Isolated and solvated chiroptical behavior in conformationally flexible butanamines

The nonresonant optical activity of two highly flexible aliphatic amines, (2R)-3-methyl-2-butanamine (R-MBA) and (2R)-(3,3)-dimethyl-2-butanamine (R-DMBA), has been probed under isolated and solvated conditions to examine the roles of conformational isomerism and to explore the influence of extrinsic perturbations. The optical rotatory dispersion (ORD) measured in six solvents presented uniformly negative rotatory powers over the 320-590 nm region, with the long-wavelength magnitude of chiroptical response growing nearly monotonically as the dielectric constant of the surroundings diminished. The intrinsic specific optical rotation,α λ T (in deg dm-1 [g/mL]-1 ), extracted for ambient vapor-phase samples of R-MBA [-11.031(98) and -2.29 (11)] and R-DMBA [-9.434 (72) and -1.350 (48)] at 355 and 633 nm were best reproduced by counterintuitive solvents of high polarity (yet low polarizability) like acetonitrile and methanol. Attempts to interpret observed spectral signatures quantitatively relied on the linear-response frameworks of density-functional theory (B3LYP, cam-B3LYP, and dispersion-corrected analogs) and coupled-cluster theory (CCSD), with variants of the polarizable continuum model (PCM) deployed to account for the effects of implicit solvation. Building on the identification of several low-lying equilibrium geometries (nine for R-MBA and three for R-DMBA), ensemble-averaged ORD profiles were calculated at T = 300 K by means of the independent-conformer ansatz, which enabled response properties predicted for the optimized structure of each isomer to be combined through Boltzmann-weighted population fractions derived from corresponding relative internal-energy or free-energy values, the latter of which stemmed from composite CBS-APNO and G4 analyses. Although reasonable accord between theory and experiment was realized for the isolated (vapor-phase) species, the solution-phase results were less satisfactory and tended to degrade progressively as the solvent polarity increased. These trends were attributed to solvent-mediated changes in structural parameters and energy metrics for the transition states that separate and putatively isolate the equilibrium conformations supported by the ground electronic potential-energy surface, with the resulting displacement of barrier locations and/or decrease of barrier heights compromising the underlying premise of the independent-conformer ansatz.

Rydberg state dynamics and fragmentation mechanism of N,N,N',N'-tetramethylmethylenediamine

The non-adiabatic relaxation processes and the fragmentation dynamics of Rydberg-excited N,N,N',N'-tetramethylmethylenediamine (TMMDA) are investigated using femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging and time-resolved mass spectroscopy. Excitation at 208 nm populates TMMDA in a charge-localized 3p state. Rapid internal conversion (IC) to 3s produces two charge-delocalized conformers with independent time constants and distinct population ratios. As the system explores the 3s potential surface, the structural evolution continues on a 1.55 ps timescale, followed by a slower (12.1 ps) relaxation to the ground state. A thorough comparison of the time-dependent mass and photoelectron spectra suggests that ionization out of the 3p state ends up with the parent ion, the vibrational energy of which is insufficient for the bond cleavage. On the contrary, by virtue of the additional energy acquired by IC from 3p, the internal energy deposited in 3s is available to break the C-N bond, leading to the fragment ion. The fragmentation is found to occur on the ion surface instead of the Rydberg surface.

Photochemical carbon-sulfur bond cleavage in thioethers mediated via excited state Rydberg-to-valence evolution

Time-resolved photoelectron imaging and supporting ab initio quantum chemistry calculations were used to investigate non-adiabatic excess energy redistribution dynamics operating in the saturated thioethers diethylsulfide, tetrahydrothiophene and thietane. In all cases, 200 nm excitation leads to molecular fragmentation on an ultrafast (<100 fs) timescale, driven by the evolution of Rydberg-to-valence orbital character along the S-C stretching coordinate. The C-S-C bending angle was also found to be a key coordinate driving initial internal conversion through the excited state Rydberg manifold, although only small angular displacements away from the ground state equilibrium geometry are required. Conformational constraints imposed by the cyclic ring structures of tetrahydrothiophene and thietane do not therefore influence dynamical timescales to any significant extent. Through use of a high-intensity 267 nm probe, we were also able to detect the presence of some transient (bi)radical species. These are extremely short lived, but they appear to confirm the presence of two competing excited state fragmentation channels - one proceeding directly from the initially prepared 4p manifold, and one involving non-adiabatic population of the 4s state. This is in addition to a decay pathway leading back to the S₀ electronic ground state, which shows an enhanced propensity in the 5-membered ring system tetrahydrothiophene over the other two species investigated.

