Abstract
Photocatalytic solar-to-fuel conversion over metal halide perovskites (MHPs) has recently attracted much attention, while the roles of defects in MHPs are still under debate. Specifically, the mainstream viewpoint is that the defects are detrimental to photocatalytic performance, while some recent studies show that certain types of defects contribute to photoactivity enhancement. However, a systematic summary of why it is contradictory and how the defects in MHPs affect photocatalytic performance is still lacking. In this review, the innovative roles of defects in MHP photocatalysts are highlighted. First, the origins of defects in MHPs are elaborated, followed by clarifying certain benefits of defects in photocatalysts including optical absorption, charge dynamics, and surface reaction. Afterward, the recent progress on defect-related MHP photocatalysis, i.e., CO2 reduction, H2 generation, pollutant degradation, and organic synthesis is systematically discussed and critically appraised, putting emphasis on their beneficial effects. With defects offering peculiar sets of merits and demerits, the personal opinion on the ongoing challenges is concluded and outlining potentially promising opportunities for engineering defects on MHP photocatalysts. This critical review is anticipated to offer a better understanding of the MHP defects and spur some inspiration for designing efficient MHP photocatalysts.

Dipole Moment and Built-In Polarization Electric Field Induced by Oxygen Vacancies in BiOX for Boosting Piezoelectric-Photocatalytic Removal of Uranium(VI). Inorg Chem 2024; 63:5931-5944. Abstract
Piezoelectric-photocatalysis is distinguished by its piezoelectricity as an external force that induces deformation within the catalyst to engender a polarized electric field compared to conventional photocatalysis. Herein, the piezoelectric photocatalyst BiOBr has been expertly synthesized via a plasma process and applied for piezoelectric-photocatalysis removal of uranium(VI) for the first time. The abundant surface oxygen vacancies (OVs) could induce a dipole moment and built-in electric field, which endows BiOBr with excellent separation and transport efficiency of photogenerated charges to actuate more charges to participate in the piezoelectric-photocatalytic reduction process. Consequently, under visible light and ultrasound (150 W and 40 kHz), the removal rate constant of OVs-BiOBr-30 (0.0306 min-1) was 2.4, 30.6, and 6 times higher than those of BiOBr (0.01273 min-1), ultrasound, or photocatalysis, respectively. The piezoelectric-photocatalytic synergy is also universal for BiOX (X = Cl, Br, or I) to accelerate the reduction rate of uranium(VI). This work highlights the role of piezoelectric-photocatalysis in the treatment of uranium-containing wastewater, which is of great significance for resource conservation and environmental remediation.

Abstract
In this study, a chemical precipitation approach was adopted to produce a photocatalyst based on bismuth tungstate Bi2WO6 for enhanced and environmentally friendly organic pollutant degradation. Various tools such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, were employed to assess the structural and morphological properties. Hence, the XRD profiles showed a well crystallized Bi2WO6 orthorhombic phase. The photocatalytic performance of the resulting photocatalyst was assessed by the decomposition of Rhodamine B (RhB) and methyl orange (MO) with a decomposition efficiency of 97 and 92%, along with the highest chemical oxygen demand of 82 and 79% during 120 min of illumination, respectively. The principal novelty of the present work is to focus on the changes in the crystalline structure, the morphology, and the optical and the photoelectrochemical characteristics of the Bi2WO6, by tuning the annealing temperature of the designed photocatalyst. Such physicochemical property changes in the as-prepared photocatalyst will affect in turn its photocatalytic activity toward the organic pollutant decomposition. The photocatalytic mechanism was elaborated based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, photocurrent analysis, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and radical trapping measurements. The overall data indicate that the superoxide O2•- and holes h+ are the principal species responsible for the pollutant photodegradation.

Abstract
Integration of oxygen vacancies (Vo) into nanostructured semiconductor-based photocatalysts has been recognized as a promising strategy for enhancing the performance of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. However, precisely controlling the Vo concentration in photocatalysts via an effective and tunable approach remains challenging. Herein, a series of optimized bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) nanosheet-based photoanodes with varying concentrations of Vo were prepared by a sonochemical method with in situ cavitation detection, which enables accurate manipulation of the acoustic cavitation intensity applied to the surface of Bi2WO6 photoanodes in alkaline solution. Based on the analysis of the Vo concentration and sound field characteristics, the mechanism of sonochemical regulation of Vo in Bi2WO6 nanosheets was interpreted. Specifically, the increase in Vo concentration can be attributed to the enhancement of Bi-O bond dissociation. This enhancement is influenced not only by the intensified impact of shear force and the generation of active radicals by transient cavitation, but also by the accelerated diffusion of the reactant, a result of stable cavitation. By optimizing the transient and stable cavitation intensity, a Vo-rich Bi2WO6 photoanode was obtained without altering the microstructure of Bi2WO6 nanosheets. The presence of high concentration Vo facilitates the interfacial chemical reactivity and the transmission of photogenerated carriers, leading to the drastic promotion of the PEC water splitting performance. The transient photocurrent density of the Vo-rich Bi2WO6 photoanode reaches 69.2 μA cm-2 (1.23 V vs. RHE), 7.86 times that of the untreated Bi2WO6 photoanode. Additionally, the charge injection efficiency increases to 35.4%. This work provides a controllable and effective method for defect engineering of nanostructured semiconductor-based electrodes.

