Palladium-Catalyzed Atroposelective Kinetic C-H Olefination and Allylation for the Synthesis of C-B Axial Chirality

The direct C-H functionalization of 1,2-benzazaborines, especially asymmetric version, remains a great challenge. Here we report a palladium-catalyzed enantioselective C-H olefination and allylation reactions of 1,2-benzazaborines. This asymmetric approach is a kinetic resolution (KR), providing various C-B axially chiral 2-aryl-1,2-benzazaborines and 3-substituted 2-aryl-1,2-benzazaborines in generally high yields with excellent enantioselectivities (selectivity (S) factor up to 354). The synthetic potential of this reaction is showcased by late-stage modification of complex molecules, scale-up reaction, and applications.

Synthetic Doping of Acenaphthylene through BN/CC Isosterism and a Direct Comparison with BN-Acenaphthene

Boron/nitrogen-doped acenaphthylenes, a new class of BN-doped cyclopenta-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, were synthesized via indole-directed C-H borylation. The reference molecule BN-acenaphthene was also synthesized in a similar manner. Both BN-acenaphthylene and BN-acenaphthene were unequivocally characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The aromaticities of each ring in BN-acenaphthylenes were quantified by experimental and theoretical methods. Moreover, doping the BN unit into acenaphthylene can increase the LUMO level and decrease the HOMO level, resulting in wider HOMO-LUMO energy gaps. Furthermore, regioselective bromination of BN-acenaphthylene (B-Mes) afforded monobrominated BN-acenaphthylene in good yield. Subsequently, cross-coupling of brominated BN-acenaphthylene gave a series of BN-acenaphthylene derivatives. In addition, the photophysical properties of these BN-acenaphthylene derivatives can be fine-tuned by the substituents on the BN-acenaphthylene scaffold.

The rapid construction of bis-BN dipyrrolyl[a,j]anthracenes and a direct comparison with a carbonaceous analogue

A series of bis-BN dipyrrolyl[a,j]anthracenes and a representative carbonaceous analogue have been synthesized. We studied the optical properties and OLED applications of these BN-PAHs and compared them with the carbonaceous counterpart.

1,10a-Dihydro-1-aza-10a-boraphenanthrene and 6a,7-Dihydro-7-aza-6a-boratetraphene: Two New Fluorescent BN-PAHs

Previously unknown 1,10a-dihydro-1-aza-10a-boraphenanthrene and 6a,7-dihydro-7-aza-6a-boratetraphene have been efficiently synthesized. Bromination of these BN-PAHs proceeds with complete regioselectivity, resulting in the formation of different substituted derivatives via cross-coupling reactions. These compounds exhibit rather high fluorescence quantum yields (up to ϕ_F = 0.80).

BN-Embedded Perylenes

Transition metal catalyzed coupling reaction strategy has been utilized in the synthesis of two novel BN-perylenes starting from halogenated BN-naphthalene derivatives. The molecular structures and packing modes of BN-perylenes were confirmed by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray single-crystal diffraction experiments. Their photophysical properties were further investigated using UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and DFT calculations. Interestingly, the isosteric BN-insertion in perylene system resulted in stronger π-π stacking interaction both in solid and solution phases. The synthesized BN-perylenes are proved to be highly stable and thus provide a new valuable platform for novel organic materials applications which is otherwise inaccessible to date.

Modular Synthesis of Pentagonal and Hexagonal Ring-Fused NBN-Phenalenes Leading to an Excited-State Aromatization-Induced Structural Planarization Molecular Library

Although polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with a nitrogen-boron-nitrogen (NBN) moiety have recently attracted tremendous interest due to their intriguing electronic and optoelectronic properties, all of the NBN-fused π-systems reported to date are called NBN-dibenzophenalenes and were synthesized by electrophilic aromatic substitution. The synthesis of NBN-phenalenes remains challenging, and transition-metal catalysis has never been utilized to construct NBN-embedded π-scaffolds. Herein, a palladium-catalyzed cyclization/bicyclization strategy was developed for the synthesis of diverse pentagonal and hexagonal ring-fused NBN-phenalenes and half-NBN-phenalenes. All of the NBN-embedded π-scaffolds presented in our paper are fluorescent in both solution and the solid state. Further investigations showed that the five-membered NBN rings exhibit the properties of traditional luminogens, while those with a six-membered NBN ring generally undergo photoinduced structural planarization (PISP) and exhibit different colors and quantum yields of fluorescence with different concentrations in solution. Time-resolved spectroscopy and TD-DFT calculations revealed that excited-state aromatization is the driving force for PISP in hexagonal ring-fused NBN-π systems, leading to the formation of excimers. Notably, the scope of PISP compounds is still quite limited, and PISP has never been observed in NBN-π systems before. These hexagonal ring-fused NBN-π systems constitute a novel PISP molecular library and appear to be a new class of aggregation-induced excimer emission (AIEE) materials. Finally, the AIEE behavior of these six-membered NBN rings was applied to the detection of nitro explosives, achieving excellent sensitivity. In general, this work provides a new viewpoint for synthesizing NBN-fused π-systems and understanding the excited-state motion of luminogens.

