A dual-sensing strategy for the early diagnosis of urinary tract infections via detecting biofilm cellulose using aromatic amino acid-capped Au and Ag nanoparticles

Currently, urinary tract infection (UTI) diagnosis focuses on planktonic cell detection rather than biofilm detection, but the facile identification of UPEC bacterial biofilms is crucial in UTI diagnosis as the biofilm formed by bacteria is the causative agent of recurrent and chronic UTIs. Therefore, in this work, we developed a simple, cost-effective, colorimetric, and electrochemical-based strategy for the detection of cellulose in urine. Cellulose, a biofilm matrix component, was detected using tyrosine-capped gold and silver nanoparticles through a visible colorimetric change with a decrease in the absorbance intensity and a decrease in current response in the case of cyclic voltammetry. The sensor displayed a linear detection range of 10-70 mg mL-1 for colorimetry and 10-300 μg mL-1 for cyclic voltammetry with a good selectivity of <2.8% and a recovery rate of 95-100% in real-time sample analysis. Moreover, the binding affinity of cellulose with tyrosine was investigated using molecular docking studies to validate the sensing mechanism. We anticipate that our work will aid clinicians in the implementation of rapid, cost-effective, and definitive diagnosis of UTIs.

On-Chip Micro-Supercapacitor with High Areal Energy Density Based on Dielectrophoretic Assembly of Nanoporous Metal Microwire Electrodes

Advances in the Internet of Things (IoT) technology have driven the demand for miniaturized electronic devices, prompting research on small-scale energy-storage systems. Micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) stand out in this regard because of their compact size, high power density, high charge-discharge rate, and extended cycle life. However, their limited energy density impedes commercialization. To resolve this issue, a simple and innovative approach is reported herein for fabricating highly efficient on-chip MSCs integrated with nanoporous metal microwires formed by dielectrophoresis (DEP)-driven gold nanoparticle (AuNP) assembly. Placing a water-based AuNP suspension onto interdigitated electrodes and applying an alternating voltage induces in-plane porous microwire formation in the electrode gap. The DEP-induced AuNP assembly and the gold microwire (AuMW) growth rate can be adjusted by controlling the applied alternating voltage and frequency. The microwire-integrated MSC (AuMW-MSC) electrically outperforms its unmodified counterpart and exhibits a 30% larger electrode area, along with 72% and 78% higher specific and areal capacitances, respectively, than a microwire-free MSC. Additionally, AuMW-MSC achieves maximum energy and power densities of 3.33 µWh cm-2 and 2629 µW cm-2, respectively, with a gel electrolyte. These findings can help upgrade MSCs to function as potent energy-storage devices for small electronics.

Surface Plasmon Resonance-Enhanced CdS/FTO Heterojunction for Cu2+ Detection

Copper ion (Cu2+) pollution poses a serious threat to marine ecology and fisheries. However, the complexity of seawater and its interference factors make the online detection of Cu2+ quite challenging. To address this issue, we introduce the concept of the photo-assisted adjustment barrier effect into electrochemical detection, using it as a driving force to generate electrochemical responses. The Schottky barrier demonstrates a remarkable regulatory influence on the electrochemical response under photoexcitation, facilitating the response through Cu2+ adsorption. We developed a 4-MBA-AuNPs/CdS/FTO composite that serves as a sensitive platform for Cu2+ detection, achieving a detection limit of 70 nM. Notably, the photo-assisted adjustment of the barrier effect effectively counters the interference posed by ions in seawater, ensuring accurate detection. Furthermore, the sensor exhibits a promising recovery rate (99.62-104.9%) in real seawater samples, highlighting its practical applications. This innovative approach utilizing the photo-assisted adjustment barrier effect offers a promising path for developing electrochemical sensors that can withstand interference.

Size-Dependent Graphene Support for Decorating Gold Nanoparticles as a Catalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction with Machine Learning-Assisted Prediction

Size-dependent two-dimensional (2D) materials (e.g., graphene) have been recently used to improve their performance in various applications such as membrane filtration, energy storage, and electrocatalysts. It has also been demonstrated that 2D nanosheets can be one of the promising support materials for decorating nanoparticles (NPs). However, the optimum nanosheet size (lateral length and thickness) for supporting NPs has not yet been explored to enhance their catalytic performance. Herein, we elucidate the mechanism behind size-dependent graphene (GP) as a support due to which gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are used as an active catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Surprisingly, the decoration of AuNPs increased with the increasing nanosheet size, counter to what is widely reported in the literature (high surface area for smaller nanosheet size). We found that a large graphene nanosheet (lGP; ∼800 nm) used as the AuNP support (lGP/AuNPs) exhibited superior performance for the HER with long-term stability. The lGP/AuNPs with a suitable content of AuNPs provides a low overpotential and a small Tafel slope, being lower than that of other reported carbon-based HER electrocatalysts. This results from highly exposed active sites of well-dispersed AuNPs on lGP giving high conductivity. The laminar structure of the stacked graphene nanosheets and the high wettability of the lGP/AuNPs electrode surface also play crucial roles in enhancing electrolytes for penetration in the electrode, suggesting a highly electrochemical surface area. Moreover, machine learning (Random Forest) was also used to reveal the essential features of the advanced catalytic material design for catalyst-based applications.

