Chemical principles underpinning the performance of the metal-organic framework HKUST-1

Superior and efficient performance of cost-effective MIP-202 catalyst over UiO-66-(CO2H)2 in epoxide ring opening reactions

This study explored the catalytic performance of two robust zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), MIP-202(Zr) and UiO-66-(CO2H)2 in the ring-opening of epoxides using alcohols and amines as nucleophilic reagents. The MOFs were characterized by techniques such as FT-IR, PXRD, FE-SEM, and EDX. Through systematic optimization of key parameters (catalyst amount, time, temperature, solvent), MIP-202(Zr) achieved 99% styrene oxide conversion in 25 min with methanol at room temperature using 5 mg catalyst. In contrast, UiO-66-(CO2H)2 required drastically harsher conditions of 120 min, 60 °C, and four times the catalyst loading to reach 98% conversion. A similar trend was observed for ring-opening with aniline -MIP-202(Zr) gave 93% conversion in one hour at room temperature, while UiO-66-(CO2H)2 needed two hours at 60 °C for 95% conversion. The superior performance of MIP-202(Zr) likely stems from cooperative Brønsted/Lewis acid sites and higher proton conductivity enabling more efficient epoxide activation. Remarkably, MIP-202(Zr) maintained consistent activity over five recycles in the ring-opening of styrene oxide by methanol and over three recycles in the ring-opening of styrene oxide by aniline. Testing various epoxide substrates and nucleophiles revealed trends in reactivity governed by electronic and steric effects. The results provide useful insights into tuning Zr-MOF-based catalysts and highlight the promise of the cost-effective and sustainable MIP-202(Zr) for diverse epoxide ring-opening reactions on an industrial scale.

Understanding Cu(i) local environments in MOFs via63/65Cu NMR spectroscopy

The field of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) includes a vast number of hybrid organic and inorganic porous materials with wide-ranging applications. In particular, the Cu(i) ion exhibits rich coordination chemistry in MOFs and can exist in two-, three-, and four-coordinate environments, which gives rise to many structural motifs and potential applications. Direct characterization of the structurally and chemically important Cu(i) local environments is essential for understanding the sources of specific MOF properties. For the first time, 63/65Cu solid-state NMR has been used to investigate a variety of Cu(i) sites and local coordination geometries in Cu MOFs. This approach is a sensitive probe of the local Cu environment, particularly when combined with density functional theory calculations. A wide range of structurally-dependent 63/65Cu NMR parameters have been observed, including 65Cu quadrupolar coupling constants ranging from 18.8 to 74.8 MHz. Using the data from this and prior studies, a correlation between Cu quadrupolar coupling constants, Cu coordination number, and local Cu coordination geometry has been established. Links between DFT-calculated and experimental Cu NMR parameters are also presented. Several case studies illustrate the feasibility of 63/65Cu NMR for investigating and resolving inequivalent Cu sites, monitoring MOF phase changes, interrogating the Cu oxidation number, and characterizing the product of a MOF chemical reaction involving Cu(ii) reduction to Cu(i). A convenient avenue to acquire accurate 65Cu NMR spectra and NMR parameters from Cu(i) MOFs at a widely accessible magnetic field of 9.4 T is described, with a demonstrated practical application for tracking Cu(i) coordination evolution during MOF anion exchange. This work showcases the power of 63/65Cu solid-state NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations for molecular-level characterization of Cu(i) centers in MOFs, along with the potential of this protocol for investigating a wide variety of MOF structural changes and processes important for practical applications. This approach has broad applications for examining Cu(i) centers in other weight-dilute systems.

Direct observation of tunable thermal conductance at solid/porous crystalline solid interfaces induced by water adsorbates

Improving interfacial thermal transport is crucial for heat dissipation in devices with interfaces, such as electronics, buildings, and solar panels. Here, we design a strategy by utilizing the water adsorption-desorption process in porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to tune the interfacial heat transfer, which could benefit their potential in cooling or heat dissipation applications. We observe a changeable thermal conductance across the solid/porous MOF interfaces owing to the dense water channel formed by the adsorbed water molecules in MOFs. Our experimental and/or modeling results show that the interfacial thermal conductance of Au/Cu3(BTC)2, Au/Zr6O4(OH)4(BDC)6 and Au/MOF-505 heterointerfaces is increased up to 7.1, 1.7 and 3.1 folds by this strategy, respectively, where Cu3(BTC)2 is referred to as HKUST-1 and Zr6O4(OH)4(BDC)6 is referred to as UiO-66. Our molecular dynamics simulations further show that the surface tension of Au layer will cause the adsorbed water molecules in MOFs to gather at the interfacial region. The dense water channel formed at the interfacial region can activate the high-frequency lattice vibrations and act as an additional thermal pathway, and then enhance heat transfer across the interfaces significantly. Our findings revealed the underlying mechanisms for tailoring thermal transport at the solid/porous MOF heterointerfaces by water adsorbates, which could motivate and benefit the new cooling system design based on MOFs.

Predicting Spin-Dependent Phonon Band Structures of HKUST-1 Using Density Functional Theory and Machine-Learned Interatomic Potentials

The present study focuses on the spin-dependent vibrational properties of HKUST-1, a metal-organic framework with potential applications in gas storage and separation. Employing density functional theory (DFT), we explore the consequences of spin couplings in the copper paddle wheels (as the secondary building units of HKUST-1) on the material's vibrational properties. By systematically screening the impact of the spin state on the phonon bands and densities of states in the various frequency regions, we identify asymmetric -COO- stretching vibrations as being most affected by different types of magnetic couplings. Notably, we also show that the DFT-derived insights can be quantitatively reproduced employing suitably parametrized, state-of-the-art machine-learned classical potentials with root-mean-square deviations from the DFT results between 3 cm-1 and 7 cm-1. This demonstrates the potential of machine-learned classical force fields for predicting the spin-dependent properties of complex materials, even when explicitly considering spins only for the generation of the reference data used in the force-field parametrization process.

