Alginate Modified Magnetic Polypyrrole Nanocomposite for the Adsorptive Removal of Heavy Metal

The presence of heavy metals with high acute toxicity in wastewater poses a substantial risk to both the environment and human health. To address this issue, we developed a nanocomposite of alginate-encapsulated polypyrrole (PPy) decorated with α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (Alg@Mag/PPy NCs), fabricated for the removal of mercury(II) from synthetic wastewater. In the adsorption experiments, various parameters were examined to identify the ideal conditions. These parameters included temperature (ranging from 298 to 323 K), initial pH levels (ranging from two to nine), interaction time, amount of adsorbent (from 8 to 80 mg/40 mL), and initial concentrations (from 10 to 200 mg/L). The results of these studies demonstrated that the removal efficiency of mercury(II) was obtained to be 95.58% at the optimum pH of 7 and a temperature of 303 K. The analysis of adsorption kinetics demonstrated that the removal of mercury(II) adhered closely to the pseudo-second-order model. Additionally, it displayed a three-stage intraparticle diffusion model throughout the entire adsorption process. The Langmuir model most accurately represented equilibrium data. The Alg@Mag/PPy NCs exhibited an estimated maximum adsorption capacity of 213.72 mg/g at 303 K, surpassing the capacities of most of the other polymer-based adsorbents previously reported. The thermodynamic analysis indicates that the removal of mercury(II) from the Alg@Mag/PPy NCs was endothermic and spontaneous in nature. In summary, this study suggests that Alg@Mag/PPy NCs could serve as a promising choice for confiscating toxic heavy metal ions from wastewater through adsorption.

Adsorption isotherms and kinetics for Pb(ii) ion removal from aqueous solutions with biogenic metal oxide nanoparticles

This study investigates the sorption removal of lead(ii) ions using zinc oxide (ZnO) and copper(ii) oxide (CuO) nanoparticles synthesized through a wet burning method with the aid of plant extract from Serratula coronata L. The effect of plant collection time on polyphenol content was investigated and optimal conditions were determined. The structural and chemical properties of the nanoparticles were studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis, X-ray phase analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A comparative analysis of lead ion sorption on the surface of synthesized nanoparticles was conducted. The kinetic study revealed that the sorption process follows a pseudo-second-order mechanism, and the Freundlich sorption model provides a better fit for the experimental data. ZnO and CuO nanoparticles exhibited significant sorption capacities, with values of 163.6 and 153.8 mg g-1, respectively.

Adsorption and desorption characteristics of arsenic in calcareous soils as a function of time; equilibrium and thermodynamic study

Irrigation of carbonate-rich agricultural soils with arsenic (As)-contaminated water leads to the accumulation of As in these soils. In this regard, there is an opportunity to adsorb and fix the As in soil and decrease the As transportation to the plants and subsequently the human food chain. So, the present study aimed to investigate the adsorption-desorption characteristics of As in calcareous soils and the potential of As fixation over time. First, to achieve this purpose, 53 soil samples were gathered from the study site and after the laboratory analysis, the soils were categorized into four groups based on their physicochemical properties. Then, four representative samples of these groups were selected, namely soil 1, soil 2, soil 3, and soil 4. Afterward, the As adsorption-desorption was investigated in a lab-scale batch experiment. Next, the effect of age was assessed by incubating the As-adsorbed soils for 60 days, and to study the impact of temperature, the adsorption was performed at four temperature levels (10, 20, 30, and 40 °C). Finally, the isotherm models were fitted to experimental data, and the amount of loosely and tightly held As was quantified. Results revealed that the As adsorption isotherms were L-type, in which As adsorption increased with the increase of As loading. The double-site Langmuir (DSL) estimated that a limited amount of As was adsorbed on high-energy surfaces and a large amount of As was adsorbed on low-energy surfaces. Desorption results showed that a significant amount of As desorbed immediately; however, the desorption significantly decreased with the increase of age, especially at low equilibrium concentrations. By aging the loosely held As transformed into non-labile forms so that in soils 1, 2, 3, and 4, the fraction of As adsorbed on high-energy surfaces increased from 72.5, 93.2, 63.2, and 123 mg/kg to 167, 141, 70.6, and 196 mg/kg, respectively, and the fraction of As adsorbed on low-energy surfaces decreased from 397, 256, 202, and 317 mg/kg to 182, 238, 173, and 172 mg/kg, respectively (after aging for 60 days). Aging proved to be a promising solution for decreasing As transport into the human food chain and could be employed for crops with longer irrigation cycles. ΔH_ad values were positive and varied from 9.26 to 13.0 kJ/mol, confirming the endothermic nature of adsorption. ΔG_ad values were negative and varied from - 18.8 to - 22.8 kJ/mol at all temperatures, demonstrating the spontaneous nature of adsorption.

