Abstract
Alkyl halide side groups are selectively incorporated into monodispersed, computationally designed coiled-coil-forming peptide nanoparticles. Poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDMAEMA) is polymerized from the coiled-coil periphery using photoinitiated atom transfer radical polymerization (photoATRP) to synthesize well-defined, thermoresponsive star copolymer architectures. This facile synthetic route is readily extended to other monomers for a range of new complex star-polymer macromolecules.

Abstract
Creation of hollow, one-dimensional nanomaterials has gained great recent attention in the chemical and material sciences. In a study aimed at discovering new functional materials of this type, we observed that an amphiphilic diacetylene (DA) derivative, containing an azobenzene moiety and an oligo-ethylene group, self-assembles to form nanotubes and undergoes photopolymerization to form hollow polydiacetylene (PDA) nanotubes with a uniform wall thickness and diameter. The azobenzene-PDA nanotubes are photoresponsive in that on-and-off UV-irradiation leads to a reversible morphological change between straight and bent forms in association with E-Z photoisomerization of the azobenzene group. Owing to the UV-induced structural change feature, the new DA and PDA nanotubes serve as a controlled release material. Accordingly, fluorescent rhodamine B encapsulated inside the nanotubes are effectively released by using repeated on-off UV irradiation. Furthermore, photo-release of rhodamine B was shown to occur in an artemia (brine shrimp).

Abstract
3,4,3',4'-tetrachloroazobenzene known as TCAB is an unwanted product derivate from the degradation of propanil herbicide. In this work UV-visible and infrared spectroscopies were used to experimentally explore the impact of pH and temperature changes of TCAB in aqueous and ethanol solutions. Two isomeric forms, cis and trans, are present in solution. The density functional theory (DFT) with PCM methodology was used to analyze the stability of each isomer in solution phase by the evaluation of solvation energy and frontier orbital energies of TCBA at 25 and 40 °C. This compound has been studied from room temperature to 50 °C, revealing the weakening of trans form with an increment of cis form in ethanol and high temperature. Interestingly, under acid conditions the protonated azo compound was evidenced in solution. We found that the cis form is predominant in aqueous solution at 40 °C and 30 min. Finally, FTIR studies show that the increasing of the temperature promote irreversible structural changes via a trans to cis interconversion process. The derivative results from this study may contributed to understanding of transformation of TCAB in aqueous solution by pH and temperature changes.

Abstract
As a type of functional group, azo-derivatives are commonly used to synthesize responsive materials. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), prepared by acid hydrolysis of cotton, were dewatered and reacted with 2-bromoisobuturyl bromide to form a macro-initiator, which grafted 6-[4-(4-methoxyphenyl-azo) phenoxy] hexyl methacrylate (MMAZO) via atom transfer radical polymerization. The successful grafting was supported by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Solid magnetic resonance carbon spectrum (MAS 13C-NMR). The morphology and surface composition of the poly{6-[4-(4-methoxyphenylazo) phenoxy] hexyl methacrylate} (PMMAZO)-grafted CNCs were confirmed with Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The grafting rate on the macro-initiator of CNCs was over 870%, and the polydispersities of branched polymers were narrow. The crystal structure of CNCs did not change after grafting, as determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The polymer PMMAZO improved the thermal stability of cellulose nanocrystals, as shown by thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). Then the PMMAZO-grafted CNCs were mixed with polyurethane and casted to form a composite film. The film showed a significant light and pH response, which may be suitable for visual acid-alkali measurement and reversible optical storage.

Host-guest self-assembly toward reversible visible-light-responsive switching for bacterial adhesion. Acta Biomater 2018; 76:39-45. [PMID: 30078424 DOI: 10.1016/j.actbio.2018.06.039] [Citation(s) in RCA: 31] [Impact Index Per Article: 5.2] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/12/2018] [Revised: 06/11/2018] [Accepted: 06/30/2018] [Indexed: 12/22/2022]
Abstract
Here we report a facile method to construct reversible visible-light-responsive switching from antibacterial to bioadhesion by host-guest self-assembly of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and azobenzene functionalized polycation/polyanion. The visible-light-responsible azobenzene functionalized polycation, poly{6-[(2,6-dimethoxyphenyl)azo-4-(2',6'-dimethoxy)phenoxy]propyl dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate-random-poly(2-(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl) methacrylate) (Azo-PDMAEMA), was synthesized via quaternization reaction between 2,6,2',6'-tetramethoxy-4-(3-bromopropoxy)azobenzene (AzoOMeBr) and poly(2-(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl) methacrylate) (PDMAEMA), and the polyanion, poly{6-[(2,6-dimethoxyphenyl)azo-4-(2',6'-dimethoxy) phenoxy]hexyl acrylate-random-acrylic acid} (Azo-PAA), was synthesized via esterification reaction between 2,6,2',6'-tetramethoxy-4-(6-hydroxyhexyloxy) azobenzene (AzoOMeOH) and poly(acryloyl chloride) (PAC) and subsequent hydrolysis reactions. The switch surface could be achieved via the alternate host-guest assembly of Azo-PDMAEMA and Azo-PAA onto a β-CD-terminated substratum (Sub-CD) through visible light irradiation. The positively charged Azo-PDMAEMA with quaternary ammonium groups exhibited antimicrobial properties and few bacteria were adhered on the surface, while the negatively charged Azo-PAA with carboxyl acid groups exhibited excellent bioadhesive properties and a large number of bacteria were adhered. Interestingly, the switch between antibacterial and bioadhesive could be realized upon visible light irradiation via alternate assembly of Azo-PDMAEMA and Azo-PAA. The proposed approach to manufacturing visible-light-responsive surface with reversible and alterable biofunctionality switching between antibacterial and bioadhesive is simple and efficient, which is promising for preparation of multifunctional polymeric surfaces to encounter multifarious demands for the biomedical and biotechnological applications. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE Light has attracted great attention in building biointerfaces for its precise spatiotemporal control and convenient operation. However, UV light may damage to biological samples and living tissues, which will limit its applications. This study demonstrates a novel visible-light-responsive surface fabricated through reversible assembly of azobenzene functionalized polycations/polyanions on cyclodextrin (CD)-terminated substrate by host-guest interactions between the visible-light-responsive azobenzene mAzo and CD, which has not been examined previously. It is noted that the azobenzene functionalized polycations show strong antibacterial activities, while the polyanions show excellent bioadhesive properties, as can be switched through the alternate assembly upon visible-light irradiation. This facile and versatile approach to visible-light-responsive surfaces holds great potential for switching of bioadhesion.
