Use of Electrospinning for Sustainable Production of Nanofibers: A Comparative Assessment of Smart Textiles-Related Applications

Textile production is a major component of the global industry, with sales of over USD 450 billion and estimations of an 84% increase in their demand in the next 20 years. In recent decades, protective and smart textiles have played important roles in the social economy and attracted widespread popularity thanks to their wide spectrum of applications with properties, such as antimicrobial, water-repellent, UV, chemical, and thermal protection. Towards the sustainable manufacturing of smart textiles, biodegradable, recycled, and bio-based plastics are used as alternative raw materials for fabric and yarn production using a wide variety of techniques. While conventional techniques present several drawbacks, nanofibers produced through electrospinning have superior structural properties. Electrospinning is an innovative method for fiber production based on the use of electrostatic force to create charged threads of polymer solutions. Electrospinning shows great potential since it provides control of the size, porosity, and mechanical resistance of the fibers. This review summarizes the advances in the rapidly evolving field of the production of nanofibers for application in smart and protective textiles using electrospinning and environmentally friendly polymers as raw materials, and provides research directions for optimized smart fibers in the future.

A Study on Tencel/LMPET-TPU/Triclosan Laminated Membranes: Excellent Water Resistance and Antimicrobial Ability

Medical product contamination has become a threatening issue against human health, which is the main reason why protective nonwoven fabrics have gained considerable attention. In the present, there is a soaring number of studies on establishing protection systems with nonwoven composites via needle punch. Meanwhile, the disadvantages of composites, such as poor mechanical performance and texture, impose restrictions. Hence, in this study, an eco-friendly method composed of needling, hot pressing, and lamination is applied to produce water-resistant, windproof, and antimicrobial Tencel/low-melting-point polyester-thermoplastic polyurethane/Triclosan (Tencel/LMPET-TPU/TCL) laminated membranes. Field-emission scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and FTIR show needle-punched Tencel/LMPET membranes successfully coated with TPU/TCL laminated membranes, thereby extensively improving nonwoven membranes in terms of water-resistant, windproof, and antimicrobial attributes. Parameters including needle punch depth, content of LMPET fibers, and concentration of TCL are changed during the production. Specifically, Tencel/LMPET-TPU/TCL-0.1 laminated nonwovens acquire good water resistance (100 kPa), outstanding windproof performance (<0.1 cm3/cm2/s), and good antimicrobial ability against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Made with a green production process that is pollution-free, the proposed products are windproof, water resistant, and antimicrobial, which ensures promising uses in the medical and protective textile fields.

Field investigation of the heat stress in outdoor of healthcare workers wearing personal protective equipment in South China

Since the advent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), healthcare workers (HCWs) wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) has become a common phenomenon. COVID-19 outbreaks overlap with heat waves, and healthcare workers must unfortunately wear PPE during hot weather and experience excessive heat stress. Healthcare workers are at risk of developing heat-related health problems during hot periods in South China. The investigation of thermal response to heat stress among HCWs when they do not wear PPE and when they finish work wearing PPE, and the impact of PPE use on HCWs' physical health were conducted. The field survey were conducted in Guangzhou, including 11 districts. In this survey, HCWs were invited to answer a questionnaire about their heat perception in the thermal environment around them. Most HCWs experienced discomfort in their back, head, face, etc., and nearly 80% of HCWs experienced "profuse sweating." Up to 96.81% of HCWs felt "hot" or "very hot." The air temperature had a significant impact on thermal comfort. Healthcare workers' whole thermal sensation and local thermal sensation were increased significantly by wearing PPE and their thermal sensation vote (TSV) tended towards "very hot." The adaptive ability of the healthcare workers would decreased while wearing PPE. In addition, the accept range of the air temperature (T _a) were determined in this investigation. Highly Breathable and Abrasion-Resistant Membranes with Micro-/Nano-Channels for Eco-Friendly Moisture-Wicking Medical Textiles

One-way water transport is a predominant feature of comfortable textiles used in daily life. However, shortcomings related to the textiles include their poor breathability and durability. In this study, low-cost and eco-friendly PLA/low-melt (polylactic acid) LMPLA-thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) membranes were fabricated through a needle punch/hot press and electrospinning method. The micro-/nano-channels, used for the first time, endowed the composite membranes with robust, breathable, moisture-permeable, and abrasion-resistant performance. By varying the nano- layer thickness, the resulting 16-40 μm membranes exhibited excellent one-way water transport, robust breathability and moisture permeability, and good abrasion resistance. Nano-layer thickness was found to be a critical performance factor, balancing comfort and protection. These results may be useful for developing low-cost, eco-friendly, and versatile protective products for medical application.

