Abstract
Over the years, porphyrins have arisen as exceptional photosensitizers given their ability to act as chlorophyll-mimicking dyes, thus, transferring energy from the light-collecting areas to the reaction centers, as it happens in natural photosynthesis. For this reason, porphyrin-sensitized TiO2-based nanocomposites have been widely exploited in the field of photovoltaics and photocatalysis in order to overcome the well-known limitations of these semiconductors. However, even though both areas of application share some common working principles, the development of solar cells has led the way in what is referred to the continuous improvement of these architectures, particularly regarding the molecular design of these photosynthetic pigments. Yet, those innovations have not been efficiently translated to the field of dye-sensitized photocatalysis. This review aims at filling this gap by performing an in-depth exploration of the most recent advances in the understanding of the role played by the different structural motifs of porphyrins as sensitizers in light-driven TiO2-mediated catalysis. With this goal in mind, the chemical transformations, as well as the reaction conditions under which these dyes must operate, are taken in consideration. The conclusions drawn from this comprehensive analysis offer valuable hints for the implementation of novel porphyrin-TiO2 composites, which may pave the way toward the fabrication of more efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract
For developing efficient DSCs, anchoring moieties need to be understood in detail with respect to a particular dye. Herein, we have synthesized new Zn-thienyl porphyrin dyes based on pyridyl and hydroxyphenyl anchors and compared with traditional carboxyphenyl anchoring group. The effect of such variation in anchoring groups was investigated with UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as electrochemical studies. The hydroxyphenyl appended dye showed higher molar extinction coefficient and red shifted emission bands. Both pyridyl and hydroxyphenyl dyes showed adsorption over TiO2 semiconductor. The dye loading amount was found to be greater for carboxyphenyl dye due to stronger bidendate coordination of the carboxy group, as revealed by FT-IR studies. The electrochemical potentials were found to be strongly influenced by the anchoring functionality and all the dyes showed positive driving force for electron injection to the conduction band of TiO2 and regeneration of oxidized dye by the redox electrolyte. DSC devices were fabricated for each of the dyes and characterized well. Hydroxyphenyl dye showed higher Voc as a result of lower back reactions. Transient photovoltage decay measurments indicated lower recombination rate in hydroxyphenyl and pyridyl than the carboxyphenyl anchored thienyl porphyrins offering potential for further dye optimization.

Abstract
Anchoring groups adopting a five-membered bidentate chelating are attractive to realize high power conversion efficiency (η) and long-term durability in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In this regard, we chose catechol as an anchoring group that can adopt the chelating. However, the DSSCs with catechol-based sensitizers have never exceeded an η-value of 2 %. These poor photovoltaic performances may be associated with the electron-donating ability of the hydroxy groups in catechol. Considering these, we envisioned that fusing an electron-withdrawing thiazole moiety with a catechol anchoring group would improve its photovoltaic performance. Herein, we report a push-pull porphyrin sensitizer ZnPTC with a thiazolocatechol anchoring group. The DSSC with ZnPTC exhibited η=4.87 %. This value is the highest ever reported for catechol-anchor based DSSCs. Meanwhile, the long-term cell durability was not improved, although the robust anchoring properties were attained under harsh conditions.

Abstract
The three organic dye molecules (JY31, JY32 and JY33) were applied to the photoactive layer in solar cells. Photophysical and photochemical characteristic have been investigated with natural bond orbital (NBO), frontier molecular orbital, ionization potentials, electron affinities, absorption properties, reorganization energies, static first hyperpolarizability, emission characteristics, IR spectra, charge density difference; the influence of alkyl chains and 4-butoxyphenyl on properties were revealed; Subsequently, three new molecules JY33-1, JY33-2 and JY33-3 were designed by inserting the electron withdrawing group -CN into the acceptor part of JY33 in order to understand molecular engineering mechanism. The results show that the three original molecules have relatively high molar extinction coefficients, and the molecule of JY33 with a 4-butoxyphenyl group enables a bathochromic shift in absorption spectrum and is beneficial to improve the hole transport, injection capacity and ICT properties as well as better energy levels matching. The current study provides an effective channel for manipulating performance in materials design of solar cells.

Abstract
New trans-A2B2-porphyrins substituted at phenyl positions were synthesized from 4-methylphthalic acid as a starting material through sequential multistep reactions. These macrocycles were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 19F NMR, 1H-1H COSY NMR, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Computational studies were performed on the porphyrins to investigate various factors such as structural features, electronic energy, energy gaps, and aromaticity. Energy band gap values of these compounds especially N-hydroxyphthalimide-functionalized porphyrins were small that makes them as good candidates for solar cell systems and photocatalysis. Relationships between electronic energies and aromaticity of the compounds were then investigated. The data indicated that the aromaticity features at the center of two series of these compounds (fluorinated and non-fluorinated porphyrins) were in the opposite manner.