Synthesis of bis-BN-Naphthalene-Fused Oxepins and Their Photoluminescence Including White-Light Emission

A series of novel bis-BN-naphthalene-fused oxepin derivatives were synthesized via a Pd-catalyzed tandem reaction from brominated 2,1-borazaronaphthalenes and cis-bis(boryl)alkenes. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that bis-BN-naphthalene-fused oxepins feature a planar framework. The electronic and photophysical properties of the novel BN-naphthalene-fused oxepins were investigated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which disclosed the distinct electronic and photophysical properties of the analogous hydrocarbon system. Interestingly, dual-fluorescent emissions were observed upon dissolving N-substituted derivatives 10-14 in dimethyl sulfoxide. Tunable emission colors especially for white-light emissions can be achieved by controlling the ratio of solvents, concentration, or temperature using only a single-molecule compound.

Rapid Construction of Fold-Line-Shaped BN-Embedded Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds through Diels-Alder Reaction

The Diels-Alder reaction strategy that can rapidly extend the conjugated backbone was applied to facilely synthesize fold-line, coplanar BN-embedded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from simple small BN compounds. The molecular structures and packing modes of these BN-embedded acenes were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Their electronic and photophysical properties were studied by using UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, electrochemical cyclic voltammetry, and density functional theory calculations. These results demonstrate the efficiency and feasibility of this synthetic strategy.

Regioselective Functionalization of Stable BN-Modified Luminescent Tetraphenes for High-Resolution Fingerprint Imaging

A series of novel BN tetraphene derivatives have been prepared successfully for the first time via a post-functionalization strategy. The optical and electronic properties of these derivatives could be tuned systematically by the incorporation of different substituents on the main skeleton. The functionalized BN-containing luminogens have been explored for the detection of latent fingerprints (LFPs) on different substrates, including glass, aluminum foil, plastic, and ironware. This strategy provides great versatility in LFP imaging and good potential in elucidating the chemical information within LFPs, making the strategy valuable in forensic investigations.

Remarkable effect of alkynyl substituents on the fluorescence properties of a BN-phenanthrene

A series of BN-phenanthrenes with substituents of a diverse nature have been synthesized by palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of a common chloro-substituted precursor, which was made from readily available materials in only four steps. Evaluation of the photophysical properties of the prepared compounds unveiled an impressive effect of the presence of alkynyl substituents on the fluorescence quantum yield, which improved from 0.01 in the parent compound to up to 0.65 in derivatives containing a triple bond.

Aromatic Metamorphosis of Indoles into 1,2-Benzazaborins

Among the plethora of aromatic compounds, indoles represent a privileged class of substructures that is ubiquitous in natural products and pharmaceuticals. While numerous exocyclic functionalizations of indoles have provided access to a variety of useful derivatives, endocyclic transformations involving the cleavage of the C2-N bond remain challenging due to the high aromaticity and strength of this bond in indoles. Herein, we report the "aromatic metamorphosis" of indoles into 1,2-benzazaborins via the insertion of boron into the C2-N bond. This endocyclic insertion consists of a reductive ring-opening using lithium metal and a subsequent trapping of the resulting dianionic species with organoboronic esters. Considering that 1,2-azaborins have attracted increasing academic and industrial attention as BN isosteres of benzene, the counterintuitive aromatic metamorphosis presented herein can feasibly be expected to substantially advance the promising chemistry of 1,2-azaborins.

Late-stage functionalization of BN-heterocycles

BN/CC isosterism has emerged as a viable strategy to expand the chemical space of organic molecules. In particular, the application of BN/CC isosterism to arenes has received significant attention due to the vast available chemical space provided by aromatic hydrocarbons. The synthetic efforts directed at assembling novel aromatic BN heterocycles have resulted in the discovery of new properties and functions in a variety of fields including biomedical research, medicinal chemistry, materials science, catalysis, and organic synthesis. This tutorial review specifically covers recent advances in synthetic technologies that functionalize assembled boron-nitrogen (BN) heterocycles and highlights their distinct reactivity and selectivity in comparison to their carbonaceous counterparts. It is intended to serve as a state-of-the-art compendium for readers who are interested in the reaction chemistry of BN heterocycles.