Thermal and humid environment improvement of the protective clothing for medical use with a portable cooling device: Analysis of air supply parameters

COVID-19 has caused a huge impact on people's daily life and has made great damage on national economy. All the epidemic situation not only require the improvement of medical science, but also the corresponding auxiliary research field, e.g. the improve of protective clothing for medical use (MUPC). Developing a new kind of MUPC with portable cooling devices to improve medical workers' thermal comfort and protection performance of MUPC is imminent. In this paper, an integrated MUPC with a portable vortex tube cooling device was studied with experimental method. In a phytotron, a manikin wearing the MUPC was experimentally studied in terms of the influence of environment temperature and cool air supply conditions. On the basis of experiments, the MUPC inside air temperature and relative humidity, skin temperature of human body was studied with simulation method. Overall thermal sensation vote (TSV) and local TSV of human body were calculated, based on simulation results, to evaluate human thermal sensation. The results showed that, first, 50 L/min cool air flowrate with 18-20 °C supply temperature can create a good MUPC inside thermal sensation environment, for both head supply and body supply conditions. Both body supply condition and head supply condition cannot create a uniform MUPC inside thermal sensation environment. Second, MUPC inside air relative humidity is around or lower than 60% for most body parts, except for air supply position and body parts that air is difficult to reach. Thirdly, with cool air supplied into MUPC, a micro-positive pressure environment can be obtained, and the protection performance of MUPC can be improved.

Short-Branched Fluorinated Polyurethane Coating Exhibiting Good Comprehensive Performance and Potential UV Degradation in Leather Waterproofing Modification

In the current leather market, waterproof leather occupies a large proportion, where waterproofness has become one of the important standards for leather selection. However, the most advanced fluorine-containing waterproofing agents on the market always have long chains of over eight carbons (C8), whose use has been restricted due to their bioaccumulation and recalcitrance in natural environment. Consequently, creating waterproof materials characterized by their environmentally friendly qualities and high performance is of great significance. Herein, we report a novel strategy for preparation of the fluorinated polyurethanes containing short branched fluorocarbon chains, and apply it in leather waterproofing. Because the fluorine-containing chain segments are enriched on the coating surface, the waterproof agent coating shows good hydrophobicity, low water absorption, high wear resistance and potential photodegradation of performances. Additionally, the water and oil proof performances of the coating are comparable to that of the marketed C8 waterproofing agent. Its solvent-resistant and antifouling performances are also outstanding. Therefore, the coating can meet the property requirements for daily use and has broad application prospects.

Multifunctional, Waterproof, and Breathable Nanofibrous Textiles Based on Fluorine-Free, All-Water-Based Coatings

Developing environmentally benign, multifunctional waterproof and breathable membranes (WBMs) is of great importance but still faces enormous challenges. Here, an environmentally benign fluorine-free, ultraviolet (UV) blocking, and antibacterial WBM with a high level of waterproofness and breathability is developed on a large scale by combining electrospinning and step-by-step surface coating technology. Fluorine-free water-based alkylacrylates with long hydrocarbon chains were coated onto polyamide 6 fibrous membranes to construct robust hydrophobic surfaces. The subsequent titanium dioxide nanoparticle emulsion coating prominently decreased the maximum pore size, leading to higher water resistance, endowing the membranes with efficient UV-resistant and antibacterial properties. The resulting fibrous membranes possessed excellent waterproofness of 106.2 kPa, exceptional breathability of 10.3 kg m^-2 d^-1, a significant UV protection factor of 430.5, together with a definite bactericidal efficiency of 99.9%. We expect that this methodology for construction of environmentally benign and multifunctional WBMs will shed light on the material design, and the prepared membranes could implement their promising applications in covering materials, outdoor equipment, protective clothing, and high-altitude garments.

