.1.0] moiety, which is similar to the Buchner reaction. Notably, an enantioselective variant of this [6+1] annulation can also be performed using a chiral iminophosphine catalyst.

Abstract
A new phosphine-catalyzed reaction of α-substituted allenes with aryl imines, in stark contrast to classic cycloaddition reactions, has been developed. This reaction delivers valuable highly functionalized itaconimides with excellent stereoselectivities by a new «un-cyclizing» reaction mode involving β'-carbon of α-substituted allenes. Moreover, the present «un-cyclizing» reaction can also be carried out in a one-pot fashion and scaled up to the gram scale by using aryl aldehydes, without the need to isolate the aryl imines. Mechanistic studies and control experiments reveal the crucial role of H2 CO3 for the present reaction mode. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to understand the possible mechanism.

Abstract
Quinoline derivatives are frequently found in natural products and biologically active compounds, however, construction of quinoline fused polyheterocycles is the challenging goal in synthetic organic chemistry. In this regard, quinolinium salts meet the demand to a great level, as they can be synthesized readily and employed effectively for the rapid construction of condensed heterocyclic core. The present review focuses on recent (2015-2021) applications of different quinolinium salts that react with suitable partners to access diverse annulated products. Most of the reactions discussed here involve easily available starting materials, operationally simple, high atom efficiency and environmentally benign. Mechanistic aspects of representative transformations have also been highlighted for better understanding of reaction pathway.

Abstract
Racemic γ-substituted allenes undergo enantioselective higher order [8 + 2]-cycloaddition with azaheptafulvenes using a chiral amino acid derived amidophosphine as catalyst, providing the corresponding azaazulenoid cycloadducts with excellent levels of regio-, diastereo-, and enantioselectivities. In this reaction, the activated allylic phosphonium ylide intermediate participates as the C2-component of the reaction, in contrast to the conventional reactivity of this type of zwitterionic intermediates as C3-components in cycloaddition reactions.

Abstract
The reaction of diphenyl nitrilimine (NI) with methyl 1-methyl-allenoate yielding a spirobipyrazoline has been studied within molecular electron density theory (MEDT) at the MPWB1K/6-311G(d) computational level in dichloromethane. This reaction is a domino process that comprises two consecutive 32CA reactions with the formation of a pyrazoline intermediate. Analysis of the relative Gibbs free energies indicates that both 32CA reactions are highly regioselective, the first one being also completely chemoselective, in agreement with the experimental outcomes. The geometries of the TSs indicate that they are associated to asynchronous bond formation processes in which the shorter distance involves the C1 carbon of diphenyl NI. Despite the zwitterionic structure of diphenyl NI, the appearance of a pseudoradical structure at the beginning of the reaction path, with a very low energy cost, suggests that the 32CA reaction between diphenyl NI, a strong nucleophile, and the allenoate, a moderate electrophile, should be mechanistically considered on the borderline between pmr-type and cb-type 32CA reactions, somewhat closer to the latter.

Abstract
A novel solvent incorporated sequential [3 + 2] cycloaddition/substitution reaction of azomethine imines with propargyl sulfur ylide was developed. In the actual three-component reaction, propargyl sulfur ylide acts as a dipole reagent to furnish the annulation with azomethine imines, followed by the protic solvents acting as nucleophiles. The simple, mild, catalyst-free and practical protocol allows for the formation of N,N-bicyclic pyrazolidinones in moderate to excellent yields. Further transformation and gram-scale operations could also be achieved efficiently.

A Brønsted acid-catalyzed (4 + 3) cyclization of N, N'-cyclic azomethine imines with isatoic anhydrides has been discovered, which constructs seven-membered nitrogenous heterocyclic frameworks with overall high yields (up to 98% yield). This reaction represents a rarely reported (4 + 3) cyclization of N, N'-cyclic azomethine imines, which involves the reassembly of a C-N bond. In addition, this reaction has also accomplished the unprecedented (4 + 3) cyclization of isatoic anhydrides.

Abstract
In recent years, there have been extraordinary developments of organophosphine-catalyzed reactions. This includes progress in the area of [4C+X] annulations, which are of particular interest due to their potential for the rapid construction of 5–8-membered cyclic products. In this short overview, we summarize the remarkable progress, emphasizing reaction mechanisms and key intermediates involved in the processes. The discussion is classified according to the type of electrophilic reactants that acted as C4 synthons in the annulation process, in the order of α-alkyl allenoates, γ-alkyl allenoates, α-methyl allene ketones, β′-OAc allenoate, δ-OAc allenoate, activated dienes and cyclobutenones.

Abstract
The hallmark of nucleophilic phosphine catalysis is the initial nucleophilic addition of a phosphine to an electrophilic starting material, producing a reactive zwitterionic intermediate, generally under mild conditions. In this Review, we classify nucleophilic phosphine catalysis reactions in terms of their electrophilic components. In the majority of cases, these electrophiles possess carbon-carbon multiple bonds: alkenes (section 2), allenes (section 3), alkynes (section 4), and Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) alcohol derivatives (MBHADs; section 5). Within each of these sections, the reactions are compiled based on the nature of the second starting material-nucleophiles, dinucleophiles, electrophiles, and electrophile-nucleophiles. Nucleophilic phosphine catalysis reactions that occur via the initial addition to starting materials that do not possess carbon-carbon multiple bonds are collated in section 6. Although not catalytic in the phosphine, the formation of ylides through the nucleophilic addition of phosphines to carbon-carbon multiple bond-containing compounds is intimately related to the catalysis and is discussed in section 7. Finally, section 8 compiles miscellaneous topics, including annulations of the Hüisgen zwitterion, phosphine-mediated reductions, iminophosphorane organocatalysis, and catalytic variants of classical phosphine oxide-generating reactions.

Abstract
A straightforward phosphine-catalyzed formal [4+2] annulation between α-branched allenoates and arylidene azlactones has been developed to access highly functionalized spirocyclohexenes. This cyclization favors the γ-addition of the phosphine-activated allenoates over a β'-addition pathway. Detailed computational studies support the proposed mechanism and provide a reasonable explanation for the observed regioselectivity and the noted effect of the catalyst.

Abstract
An efficient [4 + 3] annulation of 2-(1-tosylalkyl)phenols with C,N-cyclic azomethine imines via in situ generation of ortho-quinone methides (o-QMs) under mild basic reaction conditions is disclosed, furnishing biologically interesting seven-membered heterocyclic compounds with moderate to good yields and excellent diastereoselectivities. A gram-scale reaction is performed to demonstrate the potential in industrial application and two transition states are proposed to rationalize the outstanding diastereoselectivity.

The double 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of allenoates with nitrilimines has been achieved under mild reaction conditions, affording a variety of spirobidihydropyrazoles in moderate to excellent yields with excellent diastereoselectivities. The reaction diastereoselectively constructs double dihydropyrazole moieties and two chiral centers including a spiro carbon center.

Abstract
A [3 + 2] annulation of α-substituted secondary β-ketoamides with δ-acetoxy-modified allenoate has been developed in the presence of phosphine catalyst. In this spiroannulation reaction, β-ketoamides were used as the bis-nucleophilic partner while the γ,δ-carbon of 5-acetoxypenta-2,3-dienoate participated as a C2 synthon, affording the desired functionalized five-membered N-heterocyclic derivatives in moderate to excellent yields and diastereoselectivities under mild conditions. Preliminary attempts on the asymmetric variant of this reaction have been also examined, giving the corresponding products with moderate ee values.
