Improvement in the Chromium(VI)-Diphenylcarbazide Determination Using Cloud Point Microextraction; Speciation of Chromium at Low Levels in Water Samples

A reliable, rapid, and low-cost procedure for determining very low concentrations of hexavalent chromium (Cr) in water is discussed. The procedure is based in the classical reaction of Cr6+ with diphenylcarbazide. Once this reaction has taken place, sodium dodecylsulfate is added to obtain an ion-pair, and Triton X-114 is incorporated. Next, the heating of the mixture allows two phases that can be separated by centrifugation to be obtained in a cloud point microextraction (CPE) process. The coacervate contains all the Cr6+ originally present in the water sample, so that the measurement by molecular absorption spectrophotometry allows the concentration of the metal to be calculated. No harmful organic solvents are required. The discrimination of hexavalent and trivalent forms is achieved by including an oxidation stage with Ce4+. To take full advantage of the pre-concentration effect inherent to the coacervation process, as well as to minimize reagent consumption and waste generation, a portable mini-spectrophotometer which is compatible with microvolumes of liquid samples is used. The preconcentration factor is 415 and a chromium concentration as low as 0.02 µg L-1 can be detected. The procedure shows a good reproducibility (relative standard deviation close to 3%).

Nude and Modified Electrospun Nanofibers, Application to Air Purification

Air transports several pollutants, including particulate matter (PM), which can produce cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Thus, it is a challenge to control pollutant emissions before releasing them to the environment. Until now, filtration has been the most efficient processes for removing PM. Therefore, the electrospinning procedure has been applied to obtain membranes with a high filtration efficiency and low pressure drop. This review addressed the synthesis of polymers that are used for fabricating high-performance membranes by electrospinning to remove air pollutants. Then, the most influential parameters to produce electrospun membranes are indicated. The main results show that electrospun membranes are an excellent alternative to having air filters due to the versatility of the process, the capacity for controlling the fiber diameter, porosity, high filtration efficiency and low-pressure drop.

Effect of synthetic fatty liquor and neatsfoot oil as co-contaminants on the reduction of hexavalent chromium using Fusarium oxysporum and its kinetic study

The hexavalent chromium is one of the major carcinogenic components released during the tanning process and lots of work have been carried out on the reduction of hexavalent chromium via chemical and biological routes. Different fatty oils are also employed in the tanning process and have also been released as an effluent along with chromium. However, it is difficult to find a study on the reduction of chromium in the presence of other contaminant which would help to mimic the real-time complication of treating the tannery effluent. It is the first attempt on the reduction of hexavalent chromium in the presence of synthetic fatty liquor and neatsfoot oil using Fusarium oxysporum. The maximum percentage of chromium reduction was 73.62% and 60.28% in neatsfoot oil and synthetic fatty oil, respectively, for the initial chromium concentration of 25 mg/L. The biomass productivity was better with both neatsfoot oil and synthetic fatty oil, whereas the same has decreased with the presence of chromium. The reduction of chromium was found to follow the uncompetitive substrate inhibition kinetics than the general Michaelis-Menten kinetics. The kinetic parameters were calculated using particle swarm optimization algorithm, which were compared with the already reported data. The uncompetitive substrate inhibition kinetics was represented the experimental data in both the cases and the value of substrate inhibition constant was low in the case of neatsfoot oil compared with the synthetic fatty liquor.

Composition Effects on the Morphology of PVA/Chitosan Electrospun Nanofibers

Since the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the interest in applying nanofibers t air filtration and personal protective equipment has grown significantly. Due to their morphological and structural properties, nanofibers have potential applications for air filtration in masks and air filters. However, most nanofiber membrane materials used for these purposes are generally non-degradable materials, which can contribute to the disposal of plastic waste into the environment. Hence, this work aims to produce polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS) biodegradable nanofibers with controlled morphology and structure via electrospinning. An experimental design was used to investigate the effects of the PVA|CS ratio and concentration on the properties of the electrospinning compositions and electrospun nanofiber mat. The electrospinning parameters were constant for all experiments: Voltage of 20 kV, a feed rate of 0.5 mL·h−1, and a distance of 10 cm between the needle and a drum collector. CS proved to be an efficient adjuvant to the PVA’s electrospinning, obtaining a wide range of nanofiber diameters. Furthermore, 6.0% PVA and 1% CS were the best compositions after optimization with the response surface methodology, with a mean fiber diameter of 204 nm. The addition of biocide agents using the optimized condition was also investigated, using surfactants, citric acid, and pure and encapsulated essential oils of Lippia sidoides. Pure oil improved the material without enlarging the nanofiber sizes compared to the other additives. The nanofiber membranes produced have the potential to be used in air filtration or wound-dressing applications where biocidal activity is needed.