Fluorine-Free Waterborne Coating for Environmentally Friendly, Robustly Water-Resistant, and Highly Breathable Fibrous Textiles

Waterproof and breathable membranes (WBMs) with simultaneous environmental friendliness and high performance are highly desirable in a broad range of applications; however, creating such materials still remains a tough challenge. Herein, we present a facile and scalable strategy to fabricate fluorine-free, efficient, and biodegradable WBMs via step-by-step dip-coating and heat curing technology. The hyperbranched polymer (ECO) coating containing long hydrocarbon chains provided an electrospun cellulose acetate (CA) fibrous matrix with high hydrophobicity; meanwhile, the blocked isocyanate cross-linker (BIC) coating ensured the strong attachment of hydrocarbon segments on CA surfaces. The resulting membranes (TCA) exhibited integrated properties with waterproofness of 102.9 kPa, breathability of 12.3 kg m^-2 d^-1, and tensile strength of 16.0 MPa, which are much superior to that of previously reported fluorine-free fibrous materials. Furthermore, TCA membranes can sustain hydrophobicity after exposure to various harsh environments. More importantly, the present strategy proved to be universally applicable and effective to several other hydrophilic fibrous substrates. This work not only highlights the material design and preparation but also provides environmentally friendly and high-performance WBMs with great potential application prospects for a variety of fields.

Tuning the gradient structure of highly breathable, permeable, directional water transport in bi-layered Janus fibrous membranes using electrospinning

In this paper, a novel bi-layered Janus fibrous electrospun membrane with robust moisture permeable, breathable and directional water transport properties is successfully fabricated and reported for the first time. This fibrous membrane consists of a thin inner layer of hydrophobic thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and a thick outer layer of super hydrophilic polyacrylonitrile (PAN). The PAN layer is coated with dopamine (PDA) to tailor the wettability. The subsequent TPU–PAN/PDA membrane demonstrates outstanding wettability and thickness gradients, which facilitate directional water transport from the TPU to the PAN/PDA layer and improve the WVT rate to 9065 g m⁻² d⁻¹ and the air permeability to 100 mm s⁻¹ (5.0 times higher than a commercial membrane). Furthermore, a plausible mechanism explaining the bi-layered Janus fibrous membrane performance is studied. The fibrous membrane is suggested to be a promising candidate for various applications, especially in moisture-wicking clothing.

In this paper, a novel bi-layered Janus fibrous electrospun membrane with robust moisture permeable, breathable and directional water transport properties is successfully fabricated and reported for the first time.

Facile fabrication of fluorine-free breathable poly(methylhydrosiloxane)/polyurethane fibrous membranes with enhanced water-resistant capability

HYPOTHESIS

Ideal breathable and waterproof materials contain two key elements: hydrophobic matrix and small pore size. Current high-performing breathable waterproof membranes usually employ fluorinated materials to construct hydrophobic surface, which possess alarming potential environmental hazards. Fluorine-free waterproof agents through coating treatment to obtain hydrophobicity suffer from complicated fabrication process and poor durability. Hence, non-fluorinated chemicals incorporated into fibers via a facile one-step electrospinning may be an effective approach to attain durable hydrophobic membranes.

EXPERIMENTS

Poly(methylhydrosiloxane)/polyurethane (PMHS/PU) solution with various PMHS concentration was formulated and electrospun to fibrous membranes, followed by a facile thermal treatment process. A systematic study including morphologies, porous structure, and surface wettability was performed. Breathable waterproof performance and tensile strength were also investigated.

FINDINGS

Added PMHS imparted mighty hydrophobicity to the membranes with a water contact angle of 130.2°, and the subsequent heat treatment greatly improved waterproofness, meanwhile doubled the tensile strength. The resultant membranes exhibited robust hydrostatic pressure of 54.1 kPa, medium breathability of 9.5 kg m^-2 d^-1, and excellent stretching stress of 14.1 MPa, which can meet the requirements of general use. The presented strategy on membrane fabrication is feasible and scalable, which may be considered as an effective remedy for environmental protection.