Using Sparfloxacin-Capped Gold Nanoparticles to Modify a Screen-Printed Carbon Electrode Sensor for Ethanol Determination

Alcohol is a dangerous substance causing global mortality and health issues, including mental health problems. Regular alcohol consumption can lead to depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, and increased risk of alcohol-related disorders. Thus, monitoring ethanol levels in biological samples could contribute to maintaining good health. Herein, we developed an electrochemical sensor for the determination of ethanol in human salivary samples. Initially, the tetra-chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) was chemically reduced using sparfloxacin (Sp) which also served as a stabilizing agent for the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). As-prepared Sp-AuNPs were comprehensively characterized and confirmed by UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and elemental mapping analysis. The average particle size (~25 nm) and surface charge (negative) of Sp-AuNPs were determined by using dynamic light scattering (DLS) and Zeta potential measurements. An activated screen-printed carbon electrode (A-SPE) was modified using Sp-AuNPs dispersion, which exhibited greater electrocatalytic activity and sensitivity for ethanol (EtOH) oxidation in 0.1 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). DPV showed a linear response for EtOH from 25 µM to 350 µM with the lowest limit of detection (LOD) of 0.55 µM. Reproducibility and repeatability studies revealed that the Sp-AuNPs/A-SPEs were highly stable and very sensitive to EtOH detection. Additionally, the successful electrochemical determination of EtOH in a saliva sample was carried out. The recovery rate of EtOH spiked in the saliva sample was found to be 99.6%. Thus, the incorporation of Sp-AuNPs within sensors could provide new possibilities in the development of ethanol sensors with an improved level of precision and accuracy.

Sunlight-Powered Reverse Water Gas Shift Reaction Catalysed by Plasmonic Au/TiO2 Nanocatalysts: Effects of Au Particle Size on the Activity and Selectivity

This study reports the low temperature and low pressure conversion (up to 160 °C, p = 3.5 bar) of CO₂ and H₂ to CO using plasmonic Au/TiO₂ nanocatalysts and mildly concentrated artificial sunlight as the sole energy source (up to 13.9 kW·m^-2 = 13.9 suns). To distinguish between photothermal and non-thermal contributors, we investigated the impact of the Au nanoparticle size and light intensity on the activity and selectivity of the catalyst. A comparative study between P25 TiO₂-supported Au nanocatalysts of a size of 6 nm and 16 nm displayed a 15 times higher activity for the smaller particles, which can only partially be attributed to the higher Au surface area. Other factors that may play a role are e.g., the electronic contact between Au and TiO₂ and the ratio between plasmonic absorption and scattering. Both catalysts displayed ≥84% selectivity for CO (side product is CH₄). Furthermore, we demonstrated that the catalytic activity of Au/TiO₂ increases exponentially with increasing light intensity, which indicated the presence of a photothermal contributor. In dark, however, both Au/TiO₂ catalysts solely produced CH₄ at the same catalyst bed temperature (160 °C). We propose that the difference in selectivity is caused by the promotion of CO desorption through charge transfer of plasmon generated charges (as a non-thermal contributor).

Highly Sensitive Electrochemical Immunosensor Platforms for Dual Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Antigen and Antibody based on Gold Nanoparticle Functionalized Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites

In this work, we report a facile synthesis of graphene oxide-gold (GO-Au) nanocomposites by electrodeposition. The fabricated electrochemical immunosensors are utilized for the dual detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antigen and SARS-CoV-2 antibody. The GO-Au nanocomposites has been characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for its biosensing properties. The linear detection range of the SARS-CoV-2 antigen immunosensor is 10.0 ag mL-1 to 50.0 ng mL-1, whereas that for the antibody immunosensor ranges from 1.0 fg mL-1 to 1.0 ng mL-1. The calculated limit of detection (LOD) of the SARS-CoV-2 antigen immunosensor is 3.99 ag mL-1, and that for SARS-CoV-2 antibody immunosensor is 1.0 fg mL-1 with high sensitivity. The validation of the immunosensor has also been carried out on patient serum and patient swab samples from COVID-19 patients. The results suggest successful utilization of the immunosensors with a very low detection limit enabling its use in clinical samples. Further work is needed for the standardization of the results and translation in screen-printed electrodes for use in portable commercial applications.