Carbon-Based Ternary Nanocomposite: Bullet Type ZnO-SWCNT-CuO for Substantial Solar-Driven Photocatalytic Decomposition of Aqueous Organic Contaminants

A facile two-step synthesis of ternary hetero-composites of ZnO, CuO, and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was developed through a recrystallization process followed by annealing. A series of nanocomposites were prepared by varying the weight ratio of copper(II) acetate hydrate and zinc(II) acetate dihydrate and keeping the weight ratio of SWCNTs constant. The results revealed the formation of heterojunctions (ZnO-SWCNT-CuO, ZSC) of three crystal structures adjacent to each other, forming a ternary wurtzite-structured nanoparticles along with defects. Enhanced charge separation (electron-hole pairs), reduced band gap, defect-enhanced specific surface area, and promoted oxidation potential were key factors for the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the ternary nanocomposites. OH^• radicals were the main active species during dye degradation, and O₂^-• and h⁺ were also involved to a lesser extent. A type II heterojunction mechanism approach is proposed based on the charge carrier migration pattern. Among the synthesized nanocomposites, the sample prepared using copper(II) acetate hydrate and zinc(II) acetate dihydrate in a 1: 9 ratio (designated a ZSC3) showed the highest photocatalytic activity. ZSC3 achieved 99.2% photodecomposition of methylene blue in 20 min, 94.1% photodecomposition of Congo red in 60 min, and 99.6% photodecomposition of Rhodamine B in 40 min under simulated sunlight. Additionally, ZSC3 showed excellent reusability and stability, maintaining 96.7% of its activity even after five successive uses. Based on overall results, the ZSC sample was proposed as an excellent candidate for water purification applications.

Natural, low-cost adsorbents for toxic Pb(II) ion sequestration from (waste)water: A state-of-the-art review

Pb(II) ions is an inorganic pollutant that is present in the environment. Its presence affects both human health and ecosystem. Economically, amongst many wastewater treatment approaches, adsorption is both cheap and environmentally friendly for removing Pb(II) ion from contaminated water. In this state of the art review, about 227 research and review based publications on adsorption-based studies between 1989 and 2021, which have used various materials as adsorbents of Pb (II) ions, were selected and reviewed for more evaluation. A number of adsorbents which have been reported in these literatures for the adsorption of Pb(II) ion are agrobased, modified agrobased, clay minerals, modified/nanocomposite clay minerals, silica-based, zeolite-based and chitosan-based adsorbents, respectively. The adsorption potential of the adsorbents is exhibited under optimum experimental conditions. The unmodified and modified agro based adsorbents were shown to exhibit the greatest Pb(II) adsorption capacity, with great potential for further exploration, compared to the others afore-listed. The effects of operating parameters such as pH, initial metal ion concentration, adsorbent dose and reaction time are discussed. Furthermore, in order to comprehend the nature of adsorption process between the adsorbent and contaminant (Pb(II)), thermodynamic analyses of adsorption systems are intensively described. All these discussions revealed the applicability of adsorption process for toxic Pb(II) ions removal with respect to wastewater treatment techniques. The review concludes by commenting on the various adsorbents' adsorption capacity and proposes some studies that should also be considered in future works.