Hetero-bimetallic paddlewheel complexes for enhanced CO2 reduction selectivity in MOFs: a first principles study

The reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added feedstock materials, fine chemicals, and fuels represents a crucial approach for meeting contemporary chemical demands while reducing dependence on petrochemical sources. Optimizing catalysts for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) can entail employing first principles methodology to identify catalysts possessing desirable attributes, including the ability to form diverse products or selectively produce a limited set of products, or exhibit favorable reaction kinetics. In this study, we investigate CO2RR on bimetallic Cu-based paddlewheel complexes, aiming to understand the impact metal substitution with Mn(II), Co(II), or Ni(II) has on bimetallic paddlewheel metal-organic frameworks. Substituting one of the Cu sites of the paddlewheel complex with Mn results in a more catalytically active Cu center, poised to produce substantial quantities of formic acid (HCOOH) and smaller quantities of methane (CH4) with a suppressed production of C2 products such as ethanol (CH3CH2OH) or ethylene (C2H4). Moreover, the presence of Mn significantly reduces the limiting potential for CO2 reduction from 2.22 eV on the homo-bimetallic Cu paddlewheel complex to 1.19 eV, thereby necessitating a smaller applied potential. Conversely, within the Co-substituted paddlewheel complex, the Co site emerges as the primary catalytic center, selectively yielding CH4 as the sole reduced CO2 product, with a limiting potential of 1.22 eV. Notably, the Co site faces significant competition from H2 production due to a lower limiting potential of 0.81 eV for hydrogen reduction. Our examination of the Cu-Ni paddlewheel complex, featuring a Ni substituent site, reveals two catalytically active centers, each promoting distinct reductive processes. Both the Ni and Cu sites exhibit a propensity for HCOOH formation, with the Ni site favoring further reduction to CH4, whereas the Cu site directs the reaction towards methanol (CH3OH) production. This study holds significance in informing and streamlining future experimental efforts for synthesizing and evaluating novel catalysts with superior capabilities for CO2 reduction.

Computational design of metal hydrides on a defective metal-organic framework HKUST-1 for ethylene dimerization

Catalytic ethylene dimerization to 1-butene is a crucial reaction in the chemical industry, as 1-butene is used for the production of most common plastics (e.g., polyethylene). With well-defined tuneable structures and unsaturated active sites, defective metal-organic frameworks have recently emerged as potential catalysts for ethylene dimerization. Herein, we computationally design a series of metal hydrides on defective HKUST-1 namely H-M-DHKUST-1 (M: Co, Ni, Cu, Ru, Rh and Pd), and subsequently assess their catalytic activity for ethylene dimerization by density functional theory calculations. Due to the antiferromagnetic behavior of dimeric metal-based clusters, we comprehensively investigate all possible multiplicity states on H-M-DHKUST-1 and observe multiplicity crossing. The ground-state reaction barriers for four elementary steps (initiation, C-C coupling, β-hydride elimination and 1-butene desorption) are rationalized and C-C coupling is revealed to be the rate-determining step on H-Co-, H-Ni-, H-Ru-, H-Rh- and H-Pd-DHKUST-1. The energy barrier for β-hydride elimination is found to be the lowest on H-Ru- and H-Rh-DHKUST-1, attributed to the weak stability of agostic arrangement; however, the energy barrier for 1-butene desorption is the highest on H-Rh-DHKUST-1. Among the designed H-M-DHKUST-1, Co- and Ni-based ones are predicted to exhibit the best overall catalytic performance. The mechanistic insights from this study may facilitate the development of new MOFs toward efficient ethylene dimerization and other industrially important reactions.

An all-glass based micro gas chromatographic column for light hydrocarbon separation with HKUST-1 as stationary phase

BACKGROUND

The gas chromatography column is one of the key components of the gas chromatograph and typically be miniaturized using micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) technology. Due to the limited area of the Si wafer, the column length of micro gas chromatographic column (μGCC) is usually much smaller than that of commercial chromatographic columns. Therefore, it is always difficult to use μGCCs to separate small molecule gas components such as light hydrocarbons. More importantly, the heterogeneous microchannel surface formed by silicon glass bonding causes uneven stationary phase coating, further preventing the improvement of separation performance.

RESULTS

In this paper, a novel all-glass based μGCC with 2 m length for the separation of light hydrocarbons is proposed. The microchannels of the μGCC were directly prepared in the glass substrate by ultrafast laser assisted chemical etching (ULAE). The all-glass microchannels make the coating of the hydrophilic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) stationary phase continuously because of the homogeneous material composition. Therefore, a widely used copper based hydrophilic MOFs HKUST-1 was used as stationary phase for coating and testing. The test results show that the μGCC which is an open tubular column can realize the baseline separation of light hydrocarbons at 100 °C. And the resolution of difficult separated compounds, methane and ethane, can reach 12.98, which is 201.86 % higher than the silica-based monolithic capillary column in the relevant research. The resolution of ethane and ethylene reaches 6.81 at 120 °C.

SIGNIFICANCE

The μGCC fabricated by ULAE method is composed of all-glass and has the uniform stationary phase coating because of the homogeneous microchannel surface which greatly improve the separation performance, resulting in a large resolution for methane and ethane. The all-glass μGCC has broad application prospects in light hydrocarbon separation.

Plastic Avalanches in Metal-Organic Framework Crystals Due to the Dynamic Phase Mixing

The compressive properties of metal-organic framework (MOF) crystals are not only crucial for their densification process but also key in determining their performance in many applications. We herein investigated the mechanical responses of a classic crystalline MOF, HKUST-1, using in situ compression tests. A serrated flow accompanied by the unique strain avalanches was found in individual and contacting crystals before their final flattening or fracture with splitting cracks. The plastic flow with serrations is ascribed to the dynamic phase mixing due to the progressive and irreversible local phase transition in HKUST-1 crystals, as revealed by molecular dynamics and finite element simulations. Such pressure-induced phase coexistence in HKUST-1 crystals also induces a significant loading-history dependence of their Young's modulus. The observation of plastic avalanches in HKUST-1 crystals here not only expands our current understanding of the plasticity of MOF crystals but also unveils a novel mechanism for the avalanches and plastic flow in crystal plasticity.

Intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism in a two-dimensional semiconducting metal-organic framework

The development of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic semiconductors with room-temperature ferromagnetism is a significant challenge in materials science and is important for the development of next-generation spintronic devices. Herein, we demonstrate that a 2D semiconducting antiferromagnetic Cu-MOF can be endowed with intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetic coupling using a ligand cleavage strategy to regulate the inner magnetic interaction within the Cu dimers. Using the element-selective X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) technique, we provide unambiguous evidence for intrinsic ferromagnetism. Exhaustive structural characterizations confirm that the change of magnetic coupling is caused by the increased distance between Cu atoms within a Cu dimer. Theoretical calculations reveal that the ferromagnetic coupling is enhanced with the increased Cu-Cu distance, which depresses the hybridization between 3d orbitals of nearest Cu atoms. Our work provides an effective avenue to design and fabricate MOF-based semiconducting room-temperature ferromagnetic materials and promotes their practical applications in next-generation spintronic devices.

Facile adsorption of organophosphate pesticides over HKUST-1 MOFs

The recovery of organophosphate pesticides (OPPs) from aqueous solutions is imperative considering their agricultural and environmental implications. Among various mitigation approaches used for OPPs' removal, adsorption offers many advantageous features for OPPs abatement owing to its benign nature, cost-effective processing, and non-requirement of excessive equipment. This research describes the adsorptive removal of three organophosphate pesticides (OPPs) namely chlorpyrifos (CPF), methyl parathion (MP), and malathion (MAL) by HKUST-1 (HKUST = Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) metal-organic framework (MOF). The synthesis of HKUST-1 MOFs was confirmed by various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. The adsorption kinetics was systematically investigated by varying three parameters to include solution pH, contact time, and initial pesticide concentration. Among all the three pesticides, HKUST-1 showed enhanced removal of CPF in terms of pH, resulting in an adsorption capacity of 1.82 mg·g-1. However, under the effect of contact time at 60 min, the adsorption capacity of HKUST-1 for PM, MAL, and CPF were computed to be 1.83, 1.79, and 0.44 mg·g-1, respectively. Besides, HKUST-1 showed a remarkable performance towards adsorptive removal of MAL (14.01 mg·g-1 at 10 mg·L-1 concentration) with linear increase in adsorption capacity as the function of initial pesticide concentration. The MOFs were also able to retain ca. 50% of their adsorption efficiency over the course of five cycles of adsorptive removal of CP. In the future, a comprehensive data table showing the performance of various MOFs against various OPPs can be constructed on the basis of parameters used in this study.

Zn(II)-Based Mixed-Ligand-Bearing Coordination Polymers as Multi-Responsive Fluorescent Sensors for Detecting Dichromate, Iodide, Nitenpyram, and Imidacloprid

Coordination polymers (CPs) are organo-inorganic porous materials consisting of metal ions or clusters and organic linkers. These compounds have attracted attention for use in the fluorescence detection of pollutants. Here, two Zn-based mixed-ligand-bearing CPs, [Zn₂(DIN)₂(HBTC^2-)₂] (CP-1) and [Zn(DIN)(HBTC^2-)]·ACN·H₂O (CP-2) (DIN = 1,4-di(imidazole-1-yl)naphthalene, H₃BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid, and ACN = acetonitrile), were synthesized under solvothermal conditions. CP-1 and CP-2 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. Solid-state fluorescence analysis revealed an emission peak at 350 nm upon excitation at 225 and 290 nm. Fluorescence sensing tests showed that CP-1 was highly efficient, sensitive, and selective for detecting Cr₂O₇^2- at 225 and 290 nm, whereas I^- was only detected well at an excitation of 225 nm. CP-1 detected pesticides differently at excitation wavelengths of 225 and 290 nm; the highest quenching rates were for nitenpyram at 225 nm and imidacloprid at 290 nm. The quenching process may occur via the inner filter effect and fluorescence resonance energy transfer.

Enhanced Gas Adsorption on Cu3(BTC)2 Metal-Organic Framework by Post-Synthetic Cation Exchange and Computational Analysis

Increased gas adsorption in a series of post-synthetically modified metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of the type HKUST-1 was achieved by the partial cation exchange process. Manipulation of post-synthetic conditions demonstrates high tunability in the site substitution and gas adsorption properties during the dynamic equilibrium process. In this work, post-synthetic modification of Cu₃(BTC)₂ is carried on by exposure to TM²⁺ solutions (TM = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) at different time intervals. The crystal structure, composition, and morphology were studied by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Structural analysis supports the retention of the crystal structure and partial substitution of the Cu metal nodes within the framework. A linear increase in the transmetalation process is observed with Fe and Co with a maximum percentage of 39 and 18%, respectively. Conversely, relatively low cation exchange is observed with Mn having a maximum percentage of 2.40% and Ni with only 2.02%. Gas adsorption measurements and surface area analysis were determined for each species. Interestingly, (Cu/Mn)₃(BTC)₂ revealed the highest CO₂ adsorption capacity of 5.47 mmol/g, compared to 3.08 mmol/g for Cu₃(BTC)₂. The overall increased gas adsorption can be attributed to the formation of defects in the crystal structure during the cation exchange process. These results demonstrate the outstanding potential of post-synthetic ion exchange as a general approach to fine-tuning the physical properties of existing MOF architectures.

Ligand field tuning of d-orbital energies in metal-organic framework clusters

Linker functionalization is a common route used to affect the electronic and catalytic properties of metal-organic frameworks. By either pre- or post-synthetically installing linkages with differing linker moieties the band gap, workfunction, and exciton lifetimes have been shown to be affected. One overlooked aspect of linker functionalization, however, has been the impact on the metal d-orbital energies to which they are bound. The ligand field differences should result in substantial changes in d-splitting. In this study we use density functional theory (DFT) to study the energetics of d-orbital energy tuning as a function of linker chemistry. We offer a general descriptor, linker pK_a, as a tool to predict resultant band energies in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Our calculations reveal that simple functionalizations can affect the band energies, of primarily metal d lineage, by up to 2 eV and illustrate the significance of this band modularity using four archetypal MOFs: UiO-66, MIL-125, ZIF-8, and MOF-5. Together, we show that linker functionalization dramatically affects d-energies in MOF clusters and highlight that linker functionalization is a useful route for fine-tuning band edges centered on the metals, rather than linkers themselves.