Abstract
Transforming CO2 into renewable fuels or valuable carbon compounds could be a practical means to tackle the issues of global warming and energy crisis. Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, and offers a broader range of potential applications than other CO2 conversion techniques. Ferroelectric materials, which belong to a class of materials with switchable polarization, are attractive candidates as catalysts due to their distinctive and substantial impact on surface physical and chemical characteristics. This review provides a concise overview of the fundamental principles underlying photocatalysis and the mechanism involved in CO2 reduction. Additionally, the composition and properties of ferroelectric materials are introduced. This review expands on the research progress in using ferroelectric materials for photocatalytic reduction of CO2 from three perspectives: directly as a catalyst, by modification, and construction of heterojunctions. Finally, the future potential of ferroelectric materials for photocatalytic CO2 reduction is presented. This review may be a valuable guide for creating reasonable and more effective photocatalysts based on ferroelectric materials.

Abstract
Lead-free halide perovskites are promising materials for solar energy applications. However, their efficiency is hindered by poor light absorption in the visible-near-infrared region. Herein, we introduce vanadium (V) with low-lying ground/excited-state energy levels to form two types of stable lead-free V-based perovskite (Cs2NaVCl6 and Cs3V2Cl9) colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) with strong light absorption covering the ultraviolet to near-infrared region. We find the absorption can be further enhanced by structural regulation, in which the zero-dimensional (0D) Cs3V2Cl9 NCs show stronger and red-shifted (up to 1400 nm) light absorption compared to the three-dimensional Cs2NaVCl6 NCs. In 0D Cs3V2Cl9 NCs, [V2Cl9]3- dimers play a vital role in governing strong visible-near-infrared light absorption. We demonstrated their application for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Our work sheds light on the structure-property relationship governing the absorption behavior, providing a novel route for tuning the light absorption ability of lead-free halide perovskites.

Abstract
A microporous Sn2+-containing SnO2 material presenting microrod morphology and a surface area of 93.0 m2 g-1 was synthesized via a simple hydrothermal route. Sn2+ ions were detected in the interior of the material (15.8 at.%) after the corrosion of a sample through sputtering. The material's optical properties have demonstrated the absorption of a considerable fraction of visible light up to wavelengths of 671 nm, due to the presence of Sn2+ states in the material's band structure. The analysis of the internal crystalline structure of a single microrod was carried out with the aid of a focused ion beam microscope and indicated that the material is mesocrystalline down to nanoscale level. It was proposed that the Sn2+ ions occupy intergranular sites in the highly defective crystalline structure of the material and that Sn2+ states, as well as its relatively large surface area, are responsible for the material's superior photoactivity. The synthesized material was tested as a photocatalyst to decompose hazardous contaminants in water. The photocatalytic performance of the material was much higher than those of commercial TiO2 and SnO2 materials, decomposing nearly all methyl orange (an azo-dye model) content in water (10 mg L-1) in 6 min under UV irradiation for a photocatalyst dose of 5.33 g L-1. The photodegradation of methyl orange was also verified under visible light.

Abstract
Herein, we designed and synthesized a series of rare earth doped BiOF/Bi2MoO6 heterojunctions. The doping locations of rare earth ions were altered to determine the influence on the visible and near-infrared photocatalytic activity of heterojunctions. It is experimentally and theoretically confirmed that doping with Tm3+/Yb3+ in one semiconductor of the heterojunction produces superior photocatalytic efficiency than doping in both semiconductors. In addition, the near infrared photocatalytic efficiency strongly relied on upconversion luminescence from the Re3+ doped semiconductor in the heterojunction. By further modifying with CQDs, the CQDs/BiOF:Tm3+,Yb3+/Bi2MoO6 sample shows excellent visible and near-infrared photocatalytic performance, with 90% degradation of RhB occurring in the first 20 min under visible irradiation. This can be attributed to the large BET area, efficient photoinduced carrier separation and the upconversion process of the composite. This research will provide a systematic solution for realizing full-spectrum responsive and highly efficient photocatalysis by combination of rare earth ion doping, quantum dot modification and Z-scheme heterojunctions.

