Folic Acid Ionic-Liquids-Based Separation: Extraction and Modelling

Folic acid (vitamin B9) is an essential micronutrient for human health. It can be obtained using different biological pathways as a competitive option for chemical synthesis, but the price of its separation is the key obstacle preventing the implementation of biological methods on a broad scale. Published studies have confirmed that ionic liquids can be used to separate organic compounds. In this article, we investigated folic acid separation by analyzing 5 ionic liquids (CYPHOS IL103, CYPHOS IL104, [HMIM][PF₆], [BMIM][PF₆], [OMIM][PF₆]) and 3 organic solvents (heptane, chloroform, and octanol) as the extraction medium. The best obtained results indicated that ionic liquids are potentially valuable for the recovery of vitamin B9 from diluted aqueous solutions as fermentation broths; the efficiency of the process reached 99.56% for 120 g/L CYPHOS IL103 dissolved in heptane and pH 4 of the aqueous folic acid solution. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were combined with Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) for modelling the process, considering its characteristics.

Synthesis, Chemical-Physical Characterization, and Biomedical Applications of Functional Gold Nanoparticles: A Review

Relevant properties of gold nanoparticles, such as stability and biocompatibility, together with their peculiar optical and electronic behavior, make them excellent candidates for medical and biological applications. This review describes the different approaches to the synthesis, surface modification, and characterization of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) related to increasing their stability and available features useful for employment as drug delivery systems or in hyperthermia and photothermal therapy. The synthetic methods reported span from the well-known Turkevich synthesis, reduction with NaBH4 with or without citrate, seeding growth, ascorbic acid-based, green synthesis, and Brust-Schiffrin methods. Furthermore, the nanosized functionalization of the AuNP surface brought about the formation of self-assembled monolayers through the employment of polymer coatings as capping agents covalently bonded to the nanoparticles. The most common chemical-physical characterization techniques to determine the size, shape and surface coverage of AuNPs are described underlining the structure-activity correlation in the frame of their applications in the biomedical and biotechnology sectors.

Functionalized gold nanoparticles for sample preparation: A review

Sample preparation is a crucial step for the reliable and accurate analysis of both small molecule and biopolymers which often involves processes such as isolation, pre-concentration, removal of interferences (purification), and pre-processing (e.g., enzymatic digestion) of targets from a complex matrix. Gold nanoparticle (GNP)-assisted sample preparation and pre-concentration has been extensively applied in many analytical procedures in recent years due to the favorable and unique properties of GNPs such as size-controlled synthesis, large surface-to-volume ratio, surface inertness, straightforward surface modification, easy separation requiring minimal manipulation of samples. This review article primarily focuses on applications of GNPs in sample preparation, in particular for bioaffinity capture and biocatalysis. In addition, their most common synthesis, surface modification and characterization methods are briefly summarized. Proper surface modification for GNPs designed in accordance to their target application directly influence their functionalities, e.g., extraction efficiencies, and catalytic efficiencies. Characterization of GNPs after synthesis and modification is worthwhile for monitoring and controlling the fabrication process to ensure proper quality and functionality. Parameters such as morphology, colloidal stability, and physical/chemical properties can be assessed by methods such as surface plasmon resonance, dynamic light scattering, ζ-potential determinations, transmission electron microscopy, Taylor dispersion analysis, and resonant mass measurement, among others. The accurate determination of the surface coverage appears to be also mandatory for the quality control of functionality of the nanoparticles. Some promising applications of (functionalized) GNPs for bioanalysis and sample preparation are described herein.

Switchable polarity solvents for preconcentration and simultaneous determination of amino acids in human plasma samples

Silica-coated magnetic iron oxide functionalized with hydrophobic polymeric ionic liquid: a promising nanoscale sorbent for simultaneous extraction of antidiabetic drugs from human plasma prior to their quantitation by HPLC

