Sulfur-centred polyoxoniobate-based 3D organic–inorganic hybrid compound and its magnetic behavior

A Rhombus-Like Tetrameric Vanadoniobate Containing Pseudo-Sandwich-Type {Li ⊂ V2O8(Nb5O14)2} and Its Electrocatalytic Activity for the Selective Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

Ongoing research on V-containing polyoxoniobates (PONbs) is driven by their diverse structures and potential applications. Although Lindqvist-type {Nb6O19} is a widely used building block in PONbs, vanadoniobates based on {Nb6O19} and/or its derivatives are still very limited. Herein, a discrete vanadoniobate, LiNa14K11[Li2 ⊂ VIV8Nb32O110]·45H2O (1), has been synthesized by a hydrothermal method, which shows a rhombus-like tetrameric structure composed of two {V2O6(Nb6O19)} and two {Li ⊂ V2O8(Nb5O14)2} subunits derived from {Nb6O19}. Notably, the {Li ⊂ V2O8(Nb5O14)2} subunit has an interesting pseudo-sandwich-type structure, where a {LiV2O8} belt is coordinated by two monolacunary {Nb5O14} molecules and the central site of the cluster is occupied by Li+. Considering that 1 has both basic hexaniobates and redox active V centers, 1 was used as a noble metal-free electrocatalyst for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde, achieving complete conversion of benzyl alcohol with 94% selectivity for benzaldehyde in 3 h under ambient conditions without using any alkaline additives. Moreover, the catalytic performance of 1 remained largely unchanged after four cycles.

A Three-Dimensional (3D) Indium-Containing Polyoxoniobate Framework Based on {In5Nb71}n Helical Pillars

A rare 3D Indium-containing polyoxoniobate framework {H₉[Cu(en)₂(H₂O)₂][Cu(en)₂]₁₂[In(en)]₅[Nb₂₃-O₆₅(OH)₃(H₂O)₂]{Nb₂₄O₆₇(OH)₂(H₂O)₃]₂}·68H₂O(1), based on the In-containing polyoxoniobate cluster, {[In(en)]₅[Nb₂₃O₆₅(OH)₃(H₂O)₂][Nb₂₄O₆₇(OH)₂(H₂O)₃]₂}^35- ({In₅Nb₇₁}) and [Cu(en)₂]²⁺ linkers has been successfully synthesized. The nest-like cluster {In₅Nb₇₁} is constructed from one brand-new V-shaped {Nb₂₃O₇₀}, two triangle-shaped {Nb₂₄O₇₂} and five [In(en)]³⁺. The [In(en)] fragments link {Nb₂₄O₇₂} and {Nb₂₃O₇₀} units into unique {In₅Nb₇₁}_n helical pillars. The copper-amine complexes connect the {In₅Nb₇₁}_n helical pillars into a three-dimensional (3D) inorganic-organic hybrid In-Cu-containing framework. This material also exhibits good ionic conductivity and vapor adsorption capacity properties.

Synthesis, structures and stability of three V-substituted polyoxoniobate clusters based on [TeNb9O33]17- units

Three structurally intriguing polyoxoniobates (PONbs) based on the trivacant B-type α-Keggin ion {TeNb9O33}, H4K(CN3H6)2{[Cu4(2,2'-bipy)4(H2O)2][TeNb9V2O37]}·29H2O (1, 2,2'-bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine), H0.5K5Na2.5{[Cu(en)H2O]3[TeNb9V3O39]}·10H2O (2, en = ethylenediamine), and K3Na5{[Cu(1,3-dap)H2O]3[TeNb9V3O39]}·11H2O (3, 1,3-dap = 1,3-diaminopropane), are assembled by the conventional aqueous solution methods using a series of N-containing organic ligands. In 1, each of the two {VO4} units is attached to two coplanar NbO6 octahedra on the {Nb3O13} cluster of the {TeNb9O33} unit. Differently, three {VO4} units in 2 and 3 are linked to two edge-sharing NbO6 octahedra, respectively. Compounds 1-3 represent the first oxo NbTeV clusters and also the first vanadoniobates based on the trivacant Keggin PONb units. All three compounds were characterised by single-crystal X-ray structural analysis, TGA and IR, ESI-MS and 51V NMR spectroscopy. Furthermore, the magnetic properties of compounds 1 and 2 were also studied.

A large copper-niobate cluster with the pagoda-shaped subunit {Nb20O59}

A 72-nuclearity niobium cluster was synthesized, in which two {CuNb26O76} clusters and one {Nb20O59} cluster are fused in a triangular fashion, resulting in a {Nb12} cavity. Further, the simple nature of the species allowed its investigation by ESI-MS analysis, yielding two subunits with time.

A Series of Cube-Shaped Polyoxoniobates Encapsulating Octahedral Cu12X m O n Clusters With Hydrolytic Decomposition for Chemical Warfare Agents

This study reported a series of cube-shaped polyoxoniobates, {MCu₁₂O₈)(Cu₁₂X_mO_n)(Nb₇(OH)O₂₁)₈} [M = Nb(1, 2), Ln³⁺(3), X = I(1, m = 3, n = 3; 2, m = 5, n = 1), Br(3, m = 5, n = 1)]. As the first octahedral Cu₁₂X_mO_n cluster incorporated polyoxoniobate, the cube-shaped three-shell structure of {MCu₁₂O₈)(Cu₁₂X_mO_n)(Nb₇(OH)O₂₁)₈} polyanion contains a {MCu₁₂O₈} body-centered cuboctahedron, a {Cu₁₂X_mO_n} octahedron and a {Cu₁₂(Nb₇(OH)O₂₁)₈} cube. Compounds 1, 2, 3 show effective catalytic activities for the hydrolytic decomposition of chemical warefare agent simulants.