The ultrafast vibronic dynamics of ammonia's D̃ state

Using vacuum-ultraviolet time-resolved velocity map imaging of photoelectrons, we study ultrafast coupled electronic and nuclear dynamics in low-lying Rydberg states of ammonia. Vibrationally-resolved internal vibrational relaxation (IVR) is observed in a progression of the e' bending modes. This vibrational progression is only observed in the D̃ state, and is lost upon ultrafast internal conversion to the C̃ and B̃ electronic states. Due to the ultrashort time scale of the internal conversion (ca. 64 fs), and the vibronic resolution, the non-adiabatic coupling vectors are identified and verified with ab initio calculations. The time-scale of this IVR process is highly surprising and significant because IVR is usually treated as an incoherent process that proceeds statistically, according to a "Fermi's Golden Rule"-like model, where the process scales with the available degrees of freedom. Here, we show that it can be highly non-statistical, restricted to only a very small subset of vibrational motions.

Spectroscopic application of few-femtosecond deep-ultraviolet laser pulses from resonant dispersive wave emission in a hollow capillary fibre

We exploit the phenomenon of resonant dispersive wave (RDW) emission in gas-filled hollow capillary fibres (HCFs) to realize time-resolved photoelectron imaging (TRPEI) measurements with an extremely short temporal resolution. By integrating the output end of an HCF directly into a vacuum chamber assembly we demonstrate two-colour deep ultraviolet (DUV)-infrared instrument response functions of just 10 and 11 fs at central pump wavelengths of 250 and 280 nm, respectively. This result represents an advance in the current state of the art for ultrafast photoelectron spectroscopy. We also present an initial TRPEI measurement investigating the excited-state photochemical dynamics operating in the N-methylpyrrolidine molecule. Given the substantial interest in generating extremely short and highly tuneable DUV pulses for many advanced spectroscopic applications, we anticipate our first demonstration will stimulate wider uptake of the novel RDW-based approach for studying ultrafast photochemistry - particularly given the relatively compact and straightforward nature of the HCF setup.

Non-adiabatic dynamics of Rydberg-excited diethylamine

Femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy was employed to investigate the ultrafast non-adiabatic dynamics of diethylamine (DEA). Following the direct excitations of the two main conformational structures (i.e., TT and TG) of DEA to the 3p Rydberg states at 200 nm, DEA undergoes internal conversion to the 3s state with ∼68 fs, which is similar to previously relaxation pathways of several secondary and tertiary amines. Subsequent dynamics on the 3s Rydberg state evolves along the NH stretching coordinate and is then accompanied by the breaking of the NH bond in about 120 fs, rather than the cleavage of the NC, or CC bonds as well as the conformational transformations between the TT and TG conformers on the 3s states. Theoretically, we reveal the pre-dissociative nσ* character evolving along the NH stretching coordinate within the 3s state as DEA dissociates to yield H atom products. As contrasted to the well-known conformational NC bond rotation motions in systems such as tertiary amines, the non-adiabatic relaxation of the 3s state of DEA is predominantly characterized by the NH bond dissociation process.