Removal of decidedly lethal metal arsenic from water using metal organic frameworks: a critical review

Water contamination is worldwide issue, undermining whole biosphere, influencing life of a large number of individuals all over the world. Water contamination is one of the chief worldwide danger issues for death, sickness, and constant decrease of accessible drinkable water around the world. Among the others, presence of arsenic, is considered as the most widely recognized lethal contaminant in water bodies and poses a serious threat not exclusively to humans but also towards aquatic lives. Hence, steps must be taken to decrease quantity of arsenic in water to permissible limits. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with outstanding stability, sorption capacities, and ecofriendly performance have empowered enormous improvements in capturing substantial metal particles. MOFs have been affirmed as good performance adsorbents for arsenic removal having extended surface area and displayed remarkable results as reported in literature. In this review we look at MOFs which have been recently produced and considered for potential applications in arsenic metal expulsion. We have delivered a summary of up-to-date abilities as well as significant characteristics of MOFs used for this removal. In this review conventional and advanced materials applied to treat water by adsorptive method are also discussed briefly.

Kinetic and Isotherm Study of As(III) Removal from Aqueous Solution by PET Track-Etched Membranes Loaded with Copper Microtubes

This paper reports on the synthesis and structure elucidation of track-etched membranes (TeMs) with electrolessly deposited copper microtubes (prepared in etched-only and oxidized polyethylene terephthalate (PET) TeMs), as well as on the comparative testing of arsenic (III) ion removal capacities through bath adsorption experiments. The structure and composition of composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction technique and scanning electron and atomic force microscopies. It was determined that adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the adsorption rate constants were calculated. A comparative study of the applicability of the adsorption models of Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich was carried out in order to describe the experimental isotherms of the prepared composite TeMs. The constants and parameters of all of the above equations were determined. By comparing the regression coefficients R2, it was shown that the Freundlich model describes the experimental data on the adsorption of arsenic through the studied samples better than others. Free energy of As(III) adsorption on the samples was determined using the Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm model and was found to be 17.2 and 31.6 kJ/mol for Cu/PET and Cu/Ox_PET samples, respectively. The high EDr value observed for the Cu/Ox_PET composite indicates that the interaction between the adsorbate and the composite is based on chemisorption.

Heterojunction formation between copper(II) oxide nanoparticles and single-walled carbon nanotubes to enhance antibacterial performance

We delineate the excellent bactericidal efficacy of stable heterojunction nanocomposites composed of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and copper(II) oxide (CuO) synthesized via facile recrystallization and calcination. The bactericidal effectiveness of the fabricated nanocomposites was examined using the standard broth-dilution method and the growth-inhibition-zone analysis method, in which bacteria cultured in an incubator in tryptic soy broth medium were subjected to the prepared samples. The bactericidal activity of all of the as-synthesized samples is evident in both methods, displaying a substantial decrease in bacterial colonies and resulting in clear inhibition zones, respectively. Among the CuO-SWCNT nanocomposites, the sample subjected to calcination at 500 °C for 5 h was found to exhibit the best performance against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, forming inhibition zones 182% and 162% larger than those formed by pure CuO, respectively.

Synthesis of alginate-polycation capsules of different composition: characterization and their adsorption for [As(iii)] and [As(v)] from aqueous solutions

The uptake of arsenite [As(iii)] and arsenate [As(v)] by functionalized calcium alginate (Ca-Alg) beads from aqueous solutions was investigated. Ca-Alg beads were protonated with poly-l-lysine (PLL) or polyethyleneimine (PEI) using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) or glutaraldehyde (GA) as crosslinking agents. Four types of protonated beads were prepared: Ca-Alg-EDC/NHS (PLL or PEI) and Ca-Alg-GA (PLL or PEI). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in total attenuated reflection mode (FTIR-ATR), analysis showed presence and increased intensity of bands corresponding to OH, NH, CH₂ and CH₃ groups in modifications with both polycations. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis and atomic force microscopy of all modified capsules showed an increase in thermal stability and uniformity of the capsules, respectively. Ca-Alg-EDC/NHS-PLL beads had the maximum adsorption capacity of [As(v)] (312.9 ± 4.7 μg g⁻¹ of the alginate) at pH 7.0 and 15 minute exposure, while Ca-Alg-EDC/NHS-PEI beads had the maximum adsorption capacity of [As(iii)] (1052.1 ± 4.6 μg g⁻¹ of alginate). However, all these EDC containing beads were degraded in the presence of citrate. Ca-Alg-GA-PEI beads removed 252.8 ± 9.7 μg of [As(v)] μg g⁻¹ of alginate and 524.7 ± 5.3 de [As(iii)] μg g⁻¹ of alginate, resulting the most stable capsules and suitable for As removal.