Abstract
Photocatalysis is an important technique for synthetic transformations. However, little attention has been paid to light-driven synergistic redox reactions for directed synthesis. Herein, the authors report tunable oxidation of benzyl to phenylcarbinol with the modest yield (47%) in 5 h via singlet oxygen (1 O2 ) and proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) over the photocatalyst Zn0.5 Cd0.5 S (ZCS)/graphene oxide (GO) under exceptionally mild conditions. Theoretical calculations indicate that the presence of S vacancies on the surface of ZCS/GO photocatalyst is crucial for the adsorption and activation of O2 , successively generating the superoxide radical (• O2 - ) and 1 O2 , attributing to the regulation of local electron density on the surface of ZCS/GO and photogenerated holes (h+ ). Meanwhile, accelerated transfer of photogenerated electrons (e- ) to GO caused by the π-π stacking effect is conducive to the subsequent aldehyde hydrogenation to benzyl alcohol rather than non-selective oxidation of aldehyde to carboxylic acid. Anisotropic charge transport driven by the built-in electric field can further promote the separation of e- and h+ for multistep reactions. Promisingly, one-pot photocatalytic conversion of p-xylene to 4-methylbenzyl alcohol is beneficial for reducing the harmful effects of aromatics on human health. Furthermore, this study provides novel insights into the design of photocatalysts for cascade reactions.

Abstract
Sluggish reaction kinetics and the undesired side reactions (hydrogen evolution reaction and self-reduction) are the main bottlenecks of electrochemical conversion reactions, such as the carbon dioxide and nitrate reduction reactions (CO2 RR and NO3 RR). To date, conventional strategies to overcome these challenges involve electronic structure modification and modulation of the charge-transfer behavior. Nonetheless, key aspects of surface modification, focused on boosting the intrinsic activity of active sites on the catalyst surface, are yet to be fully understood. Engingeering of oxygen vacancies (OVs) can tune surface/bulk electronic structure and improve surface active sites of electrocatalysts. The continuous breakthroughs and significant progress in the last decade position engineering of OVs as a potential technique for advancing electrocatalysis. Motivated by this, the state-of-the-art findings of the roles of OVs in both the CO2 RR and the NO3 RR are presented. The review starts with a description of approaches to constructing and techniques for characterizing OVs. This is followed by an overview of the mechanistic understanding of the CO2 RR and a detailed discussion on the roles of OVs in the CO2 RR. Then, insights into the NO3 RR mechanism and the potential of OVs on NO3 RR based on early findings are highlighted. Finally, the challenges in designing CO2 RR/NO3 RR electrocatalysts and perspectives in studying OV engineering are provided.

Abstract
Modified metal-organic framework (MOF) materials are promising adsorbents for phosphate removal in aquatic environment. Herein, a high-efficiency and eco-friendly La/Ca composite (La/Ca-BTC) was designed by calcining La/Ca MOFs for phosphate adsorption. Batch adsorption experiments showed that La/Ca-BTC-3/1 (La: Ca molar ratio of 3: 1) had an excellent phosphate sorption capacity of 101.01 mg P/g, and could also maintain relatively high adsorption in the range of pH 4-8. Anion coexistence experiments showed that, except for carbonate ions, common anions have little effect on adsorption. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis indicated that oxygen vacancies formed in the La/Ca-BTC, probably by metal doping. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation showed that oxygen vacancies could affect the orbital hybridization energy during phosphate adsorption by changing the state density, reducing the bond energy barrier for phosphate adsorption, thereby enhancing the adsorption effect of La/Ca-BTC. Phosphate adsorbents generally incur severe environmental risk by their gradual release of metal ions due to changes in water quality, especially where there is high natural organic matter (NOM). The DFT calculation further demonstrated that Ca2+ in the La/Ca-BTC was more inclined to combine with humic acid (HA) than La3+. Therefore, due to the introduction of Ca2+, La/Ca-BTC exhibited lower La-release in the presence of HA than La-BTC, which could be reduced by about 52.04%. Furthermore, La/Ca-BTC had the potential to simultaneously remove NOM which has important implication for aquatic remediation. These results are of great significance for the development of environmentally friendly phosphate adsorbents.