Abstract
Here we report the first theoretical characterization of the interface between the CuGaO2 delafossite oxide and the carboxylic (–COOH) and phosphonic acid (–PO3H2) anchoring groups. The promising use of delafossites as effective alternative to nickel oxide in p-type DSSC is still limited by practical difficulties in sensitizing the delafossite surface. Thus, this work provides atomistic insights on the structure and energetics of all the possible interactions between the anchoring functional groups and the CuGaO2 surface species, including the effects of the Mg doping and of the solvent medium. Our results highlight the presence of a strong selectivity toward the monodentate binding mode on surface Ga atoms for both the carboxylic and phosphonic acid groups. Since the binding modes have a strong influence on the hole injection thermodynamics, these findings have direct implications for further development of delafossite based p-type DSSCs.

Abstract
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) have been the subject of wide-ranging studies for many years because of their potential for large-scale manufacturing using roll-to-roll processing allied to their use of earth abundant raw materials. Two main challenges exist for DSC devices to achieve this goal; uplifting device efficiency from the 12 to 14% currently achieved for laboratory-scale 'hero' cells and replacement of the widely-used liquid electrolytes which can limit device lifetimes. To increase device efficiency requires optimized dye injection and regeneration, most likely from multiple dyes while replacement of liquid electrolytes requires solid charge transporters (most likely hole transport materials - HTMs). While theoretical and experimental work have both been widely applied to different aspects of DSC research, these approaches are most effective when working in tandem. In this context, this perspective paper considers the key parameters which influence electron transfer processes in DSC devices using one or more dye molecules and how modelling and experimental approaches can work together to optimize electron injection and dye regeneration.

Abstract
Derived from diarylamine sensitizer diphenyl-(7-pyridin-4-yl-9H-carbazol-2-yl)-amine (N13), a series of novel D[Formula: see text]A carbazole-based organic dye sensitizers with different [Formula: see text]-linkers were designed for searching more effective sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) design. Optimized geometries, electronic structure, and other parameters, which can evaluate the performance of DSSCs effectively and intuitively, were theoretically calculated by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT methods at the M06/6-31G(d,p) level. The results indicated that the maximum absorption wavelength of designed dye was red-shifted and the molar absorption coefficient ([Formula: see text]) became higher. This phenomenon can be explained by the modification of the [Formula: see text]-bridge. The simulated Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) absorption spectrum showed that the designed N,N-diphenyl-7-(5-(7-(5-(pyridin-4-yl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazol-4-yl)thiophen-2-yl)-9H-carbazol-2-amine (N22) dye presents the largest red-shifted absorption band and the designed (E)-N,N-diphenyl-7-(2-(5[Formula: see text]-(pyridin-4-yl)-[2,2[Formula: see text]-bithiophene]-5-yl)vinyl)-9H-carbazol-2-amine (N21) dye showed the largest [Formula: see text], both of them depicted a high short-circuit photocurrent density ([Formula: see text]. Meanwhile, the charge separation hampered by long [Formula: see text]-linkers was also observed. These results are helpful for designing new sensitizers and providing effective guiding to experimental synthesis.

Abstract
A type-I/type-II hybrid dye sensitizer with a pyridyl group and a catechol unit as the anchoring group has been developed and its photovoltaic performance in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is investigated. The sensitizer has the ability to adsorb on a TiO2 electrode through both the coordination bond at Lewis acid sites and the bidentate binuclear bridging linkage at Brønsted acid sites on the TiO2 surface, which makes it possible to inject an electron into the conduction band of the TiO2 electrode by the intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) excitation (type-I pathway) and by the photoexcitation of the dye-to-TiO2 charge transfer (DTCT) band (type-II pathway). It was found that the type-I/type-II hybrid dye sensitizer adsorbed on TiO2 film exhibits a broad photoabsorption band originating from ICT and DTCT characteristics. Here we reveal the photophysical and electrochemical properties of the type-I/type-II hybrid dye sensitizer bearing a pyridyl group and a catechol unit, along with its adsorption modes onto TiO2 film, and its photovoltaic performance in type-I/type-II DSSC, based on optical (photoabsorption and fluorescence spectroscopy) and electrochemical measurements (cyclic voltammetry), density functional theory (DFT) calculation, FT-IR spectroscopy of the dyes adsorbed on TiO2 film, photocurrent-voltage (I-V) curves, incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) spectra, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for DSSC.