Photo-induced reversible nitric oxide capture by Fe-M(CO2H)4 (M = Co, Ni, Cu) as a building block of mixed-metal BTC-based MOFs

Metal-organic frameworks incorporating mixed-metal sites (MM-MOFs) have emerged as promising candidates in the development of sensing platforms for the detection of paramagnetic species. In this context, the present study explores the photo-induced switching behavior of mixed-metal Fe-M (M = Co, Ni, Cu) formate (Fe-M(CO₂H)₄), as an experimentally feasible strategy for the reversible capture of nitric oxide (NO). Using Fe-M(CO₂H)₄ as a building block of synthesized MOFs based on BTC (benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid), molecular simulations of NO adsorption on Fe-M(CO₂H)₄ were conducted to provide a template for evaluating the behavior of BTC-based MOFs towards NO. Accordingly, the relationship between the magnetic properties and adsorption behaviors of Fe-M(CO₂H)₄ towards NO gas molecules was evaluated before and after photoexcitation. We show that the photo-induced effect on the magnetic properties of Fe-M(CO₂H)₄ changes the interaction strength between NO and the Fe-M(CO₂H)₄ systems. NO chemisorption over Fe-Ni(CO₂H)₄ indicates that nickel-doped Fe-BTC MOFs can be efficiently applied for capturing purposes. Moreover, our calculations show a switching behavior between physisorption and chemisorption of the NO molecules over Fe-Co(CO₂H)₄, occurring through magnetic modulation under UV-Vis irradiation. As far as we know, this is the first study that proposes light-controlled reversible NO capture using MOFs. The present study provides a promising platform for reversible NO capture using MM-MOF-incorporated BTC building blocks.

Fast Charge Transfer and High Stability via Hybridization of Hygroscopic Cu-BTC Metal-Organic Framework Nanocrystals with a Light-Absorbing Layer for Perovskite Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have great potential as an efficient solar energy harvesting system due to their outstanding optoelectronic properties, but the charge accumulation and recombination, as well as the moisture-induced degradation of the light-absorbing perovskite layers, remain great bottlenecks in practical applications for future technology. As a solution to this challenge, here we report a strategy to realize moisture-stable PSCs allowing fast charge transfer that, in turn, leads to high power conversion efficiency (PCE). Hybridization of hygroscopic copper(II) benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate metal-organic frameworks (Cu-BTC MOFs) with a light-absorbing perovskite layer for PSCs, where a moderate level of moisture attracted by Cu-BTC MOFs during the synthesis step, leads to enhanced perovskite crystallization. Besides, the perovskite-MOF hybrid facilitates the transfer of photoexcited electrons from the perovskite to TiO₂ by providing additional channels for electron extraction. This enables a high PCE of 20.5% in a triple-cation perovskite-MOF device with negligible hysteresis compared to reference devices. Moreover, the perovskite-MOF hybrid exhibits high stability in ambient air under dark conditions over a long period (up to 22 months), while the unmodified counterpart quickly decomposes into PbI₂. Consequently, this work provides a promising clue to realizeing fast charge transfer and high stability for high-performance PSCs.

Acetylenedicarboxylate as a linker in the engineering of coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks: challenges and potential

Despite its simplicity as a short and rod-like linear linker, acetylenedicarboxylate (ADC) has for a long time been somewhat overlooked in the engineering of coordination polymers (CPs) and especially in the construction of porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). This situation seems to be stemming from the thermosensitivity of the free acid (H₂ADC) precursor and its dicarboxylate, which makes the synthesis of their CP- and MOF-derivatives, as well as the evacuation of guest molecules from their pores, challenging. However, an increasing number of publications dealing with the synthesis, structural characterization and properties of ADC-based CPs and MOFs, disclose ways to tackle this obstacle. In this regard, using mostly room temperature solution synthesis or mechanochemical synthesis, and very rarely solvothermal synthesis, the ADC linker has successfully been used to form one-, two-, and three-dimensional CPs with metal cations from almost all groups of the periodic table of the elements, whereby its carboxylate groups adopt mainly all types of known coordination modes. ADC-based CPs feature properties, including negative thermal expansion, formation of non-centrosymmetric networks, long-range magnetic ordering, and solid-state polymerization. The first ADC-based microporous MOFs were obtained with Ce(IV), Hf(IV) and Zr(IV), in which the presence of the -CC- triple-bond within their backbone results in high hydrophilicity, high CO₂ adsorption capacity and enthalpy, as well as the uptake of halogen vapors. This discloses the potential of ADC-MOFs for gas storage/separation and water adsorption-based applications. Furthermore, H₂ADC/ADC was discovered to undergo facile in situ hydrohalogenation to yield halogen-functionalized fumarate-based CPs/MOFs. This review surveys investigations on ADC-based coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks, and is intended to stimulate interest on this linker in chemists working in the fields of crystal chemistry or materials science.

Synthesis of various dimensional metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and their hybrid composites for emerging applications - A review

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) represent the organic and inorganic hybrid porous materials. MOFs are low dense and highly porous materials which in turn provide large surface area that can accumulate and store numerous molecules within the pores. The pore size may also act as a mesh to separate molecules. The porous nature of MOFs is beneficial for altering the intrinsic properties of the materials. Over the past decade, different types of hybrid MOFs have been reported in combination with polymers, carbon materials, metal nanoparticles, metal oxides, and biomolecules for various applications. MOFs have also been used in the fabrication of electronic devices, sensors, energy storage, gas separation, supercapacitors, drug delivery and environmental clean-up. In this review, the unique structural orientation, exceptional properties and recent applications of MOFs have been discussed in the first section along with their porosity, stability and other influencing factors. In addition, various methods and techniques involved in the synthesis and designing of MOFs such as solvothermal, electrochemical, mechanochemical, ultrasonication and microwave methods are highlighted. In order to understand the scientific feasibility of MOFs in developing new products, various strategies have been applied to obtain different dimensional MOFs (0D, 1D, 2D and 3D) and their composite materials are also been conferred. Finally, the future prospects of MOFs, remaining challenges, research gaps and possible solutions that need to be addressed by advanced experimental design, computational models, simulation techniques and theoretical concepts have been deliberated.

Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopic Detection of Ethanol: A Side-by-Side Comparison of ZnO and HKUST-1 MOFs as Sensing Media

The most common gas sensors are based on chemically induced changes in electrical resistivity and necessarily involve making imperfect electrical contacts to the sensing materials, which introduce errors into the measurements. We leverage thermal- and chemical-induced changes in microwave propagation characteristics (i.e., S-parameters) to compare ZnO and surface-anchored metal–organic-framework (HKUST-1 MOF) thin films as sensing materials for detecting ethanol vapor, a typical volatile organic compound (VOC), at low temperatures. We show that the microwave propagation technique can detect ethanol at relatively low temperatures (<100 °C), and afford new mechanistic insights that are inaccessible with the traditional dc-resistance-based measurements. In addition, the metrological technique avoids the inimical measurand distortions due to parasitic electrical effects inherent in the conductometric volatile organic compound detection.

Removal of gaseous benzene by a fixed-bed system packed with a highly porous metal-organic framework (MOF-199) coated glass beads

The utility of nanomaterial adsorbents is often limited by their physical features, especially fine particle size. For example, a large bed-pressure drop is accompnied inevitably, if fine-particle sorbents are used in a packed bed system. To learn more about the effect of adsorbent morphology on uptake performance, we examined the adsorption efficiency of metal-organic framework 199 (MOF-199) in the pristine (fine powder) form and after its binding on to glass beads as an inert support. Most importantly, we investigated the effect of such coatings on adsorption of gaseous benzene (0.1-10 Pa) in a dry N₂ stream, particularly as a function of the amount of MOF-199 loaded on glass beads (MOF-199@GB) (i.e., 0,% 1%, 3%, 10%, and 20%, w/w) at near-ambient conditions (298 K and 1 atm). A 1% MOF-199 load gave optimal performance against a 0.1 Pa benzene vapor stream in 1 atm of N₂, with a two-to five-fold improvement (e.g., in terms of 10% breakthrough volume [BTV] (46 L atm [g.MOF-199)^-1], partition coefficient at 100% BTV (3 mol [kg.MOF-199]^-1 Pa^-1), and adsorption capacity at 100% BTV (20 mg [g.MOF-199]^-1 (areal capacity: 8.8 × 10^-7 mol m^-2) compared with those of 3%, 10%, and 20% loading. The relative performance of benzene adsorption was closely associated with the content of MOF-199@GB (e.g., 1% > 3% > 10% > 20%) and the surface availability (m² [g.MOF-199]^-1) such as 291 > 221 > 198 > 181, respectively. This study offers new insights into the strategies needed to expand the utility of finely powdered MOFs in various environmental applications.

Crystalline hydrogen bonding of water molecules confined in a metal-organic framework

Hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) of water molecules confined in nanopores is of particular interest because it is expected to exhibit chemical features different from bulk water molecules due to their interaction with the wall lining the pores. Herein, we show a crystalline behavior of H-bonded water molecules residing in the nanocages of a paddlewheel metal-organic framework, providing in situ and ex situ synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy studies. The crystalline H-bond is demonstrated by proving the vibrational chain connectivity arising between hydrogen bond and paddlewheel Cu-Cu bond in sequentially connected Cu-Cu·····coordinating H₂O·····H-bonded H₂O and by proving the spatial ordering of H-bonded water molecules at room temperature, where they are anticipated to be disordered. Additionally, we show a substantial distortion of the paddlewheel Cu²⁺-centers that arises with water coordination simultaneously. Also, we suggest the dynamic coordination bond character of the H-bond of the confined water, by which an H-bond transitions to a coordination-bond at the Cu²⁺-center instantaneously after dissociating a previously coordinated H₂O.

Hybridization from Guest-Host Interactions Reduces the Thermal Conductivity of Metal-Organic Frameworks

We experimentally and theoretically investigate the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of polycrystalline HKUST-1 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) infiltrated with three guest molecules: tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F₄-TCNQ), and (cyclohexane-1,4-diylidene)dimalononitrile (H₄-TCNQ). This allows for modification of the interaction strength between the guest and host, presenting an opportunity to study the fundamental atomic scale mechanisms of how guest molecules impact the thermal conductivity of large unit cell porous crystals. The thermal conductivities of the guest@MOF systems decrease significantly, by on average a factor of 4, for all infiltrated samples as compared to the uninfiltrated, pristine HKUST-1. This reduction in thermal conductivity goes in tandem with an increase in density of 38% and corresponding increase in heat capacity of ∼48%, defying conventional effective medium scaling of thermal properties of porous materials. We explore the origin of this reduction by experimentally investigating the guest molecules' effects on the mechanical properties of the MOF and performing atomistic simulations to elucidate the roles of the mass and bonding environments on thermal conductivity. The reduction in thermal conductivity can be ascribed to an increase in vibrational scattering introduced by extrinsic guest-MOF collisions as well as guest molecule-induced modifications to the intrinsic vibrational structure of the MOF in the form of hybridization of low frequency modes that is concomitant with an enhanced population of localized modes. The concentration of localized modes and resulting reduction in thermal conductivity do not seem to be significantly affected by the mass or bonding strength of the guest species.

Delta Chem: A New Geometric Approach of Porosity for Symmetric Porous Materials

Porous materials, such as zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and zeolitic-organic frameworks (ZIFs), are frequently considered for shape-selective separations, molecular storage, and catalysis applications, mainly due to their hollow structures. The amount and chemical nature of sorbate molecules that may (or may not) be fitted inside their cavities, and hence the bulk of their applications, depend on their internal structure, that is, on their surface areas, available volumes, and shapes of their porosities. However, experimentally, the access to such strucutral information is somewhat limited and computationally can be expensive to calculate for structures of more than 100 atoms. Moreover, the large number of known and hypothetical structures reported makes computational geometry-based techniques particularly attractive to identify the most suitable structures for a desired application. In this context, Delta Chem is both a method and a program designed to quickly analyze porous structures, relying solely on their Cartesian coordinates, and characterize the shapes of their cages using regular convex polyhedra. The program also provides a systematic approach to determine the positions of the centers of porosity and the atoms that contribute to form the internal surfaces of these materials, as well as other geometric features of the porosities such as volumes and surface areas. It also includes a routine to compute the irreducible volumes of the cages, i.e., minimal regions of the cavities that can be used to represent the hole porosity shape via symmetry operations. The capabilities of the program are tested on well-studied porous systems, namely, Buckminsterfullerene, MOF-5, HKUST-1, UiO-66, and ZIF-8. As highlighted through the fullerene, it can equally be used to characterize the cavities of hollow molecules. Our approach is compared against other widely used polyhedra-based approaches for porous materials. Our results show that Delta Chem is a novel and systematic way of characterizing routinely porous materials and hollow molecules. Besides potential applications to systematically simplify computational studies of shape-dependent properties, like shape-selective catalysis and adsorption, Delta Chem can be used in many studies to generate basic geometrical models.

