Dopamine-modified magnetic graphene oxide as a recoverable sorbent for the preconcentration of metal ions by an effervescence-assisted dispersive micro solid-phase extraction procedure

Nanomagnetic graphene oxide modified with dopamine (GO-Fe3O4-DA) was synthesized via a very simple procedure. Using GO-Fe3O4-DA as the new adsorbent, the effervescence-assisted dispersive micro solid-phase extraction procedure was exploited for the preconcentrative extraction of Cu(ii), Pb(ii) and Ni(ii) ions. Structural characteristics of the adsorbent were studied via FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDX and XRD analyses. The rapid dispersion and high adsorption capability of GO-Fe3O4-DA, along with the rapid separation of the adsorbent from the aqueous phase by a magnet, led to a decrease in the extraction time of the target metal ions. In effect, high extraction percentages were attained in a very short time period. In this work, the relative standard deviations (RSD; n = 3) calculated for the proposed method were 1.09, 1.25 and 1.03% for the Pb(ii), Cu(ii) and Ni(ii) ions, respectively, the calibration curve was dynamically linear in the range of 0.25 to 50 μg L-1, and the limits of detection were obtained as 0.5, 0.1, and 0.7 μg L-1. The procedure was also implemented on real sausage (herbal and meaty) samples and a water sample, vouchsafing the success of the proposed method in tackling real samples with a complicated matrix.

Evaluate the exposure of toxic metals via drinking water and smoking nonbranded cigarette in malnourished women by modified single/two-step cloud point extraction

Presently, the exposure of heavy metals (cadmium and lead) was determined in biological sample (serum) of women (pregnant and nonpregnant) who belong to low socioeconomic group (malnutrition). The cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) were determined in drinking water and locally produced cigarette (bidi), smoking by women of childbearing age. The preconcentration of heavy metals in serum, water, and tobacco of bidi were carried out by cloud point extraction at single and two-step methods before determination by atomic absorption spectrometry with flame mode. The Cd and Pb in the water- and acid-digested serum and tobacco samples were treated with a complexing reagent 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN). The hydrophobic complex of Cd and Pb was entrapped in Triton X-114. For the first step, the entrapped analytes in Triton X-114 was diluted with alcoholic acid (0.2 mol/L of HNO₃) and subjected to FAAS, whereas for the second step of CPE, the surfactant-rich analyte was subjected to the second round of enrichment method. Lastly, the analyte was back-extracted in acidic solution (0.2 mol/L) and analyzed by FAAS. The all significant variable was optimized for optimal recovery of Cd and Pb. The recommended single/two-step cloud point extraction method was validated by simultaneously evaluated matrices matched certified reference materials of water, serum, and tobacco. The resulted data indicated that the groundwater samples contained elevated concentrations of Cd and Pb than recommended values for drinking water by WHO, while the contents of Cd and Pb were observed about two-fold higher in nonbranded cigarette (bidi) than branded cigarette. It was observed that there were about 3 to 4 times higher concentrations of both toxic metals in blood serum of smoker malnourished women group than in referent nonsmoker women. Graphical abstract.

An environmental friendly enrichment method for microextraction of cadmium and lead in groundwater samples: Impact on biological sample of children

A novel ionic liquid-based vortex assisted dispersive liquid-liquid micro extraction procedure(IL-VADLLμE) was proposed for the enrichment of toxic metals, cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in different types of water samples, domestic treated and groundwater (tube well and hand pump). Whereas, the concentration of both toxic metals was also determined in the scalp hair of children (age ranged 1-3 years), drinking contaminated groundwater termed as exposed group, whereas for comparative purposes scalp hair of age matched children consumed domestically treated water, named as non-exposed group. To preconcentrate the trace levels of Cd and Pb, a green chelating agent, l-cysteine (2-amino-3-sulfhydrylpropanoic acid) was used for complexation, an ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [BMIM] [PF₆] utilized as extractant and hexafluorophosphate ion (PF₆^-) as anion pairing agent, which facilitate the enrichment of hydrophobic complexes of analytes into the acceptor phase. Various operative features for the IL-VADLLμE method like pH of standards/samples, volume of ionic liquid and sample solution, concentration of ligand, ion pair reagent and ionic liquid, vortex and electrical shaking time (for comparative purpose), were thoroughly optimized. The projected method was effectively applicable to assess the Cd and Pb in trace level in real water sample (surface and groundwater) and scalp hair samples of children belongs to exposed and non-exposed areas. The high contents of both toxic metals in scalp hair samples of children consuming groundwater indicate that the adverse impacts of both toxic metals especially Pb on the general health as well as neuron and skeletal problem, from child hood.