Superhydrophobic Nanosilica Decorated Electrospun Polyethylene Terephthalate Nanofibers for Headspace Solid Phase Microextraction of 16 Organochlorine Pesticides in Environmental Water Samples

A new solid phase micro extraction (SPME) fiber coating composed of electrospun polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanofibrous mat doped with superhydrophobic nanosilica (SiO2) was coated on a stainless-steel wire without the need of a binder. The coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) techniques and it was used in headspace-SPME of 16 organochlorine pesticides in water samples prior to gass chromatography micro electron capture detector (GC-µECD) analysis. The effects of main factors such as adsorption composition, electrospinning flow rate, salt concentration, extraction temperature, extraction time, and desorption conditions were investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the linear dynamic range (8−1000 ng L−1, R2 > 0.9907), limits of detection (3−80 ng L−1), limits of quantification (8−200 ng L−1), intra-day and inter-day precisions (at 400 and 1000 ng L−1, 1.7−13.8%), and fiber-to-fiber reproducibility (2.4−13.4%) were evaluated. The analysis of spiked tap, sewage, industrial, and mineral water samples for the determination of the analytes resulted in satisfactory relative recoveries (78−120%).

The Fabrication of Poly(Σ-caprolactone)-Poly(ethylene oxide) Sandwich Type Nanofibers Containing Sericin-Capped Silver Nanoparticles as an Antibacterial Wound Dressing

In this study, antibacterial, synthetic poly(Σ-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PCL-PEO) multilayer nanofibers were produced by an electrospinning method. The material was synthesized in 3 layers. The upper-lower protective layers were produced by PCL nanofibers and the intermediate layer was produced from PEO nanofiber containing sericin-capped silver nanoparticles (S-AgNPs). The electrospinning conditions in which nano-sized, smooth, bead-free fibers were obtained was determined to be an applied voltage of 20 kV, a flow rate of 8 μL/min and a distance between the collector and the needle tip of 22 cm for the PCL layer (dissolved at a 12% g/mL concentration in a chloroform:methanol (3:2) solvent mixture) layer. For the S-AgNPs doped PEO layer (dissolved at a 3.5% g/mL concentration in water), the corresponding conditions were determined to be 20 kV, 15 μL/min and 20 cm. To characterize the three-layer material that consisted of PCL and S-AgNPs doped PEO layers, FTIR and SEM analyses were performed, and the water retention capacity, in situ degradability and antibacterial activity of the material was investigated. According to SEM analysis, the fibers obtained were found to be nano-sized, smooth and bead-free and the average size of the nanofibers forming the PCL layer was 687 nm while the average size of the fibers forming the PEO layer was 98 nm. Antibacterial activity tests were performed using gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922) bacteria and the resulting biomaterial was found to have antimicrobial effect on both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. It was determined that the 3-layer material obtained in this study can be used as a wound dressing.

Synthesis of Highly Conductive Electrospun Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate Nanofibers Using the Electroless Deposition Method

Plastic bottles are generally recycled by remolding them into numerous products. In this study, waste from plastic bottles was used to fabricate recycled polyethylene terephthalate (r-PET) nanofibers via the electrospinning technique, and high-performance conductive polyethylene terephthalate nanofibers (r-PET nanofibers) were prepared followed by copper deposition using the electroless deposition (ELD) method. Firstly, the electrospun r-PET nanofibers were chemically modified with silane molecules and polymerized with 2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl trimethylammonium chloride (METAC) solution. Finally, the copper deposition was achieved on the surface of chemically modified r-PET nanofibers by simple chemical/ion attraction. The water contact angle of r-PET nanofibers, chemically modified r-PET nanofibers, and copper deposited nanofibers were 140°, 80°, and 138°, respectively. The r-PET nanofibers retained their fibrous morphology after copper deposition, and EDX results confirmed the presence of copper on the surface of r-PET nanofibers. XPS was performed to analyze chemical changes before and after copper deposition on r-PET nanofibers. The successful deposition of copper one r-PET nanofibers showed an excellent electrical resistance of 0.1 ohms/cm and good mechanical strength according to ASTM D-638.