Generating Catalytic Sites in UiO-66 through Defect Engineering

UiO-66 is regarded as an epitome of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) because of its stability. Defect engineering has been used as a toolbox to alter the performance of MOFs. UiO-66 is among the most widely explored MOFs because of its capability to bear a high number of defects without undergoing structural collapse. Several representative works in the field of MOF-based defect engineering are available based on UiO-66. In this review, more emphasis is given toward the construction of catalytic sites by engineering defects in UiO-66 as a representative including all the detailed synthesis procedures for inducing defects, and the characterization techniques used to analyze these defects in UiO-66 are discussed. Furthermore, a comprehensive review for the defects themselves and the support using defects in catalysis is provided to accentuate the importance of defect engineering.

Non-injective gas sensor arrays: identifying undetectable composition changes

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are nanoporous materials with good prospects as recognition elements for gas sensors owing to their adsorptive sensitivity and selectivity. A gravimetric, MOF-based sensor functions by measuring the mass of gas adsorbed in a MOF. Changes in the gas composition are expected to produce detectable changes in the mass of gas adsorbed in the MOF. In practical settings, multiple components of the gas adsorb into the MOF and contribute to the sensor response. As a result, there are typically many distinct gas compositions that produce the same single-sensor response. The response vector of a gas sensor array places multiple constraints on the gas composition. Still, if the number of degrees of freedom in the gas composition is greater than the number of MOFs in the sensor array, the map from gas compositions to response vectors will be non-injective (many-to-one). Here, we outline a mathematical method to determine undetectable changes in gas composition to which non-injective gas sensor arrays are unresponsive. This is important for understanding their limitations and vulnerabilities. We focus on gravimetric, MOF-based gas sensor arrays. Our method relies on a mixed-gas adsorption model in the MOFs comprising the sensor array, which gives the mass of gas adsorbed in each MOF as a function of the gas composition. The singular value decomposition of the Jacobian matrix of the adsorption model uncovers (i) the unresponsive directions and (ii) the responsive directions, ranked by sensitivity, in gas composition space. We illustrate the identification of unresponsive subspaces and ranked responsive directions for gas sensor arrays based on Co-MOF-74 and HKUST-1 aimed at quantitative sensing of CH₄/N₂/CO₂/C₂H₆mixtures relevant to natural gas sensing.

Metal-organic frameworks for chemical sensing devices

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are exceptionally large surface area materials with organized porous cages that have been investigated for nearly three decades. Due to the flexibility in their design and predisposition toward functionalization, they have shown promise in many areas of application, including chemical sensing. Consequently, they are identified as advanced materials with potential for deployment in analytical devices for chemical and biochemical sensing applications, where high sensitivity is desirable, for example, in environmental monitoring and to advance personal diagnostics. To keep abreast of new research, which signposts the future directions in the development of MOF-based chemical sensors, this review examines studies since 2015 that focus on the applications of MOF films and devices in chemical sensing. Various examples that use MOF films in solid-state sensing applications were drawn from recent studies based on electronic, electrochemical, electromechanical and optical sensing methods. These examples underscore the readiness of MOFs to be integrated in optical and electronic analytical devices. Also, preliminary demonstrations of future sensors are indicated in the performances of MOF-based wearables and smartphone sensors. This review will inspire collaborative efforts between scientists and engineers working within the field of MOFs, leading to greater innovations and accelerating the development of MOF-based analytical devices for chemical and biochemical sensing applications.

Metal-organic frameworks for diagnosis and therapy of infectious diseases

Infectious diseases are one of the leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), which are porous coordination materials composed of bridging organic ligands and metallic ions or clusters, exhibits great potential to be used against several pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. MOFs can show sustained release capability, high surface area, adjustable pore size and structural flexibility, which makes them good candidates for new therapeutic systems. This review provides a detailed summary of the biological application of MOFs, focussing on diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. MOFs have been reported for usage as antimicrobial agents, drug delivery systems, therapeutic composites, nanozymes and phototherapies. Furthermore, different MOF-based biosensors have also been developed to detect specific pathogens by electrochemical, fluorometric and colorimetric assays. Finally, we present limitations and perspectives in this field.

Modelling drug adsorption in metal-organic frameworks: the role of solvent

Solvent plays a key role in biological functions, catalysis, and drug delivery. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their tunable functionalities, porosities and surface areas have been recently used as drug delivery vehicles. To investigate the effect of solvent on drug adsorption in MOFs, we have performed integrated computational and experimental studies in selected biocompatible MOFs, specifically, UiO-AZB, HKUST-1 (or CuBTC) and NH2-MIL-53(Al). The adsorption of three drugs, namely, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), ibuprofen (IBU), and hydroxyurea (HU) were performed in the presence and absence of the ethanol. Our computational predictions, at 1 atmospheric pressure, showed a reasonable agreement with experimental studies performed in the presence of ethanol. We find that in the presence of ethanol the drug molecules were adsorbed at the interface of solvent and MOFs. Moreover, the computationally calculated adsorption isotherms suggested that the drug adsorption was driven by electrostatic interactions at lower pressures (<10-4 Pa). Our computational predictions in the absence of ethanol were higher compared to those in the presence of ethanol. The MOF-adsorbate interaction (U HA) energy decreased with decrease in the size of a drug molecule in all three MOFs at all simulated pressures. At high pressure the interaction energy increases with increase in the MOFs pore size as the number of molecules adsorbed increases. Thus, our research shows the important role played by solvent in drug adsorption and suggests that it is critical to consider solvent while performing computational studies.

