Abstract
Cyclic iron tetracarbenes are an emerging class of macrocyclic iron N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes. They can be considered as an organometallic compound class inspired by their heme analogs, however, their electronic properties differ, e.g. due to the very strong σ-donation of the four combined NHCs in equatorial coordination. The ligand framework of iron tetracarbenes can be readily modified, allowing fine-tuning of the structural and electronic properties of the complexes. The properties of iron tetracarbene complexes are discussed quantitatively and correlations are established. The electronic nature of the tetracarbene ligand allows the isolation of uncommon iron(III) and iron(IV) species and reveals a unique reactivity. Iron tetracarbenes are successfully applied in C-H activation, CO2 reduction, aziridination and epoxidation catalysis and mechanisms as well as decomposition pathways are described. This review will help researchers evaluate the structural and electronic properties of their complexes and target their catalyst properties through ligand design.

Abstract
ArIO (ArI = 2-(tBuSO2)C6H4I) is an oxidant used to oxidize FeII species to their FeIV-oxo state, enabling hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) and oxygen-atom transfer (OAT) reactions at low energy barriers. ArIO, as a ligand, generates masked Fen═O species of the type Fe(n-2)-OIAr. Herein, we used gas-phase ion-molecule reactions and DFT calculations to explore the properties of masked iron-oxo species and to understand their unmasking mechanisms. The theory shows that the I-O bond cleavage in [(TPA)FeIVO(ArIO)]2+ (12+, TPA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine)) is highly endothermic; therefore, it can be achieved only in collision-induced dissociation of 12+ leading to the unmasked iron(VI) dioxo complex. The reduction of 12+ by HAT leads to [(TPA)FeIIIOH(ArIO)]2+ with a reduced energy demand for the I-O bond cleavage but is, however, still endothermic. The exothermic unmasking of the Fe═O bond is predicted after one-electron reduction of 12+ or after OAT reactivity. The latter leads to the 4e- oxidation of unsaturated hydrocarbons: The initial OAT from [(TPA)FeIVO(ArIO)]2+ leads to the epoxidation of an alkene and triggers the unmasking of the second Fe═O bond still within one collisional complex. The second oxidation step starts with HAT from a C-H bond and follows with the rebound of the C-radical and the OH group. The process starting with the one-electron reduction could be studied with [(TQA)FeIVO(ArIO)]2+ (22+, TQA = tris(2-quinolylmethyl)amine)) because it has a sufficient electron affinity for electron transfer with alkenes. Accordingly, the reaction of 22+ with 2-carene leads to [(TQA)FeIIIO(ArIO)]2+ that exothermically eliminates ArI and unmasks the reactive FeV-dioxo species.

Abstract
High-valent iron-imido complexes can perform C-H activation and sulfimidation reactions, but are far less studied than the more ubiquitous iron-oxo species. As case studies, we have looked at a recently published iron(V)-imido ligand π-cation radical complex, which is formally an iron(VI)-imido complex [FeV (NTs)(TAML+. )] (1; NTs=tosylimido), and an iron(V)-imido complex [FeV (NTs)(TAML)]- (2). Using a theoretical approach, we found that they have multiple energetically close-lying electromers, sometimes even without changing spin states, reminiscent of the so-called Compound I in Cytochrome P450. When studying their reactivity theoretically, it is indeed found that their electronic structures may change to perform efficient oxidations, emulating the multi-spin state reactivity in FeIV O systems. This is actually in contrast to the known [FeV (O)(TAML)]- species (3), where the reactions occur only on the ground spin state. We also looked into the whole reaction pathway for the C-H bond activation of 1,4-cyclohexadiene by these intermediates to reproduce the experimentally observed products, including steps that usually attract no interest (neither theoretically nor experimentally) due to their non-rate-limiting status and fast reactivity. A new "clustering non-rebound mechanism" is presented for this C-H activation reaction.