A simple protonation of alginate beads allows the absorption of arsenate and arsenite.

Covalent organic framework EB-COF:Br as adsorbent for phosphorus (V) or arsenic (V) removal from nearly neutral waters

The covalent organic framework (COF) is made light elements linked by covalent networks. This study synthesize and characterized, and for the first time applied the produced EB-COF:Br as adsorbent for phosphate and arsenate removal from nearly neutral waters. The synthesized COF was first proven structurally stable in solutions of 75% H₃PO₄, 6 M HCl, or 6 M NaOH. Then the phosphate adsorption onto the EB-COF:Br was shown to be an endothermic process with maximum adsorption capacity at 25, 35 and 45 °C as 25.3, 34.7 and 35.3 mg/g COF, respectively; and the corresponding arsenate adsorption process being an exothermic process with maximnum adsorption capacity as 53.1, 27.5 and 5.1 mg/g, respectively. The synthesized COF could also effectively adsorb phosphate and arsenate ions from river water (pH 7.45) but at reduced adsorption capacities. The electrostatic interactions between the negative charge on phosphate or arsenate ions and the positively charged (N⁺-) of COF, and the hydrogen bondings between H atom on phosphate or arsenate ions and the (-CO) group of COF were the dominating mechanisms for the present adsorption process. The strong electrostatic interactions for arsenate contributed to its higer adsorption capacity than noted for phosphate at 25 °C. However, the disturbed hydrogen bonding induced by mismatched sizes of arsenate ion and the adsorption sites surrounded by the (N⁺-) and the (-CO) groups reduced the stability of arsenate to against temperature and external anion challenges. The use of the EB-COF; Br as industrial adsorbent was also discussed.

A review of functional sorbents for adsorptive removal of arsenic ions in aqueous systems

The presence of arsenic in the water system has been a universal problem over the past several decades. Inorganic arsenic ions mainly occur in two oxidation states, As(V) and As(III), in the natural environment. These two oxidation states of arsenic ions are ubiquitous in natural waters and pose significant health hazards to humans when present at or above the allowable limits. Therefore, treatment of arsenic ions has become more stringent based on various techniques (e.g., membrane filtration, adsorption, and ion exchange). This paper aims to review the current knowledge on various functional adsorbents through comparison of removal potential for As on the basis of key performance metrics, especially the partition coefficient (PC). As a whole, novel materials exhibited far better removal performance for As(V) and As(III) than conventional materials. Of the materials reviewed, the advanced sorbent like ZrO(OH)₂/CNTs showcased superior performances such as partition coefficient values of 584.6 (As(V) and 143.8 mol kg^-1 M^-1 (As(III) with excellent regenerability (>90 % of desorption efficiency after three sorption cycles). The results of this review are expected to help researchers to establish a powerful strategy for abatement of arsenic ions in wastewater.

Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalysis of Nanocomposites of Copper Oxide and Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for the Degradation of Methylene Blue

We report enhanced catalytic action of a series of copper(II)-oxide-single-walled carbon nanotube (CuO-SWCNT) composite photocatalysts (abbreviated as CuO-SWCNT-0.5, CuO-SWCNT-2, and CuO-SWCNT-5, where 0.5, 2, and 5 represent the calcination time in hours) synthesized via recrystallization followed by calcination. The photocatalytic performance of the fabricated nanocomposites was examined by evaluating the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under irradiation with visible light. All of the as-fabricated nanocomposites were effective photocatalysts for the photodegradation of a MB solution; however, the CuO-SWCNT-5 displayed the best photocatalytic ability among the investigated catalysts, achieving 97.33% degradation of MB in 2 h under visible-light irradiation. The photocatalytic action of the nanocomposites was remarkably higher than that of pristine CuO nanocrystals fabricated using the same route. The recyclability of the photocatalyst was also investigated; the CuO-SWCNT-5 catalyst could be reused for three cycles without substantial degradation of its catalytic performance or morphology.