A New Strategy for the Synthesis of Fluorinated Polyurethane

An alternating fluorinated copolymer based on chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) and butyl vinyl ether (BVE) was synthesized by RAFT/MADIX living/controlled polymerization in the presence of S-benzyl O-ethyl dithiocarbonate (BEDTC). Then, using the obtained poly(CTFE-alt-BVE) as a macro chain transfer agent (macro-CTA), a block copolymer was prepared by chain extension polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc). After a basic methanolysis process, the poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) block was transferred into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). Finally, a novel fluorinated polyurethane with good surface properties due to the mobility of the flexible fluorinated polymer chains linked to the network was obtained via reaction of the copolymer bearing the blocks of PVA with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as a cross-linking agent.

Rechargeable polyamide-based N-halamine nanofibrous membranes for renewable, high-efficiency, and antibacterial respirators

Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) have been acknowledged as a major public health concern worldwide. Unfortunately, most protective respirators used to prevent EID transmission suffer from the disadvantage of lacking antimicrobial activity, leading to an increased risk of cross-contamination and post-infection. Herein, we report a novel and facile strategy to fabricate rechargeable and biocidal air filtration materials by creating advanced N-halamine structures based on electrospun polyamide (PA) nanofibers. Our approach can endow the resultant nanofibrous membranes with powerful biocidal activity (6 log CFU reduction against E. coli), an ultrahigh fine particle capture efficiency of 99.999% (N100 level for masks), and can allow the antibacterial efficacy and air filtration performance to be renewed in a one-step chlorination process, which has never been reported before. More importantly, for the first time, we revealed the synergistic effect involving the intrinsic structure of polymers and the assembling structure of nanofibers on the chlorination capacity. The successful fabrication of such a fascinating membrane can provide new insights into the development of nanofibrous materials in a multifunctional, durable, and renewable form.

Waterproof and Breathable Electrospun Nanofibrous Membranes

Waterproof and breathable (W&B) membranes combine fascinating properties of resistance to liquid water penetration and transmitting of water vapor, playing a key role in addressing problems related to health, resources, and energy. Electrospinning is an efficient and advanced way to construct nanofibrous materials with easily tailored wettability and adjustable pore structure, therefore providing an ideal strategy for constructing W&B membranes. In this review, recent progress on electrospun W&B membranes is summarized, involving materials design and fabrication, basic properties of electrospun W&B membranes associated with waterproofness and breathability, as well as their applications. In addition, challenges and future trends of electrospun W&B membranes are discussed.

Human Skin-Like, Robust Waterproof, and Highly Breathable Fibrous Membranes with Short Perfluorobutyl Chains for Eco-Friendly Protective Textiles

Flexible smart membranes with superior waterproofness and extreme breathability are highly desirable for wearable uses. However, present waterproof and breathable materials suffer from limited performance efficiency, alarming environmental risks, and complicated fabrication procedures. We report on eco-friendly fibrous membranes with human skin-like, robust waterproof, and highly breathable capabilities that can be prepared via a facile electrospinning strategy. A novel polyurethane elastomer (C4FPU) possessing double-terminal short perfluorobutyl (-C₄F₉) chain is synthesized for the first time and incorporated into the polyurethane (PU) fiber matrix, endowing the membrane with mighty and durable hydrophobicity. Additionally, the employment of AgNO₃ greatly decreased the maximum pore size ( d_max), contributing to the dramatically enhanced waterproofness. The resulting PU/C4FPU/AgNO₃ fibrous membranes exhibit comprehensive properties of exceptional hydrostatic pressure (102.8 kPa), excellent water vapor transmission rate (12.9 kg m^-2 d^-1), high mechanical property (9.8 MPa), and significant antibacterial efficacy against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The successful synthesis of these intriguing membranes may provide a promising candidate for the new generation of key building blocks of the upscale protective garments.

Sandwich-structured composite fibrous membranes with tunable porous structure for waterproof, breathable, and oil-water separation applications

HYPOTHESIS

In general, microporous membranes with waterproofness, breathability, and oil-water separation performance are prepared from hydrophobic raw materials and demonstrated to exhibit an interconnected porous structure. Hence, constructing porous and gradient-structured composite membranes by integrating robust hydrophobic/lipophilic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and breathable polyurethane (PU) microporous membranes could help realize a selective separation process.