Zwitterion-functionalized polymer microspheres as a sorbent for solid phase extraction of trace levels of V(V), Cr(III), As(III), Sn(IV), Sb(III) and Hg(II) prior to their determination by ICP-MS

This paper describes the preparation of zwitterion-functionalized polymer microspheres (ZPMs) and their application to simultaneous enrichment of V(V), Cr(III), As(III), Sn(IV), Sb(III) and Hg(II) from environmental water samples. The ZPMs were prepared by emulsion copolymerization of ethyl methacrylate, 2-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate and triethylene glycol dimethyl acrylate followed by modification with 1,3-propanesultone. The components were analyzed by elemental analyses as well as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and the structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The ZPMs were packed into a mini-column for on-line solid-phase extraction (SPE) of the above metal ions. Following extraction with 40 mM NH₄NO₃ and 0.5 M HNO₃ solution, the ions were quantified by ICP-MS. Under the optimized conditions, the enrichment factors (from a 40 mL sample) are up to 60 for the ions V(V), As(III), Sb(III) and Hg(II), and 55 for Cr(III) and Sn(IV). The detection limits are 1.2, 3.4, 1.0, 3.7, 2.1 and 1.6 ng L^-1 for V(V), Cr(III), As(III), Sn(IV), Sb(III) and Hg(II), respectively, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) are below 5.2%. The feasibility and accuracy of the method were validated by successfully analyzing six certified reference materials as well as lake, well and river waters. Application of ultrasonically modified cloud point extraction method for simultaneous enrichment of cadmium and lead in sera of different types of gallstone patients

A novel and greener ultrasonically assisted/modified cloud point extraction procedure for the simultaneous preconcentration of lead and cadmium in serum samples of different types of gallstone patients was developed. The chelates of the under study metals, formerly formed with 8-hydroxyquinoline, were extracted in the micelles of a nonionic surfactant prior to analysis by flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS). After the arrival of the cloud point, the critical micellar mass produced was homogenously dispersed in the aqueous phase with the help of ultrasound energy. The reliability of the developed procedure was tested by relative standard deviation (% RSD), which was found to be <5%. The performance of the proposed procedure was checked by applying to certified reference material and spiking standard in real samples. All the experimental parameters were optimized. The developed procedure of Um-CPE was applied successfully for the analysis of the target heavy metals in serum samples of different types of gallstone patients and referents. The higher levels of the understudy metals were observed in the patients as compared to the referents but the levels of the both metal were found to be considerably higher in patients with pigmented gallstones.

Ultrasound-promoted dispersive micro solid-phase extraction of trace anti-hypertensive drugs from biological matrices using a sonochemically synthesized conductive polymer nanocomposite

In this work, a rapid and efficient procedure named ultrasound meliorated dispersive micro solid-phase extraction followed by high performance liquid chromatography-ultra violet detection (US-D-μSPE-HPLC-UV) was developed for the pre-concentration of the main trace anti-hypertensive drugs in complex matrices. The basis of this procedure was a polypyrrole-sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate/zinc oxide (PPy-DBSNa/ZnO) nanocomposite. It was readily synthesized by the impressive way of in situ sonochemical oxidative polymerization in the presence of some additives such as FeCl₃ and DBSNa, ultimately leading to the effective coating of PPy on the ZnO nanoparticle cores. Characterization of the proposed nanosorbent was performed by different techniques such as FESEM, XRD,EDX, and TGA, confirming the high quality and proper physico-chemical properties of the proposed sorbent. In order to better investigate the input variables, the central composite design (CCD) combined with the desirability function (DF) was utilized. The enriched optimum conditions consisted of the initial pH value of 11.8, 15mg of the PPy-DBSNa/ZnO nanocomposite, a sonication time of 4.6min, and 100μL of methanol, resulting in maximum responses at a relatively low extraction time with a logical DF. Under the optimum conditions, good linearity (5-5000, 2.5-3500, and 2.5-3000ngmL^-1 for metoprolol, propranolol, and carvedilol, respectively, with the correlation of determinations (R²s) higher than 0.99), low limits of detection (LODs) (0.8-1.5ngmL^-1), proper repeatabilities (relative standard deviation values (RSDs) below 6.3%, n=3), reasonable enrichment factors (EFs) (60-72), and good extraction recoveries (ERs) (higher than %75) were obtainable. These appropriate validations corroborated a good effectiveness of ultrasonic waves in the achievement of a supreme solid phase as well as a facile and efficient microextraction of the low therapeutic concentrations in human plasma and urine samples.

Study on the performance of micro-flow injection preconcentration method on-line coupled to thermospray flame furnace AAS using MWCNTs wrapped with polyvinylpyridine nanocomposites as adsorbent

An adsorbent nanocomposite based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes and polyvinylpyridine is used in the development of a micro-flow injection preconcentration method coupled to TS-FF-AAS for the determination of very low levels of Cd.