Arsenate removal from aqueous solutions by cuttlebone/copper oxide nanobiocomposite

This study aims to illustrate the preparation of a new nanobiocomposite by incorporating copper oxide nanoparticles into cuttlebone matrix (CB/CuO NPs), and it was tested to define how effective it was to adsorb and remove arsenate from aqueous systems. CB is the bone tissue of cuttlefish with high porosity, permeability, and low cost. CuO NPs have been introduced as an effective arsenate adsorbent. Producing nanocomposite by introducing of CuO NPs in the structure of CB enhanced their stability and facilitated their separation from solution. Incorporation of CuO NPs in the structure of CB enhanced the adsorption capacity of CB. The adsorption data were fitted with both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms, but Langmuir isotherm exhibited better matching rather than Freundlich isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity (q_max) was calculated from Langmuir adsorption isotherm which was around 25.13 mg g^-1. Kinetic data fitted well to the pseudo-second-order reaction model. The results indicate that the possible mechanism of arsenate adsorption on CB/CuO is through development of inner sphere complex. Simple preparation and abundant and good adsorption capacity in the presence of calcium ions indicate that the CB/CuO is suitable for removal of arsenate from contaminated drinking water.

Enhanced capacity of fluoride scavenging from contaminated water by nano-architectural reorientation of cerium-incorporated hydrous iron oxide with graphene oxide

An in situ wet chemical deposition method has been applied for the successful surface modification of Ce (IV)-incorporated hydrous Fe(III) oxide (CIHFO) with a hydrophilic graphene precursor, graphene oxide (GO). The surface area of as-prepared composite (GO-CIHFO) has enhanced (189.57 m² g^-1) compared with that of pristine CIHFO (140.711 m² g^-1) and has irregular surface morphology consisting of microcrystals (~ 2-3 nm) and mesoporous (3.5486 nm) structure. The GO-CIHFO composite shows enhanced fluoride scavenging capacity (136.24 mg F g^-1) than GO (3 mg F g^-1) and pristine CIHFO (32.62 mg F g^-1) at pH 7.0. Also, in acidic pH range and at 323 K temperature, the Langmuir capacity of as-prepared composite is 190.61 mg F g^-1. It has been observed that fluoride removal by GO-CIHFO occurs from solutions obeying pseudo-second-order kinetics and multilayer adsorption process. The film/boundary layer diffusion process is also the rate-determining step. The nature of the adsorption reaction is reasonably spontaneous and endothermic in thermodynamic sense. It was observed that 1.2 g.L^-1 of GO-CIHFO dosage can effectively optimise the fluoride level of natural groundwater samples (9.05 mg L^-1) to the desirable permissible limit. Reactivation of used material up to a level of 73.77% with a solution of alkaline pH has proposed reusability of nanocomposites ensuring sustainability of the proposed material as fluoride scavenger in future.

Evaluation of hybrid anion exchanger containing cupric oxide for As(III) removal from water

The aim of this study was investigate of arsenite adsorption on a hybrid polymer based on a polystyrene/divinylbenzene macroporous anion exchanger containing cupric oxide deposited within its porous structure. The study included batch kinetic and equilibrium experiments, and investigation of influence of the pH, regeneration of spent adsorbent and the column process on arsenic(III) adsorption. The experimental data were evaluated using kinetic, isotherm and fixed-bed column models. The adsorption capacity calculated from the Langmuir model was 6.61 mg As(III) g^-1. The adsorption rate was controlled by both chemisorption of arsenic on the adsorbent surface and external diffusion, and at a higher initial As(III) concentration also by intraparticle diffusion. The spent adsorbent was easily regenerated with 1.0 M NaOH solution. Based on batch adsorption studies and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analyses a mechanism of As(III) adsorption was proposed. Arsenite removal proceeded in two stages: oxidation to arsenate on the CuO surface, followed by an ion exchange reaction. The studied hybrid polymer also showed very good adsorption characteristics under the dynamic regime. The S-shape of breakthrough curves and insignificant influence of bed height, initial concentration and flow rate on the adsorption capacity confirmed its applicability in water treatment.