Inorganic Triphenylphosphine

A completely inorganic version of one of the most famous organophosphorus compounds, triphenylphosphine, has been prepared. A comparison of the crystal structures of inorganic triphenylphosphine, PBaz₃ (where Baz=B₃ H₂ N₃ H₃ ) and PPh₃ shows that they have superficial similarities and furthermore, the Lewis basicities of the two compounds are remarkably similar. However, their oxygenation and hydrolysis reactions are starkly different. PBaz₃ reacts quantitatively with water to give PH₃ and with the oxidizing agent ONMe₃ to give the triply-O-inserted product P(OBaz)₃ , an inorganic version of triphenyl phosphite; a corresponding transformation with PPh₃ is inconceivable. Thermodynamically, what drives these striking differences in the chemistry of PBaz₃ and PPh₃ is the great strength of the B-O bond.

C-H Functionalization of BN-Aromatics Promoted by Addition of Organolithium Compounds to the Boron Atom

Addition of an organolithium compound to a BN-phenanthrene with embedded B and N atoms is proposed to result in coordination of RLi to the boron atom. This coordination, supported by NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations, increases the nucleophilicity of the system in the β position to the N atom and is therefore a useful tool for promoting regioselective C-H functionalization of BN aromatics.

Divergent reactivity of nucleophilic 1-bora-7a-azaindenide anions

The reactions of 1-bora-7a-azaindenide anions, prepared in moderate to excellent yields by reduction of the appropriate 1-bora-7a-azaindenyl chlorides with KC₈ in THF, with alkyl halides and carbon dioxide were studied. With alkyl halides (CH₂Cl₂, CH₃I and BrCH(D)CH(D)^tBu), the anions behave as boron anions, alkylating the boron centre via a classic S_N2 mechanism. This was established with DFT methods and via experiments utilizing the neo-hexyl stereoprobe BrCH(D)CH(D)^tBu. These reactions were in part driven by a re-aromatization of the six membered pyridyl ring upon formation of the product. Conversely, in the reaction of the 1-bora-7a-azaindenide anions with CO₂, a novel carboxylation of the C-2 carbon alpha to boron was observed. Computations indicated that while carboxylation of the boron centre was kinetically feasible, the products of B-carboxylation were not thermodynamically favored relative to the observed C-2 carboxylated species, which were formed preferably due to the generation of both C-C and B-O bonds. In these products, the pyridyl ring remains non-aromatic, in part accounting for the observed reversibility of carboxylation.

Synthesis of functionalized helical BN-benzo[c]phenanthrenes

A novel parent BN-benzo[c]phenanthrene, with helical chirality and remarkable structural features, has been easily obtained in three steps with a global yield of 55%.

Synthesis, Optical Properties, and Regioselective Functionalization of 4a-Aza-10a-boraphenanthrene

4a-Aza-10a-boraphenanthrene has been synthesized in only four steps from commercially available materials with a remarkable overall yield of 62%. In contrast to other BN-isosteres of phenathrene, this isomer is weakly fluorescent, which has been explained by means of computational studies that found a low energy conical intersection for the nonradiative deactivation of the excited state. Moreover, a completely regioselective functionalization of 4a-aza-10a-boraphenanthrene at C-1 by reaction with activated electrophiles has been achieved.

The Least Stable Isomer of BN Naphthalene: Toward Predictive Trends for the Optoelectronic Properties of BN Acenes

The least stable isomer of the parental BN naphthalene series has been synthesized in a simple four-step sequence. Its experimental electronic structure characterization via UV-PES, cyclic voltammetry, and UV-vis spectroscopy in direct comparison with three other known BN naphthalene isomers has established two guiding principles for predicting the electronic structures of BN acene compounds: (1) Orientational BN isomers have similar HOMO-LUMO gaps. (2) For each pair of orientational BN isomers, the more thermodynamically stable compound has the lower HOMO energy. Furthermore, we demonstrate that BN/CC isosterism in the context of BN-9,1-Naph can impact crystal packing to favor a cofacial π-stack motif.

A Modular Synthetic Approach to Monocyclic 1,4-Azaborines

A simple and general method for the synthesis of a wide range of monocyclic 1,4-azaborines, including the first examples containing B heteroatoms is described. Post-heterocycle-formation olefin isomerization was employed as a key strategy. This new synthetic method provides fundamental insight into the resonance stabilization and photophysical properties of 1,4-azaborines.