Abstract
High-valent metal-oxo species have been characterised as key intermediates in both heme and non-heme enzymes that are found to perform efficient aliphatic hydroxylation, epoxidation, halogenation, and dehydrogenation reactions. Several biomimetic model complexes have been synthesised over the years to mimic both the structure and function of metalloenzymes. The diamond-core [Fe2(μ-O)2] is one of the celebrated models in this context as this has been proposed as the catalytically active species in soluble methane monooxygenase enzymes (sMMO), which perform the challenging chemical conversion of methane to methanol at ease. In this context, a report of open core [HO(L)FeIII-O-FeIV(O)(L)]2+ (1) gains attention as this activates C-H bonds a million-fold faster compared to the diamond-core structure and has the dual catalytic ability to perform hydroxylation as well as desaturation with organic substrates. In this study, we have employed density functional methods to probe the origin of the very high reactivity observed for this complex and also to shed light on how this complex performs efficient hydroxylation and desaturation of alkanes. By modelling fifteen possible spin-states for 1 that could potentially participate in the reaction mechanism, our calculations reveal a doublet ground state for 1 arising from antiferromagnetic coupling between the quartet FeIV centre and the sextet FeIII centre, which regulates the reactivity of this species. The unusual stabilisation of the high-spin ground state for FeIV[double bond, length as m-dash]O is due to the strong overlap of with the orbital, reducing the antibonding interactions via spin-cooperation. The electronic structure features computed for 1 are consistent with experiments offering confidence in the methodology chosen. Further, we have probed various mechanistic pathways for the C-H bond activation as well as -OH rebound/desaturation of alkanes. An extremely small barrier height computed for the first hydrogen atom abstraction by the terminal FeIV[double bond, length as m-dash]O unit was found to be responsible for the million-fold activation observed in the experiments. The barrier height computed for -OH rebound by the FeIII-OH unit is also smaller suggesting a facile hydroxylation of organic substrates by 1. A strong spin-cooperation between the two iron centres also reduces the barrier for second hydrogen atom abstraction, thus making the desaturation pathway competitive. Both the spin-state as well as spin-coupling between the two metal centres play a crucial role in dictating the reactivity for species 1. By exploring various mechanistic pathways, our study unveils the fact that the bridged μ-oxo group is a poor electrophile for both C-H activation as well for -OH rebound. As more and more evidence is gathered in recent years for the open core geometry of sMMO enzymes, the idea of enhancing the reactivity via an open-core motif has far-reaching consequences.

Abstract
High valent iron species are very reactive molecules involved in oxidation reactions of relevance to biology and chemical synthesis. Herein we describe iron(iv)-tosylimido complexes [FeIV(NTs)(MePy2tacn)](OTf)2 (1(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs) and [FeIV(NTs)(Me2(CHPy2)tacn)](OTf)2 (2(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs), (MePy2tacn = N-methyl-N,N-bis(2-picolyl)-1,4,7-triazacyclononane, and Me2(CHPy2)tacn = 1-(di(2-pyridyl)methyl)-4,7-dimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane, Ts = Tosyl). 1(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs and 2(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs are rare examples of octahedral iron(iv)-imido complexes and are isoelectronic analogues of the recently described iron(iv)-oxo complexes [FeIV(O)(L)]2+ (L = MePy2tacn and Me2(CHPy2)tacn, respectively). 1(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs and 2(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs are metastable and have been spectroscopically characterized by HR-MS, UV-vis, 1H-NMR, resonance Raman, Mössbauer, and X-ray absorption (XAS) spectroscopy as well as by DFT computational methods. Ferric complexes [FeIII(HNTs)(L)]2+, 1(III)-NHTs (L = MePy2tacn) and 2(III)-NHTs (L = Me2(CHPy2)tacn) have been isolated after the decay of 1(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs and 2(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs in solution, spectroscopically characterized, and the molecular structure of [FeIII(HNTs)(MePy2tacn)](SbF6)2 determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Reaction of 1(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs and 2(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs with different p-substituted thioanisoles results in the transfer of the tosylimido moiety to the sulphur atom producing sulfilimine products. In these reactions, 1(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs and 2(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs behave as single electron oxidants and Hammett analyses of reaction rates evidence that tosylimido transfer is more sensitive than oxo transfer to charge effects. In addition, reaction of 1(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs and 2(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs with hydrocarbons containing weak C-H bonds results in the formation of 1(III)-NHTs and 2(III)-NHTs respectively, along with the oxidized substrate. Kinetic analyses indicate that reactions proceed via a mechanistically unusual HAT reaction, where an association complex precedes hydrogen abstraction.