Redox synergistic Mn-Al-Fe and Cu-Al-Fe ternary metal oxide nano adsorbents for arsenic remediation with environmentally stable As(0) formation

Arsenic mitigation behavior in aqueous systems is being evaluated for Mn-Al-Fe, Cu-Al-Fe nano adsorbents. Morphological, and vibrational spectroscopy analysis are observed with As-OH, and As-O surface complexes. XPS study of individual As(3d) spectra at different parameters is observed with multiplet peak behavior attributed to redox behavior of Mn-Al-Fe, Cu-Al-Fe. Significant proportions of As(0) signal (∼25 at.% in pH 7, ∼78 at.% in pH 2, ∼58 at.% in pH 12) implicate an environmentally stable behavior of these adsorbents to address the arsenic leaching issue. Adsorption kinetics are observed with Pseudo Second Order (PSO) model, and Freundlich model supported multilayer adsorption behavior is observed for adsorption isotherms. Trace metal voltammetry studies are observed with 75-90 % of As(III) mitigation in aliquot samples. Detailed study of Mn(2p), Cu(2p), Fe(2p), and O(1 s) spectra explains redox active, and surface ligand exchange synergism in arsenic adsorption. Low equilibrium concentrations (Ce < 10 ppb) in As(V) systems (C_i ∼ 100 and 500 ppb) indicate the drinking water application of these systems. Cyclic-voltammetry (CV) studies implicate the mitigation and immobilization of arsenic species onto adsorbent by both reduction, and sorption phenomenon.

Adsorption of methylene blue and tetracycline onto biomass-based material prepared by sulfuric acid reflux

The adsorptive removal of environmental pollutants is an effective method for the treatment of contaminated water. Thus, the preparation of adsorbents from low-cost, readily available, and renewable resources has garnered immense attention in recent years. In this study, a facile one-step method for the preparation of a high-capacity adsorbent is demonstrated by refluxing pine cones in concentrated sulfuric acid. With sulfuric acid reflux, the pine cones undergone carbonization as well as functionalization with sulfonic acid groups. The adsorbent demonstrated high adsorption capacity for two emerging organic pollutants, methylene blue (MB) and tetracycline (TC). Different variables such as pH, temperature, contact time, and initial concentration of the pollutants were analyzed and showed that the adsorption capacity for MB increased in a basic pH and vice versa for TC. Also, the elevated temperature favored the adsorption for both MB and TC. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 1666.66, and 357.14 mg g⁻¹ for MB and TC, respectively. In comparison to the pristine pine cone, the sulfuric acid treated pine cone demonstrated an extraordinary improvement in the adsorption capacity. The adsorption of MB and TC was performed from the tap water matrix and similar adsorption capacities were found. A packed glass column was also prepared to demonstrate the adsorption of MB from tap water under flow conditions.

Facile conversion of pine cones into a high-capacity adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue and tetracycline from water.

CuO-Loaded Macroreticular Anion Exchange Hybrid Polymers Obtained via Tetrachlorocuprate(II) Ionic Form

Amberlite IRA900 Cl, the macroreticular, polystyrene/divinylbenzene anion exchanger containing quaternary ammonium groups, was used as the support for copper(II) oxide deposition, and, as a result a new hybrid ion exchanger (HIX) was obtained. The CuO deposit was introduced into the anion exchanger structure in two steps conducted batchwise at ambient temperature. First, the functional groups were transformed from the Cl- into the CuCl42- form, using 5 mol dm−3 NaCl or HCl solution with CuCl2 being added, and then the intermediate product was contacted with NaOH/NaCl solution to precipitate CuO within the polymer beads. A HIX containing as much as 11.5% Cu was obtained. The distribution of the inorganic load within the porous matrix of polymer beads was atypical; CuO was mainly deposited in the outer parts of the beads and only a small amount was in their inner parts. This may be advantageous in some practical applications concerning the removal of harmful admixtures from waters in sorption processes.

Modeling of adsorption behavior of the amine-rich GOPEI aerogel for the removal of As(iii) and As(v) from aqueous media

A nanocomposite of rGO/ZrO₂ prepared by a simple hydrothermal method using GO and ZrOCl₂·8H₂O has been successfully utilized for the removal of fluoride from aqueous solutions by adsorption.