Abstract
Switching to renewable, carbon-neutral sources of energy is urgent and critical for climate change mitigation. Despite how hydrogen production by electrolyzing water can enable renewable energy storage, current technologies unfortunately require rare and expensive platinum group metal electrocatalysts, which limit their economic viability. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are low-cost, earth-abundant materials that possess the potential to replace platinum as the hydrogen evolution catalyst for water electrolysis, but so far, pristine TMDs are plagued by poor catalytic performances. Defect engineering is an attractive approach to enhance the catalytic efficiency of TMDs and is not subjected to the limitations of other approaches like phase engineering and surface structure engineering. In this minireview, we discuss the recent progress made in defect-engineered TMDs as efficient, robust, and low-cost catalysts for water splitting. The roles of chalcogen atomic defects in engineering TMDs for improvements to the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are summarized. Finally, we highlight our perspectives on the challenges and opportunities of defect engineering in TMDs for electrocatalytic water splitting. We hope to provide inspirations for designing the state-of-the-art catalysts for future breakthroughs in the electrocatalytic HER.

Abstract
Oxygen-containing organics, which are generated from the selective oxidation of their corresponding hydrocarbons, have high value in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. However, their oxidation reactions are very challenging as the products are more active than the substrates, especially for the oxidation of cyclohexane (CHA). Herein, we focused on the one-step preparation of Bi2WO6 with double active sites of tunable metallic Bi and oxygen vacancies (OV-Bi/Bi2WO6) by a facile solvothermal treatment. Then, OV-Bi/Bi2WO6 was used as an efficient photocatalyst for the partial oxidation of CHA to cyclohexanone (CHA-one) for the first time in air as an oxidant under solvent-free and room temperature conditions. The Bi : Bi2WO6 ratio in the as-prepared OV-Bi/Bi2WO6 heterojunction could be tailored from 0.08 to 8.43 by controlling the solvothermal temperature, and the synergistic effect between DMF and EG could increase the reduction of MDF/EG and promote the production of Bi. Moreover, OV-Bi/Bi2WO6-160 yielded 4.4 and 8.8 times more CHA-one (128.8 μmol) than pure Bi2WO6 and metallic Bi, respectively, and achieved 93.6% selectivity to CHA-one in air as an oxidant under solvent-free conditions. The results revealed that the highly enhanced photocatalytic activity was mainly attributed to the superior specific surface area, outstanding photo-absorption, abundant oxygen vacancies, and efficient electron-hole separation. Moreover, for the unique double active sites in OV-Bi/Bi2WO6, oxygen vacancies can enhance the adsorption and activation capacity of Bi2WO6 for O2, while metallic Bi can improve the adsorption and activation capacity of Bi2WO6 for CHA. Meanwhile, OV-Bi/Bi2WO6 also exhibited excellent durability due to the strong interaction between metallic Bi and Bi2WO6. The present work provides a flexible approach for tailoring the Bi : Bi2WO6 ratio and outlines an effective method for producing CHA-one from CHA under mild conditions.

Abstract
Environmental-friendly and efficient strategies for triclosan (TCS) removal have received more attention. Influenced by COVID-19, a large amount of TCS contaminants were accumulated in medical and domestic wastewater discharges. In this study, a unique g-C3N4/Bi2MoO6 heterostructure was fabricated and optimized by a novel and simple method for superb photocatalytic dechlorination of TCS into 2-phenoxyphenol (2-PP) under visible light irradiation. The as-prepared samples were characterized and analyzed by XRD, BET, SEM, XPS, etc. The rationally designed g-C3N4/Bi2MoO6 (4:6) catalyst exhibited notably photocatalytic activity in that more than 95.5% of TCS was transformed at 180 min, which was 3.6 times higher than that of pure g-C3N4 powder. This catalyst promotes efficient photocatalytic electron-hole separation for efficient dechlorination by photocatalytic reduction. The samples exhibited high recyclable ability and the dechlorination pathway was clear. The results of Density Functional Theory calculations displayed the TCS dechlorination selectivity has different mechanisms and hydrogen substitution may be more favorable than hydrogen abstraction in the TCS dechlorination hydrogen transfer process. This work will provide an experimental and theoretical basis for designing high-performance photocatalysts to construct the systems of efficient and safe visible photocatalytic reduction of aromatic chlorinated pollutants, such as TCS in dechlorinated waters.