EXPERIMENT

Here, novel polyvinylidene fluoride-carbon nanotube/polyurethane/polyvinylidene fluoride-carbon nanotube (PVDF-CNT/PU/PVDF-CNT) sandwich-structured microporous membranes were fabricated by sequential electrospinning. The influence of the thickness ratios of PVDF/PU/PVDF and carbon nanotube (CNT) content on the fibrous construction, porous structure, and wettability of the composite membranes was systematically studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), pore size, porosity and contact angle. Significantly, the effect of the fibrous construction, porous structure, and wettability on the waterproofness, breathability, and oil-water separation ability of the composite membranes was investigated.

FINDINGS

The novel separation system proved the 'complementary effect' between the PVDF and PU membranes. Further, because of the elaborate gradient construction, superior porous structure, and robust hydrophobicity-oleophilicity, the resultant membranes exhibited moderate waterproofness (38 kPa) and excellent breathability (8.63 kg m^-2 d^-1), and oil-water separation, confirming that they could be promising alternatives for numerous practical applications, such as protective clothing, treatment of oil-contaminated water, and membrane distillation.

Environmentally Friendly and Breathable Fluorinated Polyurethane Fibrous Membranes Exhibiting Robust Waterproof Performance

Waterproof and breathable membranes that provide a high level of protection and comfort are promising core materials for meeting the pressing demand for future upscale protective clothing. However, creating such materials that exhibit environmental protection, high performance, and ease of fabrication has proven to be a great challenge. Herein, we report a novel strategy for synthesizing fluorinated polyurethane (C6FPU) containing short perfluorohexyl (-C₆F₁₃) chains and introduced it as hydrophobic agent into a polyurethane (PU) solution for one-step electrospinning. A plausible mechanism about the dynamic behavior of fluorinated chains with an increasing C6FPU concentration was proposed. Benefiting from the utilization of magnesium chloride (MgCl₂), the fibrous membranes had dramatically decreased maximum pore sizes. Consequently, the prepared PU/C6FPU/MgCl₂ fibrous membranes exhibited an excellent hydrostatic pressure of 104 kPa, a modest water vapor transmission rate of 11.5 kg m^-2 d^-1, and a desirable tensile strength of 12.4 MPa. The facile fabrication of PU/C6FPU/MgCl₂ waterproof and breathable membranes not only matches well with the tendency to be environmentally protective but also fully meets the requirements for high performance in extremely harsh environments.

Fluorinated polyurethane based on liquid fluorine elastomer (LFH) synthesis via two-step method: the critical value of thermal resistance and mechanical properties

FPU gains optimal thermal stability and mechanical property when a novel soft segment-LFH increases to critical value (18 wt%), even if the cured films being immersed into hot water and oil.

Designing waterproof breathable material with moisture unidirectional transport characteristics based on a TPU/TBAC tree-like and TPU nanofiber double-layer membrane fabricated by electrospinning

The waterproof breathable double-layer membrane (inside was TPU-NMs and outside was TPU/TBAC-TLNMs) with both functions of protection and moisture unidirectional transport was successfully prepared by direct combination using electrospinning.

Slip-Effect Functional Air Filter for Efficient Purification of PM2.5

Fabrication of air filtration materials (AFM) that allow air to easily flow through while retaining particles is a significant and urgent need due to the harmful airborne particulate matter pollution; however, this is still a challenging research area. Herein, we report novel slip-effect functional nanofibrous membranes with decreased air resistance (reduction rate of 40%) due to the slip flow of air molecules on the periphery of nanofibers. This was achieved through careful control over the diameters of electrospun polyacrylonitrile fibers and aperture size of fiber assembly. Fiber assembly with 86% of fiber diameters between 60–100 nm was found to be most effective for slip flow, as these diameters are close to the mean free path of air molecules (65.3 nm). Significantly, an equilibrium factor τ = d_f/d² has been introduced to elucidate the effect of distance of adjacent fibers on the drag force of airflow. Furthermore, the most effective aperture size (>3.5 μm) for slip-effect has been determined. Ultimately, the new material displayed low air resistance of 29.5 Pa, high purification efficiency of 99.09%, good transmittance of 77%, and long service life. The successful fabrication of such materials can facilitate the development of high-performance AFMs for various applications.

Thermally induced chemical cross-linking reinforced fluorinated polyurethane/polyacrylonitrile/polyvinyl butyral nanofibers for waterproof-breathable application

Thermally induced chemical cross-linking could enhance the FPAN/PVB/BIP composite nanofibrous membranes with robust mechanical, waterproof and breathable performance.
