The critical impact of rice straw extractives on biogas and bioethanol production

Extractives are nonstructural constituents of lignocellulosic materials available in small portions; however, their influence on the bioconversion processes cannot be disregarded. This study evaluated the effect of various concentrations of rice straw water extractives (RWE) and ethanol extractives (REE) on enzymatic hydrolysis, anaerobic digestion, and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation productivity. By increasing the RWE or REE concentration, the glucose yield did not change after 72 h of enzymatic hydrolysis. The RWE increment enhanced ethanol yield to 95.6%. However, the REE increment decreased ethanol yield to 32.1%. Adding RWE caused a considerable reduction in the accumulated biogas and changed the composition of produced biogas from 74% methane to less than 1%. By increasing the REE concentration, the accumulated biogas increased from 167.9 to 524.4 ml/g VS. According to the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) results, the most abundant RWE and REE components were 3-hydroxy-Spirost-8-en-11-one and guaiazulene, respectively.

Resource recovery and circular economy from organic solid waste using aerobic and anaerobic digestion technologies

With the inevitable rise in human population, resource recovery from waste stream is becoming important for a sustainable economy, conservation of the ecosystem as well as for reducing the dependence on the finite natural resources. In this regard, a bio-based circular economy considers organic wastes and residues as potential resources that can be utilized to supply chemicals, nutrients, and fuels needed by mankind. This review explored the role of aerobic and anaerobic digestion technologies for the advancement of a bio-based circular society. The developed routes within the anaerobic digestion domain, such as the production of biogas and other high-value chemicals (volatile fatty acids) were discussed. The potential to recover important nutrients, such as nitrogen through composting, was also addressed. An emphasis was made on the innovative models for improved economics and process performance, which include co-digestion of various organic solid wastes, recovery of multiple bio-products, and integrated bioprocesses.

Dilute alkali pretreatment of softwood pine: A biorefinery approach

Dilute alkali pretreatment was performed on softwood pine to maximize ethanol and biogas production via a biorefinery approach. Alkali pretreatments were performed with 0-2% w/v NaOH at 100-180°C for 1-5h. The liquid fraction of the pretreated substrates was subjected to anaerobic digestion. The solid fraction of the pretreatment was used for separate enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation. High ethanol yields of 76.9‒78.0% were achieved by pretreatment with 2% (w/v) NaOH at 180°C. The highest biogas yield of 244mL/g volatile solid (at 25°C, 1bar) was achieved by the pretreatment with 1% (w/v) NaOH at 180°C. The highest gasoline equivalent (sum of ethanol and methane) of 197L per ton of pinewood and the lowest ethanol manufacturing cost of 0.75€/L was obtained after pretreatment with 1% NaOH at 180°C for 5h. The manufacturing cost of ethanol from untreated wood was 4.12€/L.

Novel process combining anaerobic-aerobic digestion and ion exchange resin for full recycling of cassava stillage in ethanol fermentation

A novel cleaner ethanol production process has been developed. Thin stillage is treated initially by anaerobic digestion followed by aerobic digestion and then further treated by chloride anion exchange resin. This allows the fully-digested and resin-treated stillage to be completely recycled for use as process water in the next ethanol fermentation batch, which eliminates wastewater discharges and minimizes consumption of fresh water. The method was evaluated at the laboratory scale. Process parameters were very similar to those found using tap water. Maximal ethanol production rate in the fully-recycled stillage was 0.9g/L/h, which was similar to the 0.9g/L/h found with the tap water control. The consumption of fresh water was reduced from 4.1L/L (fresh water/ethanol) to zero. Compared with anaerobically-aerobically digested stillage which had not been treated with resin, the fermentation time was reduced by 28% (from 72h to 52h) and reached the level achieved with tap water. This novel process can assist in sustainable development of the ethanol industry.

Efficient hydrolysis and ethanol production from rice straw by pretreatment with organic acids and effluent of biogas plant

Effects of biogas effluent and its organic ingredients, i.e., acetic, butyric, lactic, and propionic acid, for the pretreatment of rice straw on enzymatic hydrolysis and ethanol production was studied.