Herein, silica-coated iron oxide nanoparticles modified with imidazolium-based polymeric ionic liquid (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@PIL) were fabricated as a sustainable sorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) and simultaneous determination of trace antidiabetic drugs in human plasma by high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV). The Fe₃O₄ core was functionalized by silica (SiO₂) and vinyl layers where the ionic liquid 1-vinyl-3-octylimidazolium bromide (VOIM-Br) was attached through a free radical copolymerization process. In order to achieve hydrophobic magnetic nanoparticles and increase the merits of the sorbent, Br⁻ anions were synthetically replaced with PF₆⁻. The properties and morphology of the sorbent were characterized by various techniques and all the results illustrated the prosperous synthesis of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@PIL. A comprehensive study was carried out to investigate and optimize various parameters affecting the extraction efficiency. The limit of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) for empagliflozin, metformin and canagliflozin was 1.3, 6.0 and 0.8 ng mL⁻¹, respectively. Linearity (0.997 ≥ r² ≥ 0.993) and linear concentration ranges of 5.0–1200.0, 20.0–1800.0 and 5.0–1000.0 ng mL⁻¹ were obtained for empagliflozin, metformin and canagliflozin, respectively. Intra-assay (3.8–7.5%, n = 9) and inter-assay (3.2–8.5%, n = 12) precisions as well as accuracies (≤9.1%) displayed good efficiency of the method. Finally, the method was applied for the quantitation of antidiabetic drugs in human plasma after oral administration and main pharmacokinetic data including T_max (h), C_max (ng mL⁻¹), AUC_0–24 (ng h mL⁻¹), AUC_0–∞ (ng h mL⁻¹), and T_1/2 (h) were evaluated.

Ultrasonic assisted dispersive solid-phase microextraction of Eriochrome Cyanine R from water sample on ultrasonically synthesized lead (II) dioxide nanoparticles loaded on activated carbon: Experimental design methodology

The present research focus on designing an appropriate dispersive solid-phase microextraction (UA-DSPME) for preconcentration and determination of Eriochrome Cyanine R (ECR) in aqueous solutions with aid of sonication using lead (II) dioxide nanoparticles loaded on activated carbon (PbO-NPs-AC). This material was fully identified with XRD and SEM. Influence of pH, amounts of sorbent, type and volume of eluent, and sonication time on response properties were investigated and optimized by central composite design (CCD) combined with surface response methodology using STATISTICA. Among different solvents, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was selected as an efficient eluent, which its combination by present nanoparticles and application of ultrasound waves led to enhancement in mass transfer. The predicted maximum extraction (100%) under the optimum conditions of the process variables viz. pH 4.5, eluent 200μL, adsorbent dosage 2.5mg and 5min sonication was close to the experimental value (99.50%). at optimum conditions some experimental features like wide 5-2000ngmL^-1 ECR, low detection limit (0.43ngmL^-1, S/N=3:1) and good repeatability and reproducibility (relative standard deviation, <5.5%, n=12) indicate versatility in successful applicability of present method for real sample analysis. Investigation of accuracy by spiking known concentration of ECR over 200-600ngmL^-1 gave mean recoveries from 94.850% to 101.42% under optimal conditions. The procedure was also applied for the pre-concentration and subsequent determination of ECR in tap and waste waters.

Ultrasound assisted combined molecularly imprinted polymer for selective extraction of nicotinamide in human urine and milk samples: Spectrophotometric determination and optimization study

Ultrasound-assisted dispersive solid phase microextraction followed by UV-vis spectrophotometer (UA-DSPME-UV-vis) was designed for extraction and preconcentration of nicotinamide (vitamin B₃) by HKUST-1 metal organic framework (MOF) based molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). This new material was characterized by FTIR and FE-SEM techniques. The preliminary Plackett-Burman design was used for screening and subsequently the central composite design justifies significant terms and possible construction of mathematical equation which give the individual and cooperative contribution of variables like HKUST-1-MOF-NA-MIP mass, sonication time, temperature, eluent volume, pH and vortex time. Accordingly the optimum condition was set as: 2.0mg HKUST-1-MOF-NA-MIP, 200μL eluent and 5.0min sonication time in center points other variables were determined as the best conditions to reach the maximum recovery of the analyte. The UA-DSPME-UV-vis method performances like excellent linearity (LR), limits of detection (LOD), limits of quantification of 10-5000μgL^-1 with R² of 0.99, LOD (1.96ngmL^-1), LOQ (6.53μgL^-1), respectively show successful and accurate applicability of the present method for monitoring analytes with within- and between-day precision of 0.96-3.38%. The average absolute recoveries of the nicotinamide extracted from the urine, milk and water samples were 95.85-101.27%.

Thiacalix[4]arene-functionalized vesicles as phosphorescent indicators for pyridoxine detection in aqueous solution

Luminescent DPPC vesicles, decorated by new amphiphilic tetracarboxylate derivatives ofp-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene with Tb(iii) were used for the selective detection of pyridoxine hydrochloride.