Abstract
Ruthenium(II) complexes bearing a tridentate bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) ligand reacted with iminoiodanes (PhI=NR) resulting in the formation of isolable ruthenium(III)-amido intermediates, which underwent cleavage of a C-N bond of the tridentate ligand and formation of an N-substituted imine group. The RuIII -amido intermediates have been characterized by 1 H NMR, UV/Vis, ESI-MS, and X-ray crystallography. DFT calculations were performed to provide insight into the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
The iron(II) complexes [Fe(L)(MeCN)3 ](SO3 CF3 )2 (L are two derivatives of tris(2-pyridyl)-based ligands) have been synthesized as models for cysteine dioxygenase (CDO). The molecular structure of one of the complexes exhibits octahedral coordination geometry and the Fe-Npy bond lengths [1.953(4)-1.972(4) Å] are similar to those in the Cys-bound FeII -CDO; Fe-NHis : 1.893-2.199 Å. The iron(II) centers of the model complexes exhibit relatively high FeIII/II redox potentials (E1/2 =0.988-1.380 V vs. ferrocene/ferrocenium electrode, Fc/Fc+ ), within the range for O2 activation and typical for the corresponding nonheme iron enzymes. The reaction of in situ generated [Fe(L)(MeCN)(SPh)]+ with excess O2 in acetonitrile (MeCN) yields selectively the doubly oxygenated phenylsulfinic acid product. Isotopic labeling studies using 18 O2 confirm the incorporation of both oxygen atoms of O2 into the product. Kinetic and preliminary DFT studies reveal the involvement of an FeIII peroxido intermediate with a rhombic S= 1 / 2 FeIII center (687-696 nm; g≈2.46-2.48, 2.13-2.15, 1.92-1.94), similar to the spectroscopic signature of the low-spin Cys-bound FeIII CDO (650 nm, g≈2.47, 2.29, 1.90). The proposed FeIII peroxido intermediates have been trapped, and the O-O stretching frequencies are in the expected range (approximately 920 and 820 cm-1 for the alkyl- and hydroperoxido species, respectively). The model complexes have a structure similar to that of the enzyme and structural aspects as well as the reactivity are discussed.

Abstract
Non-heme iron based halogenase enzymes promote selective halogenation of the sp3-C-H bond through iron(iv)-oxo-halide active species. During halogenation, competitive hydroxylation can be prevented completely in enzymatic systems. However, synthetic iron(iv)-oxo-halide intermediates often result in a mixture of halogenation and hydroxylation products. In this report, we have developed a new synthetic strategy by employing non-heme iron based complexes for selective sp3-C-H halogenation by overriding hydroxylation. A room temperature stable, iron(iv)-oxo complex, [Fe(2PyN2Q)(O)]2+ was directed for hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) from aliphatic substrates and the iron(ii)-halide [FeII(2PyN2Q)(X)]+ (X, halogen) was exploited in conjunction to deliver the halogen atom to the ensuing carbon centered radical. Despite iron(iv)-oxo being an effective promoter of hydroxylation of aliphatic substrates, the perfect interplay of HAA and halogen atom transfer in this work leads to the halogenation product selectively by diverting the hydroxylation pathway. Experimental studies outline the mechanistic details of the iron(iv)-oxo mediated halogenation reactions. A kinetic isotope study between PhCH3 and C6D5CD3 showed a value of 13.5 that supports the initial HAA step as the RDS during halogenation. Successful implementation of this new strategy led to the establishment of a functional mimic of non-heme halogenase enzymes with an excellent selectivity for halogenation over hydroxylation. Detailed theoretical studies based on density functional methods reveal how the small difference in the ligand design leads to a large difference in the electronic structure of the [Fe(2PyN2Q)(O)]2+ species. Both experimental and computational studies suggest that the halide rebound process of the cage escaped radical with iron(iii)-halide is energetically favorable compared to iron(iii)-hydroxide and it brings in selective formation of halogenation products over hydroxylation.

Abstract
This paper presents an accelerated ferrate(VI) (FeVIO42-, FeVI) oxidation of contaminants in 30 s by adding one-electron and two-electron transfer reductants (R(1) and R(2)). An addition of R(2) (e.g., NH2OH, AsIII, SeIV, PIII, and NO2-, and S2O32-) results in FeIV initially, while FeV is generated with the addition of R(1) (e.g., SO32-). R(2) additives, except S2O32-, show the enhanced oxidation of 20-40% of target contaminant, trimethoprim (TMP). Comparatively, enhanced oxidation of TMP was up to 100% with the addition of R(1) to FeVI. Interestingly, addition of S2O32- (i.e., R(2)) also achieves the enhanced oxidation to 100%. Removal efficiency of TMP depends on the molar ratio ([R(1)]:[FeVI] or [R(2)]:[FeVI]). Most of the reductants have the highest removal at molar ratio of ∼0.125. A FeVI-S2O32- system also oxidizes rapidly a wide range of organic contaminants (pharmaceuticals, pesticides, artificial sweetener, and X-ray contrast media) in water and real water matrices. FeV and FeIV as the oxidative species in the FeVI-S2O32--contaminant system are elucidated by determining removal of contaminants in oxygenated and deoxygenated water, applying probing agent, and identifying oxidized products of TMP and sulfadimethoxine (SDM) by FeVI-S2O32- systems. Significantly, elimination of SO2 from sulfonamide (i.e., SDM) is observed for the first time.