Abstract
The photocatalysis conversion of CO2 into fuels has become an encouraging method to address climate and energy issues as a long-term solution. Single material suffers poor yield due to low light energy utilization and high recombination rate of photoinduced electron-hole pairs. It is an efficient approach to construct heterojunction through two or three materials to improve the photocatalytic performance. Recently, 2D-based heterojunction is getting popular for outstanding properties, such as special light collecting structure to enhance light harvest, intimate interface to facilitate charge transfer and separation, and large specific surface area to provide abundant reactive sites. Recently, some new 2D-based heterostructures materials (both structure and composition) have been developed with excellent performance. 2D materials exert structural and functional advantages in these fine composite photocatalysts. In this review, the literatures about the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 are mainly summarized based on overall structure, interface type and material type of 2D-based heterojunction, with special attention given to the preparation, characterization, structural advantages and reaction mechanism of novel 2D-based heterojunction. This work is in hope of offering a basis for designing improved composite photocatalyst for CO2 photoreduction.

Abstract
One of the most enticing approaches to environmental restoration and energy conversion is photocatalysis powered by solar light. Traditional photocatalysts have limited practical uses due to inadequate light absorption, charge separation, and unknown reaction mechanisms. Discovering new visible-light photocatalysts and investigating their modification is crucial in photocatalysis. Bi-based photocatalytic nanomaterials have gotten much interest as they exhibit distinctive geometric shapes, flexible electronic structures, and good photocatalytic performance under visible light. They can be employed as stand-alone photocatalysts for pollution control and energy production, but they do not have optimum efficacy. As a result, their photocatalytic effectiveness has been significantly improved in the recent decades. Numerous newly created concepts and methodologies have brought significant progress in defining the fundamental features of photocatalysts, upgrading the photocatalytic ability, and understanding essential reactions of the photocatalytic process. This paper provides insights into the characteristics of Bi-based photocatalysts, making them a promising future nanomaterial for environmental remediation. The current review discusses the fabrication techniques and enhancement in Bi-based semiconductor photocatalysts. Various environmental applications, such as H2 generation and elimination of water pollutants, are also discussed in terms of semiconductor photocatalysis. Future developments will be guided by the uses, issues, and possibilities of Bi-based photocatalysts.

Abstract
The utilization of solar energy for CO2 conversion not only enables a green and low-carbon recycling of CO2 with renewable energy, but also solves ecological problems. BixMOy (M = V, Mo, W) materials have typical layered structures and unique electronic properties that provide suitable band gaps and potential to meet the basic conditions for CO2 reduction. However, pristine BixMOy faces with problems such as small specific surface area, insufficient active sites, low charge carriers' separation and utilization efficiency. This review comprehensively described the basic principles and reaction pathways of photocatalytic CO2 reduction, and further presented the research progress of BixMOy catalysts in CO2 conversion reactions. In this perspective, we further focus on the design concepts and modification strategies to improve the photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity of BixMOy, such as morphology control, constructing surface vacancies and heterojunction fabrication. Finally, based on representative researches, the present review will be expected to provide updated information and insights for developing advanced BixMOy materials to further improve CO2 reduction activity and selectivity.

With the assistance of semiconductor-based materials, heterogeneous photocatalysis converts solar energy directly into chemical energy that can be readily stored. It has been employed in several fields including CO2 reduction, H2O splitting, and organic synthesis. Given that near-infrared (NIR) light occupies 47% of sunlight, photocatalytic systems with a NIR response are gaining more and more attention. To enhance the solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency, precise regulation of the symmetric/asymmetric nanostructures and band structures of NIR-response photocatalysts is indispensable. Under the irradiation of NIR light, the symmetric nano-morphologies (e.g., rod-like core-shell shape), asymmetric electronic structures (e.g., defect levels in band gap) and asymmetric heterojunctions (e.g., PN junctions, semiconductor-metal or semiconductor-dye composites) of designed photocatalytic systems play key roles in promoting the light absorption, the separation of electron/hole pairs, the transport of charge carriers to the surface, or the rate of surface photocatalytic reactions. This review will comprehensively analyze the four main synthesis protocols for the fabrication of NIR-response photocatalysts with improved reaction performance. The design methods involve bandgap engineering for the direct utilization of NIR photoenergy, the up-conversion of NIR light into ultraviolet/visible light, and the photothermal effect by converting NIR photons into local heat. Additionally, challenges and perspectives for the further development of heterogeneous photocatalysts with NIR response are also discussed based on their potential applications.

Abstract
Development of a new and green strategy for C(sp3 )-N bond cleavage is very interesting. Herein, photocatalytic cleavage of the C(sp3 )-N bond of trialkylamines was achieved, with concurrent formation of dialkylamines and olefins. It was found that a rationally designed 2D-Bi2 WO6 @1D-LaPO4 heterostructure was very efficient for the reaction due to its high light collection efficiency and unique catalytic properties. The strategy could be used for different trialkylamines, including triethylamine, tri-n-propylamine, and ethyl-di-isopropylamine. The mechanistic investigation indicated that the catalyst with heterostructure was not only favorable for charge carrier separation but also rendered excited electrons with high reduction capacity. This work opens a way for C(sp3 )-N bond cleavage of trialkylamines.

