Evaluating Noncovalent Interactions in Halogenated Molecules with Double-Hybrid Functionals and a Dedicated Small Basis Set

We present here an extension of our recently developed PBE-QIDH/DH-SVPD basis set to halogen atoms, with the aim of obtaining, for weakly interacting halogenated molecules, interaction energies close to those provided by a large basis set (def2-TZVPP) coupled to empirical dispersion potential. The core of our approach is the split-valence basis set, DH-SVPD, that has been developed for F, Cl, Br, and I atoms using a self-consistent formula, containing only energy terms computed for dimers and the corresponding monomers at the same level of theory. The basis set developed considering four systems, one for each halogen atoms, has been then tested on the X40, X4 × 10 benchmarks as well as on other two, less standard, data sets. Finally, a large system (380 atoms) has been also considered as a "crash" test. Our results show that the simple and nonempirical PBE-QIDH/DH-SVPD approach is able to provide accurate results for interaction energies of all the considered systems and can thus be considered as a cheaper alternative to DH functionals paired with empirical dispersion corrections and a large basis set of triple-ζ quality.

Efficient Computation of the Interaction Energies of Very Large Non-covalently Bound Complexes

We present a new benchmark set consisting of 16 large non-covalently bound systems (LNCI16) ranging from 380 up to 1988 atoms and featuring diverse interaction motives. Gas-phase interaction energies are calculated with various composite DFT, semi-empirical quantum mechanical (SQM), and force field (FF) methods and are evaluated using accurate DFT reference values. Of the employed QM methods, PBEh-3c proves to be the most robust for large systems with a relative mean absolute deviation (relMAD) of 8.5% with respect to the reference interaction energies. r2SCAN-3c yields an even smaller relMAD, at least for the subset of complexes for which the calculation could be converged, but is less robust for systems with smaller HOMO–LUMO gaps. The inclusion of Fock-exchange is therefore important for the description of very large non-covalent interaction (NCI) complexes in the gas phase. GFN2-xTB was found to be the best performer of the SQM methods with an excellent result of only 11.1% deviation. From the assessed force fields, GFN-FF and GAFF achieve the best accuracy. Considering their low computational costs, both can be recommended for routine calculations of very large NCI complexes, with GFN-FF being clearly superior in terms of general applicability. Hence, GFN-FF may be routinely applied in supramolecular synthesis planning.

Sensory Perception of Non-Deuterated and Deuterated Organic Compounds

The chemical background of olfactory perception has been subject of intensive research, but no available model can fully explain the sense of smell. There are also inconsistent results on the role of the isotopology of molecules. In experiments with human subjects it was found that the isotope effect is weak with acetone and D6 -acetone. In contrast, clear differences were observed in the perception of octanoic acid and D15 -octanoic acid. Furthermore, a trained sniffer dog was initially able to distinguish between these isotopologues of octanoic acid. In chromatographic measurements, the respective deuterated molecule showed weaker interaction with a non-polar liquid phase. Quantum chemical calculations give evidence that deuterated octanoic acid binds more strongly to a model receptor than non-deuterated. In contrast, the binding of the non-deuterated molecule is stronger with acetone. The isotope effect is calculated in the framework of statistical mechanics. It results from a complicated interplay between various thermostatistical contributions to the non-covalent free binding energies and it turns out to be very molecule-specific. The vibrational terms including non-classical zero-point energies play about the same role as rotational/translational contributions and are larger than bond length effects for the differential isotope perception of odor for which general rules cannot be derived.

Noble Gas Bonding Interactions Involving Xenon Oxides and Fluorides

Noble gas (or aerogen) bond (NgB) can be outlined as the attractive interaction between an electron-rich atom or group of atoms and any element of Group-18 acting as an electron acceptor. The IUPAC already recommended systematic nomenclature for the interactions of groups 17 and 16 (halogen and chalcogen bonds, respectively). Investigations dealing with noncovalent interactions involving main group elements (acting as Lewis acids) have rapidly grown in recent years. They are becoming acting players in essential fields such as crystal engineering, supramolecular chemistry, and catalysis. For obvious reasons, the works devoted to the study of noncovalent Ng-bonding interactions are significantly less abundant than halogen, chalcogen, pnictogen, and tetrel bonding. Nevertheless, in this short review, relevant theoretical and experimental investigations on noncovalent interactions involving Xenon are emphasized. Several theoretical works have described the physical nature of NgB and their interplay with other noncovalent interactions, which are discussed herein. Moreover, exploring the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) and Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD), it is demonstrated that NgB interactions are crucial in governing the X-ray packing of xenon derivatives. Concretely, special attention is given to xenon fluorides and xenon oxides, since they exhibit a strong tendency to establish NgBs.