New in situ description of electrodepositing multiple nucleation processes under galvanostatic stimuli

Chronoamperometry was used to investigate phase transformations at the early stage of electrodeposition under potentiostatic stimuli. Whilst electrodeposition mostly occurs under galvanostatic stimuli, this work provides a new in situ description using chronopotentiometry to analyse phase transformations during electrodeposition. With theoretical Ohm's law electro-relationship formula derivation, a non-dimensional plot between (ΔE_min/ΔE_T)² and t/t_m was established similar to (I_t/I_max)²vs. t/t_m in the SH model. The non-dimensional plots were verified by the chronopotentiometry curve during gold electrodeposition. This work provides a new method of investigating phase transformation using chronopotentiometry during electrodeposition.

TiO2 Doped with Noble Metals as an Efficient Solution for the Photodegradation of Hazardous Organic Water Pollutants at Ambient Conditions

This work highlights new insights into the performance of TiO2 doped with noble metal catalysts for the photocatalytic degradation of organic water pollutants. Different samples of titanium dioxide doped with noble metals (Au and Pd) were successfully synthesized via incipient wet impregnation (IWI) and ultrasound-assisted impregnation (US) methods. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and UV-Vis reflectance spectroscopy were used for the characterization of the obtained materials. Their photocatalytic efficiency was investigated in aqueous suspension thorough a series of laboratory tests performed under ultraviolet (UV-A) irradiation conditions using 2,4 dinitrophenol (2,4 DNP) as a target molecule. The results clearly show that the method used for the catalyst synthesis affects its photocatalytic activity. It was found that the samples prepared by the IWI method exhibited high photocatalytic activity, and the removal rate obtained with TiO2-Pd/IWI was higher than that found for TiO2-Au/IWI. Furthermore, for the best catalyst, some extra photocatalytic experiments were conducted with rhodamine 6G (R6G), a highly stable molecule with a very different chemical structure to 2,4 DNP, in order to check the reactivity of this material. Moreover, the recycling experiments carried out with TiO2-Pd/IWI clearly demonstrated the high photocatalytic stability of this material for the degradation of 2,4 DNP. All of the collected data confirmed the interesting photocatalytic potential of the selected catalyst in the elimination of organic pollutants with no obvious change in its reactivity after four reaction cycles, which is very promising for promoting future applications in water depollution.

Rational Compositional Control of Electrodeposited Ag-Fe films

Some alloys are very difficult to electrodeposit, due to problems such as the large difference in the equilibrium potentials and/or deposition kinetics of the alloy components, as well as the bath instability due to the spontaneous reactions in the bulk electrolyte. The Ag-Fe system is one of those. In this work, a novel alkaline citrate-dimethylhydantoin (DMH) complex has been used to synthesize thermodynamically immiscible Ag-Fe alloy films. The large difference in standard potentials and deposition kinetics of Ag and Fe is partially resolved by complexing Ag(I) with DMH, while the instability caused from spontaneous reduction of Ag(I) by Fe(II) was partially resolved by adding 1% Fe³⁺, based on the philosophy of the mixed potential theory. Furthermore, a paradigm for control of film composition is developed, based on the mass-transfer coefficient ratio, tested with various bath constitutions. Uniform and high-quality films are obtained, with a composition error of <4 at. % comparing with the predicted values. Electrochemical reactions involved in the deposition baths were systematically investigated using cyclic voltammetry, showing satisfactory agreement with the predicted deposition potentials calculated by equilibrium thermodynamics. The films deposited at high overpotential are proven to be biphasic, containing Ag-fcc and Fe-bcc phases, with a trend of decreasing crystallinity at increasing overpotentials when deposited at constant deposition time. A narrow transition potential range (<0.05 V) from the onset of Fe deposition to its limiting current condition was observed.