Abstract
Understanding of the roles of oxygen species at reducible metal oxide surfaces under real oxidation conditions is important to improve the performance of these catalysts. The present study addresses this issue by applying a combination of operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy with a temperature-programmed reaction cell and mass spectrometry to explore the behaviors of oxygen species during H2 oxidation in a temperature range of 25-400 °C at β-MnO2 surfaces. It is revealed that O2 is dissociated simultaneously into terminal-type oxygen (M2+-O2-) and bridge-type oxygen (M+-O2--M+) via adsorption at the Mn cation with an oxygen vacancy. O2 adsorption is inhibited if the Mn cation is covered with terminal-adsorbed species (O, OH, or H2O). In a temperature range of 110-150 °C, OH at Mn cation becomes reactive and its reaction product (H2O) can desorb from the Mn cation, resulting in the formation of bare Mn cation for O2 adsorption and dissociation. At a temperature above 150 °C, OH is reactive enough to leave bare Mn cation for O2 adsorption and dissociation. These results suggest that bare metal cations with oxygen vacancies are important to improve the performance of reducible metal oxide catalysts.

Abstract
Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 has attracted enormous interest as a sustainable and renewable source of energy. In the past decade, numerous bulk-type semiconductors have been developed, but the existing designs suffer many limitations, namely rapid recombination of charge carriers and weak light absorption ability. Herein, a bottom-up approach was developed to design atomically thin sulfur-doped Bi2 WO6 perovskite nanosheets (S-BWO) with improved reduction ability, extended visible light absorption, prolonged lifetime of charge carriers, enhanced adsorption of CO2 , and reduced work function. Compared with pristine Bi2 WO6 (P-BWO), S-BWO nanosheets exhibited a 3-fold improvement in photocatalytic reduction of CO2 under simulated sunlight irradiation. Experimental studies and density functional theory calculations revealed the synergistic roles of atomically thin nanosheets and S atoms in promoting photocatalytic efficiency.

Abstract
Artificially simulated photosynthesis has created substantial curiosity as the majority of efforts in this arena have been aimed to upsurge solar fuel efficiencies for commercialization. The layered inorganic 2D nanosheets offer considerably higher tunability of their chemical surface, physicochemical properties and catalytic activity. Despites the intrinsic advantages of such metal-based materials viz., metal oxides, transition metal dichalcogenides, metal oxyhalides, metal organic frameworks, layered double hydroxide, MXene's, boron nitride, black phosphorous and perovskites, studies on such systems are limited for applications in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The role of metal-based layers for CO2 conversion and new strategies such as surface modifications, defect generation and heterojunctions to optimize their functionalities are discussed in this review. Research prospects and technical challenges for future developments of layered 2D metal-based nanomaterials are critically discussed.

Abstract
The development of next-generation photocatalysts has consistently gained inspiration from the evolution of natural nanostructures regarding their fabrication and application for the elimination of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Herein, we synthesized blue-colored oxygen-vacant Bi2WO6-x inside butterfly wing architectures (BW-Bi2WO6-x) via modified functionalization and solvothermal techniques. Given that the (WO4)2- layer in Bi2WO6 structurally resembles the structure of WO3, the introduction of oxygen vacancies (OVs) boosts the solar light absorption in comparison to the short visible light absorption range (<450 nm) in pristine Bi2WO6 (P-Bi2WO6). Hence, the fabricated BW-Bi2WO6-x sample exhibited broadened photo-absorption over the visible to NIR wavelength range, improved semiconductor attachment on the wing architecture and heightened surface area with numerous active sites for the adsorption of POP molecules. The performance of the BW-Bi2WO6-x photocatalyst was monitored for the elimination of methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RhB) and 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) under UV light exposure, yielding 91%, 92% and 94% degradation, respectively, in 60 min. Similarly, the degradation efficiencies of 94%, 98% and 98% for the photodegradation of MB, RhB and 4-CP under visible light for 60 min, respectively, were observed. Under NIR light, 80%, 79% and 85% degradation efficiencies were observed for MB, RhB and 4-CP, respectively, after 60 min. Therefore, the proposed BW-Bi2WO6-x sample can provide insights and inspire the development of photo-responsive materials for applications in energy, defense and water treatment.