Heterometallic Actinide-Containing Photoresponsive Metal-Organic Frameworks: Dynamic and Static Tuning of Electronic Properties

Acquiring fundamental knowledge of properties of actinide-based materials is a necessary step to create new possibilities for addressing the current challenges in the nuclear energy and nuclear waste sectors. In this report, we established a photophysics-electronics correlation for actinide-containing metal-organic frameworks (An-MOFs) as a function of excitation wavelength, for the first time. A stepwise approach for dynamically modulating electronic properties was applied for the first time towards actinide-based heterometallic MOFs through integration of photochromic linkers. Optical cycling, modeling of density of states near the Fermi edge, conductivity measurements, and photoisomerization kinetics were employed to shed light on the process of tailoring optoelectronic properties of An-MOFs. Furthermore, the first photochromic MOF-based field-effect transistor, in which the field-effect response could be changed through light exposure, was constructed. As a demonstration, the change in current upon light exposure was sufficient to operate a two-LED fail-safe indicator circuit.

porE: A code for deterministic and systematic analyses of porosities

Accurate numerical calculations of porosities and related properties are of importance when analyzing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). We present porE, an open-source, general-purpose implementation to compute such properties and discuss all results regarding their sensitivity to numerical parameters. Our code combines the numerical efficiency of Fortran with the user-friendliness of Python. Three different approaches to calculate porosities are implemented in porE, and their advantages and drawbacks are discussed. In contrast to commonly used implementations, our approaches are entirely deterministic and do not require any stochastic averaging. In addition to the calculation of porosities, porE can calculate pore size distributions and offers the possibility to analyze pore windows. The underlying approaches are outlined, and pore windows are discussed concerning their impact on the analyzed porosities. Comparisons with reference values aim for a clear differentiation between void and accessible porosities, which we provide for a small benchmark set consisting of eight MOFs. In addition, our approaches are used for a bigger benchmark set containing 370 MOFs, where we determine linear relationships within our approaches as well as to reference values. We show how these relationships can be used to derive corrections to a give porosity approach, minimizing its mean error. As a highlight we show how complex workflows can be designed with a few lines of Python code using porE.

Conductive, Large-Area, and Continuous 7,7,8,8-Tetracyanoquinodimethane@HKUST-1 Thin Films Fabricated Using Solution Shearing

Most metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have an insulating nature due to their porosity and redox-inactive organic components. The electrical conductivity of the prototypical MOF, HKUST-1, can be tuned by infiltrating a small-molecule organic semiconductor, 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), into the HKUST-1 pores, creating TCNQ@HKUST-1. However, current processes of creating TCNQ@HKUST-1 films have many roadblocks such as slow crystallization rates, which limit high throughput production, and the formation of Cu(TCNQ) as a byproduct, which affects the electrical conductivity and degrades the chemical structure of HKUST-1. In this work, we show that HKUST-1 films can be rapidly synthesized over large areas with consistent thickness and no pinholes via a meniscus-guided coating technique called solution shearing. The subsequent pore activation process and TCNQ impregnation can be completed via solvent exchange to minimize the formation of the Cu(TCNQ) byproduct, and we obtain an increase in electrical conductivity of the solution-sheared TCNQ@HKUST-1 thin films of over 7 orders of magnitude, reaching a maximum value of 2.42 × 10^-2 S m^-1 when TCNQ is incorporated for 10 days. The conductivity of solution-sheared TCNQ@HKUST-1 is higher compared to films formed by high-pressure pelletization of TCNQ@HKUST-1. We show that solution shearing can produce large-area thin films rapidly and reduce the formation of grain boundaries better than pelletization, allowing for large-area electronics with both charge transport and porosity for applications as sensors and electronics.

Electric Field-Controlled Synthesis and Characterisation of Single Metal-Organic-Framework (MOF) Nanoparticles

Achieving control over the size distribution of metal-organic-framework (MOF) nanoparticles is key to biomedical applications and seeding techniques. Electrochemical control over the nanoparticle synthesis of the MOF, HKUST-1, is achieved using a nanopipette injection method to locally mix Cu²⁺ salt precursor and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (BTC^3- ) ligand reagents, to form MOF nanocrystals, and collect and characterise them on a TEM grid. In situ analysis of the size and translocation frequency of HKUST-1 nanoparticles is demonstrated, using the nanopipette to detect resistive pulses as nanoparticles form. Complementary modelling of mass transport in the electric field, enables particle size to be estimated and explains the feasibility of particular reaction conditions, including inhibitory effects of excess BTC^3- . These new methods should be applicable to a variety of MOFs, and scaling up synthesis possible via arrays of nanoscale reaction centres, for example using nanopore membranes.

Synergistic photoredox and copper catalysis by diode-like coordination polymer with twisted and polar copper-dye conjugation

Synergistic photoredox and copper catalysis confers new synthetic possibilities in the pharmaceutical field, but is seriously affected by the consumptive fluorescence quenching of Cu(II). By decorating bulky auxiliaries into a photoreductive triphenylamine-based ligand to twist the conjugation between the triphenylamine-based ligand and the polar Cu(II)–carboxylate node in the coordination polymer, we report a heterogeneous approach to directly confront this inherent problem. The twisted and polar Cu(II)–dye conjunction endows the coordination polymer with diode-like photoelectronic behaviours, which hampers the inter- and intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer from the triphenylamine-moiety to the Cu(II) site and permits reversed-directional ground-state electronic conductivity, rectifying the productive loop circuit for synergising photoredox and copper catalysis in pharmaceutically valuable decarboxylative C(sp³)–heteroatom couplings. The well-retained Cu(II) sites during photoirradiation exhibit unique inner-spheric modulation effects, which endow the couplings with adaptability to different types of nucleophiles and radical precursors under concise reaction conditions, and distinguish the multi-olefinic moieties of biointeresting steride derivatives in their late-stage trifluoromethylation-chloration difunctionalisation.

Synergistic photoredox–copper catalysis is limited by fluorescence quenching of Cu(II) ions to photoreductive dyes in solution. Here, the authors compromise photoreduction and Cu(II) catalysis by diode-like coordination polymer with twisted Cu(II)–dye conjugation, revealing its vast application vistas.