Arbitrary image reinflation: A deep learning technique for recovering 3D photoproduct distributions from a single 2D projection

Many charged particle imaging measurements rely on the inverse Abel transform (or related methods) to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) photoproduct distributions from a single two-dimensional (2D) projection image. This technique allows for both energy- and angle-resolved information to be recorded in a relatively inexpensive experimental setup, and its use is now widespread within the field of photochemical dynamics. There are restrictions, however, as cylindrical symmetry constraints on the overall form of the distribution mean that it can only be used with a limited range of laser polarization geometries. The more general problem of reconstructing arbitrary 3D distributions from a single 2D projection remains open. Here, we demonstrate how artificial neural networks can be used as a replacement for the inverse Abel transform and-more importantly-how they can be used to directly "reinflate" 2D projections into their original 3D distributions, even in cases where no cylindrical symmetry is present. This is subject to the simulation of appropriate training data based on known analytical expressions describing the general functional form of the overall anisotropy. Using both simulated and real experimental data, we show how our arbitrary image reinflation (AIR) neural network can be utilized for a range of different examples, potentially offering a simple and flexible alternative to more expensive and complicated 3D imaging techniques.

Ultrafast conformational dynamics of Rydberg-excited N-methyl piperidine

We have observed the ultrafast conformational dynamics of electronically excited N-methyl piperidine (NMP) using time-resolved Rydberg fingerprint spectroscopy. Optical excitation at various wavelengths ranging from 212 nm to 229 nm leads to the 3s or 3p Rydberg states and induces coherent oscillatory motions with periods of about 700 fs. These coherent motions survive the internal conversion from 3p to 3s but then dephase on a time scale of a few oscillations. Intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution on a picosecond time scale leads to an equilibrium between two conformeric structures that are separated in binding energy by 0.09 eV. Model calculations using the DFT-SIC method are in excellent agreement with the experiments and identify the conformers as the chair and twist structures of NMP. The analysis of the equilibrium parameters at long time delays as a function of excitation wavelength allows for the extraction of thermodynamic parameters for the conformeric transformation. We derive an enthalpy of the chair to twist reaction in the 3s excited state of 62 meV with an entropy of 19.70 J mol^-1 K^-1. An activation energy of 276 meV is also obtained with a kinetic model.

Nonstatistical Photoinduced Processes in Gaseous Organic Molecules

Processes that proceed in femtoseconds are usually referred to as being ultrafast, and they are investigated in experiments that involve laser pulses with femtosecond duration in so-called pump probe schemes, where a light pulse triggers a molecular process and a second light pulse interrogates the temporal evolution of the molecular population. The focus of this review is on the reactivity patterns that arise when energy is not equally distributed on all the available degrees of freedom as a consequence of the very short time scale in play and on how the localization of internal energy in a specific mode can be thought of as directing a process toward (or away from) a certain outcome. The nonstatistical aspects are illustrated with examples from photophysics and photochemistry for a range of organic molecules. The processes are initiated by a variety of nuclear motions that are all governed by the energy gradients in the Franck-Condon region. Essentially, the molecules will start to adapt to the new electronic environment on the excited state to eventually reach the equilibrium structure. It is this structural change that is enabling an ultrafast electronic transition in cases where the nuclear motion leads to a transition point with significant coupling between to electronic states and to ultrafast reaction if there is a coupling to a reactive mode at the transition point between the involved states. With the knowledge of the relation between electronic excitation and equilibrium structure, it is possible to predict how the nuclei move after excitation and often whether an ultrafast (and inherently nonstatistical) electronic transition or even a bond breakage will take place. In addition to the understanding of how nonstatistical photoinduced processes proceed from a given excited state, it has been found that randomization of the energy does not even always take place when the molecule takes part in processes that are normally considered statistical, such as for example nonradiative transitions between excited states. This means that energy can be localized in a specific degree of freedom on a state other than the one that is initially prepared. This is a finding that could kickoff the ultimate dream in applied photochemistry; namely light excitation that leads to the rupture of a specific bond.