Abstract
Debromination is a primary and critical procedure in the treatment of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the environment. Herein, oxygen vacancy-enriched Bi2MoO6 is firstly applied in the photoreduction debromination of PBDEs under visible light illumination. The introduction of oxygen vacancies not only promotes the red-shift of the light absorption band by Bi2MoO6, but also activates the C-Br bond through the formation of Br-O halogen bonds, thus realizing efficient visible light reduction of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209). The activation adsorption mode inferred by tracking analysis of the degradation process shows that the meta-position adsorption mode is the main adsorption configuration during the activation process, while the ortho-position adsorption mode is the most difficult. Thence, the oxygen vacancy-dominated photocatalytic BDE209 process is a position-selective multi-electron reduction process. The study shows that oxygen vacancy assisted C-Br activation is an excellent strategy for photocatalytic treatment of halogenated persistent organic pollutants.

Abstract
The low light absorption and rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers are primary contributors to the low activity of various photocatalysts. Fabrication of oxygen vacancy defect-rich materials for improved photocatalytic activities has been attracting tremendous attention from researchers all over the world. In this work, we have compared the photocatalytic activities of oxygen vacancy-rich Bi2MoO6(BMO-OV) and Bi2WO6(BWO-OV) for the degradation of a model pharmaceutical pollutant, ciprofloxacin under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic activity was increased from 47% to 77% and 40% to-67% for BMO-OVand BWO-OV, respectively in comparison to pristine oxides. This enhancement can be ascribed to suppressed charge carrier recombination and increased surface active sites. In addition, scavenger studies have been done to explain the role of photoinduced charge carriers in the degradation mechanism. Moreover, oxygen vacancy-rich photocatalysts have remained stable even after three consecutive cycles, making them promising materials for practical applications. Overall, this work provides deeper insight into the design and development of oxygen vacancy-rich materials.

Abstract
The oxygen vacancies could efficiently drive the photocatalytic oxidation of aromatic alcohol through the activation of reactants. However, the activation between aromatic alcohol and O2 (oxidant) over oxygen vacancies is rarely studied. Herein, the ZnIn2S4/MIL-121 heterostructure with abundant surface uncoordinated carboxyl was rationally designed for benzyl alcohol (BA) oxidation under visible light. Oxygen vacancies on catalysts were self-induced after the surface complexation between the uncoordinated carboxyl and BA molecules. Based on the reaction results, it is concluded that the oxygen vacancy activation to BA is more effective than that to O2 for BA oxidation over ZnIn2S4/MIL-121 hybrids. Specifically, when the activation fully occurs on BA (reaction in N2), an admirable conversion of 93.9% (corresponding production rate of benzaldehyde: 2348 μmol·g-1·h-1) is achieved, which is 3.4 times that of pure ZnIn2S4, whereas an inferior conversion of 45.9% is obtained in O2 due to the competition effect between O2 and BA for oxygen vacancies.

Abstract
The development of efficient, effective, and large-scale treatment methods to address high-risk emerging contaminants (ECs) is a growing challenge in environmental remediation. Herein, a novel parallel coupling strategy of adsorption separation and photodegradation regeneration (parallel ASPR) is proposed; subsequently, an adsorptive photocatalyst (Zn-doped BiOI) is designed to demonstrate how to effectively eliminate fluoroquinolones (FQs) from water with the proposed ASPR scheme. Compared with pure BiOI, the addition of Zn2+ during synthesis has a significant influence on the morphology and structure of the products, resulting in Zn-doped BiOI samples with up to 5 times the specific surface area, 32 times the adsorption capacity, and 20 times the photocurrent intensity. The optimized Zn-doped BiOI sample has an excellent adsorption efficiency for FQs with a removal rate that exceeds 95% after 5 min of adsorption for all 6 tested FQ antibiotics. Then the adsorbed contaminants can be effectively degraded during the later visible-light irradiation process, and the adsorbent can be regenerated synchronously, showing excellent ASPR cycling performances. The mechanisms of rapid adsorption and photocatalysis were explored via material characterizations, adsorption models, density functional theory calculations, and photogenerated species analyses. The results reveal that the enhanced adsorption of Zn-doped BiOI for FQs is due to its high specific surface area, coordination-based chemical adsorption, and surface electrostatic attraction, while its superior visible-light photodegradation performance is mainly ascribed to its strong redox ability, abundant surface oxygen vacancies, and enhanced photogenerated carrier separation efficiency.