Direct Identification of Mixed-Metal Centers in Metal-Organic Frameworks: Cu3(BTC)2 Transmetalated with Rh2+ Ions

Raman spectroscopy was used to establish direct evidence of heterometallic metal centers in a metal-organic framework (MOF). The Cu₃(BTC)₂ MOF HKUST-1 (BTC^3- = benzenetricarboxylate) was transmetalated by heating it in a solution of RhCl₃ to substitute Rh²⁺ ions for Cu²⁺ ions in the dinuclear paddlewheel nodes of the framework. In addition to the Cu-Cu and Rh-Rh stretching modes, Raman spectra of (Cu_xRh_1-x)₃(BTC)₂ show the Cu-Rh stretching mode, indicating that mixed-metal Cu-Rh nodes are formed after transmetalation. Density functional theory studies confirmed the assignment of a Raman peak at 285 cm^-1 to the Cu-Rh stretching vibration. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy experiments further supported the conclusion that Rh²⁺ ions are substituted into the paddlewheel nodes of Cu₃(BTC)₂ to form an isostructural heterometallic MOF, and electron microscopy studies showed that Rh and Cu are homogeneously distributed in (Cu_xRh_1-x)₃(BTC)₂ on the nanoscale.

Emergent Interface in Heterostructured Thin Films of Cu(II) and Cu(I) Coordination Polymers

In this work we report fabrication of high-quality AB- and BA-type heterostructured thin films of cubic Cu(II) (A-type) and tetragonal Cu(I) (B-type) coordination polymers (CPs) on the functionalized Au substrate by the layer-by-layer method. Successful growth of Cu(I)-CP on top of Cu(II)-CP was assigned to be due to the interfacial reduction reaction (IRR). Notably, electrical transport measurements across AB- and BA-type heterostructured thin films revealed rectification of current in opposite directions. We have attributed such an interestingly new observation to the formation of a well-defined interface of Cu(II)-CP and Cu(I)-CP resembling a p-n junction-a hitherto unreported phenomenon that is anticipated to open enormous opportunities for the heterostructured thin films of CPs, likewise celebrated interfaces of oxide heterostructures.

Electronic Structure Modeling of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Owing to their molecular building blocks, yet highly crystalline nature, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) sit at the interface between molecule and material. Their diverse structures and compositions enable them to be useful materials as catalysts in heterogeneous reactions, electrical conductors in energy storage and transfer applications, chromophores in photoenabled chemical transformations, and beyond. In all cases, density functional theory (DFT) and higher-level methods for electronic structure determination provide valuable quantitative information about the electronic properties that underpin the functions of these frameworks. However, there are only two general modeling approaches in conventional electronic structure software packages: those that treat materials as extended, periodic solids, and those that treat materials as discrete molecules. Each approach has features and benefits; both have been widely employed to understand the emergent chemistry that arises from the formation of the metal-organic interface. This Review canvases these approaches to date, with emphasis placed on the application of electronic structure theory to explore reactivity and electron transfer using periodic, molecular, and embedded models. This includes (i) computational chemistry considerations such as how functional, k-grid, and other model variables are selected to enable insights into MOF properties, (ii) extended solid models that treat MOFs as materials rather than molecules, (iii) the mechanics of cluster extraction and subsequent chemistry enabled by these molecular models, (iv) catalytic studies using both solids and clusters thereof, and (v) embedded, mixed-method approaches, which simulate a fraction of the material using one level of theory and the remainder of the material using another dissimilar theoretical implementation.

Scrutinizing the Pore Chemistry and the Importance of Cu(I) Defects in TCNQ-Loaded Cu3(BTC)2 by a Multitechnique Spectroscopic Approach

Host-guest interactions control the fundamental processes in porous materials for many applications such as gas storage and catalysis. The study of these processes, however, is not trivial, even if the material is crystalline. In particular, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a complex situation since guest molecules can interact with different parts of the organic linkers and the metal clusters and may alter the details of the pore structure and system properties. A prominent example is the so-called retrofitted MOF material TCNQ@Cu₃(BTC)₂ that has attracted a lot of attention due to its electronic properties induced by the host-guest interactions. Only recently, structural evidence has been presented for a bridging binding mode of TCNQ to two Cu paddlewheel units; however, many issues regarding the redox chemistry of Cu₃(BTC)₂ and TCNQ are currently unsolved. Herein, we report a powerful spectroscopic approach to study the host-guest chemistry of this material. Combining IR spectroscopy in the presence of CO and EPR spectroscopy, we found that the intrinsic Cu(I) defects of the host react with the guest, forming TCNQ radical anions. This chemistry has profound implications, in particular, with respect to the performance of TCNQ@Cu₃(BTC)₂ as an electronic conductor. A decreasing availability of open Cu(II) sites with increasing TCNQ loading proves the coordinative binding of TCNQ to the paddlewheel nodes, and a heterogeneous structure is formed with different TCNQ arrangements and pore environments at low TCNQ loadings. Finally, the combined use of spectroscopic characterization techniques has proven to be, in general, a powerful approach for studying the complex chemistry of host-guest materials.

Mechanochemical defect engineering of HKUST-1 and impact of the resulting defects on carbon dioxide sorption and catalytic cyclopropanation

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are recognized as ideal candidates for many applications such as gas sorption and catalysis. For a long time the properties of these materials were thought to essentially arise from their well-defined crystal structures. It is only recently that the importance of structural defects for the properties of MOFs has been evidenced. In this work, salt-assisted and liquid-assisted grinding were used to introduce defects in a copper-based MOF, namely HKUST-1. Different milling times and post-synthetic treatments with alcohols allow introduction of defects in the form of free carboxylic acid groups or reduced copper(i) sites. The nature and the amount of defects were evaluated by spectroscopic methods (FTIR, XPS) as well as TGA and NH₃ temperature-programmed desorption experiments. The negative impact of free –COOH groups on the catalytic cyclopropanation reaction of ethyl diazoacetate with styrene, as well as on the gravimetric CO₂ sorption capacities of the materials, was demonstrated. The improvement of the catalytic activity of carboxylic acid containing materials by the presence of Cu^I sites was also evidenced.

Defective HKUST-1 was prepared by salt- or liquid-assisted grinding with post-synthetic treatments with alcohols. The defects identified as free carboxylic acid groups or reduced Cu(i) sites influence strongly gas storage and catalytic properties.