Photocatalytically Active Graphitic Carbon Nitride as an Effective and Safe 2D Material for In Vitro and In Vivo Photodynamic Therapy

Thanks to its photocatalytic property, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃ N₄ ) is a promising candidate in various applications including nanomedicine. However, studies focusing on the suitability of g-C₃ N₄ for cancer therapy are very limited and possible underlying molecular mechanisms are unknown. Here, it is demonstrated that photoexcitation of g-C₃ N₄ can be used effectively in photodynamic therapy, without using any other carrier or additional photosensitizer. Upon light exposure, g-C₃ N₄ treatment kills cancer cells, without the need of any other nanosystem or chemotherapeutic drug. The material is efficiently taken up by tumor cells in vitro. The transcriptome and proteome of g-C₃ N₄ and light treated cells show activation in pathways related to both oxidative stress, cell death, and apoptosis which strongly suggests that only when combined with light exposure, g-C₃ N₄ is able to kill cancer cells. Systemic administration of the mesoporous form results in elimination from urinary bladder without any systemic toxicity. Administration of the material significantly decreases tumor volume when combined with local light treatment. This study paves the way for the future use of not only g-C₃ N₄ but also other 2D nanomaterials in cancer therapy.

Experimental and DFT study of the effect of mercaptosuccinic acid on cyanide-free immersion gold deposition

In order to search for an effective alternative to cyanide for gold plating, mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) was selected as the complexing agent of Au⁺ by open circuit potential tests and gold plating compared with 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid and aminomethylphosphonic acid. For the first time, a novel, stable, slightly acidic and cyanide-free gold plating bath was prepared. Scanning electron microscopy, Tafel tests, and tin dipping tests showed that the Cu/Ni–P/Au coating had a fine and even grain size, no black pad, good corrosion resistance, and good weldability. Quantum chemical calculations based on density functional theory were used to further study complexants and complexes. Molecular electrostatic potential indicates that Au⁺ approaches MSA in the direction of C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> O. Frontier molecular orbital theory, atomic contribution to orbital composition, condensed local softness, and average local ionization energy indicate that the coordination capacity of the S atom in MSA is much stronger than that of other atoms. Fuzzy bond order analysis shows that the S–Au–S coordination structure is the most stable form in the plating solution. UV-visible absorption spectroscopy clarifies that the wavelength is redshifted when MSA–Au(i) ions form.

A protamine-conjugated gold decorated graphene oxide composite as an electrochemical platform for heparin detection

In this study, an effective electrochemical sensor was developed for heparin detection using a protamine-conjugated graphene oxide/gold (GO/Au) composite. Protamine is an antidote that can act as an affinity ligand for heparin. The GO was used as support for signal amplification, and Au nanoparticles (NPs) were employed to immobilize the protamine. This Au NPs also increasing the electron transfer rate and enhancing the signal response during protamine-heparin integration. The proposed affinity sensor had a simple fabrication process, a low detection limit (0.9 nM), a wide linear range (1.9 × 10^-7 M to 1.5 × 10^-9 M), high stability, and high selectivity in the detection of heparin.

Recyclable and Flexible Starch-Ag Networks and Its Application in Joint Sensor

Flexible transparent conductive electrodes are essential component for flexible optoelectronic devices and have been extensively studied in recent years, while most of the researches are focusing on the electrode itself, few topics in material green and recyclability. In this paper, we demonstrate a high-performance transparent conductive electrode (TCE), based on our previous cracking technology, combined with a green and recyclable substrate, a starch film. It not only shows low R_s (less than 1.0 Ω sq^-1), high transparency (> 82%, figure of merit ≈ 10,000), but also provides an ultra-smooth morphology and recyclability. Furthermore, a series of biosensors on human joints are demonstrated, showing great sensitivity and mechanical stability.

Theoretical and experimental studies of the influence of gold ions and DMH on cyanide-free gold electrodeposition

Quantum chemical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) were employed to determine an appropriate gold source for gold electroplating and to ascertain the stable structures of gold-complexes in cyanide-free electrolyte. Based on the charge distribution of 5,5-dimethylhydantoin (DMH) and the bonding energy of gold complexes, Au³⁺ is the appropriate gold source for DMH-based gold electroplating electrolyte to get greater cathodic polarization and [Au(DMH)₄]⁻ with 2N(4)–Au coordination structure is the most stable form of gold ion in the electrolyte. The influence of DMH, used as the complexing agent, on electrochemical behaviors was investigated using cathodic polarization, cyclic voltammetry, and chronoamperometry measurements. With DMH as the complexing agent, the cathodic polarization of gold electrodeposition was significantly enhanced. DMH concentration was determined as 0.30 mol L⁻¹ based on the investigation of the influence of the DMH concentration on cathodic polarization and gold electrodeposit micromorphology. The kinetic features based on cyclic voltammogram measurements revealed that the electrodeposition was an irreversible process under diffusion control with 0.30 mol L⁻¹ DMH as the complexing agent. The ion and electron transfers were obviously inhibited by DMH. The gold electrodeposition process displayed progressive nucleation according to the Scharifker and Hills nucleation model with various applied potentials. The growth rate of the crystal nucleus was reduced by DMH and promoted by a negative shift of E_ap.