Abstract
Photocatalysis is regarded as a promising technology for removal of nitrogen oxide (NO), however, the low photocatalytic efficiencies under visible light irradiation and the deactivation of the photocatalyst are as yet the significant issues that should be addressed. In this work, visible-light-driven Bi2Ti2O7/CaTiO3 heterojunction composites were synthesized by a facile in-situ hydrothermal method. The Bi2Ti2O7/CaTiO3 composites displayed superior visible light photocatalytic activity than pure CaTiO3 and pure Bi2Ti2O7 in the removal of NO at the 600 ppb level in air. Among all the composites, Bi2Ti2O7/CaTiO3 containing 20 wt% Bi2Ti2O7 exhibited the best photocatalytic activity, achieving a maximum removal efficiency of 59%. The improved photocatalytic performance is mainly attributed to the strong visible-light-absorbing ability, the presence of an appropriate density of oxygen vacancy defects and the formation of heterojunction between CaTiO3 and Bi2Ti2O7, resulting in an efficient charge separation at the interface as proven by photoluminescence (PL) and photo-induced current measurements. According to trapping experiments and spin-trapping ESR analysis, the •O2- and h+ are the principal reactive species involved in the photocatalytic NO removal. In addition, the as-obtained Bi2Ti2O7/CaTiO3 composite showed good chemical stability, which is beneficial for practical applications in air pollution removal.

Abstract
Photocatalytic selective oxidation of alcohols into high value-added carbonyl compounds accompanied by producing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is undoubtedly a more efficient solar energy conversion strategy with high atom economy. Herein, we have developed an efficient photocatalyst of bismuth-molybdate (Bi2MoO6) hierarchical hollow microspheres with tunable surface oxygen vacancies (OVs) for promoting the photocatalytic selective alcohol oxidation with H2O2 production. The effect of surface OVs on the photocatalytic efficiency is studied systematically by comparing the performance of different photocatalysts. The benzaldehyde and H2O2 production rates over the OV-rich Bi2MoO6 photocatalyst reach up to 1310 and 67.2 μmol g-1 h-1, respectively, which are 2.3 and 4.0 times those generated from the OV-poor Bi2MoO6 hollow microspheres. The roles of various active radicals in the photocatalytic reaction are probed by a series of controlled experiments and in situ ESR measurements, revealing that both superoxide radical (•O2-) and carbon-centered radical are the key active intermediates. The introduction of surface OVs on Bi2MoO6 hollow microspheres accelerates the separation and transfer of photo-generated charge carriers as well as enhances the adsorption and activation of reactant molecules, thereby greatly promoting the photocatalytic selective oxidation of alcohols along with H2O2 production. This work not only demonstrates a facile strategy for the preparation of high-efficiency photocatalysts by simultaneous modulations of morphology and surface defects, but also offers insight into developing the dual-functional photocatalytic reactions for the full utilizations of photoinduced electrons and holes.

Abstract
Black phosphorus (BP), an emerging remarkable photocatalytic semiconductor, is arousing strong interests in this field of solar-driven CO2 reduction, but its stability and activity are still facing huge challenges. Here, an ambient-stable and effective 2D/2D heterostructure of BP/bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) with oxygen vacancy is innovatively designed for syngas production via photocatalytic CO2 reduction. This work, not only resolves the stability problem of BP nanosheets by anchoring ultrasmall platinum (Pt) nanoparticles (∼2 nm) but also greatly improves the charge transfer efficiency by constructing S-scheme 2D/2D heterostructure with coupled oxygen defects. As a result, the generation rates of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2) remarkably reach 20.5 and 16.8 μmol g-1 h-1, respectively, which are much higher than that of reported BP-based materials, and the accomplished CO/H2 ratios (1:1-2:1) are exactly the most desirable syngas for industrial applications. Thus, this work constructs an efficient and ambient-stable BP-based photocatalyst for syngas production by CO2 reduction at mild conditions.

Abstract
The conversion of CO2 into new carbon-based products, such as fuels and chemicals, is an attractive and promising means of mitigating global energy needs and minimizing environmental damage. Although bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) as a photocatalyst can promote CO2 photoreduction, a systematic study for the development of a low-cost and efficient catalyst is needed. Thus, Bi2WO6 with different morphologies was successfully synthesized using the hydrothermal method. An experimental design was applied to investigate the effect of synthesis time and PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone) concentration on catalyst photocatalytic activity. Crystal structures, morphologies, optical absorption, and surface charges of the catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, UV-vis diffuse-reflection spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption, and zeta potential. All samples exhibited good performance for the photoreduction of CO2 into ethanol, and both time and PVP concentration were significant in the ethanol yield. Changes in synthesis conditions induced differences in catalyst characteristics, such as morphology, crystallinity, and, predominantly, surface area. Furthermore, PVP addition improved photocatalytic efficiency by up to 258% compared with results without the surfactant. The best sample, W-8h-10%, presented a flower-like morphology and ethanol yield of 68.9 μmol g-1 h-1.