Directional Bonding in Decaniobate Inorganic Frameworks

Metal-oxo clusters offer an opportunity to assemble inorganic and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by a controlled building-block approach, which led to the revolutionary discoveries of zeolites and MOFs. Polyoxometalate clusters are soluble in water, but more challenging to link into frameworks; the inert oxo-caps that provide solubility are resistant to replacement or further connectivity. We demonstrate how the unique directional bonding and varying basicity of the decaniobate ([Nb₁₀ ]) oxo-caps can be exploited to build 1D, 2D, and 3D inorganic frameworks. In nine structures, A⁺ (A=Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs), AE²⁺ (AE=Ca, Sr, Ba) and Mn²⁺ demonstrate that the dimensionality of the obtained material is controlled by cation charge and size. Increased cation charge decreases selectivity for oxo-site bonding, leading to higher dimensional linking. Larger cation radii also decreases bonding selectivity, yielding higher dimensional materials. Ion-exchange studies of the A⁺ -Nb₁₀ family shows exclusive selectivity for Cs⁺ over other alkalis, which is important for radioactive Cs removal and sequestration.

Hexaniobate anions connected by [Ni(cyclam)]2+ complexes yield two interpenetrating three-dimensional networks

Syntheses were performed at room temperature using Ni(NO3)2·6H2O, cyclam (cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) and the precursors Li8[Nb6O19]· ≈22H2O or Na7[HNb6O19]·15H2O in a DMSO-H2O mixture. Yellow crystals of the new compound {[Ni(cyclam)]2H4Nb6O19}·12H2O could be obtained after one week applying the Li+ or Na+ salt as starting materials. The crystal structure is unique in polyoxoniobate (PONb) chemistry and displays two interpenetrating three-dimensional (3D) networks. The [Nb6O19]8– anion is expanded by four Ni2+ centered complexes via Ni–O bonds to terminal O2− anions of the hexaniobate anion. The 3D networks are generated by further Ni–O bond formation between neighboring [Nb6O19]8− anions. The remaining void space is occupied by H2O molecules which form a water cluster.

In this work, novel dimeric polyoxotantalate (POTa) clusters {Cu(en)(Ta₆O₁₉)}₂/{Cu(enMe)(Ta₆O₁₉)}₂ were introduced as SBUs to construct a new family of extended POTa materials, including the first two 3D POTa frameworks and two 2D POTa layers.

Three types of N-heterocyclic aromatic acid decorated 3d-4f heterometallic Keggin-type tungstoantimonates: Na₄[Ln(H₂O)₅]₂[Fe₄(H₂O)₂(pic)₄(B-β-SbW₉O₃₃)₂]·26H₂O [Ln³⁺ = La³⁺ (1), Pr³⁺ (2), Nd³⁺ (3), Sm³⁺ (4), Eu³⁺ (5)], Na₆H₄[Fe₂W₄O₉(H₂O)₂(Hpic)₄ (B-β-SbW₉O₃₃)₂][Ln(H₂O)₈]₂[Fe₄W₂O₇(H₂O)₄(pic)₂(Hpic)₂(B-β-SbW₉O₃₃)₂]·38H₂O [Ln³⁺ = Gd³⁺ (6), Dy³⁺ (7)], and Na₂H₂{[Ln(H₂O)₆]₂[Fe₄(H₂O)₂(Hpic)₂(pic)₂(B-β-SbW₉O₃₃)₂]}₂·44H₂O [Ln³⁺ = Ho³⁺ (8), Er³⁺ (9), Hpic = 2-picolinic acid] have been prepared. 1-5 comprise a quadripic-inserted Krebs-type [Fe₄(H₂O)₂(pic)₄(B-β-SbW₉O₃₃)₂]^10- moiety supported by two [Ln(H₂O)₅]³⁺ groups on both sides where it can be considered that four pic ligands replace eight aqua ligands located on the original Krebs-type [Fe₄(H₂O)₁₀(B-β-SbW₉O₃₃)₂]^10- fragment to form the [Fe₄(H₂O)₂(pic)₄(B-β-SbW₉O₃₃)₂]^10- moiety. Remarkably, the quadripic-inserted subunits are further concatenated through the coordination role of the pic ligands to create a 3-D heterometallic framework. In contrast, the molecular units of 6-7 contain two kinds of non-Krebs-type quadripic-inserted [Fe₂W₄O₉(H₂O)₂(Hpic)₄(B-β-SbW₉O₃₃)₂]^6- and {[Ln(H₂O)₈]₂[Fe₄W₂O₇(H₂O)₄(pic)₂(Hpic)₂(B-β-SbW₉O₃₃)₂]}^4- moieties. The molecular units of 8-9 contain two identical quadripic-inserted Krebs-type {[Ln(H₂O)₆]₂[Fe₄(H₂O)₂(Hpic)₂(pic)₂(B-β-SbW₉O₃₃)₂]}^2- moieties, and both display a 1-D heterometallic double chain. For all we know, 1-9 stand for the first 3d-4f heterometallic tungstoantimonate hybrids functionalized by pic ligands. Particularly, the solid-state NIR photoluminescence (PL) spectrum in the range of 800-1450 nm of 3 and the solid-state visible PL spectra in the range of 500-750 nm of 4, 5, 7, and 8 at room temperature display the featured fluorescence emission bands stemming from Ln³⁺ cations. In the PL emission procedures of 5 and 7, energy transfer from [B-β-SbW₉O₃₃]^9- fragments and pic ligands to Ln³⁺ ions has been observed. Additionally, the correlated color temperatures of 4, 5, 7, and 8 are indexed to 2731, 2020, 4557, and 1685 K, respectively.
