Selective Voltammetric Sensor for the Simultaneous Quantification of Tartrazine and Brilliant Blue FCF

Tartrazine and brilliant blue FCF are synthetic dyes used in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. The individual and/or simultaneous control of their concentrations is required due to dose-dependent negative health effects. Therefore, the paper presents experimental results related to the development of a sensing platform for the electrochemical detection of tartrazine and brilliant blue FCF based on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with MnO₂ nanorods, using anodic differential pulse voltammetry. Homogeneous and stable suspensions of MnO₂ nanorods have been obtained involving cetylpyridinium bromide solution as a cationic surfactant. The MnO₂ nanorods-modified electrode showed a 7.9-fold increase in the electroactive surface area and a 72-fold decrease in the electron transfer resistance. The developed sensor allowed the simultaneous quantification of dyes for two linear domains: in the ranges of 0.10-2.5 and 2.5-15 μM for tartrazine and 0.25-2.5 and 2.5-15 μM for brilliant blue FCF with detection limits of 43 and 41 nM, respectively. High selectivity of the sensor response in the presence of typical interference agents (inorganic ions, saccharides, ascorbic and sorbic acids), other food dyes (riboflavin, indigo carmine, and sunset yellow), and vanillin has been achieved. The sensor has been tested by analyzing soft and isotonic sports drinks and the determined concentrations were close to those obtained involving the chromatography technique.

Sensing Methods for Hazardous Phenolic Compounds Based on Graphene and Conducting Polymers-Based Materials

It has been known for years that the phenolic compounds are able to exert harmful effects toward living organisms including humans due to their high toxicity. Living organisms were exposed to these phenolic compounds as they were released into the environment as waste products from several fast-growing industries. In this regard, tremendous efforts have been made by researchers to develop sensing methods for the detection of these phenolic compounds. Graphene and conducting polymers-based materials have arisen as a high potential sensing layer to improve the performance of the developed sensors. Henceforth, this paper reviews the existing investigations on graphene and conducting polymer-based materials incorporated with various sensors that aimed to detect hazardous phenolic compounds, i.e., phenol, 2-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, pentachlorophenol, 2-nitrophenol, 4-nitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, and 2,4-dimethylphenol. The whole picture and up-to-date information on the graphene and conducting polymers-based sensors are arranged in systematic chronological order to provide a clearer insight in this research area. The future perspectives of this study are also included, and the development of sensing methods for hazardous phenolic compounds using graphene and conducting polymers-based materials is expected to grow more in the future.

Recent developments in MnO2-based photocatalysts for organic dye removal: a review

The textile industry consumes a large volume of organic dyes and water. These organic dyes, which remained in the effluents, are usually persistent and difficult to degrade by conventional wastewater treatment techniques. If the wastewater is not treated properly and is discharged into water system, it will cause environmental pollution and risk to living organisms. To mitigate these impacts, the photo-driven catalysis process using semiconductor materials emerges as a promising approach. The semiconductor photocatalysts are able to remove the organic effluent through their mineralization and decolorization abilities. Besides the commonly used titanium dioxide (TiO₂), manganese dioxide (MnO₂) is a potential photocatalyst for wastewater treatment. MnO₂ has a narrow bandgap energy of 1~2 eV. Thus, it possesses high possibility to be driven by visible light and infrared light for dye degradation. This paper reviews the MnO₂-based photocatalysts in various aspects, including its fundamental and photocatalytic mechanisms, recent progress in the synthesis of MnO₂ nanostructures in particle forms and on supporting systems, and regeneration of photocatalysts for repeated use. In addition, the effect of various factors that could affect the photocatalytic performance of MnO₂ nanostructures are discussed, followed by the future prospects of the development of this semiconductor photocatalysts towards commercialization.

Progress in cancer biomarkers monitoring strategies using graphene modified support materials

Cancer is the one of the fatal and dreaded disease responsible for huge number of morbidity and mortality across the globe. It is expected that the global burden will increase to 21.7 million fresh cancer cases as compared to present estimate of 18.1 million cancer cases in addition to nearly 9.6 million cancer deaths worldwide. In response to cancerous or certain benign conditions; specific type of tumor or cancer markers (biomarkers) are produced at much higher levels which are secreted into the urine, blood, stool, tumor or other tissues. Therefore, the efficient and early detection of cancer biomarkers is necessary which can offer a reliable way for cancer patient screening and diagnosis. This process not only helps in the evaluation of pathogenic processes but also the prognosis of different cancers and pharmacological responses to therapeutic interventions are secured. Over the past several years, electrochemical detection methods have proved to be the most attractive methods among many, due to the advantages, such as simple instrumentation, portability, low cost and high sensitivity. Furthermore, the modifications of these electrochemical immunosensors by utilizing various types of nanomaterials enable these systems to detect trace amount of target tumor markers. Hence, herein, we intend to review the selective works on electrochemical detection of various biomarkers using wide range of nanomaterials with a particular focus on graphene.

Facile synthesis of MnO2-embedded flower-like hierarchical porous carbon microspheres as an enhanced electrocatalyst for sensitive detection of caffeic acid

Tailored designs/fabrications of hierarchical porous advanced electrode materials are of great importance for developing high-performance electrochemical sensors. Herein, we demonstrate a simple and low-cost in situ chemical approach for the facile synthesis of MnO₂-embedded hierarchical porous carbon microspheres (MnO₂/CM). By the characterizations of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction and energy dispersive spectroscopy, we evidenced that the synthesized product were flower-like carbon microspheres (CM) assembled by the bent flakes with thickness of about several nanometers and MnO₂ nanorods were highly dispersed and successfully decorated on the CM layers, resulting in a rough surface and three-dimensional microstructure. The greatest benefit from the combined porous CM with MnO₂ nanorods is that the MnO₂/CM modified electrode has the synergetic catalysis effect on the electro-oxidation of caffeic acid, leading to the remarkable increase in the electron transfer rate and significant decrease in the over-potential for the caffeic acid oxidation in contrast to the bare electrode and CM modified electrode. This implies that the prepared MnO₂/CM can be employed as an enhanced electrocatalyst for the sensitive detection of caffeic acid. Under the optimum conditions, the anodic peak current of caffeic acid is linear with its concentration in the range of 0.01-15.00 μmol L^-1, and a detection limit of 2.7 nmol L^-1 is achieved based on S/N = 3. The developed sensor shows good selectivity, sensitivity, reproducibility, and also excellent recovery in the detections of real samples, revealing the promising practicality of the sensor for the caffeic acid detection.