Electrospun Polyethylene Terephthalate Nanofibers Loaded with Silver Nanoparticles: Novel Approach in Anti-Infective Therapy

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a major pollutant polymer, due to its wide use in food packaging and fiber production industries worldwide. Currently, there is great interest for recycling the huge amount of PET-based materials, derived especially from the food and textile industries. In this study, we applied the electrospinning technique to obtain nanostructured fibrillary membranes based on PET materials. Subsequently, the recycled PET networks were decorated with silver nanoparticles through the chemical reduction method for antimicrobial applications. After the characterization of the materials in terms of crystallinity, chemical bonding, and morphology, the effect against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungal strains, was investigated. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility tests were performed in order to open up potential biomedical applications, such as wound dressings or implant coatings. Silver-decorated fibers showed lower cytotoxicity and inflammatory effects and increased antibiofilm activity, thus highlighting the potential of these systems for antimicrobial purposes.

A Rapid Enrichment Technique for the Ultratrace Determination of Nickel in Water Samples Using a Nanofiber-composite Membrane Filter

A new method for the rapid enrichment and highly sensitive determination of nickel ion has been developed by using a nanofiber-composite membrane filter, which was fabricated by stacking a nanofibrous material made of nylon 6 over a water-permeable membrane filter. The noncharged nickel-α-furil dioxime complex was adsorbed on a nanofibrous layer of the membrane filter under significantly higher flow rates than those used for conventional solid-phase extraction techniques. Highly sensitive determinations with detection limits at sub-parts per billion levels were achieved by enrichment from 50 mL of the complex solution, and the enrichment was completed within 3 min. The color that was developed on the membrane filter was successfully subjected to visual colorimetric analysis and quantitative determination by solid-phase spectrophotometry. In addition, colorimetric determination was feasible with a handheld spectrometer after elution of the colored agent with 50 μL of acetone. This combination of rapid enrichment and spectrometric measurement in a small-volume sample provides a useful analytical method suitable for on-site analysis, which requires neither expensive instruments nor high laboratory skills.

Efficient removal of arsenic(III) from aqueous media using magnetic polyaniline-doped strontium-titanium nanocomposite

In this study, a novel nanocomposite adsorbent based on magnetic polyaniline and strontium-titanium (MP-SrTiO₃) nanoparticles was synthesized via a simple and low-cost polymerization method for efficiently removing of arsenic(III) ions from aqueous samples. The chemical structure, surface properties, and morphology of the prepared adsorbent were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The main effective parameters on the removal efficiency, such as pH, adsorbent dosage, salt, and contact time, were studied and optimized. The validity of the proposed method was checked by adsorption isotherm and kinetics models. Consequently, the adsorption kinetics corresponded to the first order (R² > 0.99), and the experimental equilibrium fitted the Langmuir model with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 67.11 mg/g (R² > 0.99) for arsenic(III) ions. Corresponding to thermodynamic Vant's Hof model (ΔG° (kJ/mol), ΔH° (kJ/mol), and ΔS° (kJ/mol K) - 8.19, - 60.61, and - 0.17, respectively), the mechanism and adsorption nature were investigated with that suggested exothermic and physisorption mechanism.

Review of geometries and coating materials in solid phase microextraction: Opportunities, limitations, and future perspectives

The development of new support and geometries of solid phase microextraction (SPME), including metal fiber assemblies, coated-tip, and thin film microextraction (TFME) (i.e. self-supported, fabric and blade supported), as well as their effects on diffusion and extraction rate of analytes were discussed in the current review. Application of main techniques widely used for preparation of a variety of coating materials of SPME, including sol-gel technique, electrochemical and electrospinning methods as well as the available commercial coatings, were presented. Advantages and limitations of each technique from several aspects, such as range of application, biocompatibility, availability in different geometrical configurations, method of preparation, incorporation of various materials to tune the coating properties, and thermal and physical stability, were also investigated. Future perspectives of each technique to improve the efficiency and stability of the coatings were also summarized. Some interesting materials including ionic liquids (ILs), metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and particle loaded coatings were briefly presented.