Is There a Single Ideal Parameter for Halogen-Bonding-Based Lewis Acidity?

Halogen-bond donors (halogen-based Lewis acids) have now found various applications in diverse fields of chemistry. The goal of this study was to identify a parameter obtainable from a single DFT calculation that reliably describes halogen-bonding strength (Lewis acidity). First, several DFT methods were benchmarked against the CCSD(T) CBS binding data of complexes of 17 carbon-based halogen-bond donors with chloride and ammonia as representative Lewis bases, which revealed M05-2X with a partially augmented def2-TZVP(D) basis set as the best model chemistry. The best single parameter to predict halogen-bonding strengths was the static σ-hole depth, but it still provided inaccurate predictions for a series of compounds. Thus, a more reliable parameter, Ωσ* , has been developed through the linear combination of the σ-hole depth and the σ*(C-I) energy, which was further validated against neutral, cationic, halogen- and nitrogen-based halogen-bond donors with very good performance.

Host chains assembled from 1,4-DITFB and PPNO mainly using C–I⋯⁻O–N⁺ halogen bonds present a remarkable capacity to accommodate PAHs of various sizes, and the generated host–guest ternary cocrystals exhibit diverse luminescence properties.

Relevant π-hole tetrel bonding interactions in ethyl 2-triazolyl-2-oxoacetate derivatives: Hirshfeld surface analysis and DFT calculations

We report the synthesis and X-ray characterization of four triazole derivatives that include an α-ketoester functionality and two phenyl substituents. The compounds form self-assembled dimers in the solid state establishing two symmetrically equivalent O⋯π-hole interactions.

Surprising solvent-induced structural rearrangements in large [N···I+···N] halogen-bonded supramolecular capsules: an ion mobility-mass spectrometry study

Coordinative halogen bonds have recently gained interest for the assembly of supramolecular capsules. Ion mobility-mass spectrometry and theoretical calculations now reveal the well-defined gas-phase structures of dimeric and hexameric [N···I+···N] halogen-bonded capsules with counterions located inside their cavities as guests. The solution reactivity of the large hexameric capsule shows the intriguing solvent-dependent equilibrium between the hexamer and an unprecedented pentameric [N···I+···N] halogen-bonded capsule, when the solvent is changed from chloroform to dichloromethane. The intrinsic flexibility of the cavitands enables this novel structure to adopt a pseudo-trigonal bipyramidal geometry with nine [N···I+···N] bonds along the edges and two pyridine binding sites uncomplexed.

: a halogen-bond assembled supramolecular catalyst

XBphos-Rh constitutes the first example of halogen bonding as the driving force behind the assembly of a transition-metal catalyst for hydroborations.

The use of halogen bonding as a tool to construct a catalyst backbone is reported. Specifically, pyridyl- and iodotetrafluoroaryl-substituted phosphines were assembled in the presence of a rhodium(i) precursor to form the corresponding halogen-bonded complex XBphos-Rh. The presence of fluorine substituents at the iodo-containing supramolecular motif was not necessary for halogen bonding to occur due to the template effect exerted by the rhodium center during formation of the halogen-bonded complex. The halogen-bonded supramolecular complexes were successfully tested in the catalytic hydroboration of terminal alkynes.

The halogen bond: Nature and applications

The halogen bond, corresponding to an attractive interaction between an electrophilic region in a halogen (X) and a nucleophile (B) yielding a R−X⋯B contact, found applications in many fields such as supramolecular chemistry, crystal engineering, medicinal chemistry, and chemical biology. Their large range of applications also led to an increased interest in their study using computational methods aiming not only at understanding the phenomena at a fundamental level, but also to help in the interpretation of results and guide the experimental work. Herein, a succinct overview of the recent theoretical and experimental developments is given starting by discussing the nature of the halogen bond and the latest theoretical insights on this topic. Then, the effects of the surrounding environment on halogen bonds are presented followed by a presentation of the available method benchmarks. Finally, recent experimental applications where the contribution of computational chemistry was fundamental are discussed, thus highlighting the synergy between the lab and modeling techniques.