Optical Activity in Saturated Cyclic Amines: Untangling the Roles of Nitrogen-Inversion and Ring-Puckering Dynamics

The dispersive optical activity of two saturated cyclic amines, (R)-2-methylpyrrolidine (R-2MPY) and (S)-2-methylpiperidine (S-2MPI), has been interrogated under isolated and solvated conditions to elucidate the roles of large-amplitude motion associated with nitrogen-center inversion and ring-puckering dynamics. Experimental optical rotatory dispersion profiles were almost mirror images of one another and displayed parallel solvent dependencies. Quantum-chemical analyses built on density-functional and coupled-cluster methods revealed four low-lying conformers for each molecule, which are distinguished by axial/equatorial orientations of their amino hydrogens and methyl substituents. Chiroptical signatures predicted for these species were combined through an independent-conformer ansatz to simulate the ensemble-averaged response, with a polarizable continuum model (PCM) being used to treat implicit solute-solvent interactions. The intrinsic behavior observed for isolated (gaseous) R-2MPY and S-2MPI was reproduced best by merging coupled-cluster (CCSD) estimates of rotatory powers with thermal population fractions deduced from complete basis set (CBS-APNO) free-energy calculations. Although prior claims of sizable chiroptical contributions arising from helically twisted (chiral) heterocyclic frameworks could be discounted, less satisfactory agreement between experiment and theory was realized for solution phases. Response properties sustained modest isomer-dependent changes in the presence of PCM solvation, but the corresponding energy metrics showed systematic trends, whereby structures having larger electric-dipole moments were stabilized preferentially in media of high polarity. Despite the fact that R-2MPY conformations were predicted to undergo a progressive reordering of their relative energies across the six solvents of interest, S-2MPI was found to exhibit more pronounced solvent-induced perturbations at long wavelengths (viz., in regions far removed from electronic resonances). Experimental results are discussed in terms of the distinct ring-puckering mechanisms for R-2MPY and S-2MPI, which are expected to be dominated by hindered pseudorotation among envelope/twist motifs and semi-inversion between chairlike antipodes, respectively.

Symmetry effects in internal conversion are studied by means of two isomeric cyclic tertiary aliphatic amines in a velocity map imaging (VMI) experiment on the femtosecond timescale. We conclude that lessening the symmetry of the molecule leads to loss of coherence after internal conversion between Rydberg states.

Perspective: Preservation of coherence in photophysical processes

Coherence is one of the most important phenomena in ultrafast sciences. We give our perspective on the terminology, observation, and preservation of coherence in photophysical processes with some glimpses to the past and some looking-head to what may pave the way for scaling one of the last bastions in ultrafast science, namely, that of mode specific chemistry where it will be possible to break any specific bond by tailoring the pulse, an accomplishment that obviously would be the dream of any chemist.

Coherence in nonradiative transitions: internal conversion in Rydberg-excited N-methyl and N-ethyl morpholine

The survival of coherent wavepacket motion during internal conversions is observed in relatively large molecules, N-methyl morpholine and N-ethyl morpholine, where standard models imply fast decoherence in a statistical limit.

Observation of multi-channel non-adiabatic dynamics in aniline derivatives using time-resolved photoelectron imaging

We present results from a recent time-resolved photoelectron imaging (TRPEI) study investigating the non-adiabatic relaxation dynamics of N,N-dimethylaniline (N,N-DMA) and 3,5-dimethylaniline (3,5-DMA) following excitation at 240 nm. Analysis of the experimental data is supported by ab initio coupled-cluster calculations evaluating excited state energies and the evolution of several excited state physical properties as a function of N–H/N–CH₃ bond extension – a critical reaction coordinate. The use of site-selective methylation brings considerable new insight to the existing body of literature concerning photochemical dynamics in the related system aniline at similar excitation wavelengths. The present work also builds on our own previous investigations in the same species at 250 nm. The TRPEI method provides highly differential energy- and angle-resolved data and, in particular, the temporal evolution of the photoelectron angular distributions afforded by the imaging approach offers much of the new dynamical information. In particular, we see no clear evidence of the second excited 2ππ* state non-adiabatically coupling to the lower-lying S₁(ππ*) state or the mixed Rydberg/valence S₂(3s/πσ*) state. This, in turn, potentially raises some unresolved questions about the overall nature of the dynamics operating in these systems, especially in regard to the 2ππ* state's ultimate fate. More generally, the findings for the aromatic systems N,N-DMA and 3,5-DMA, taken along with our recent TRPEI results for several aliphatic amine species, highlight interesting questions about the nature of electronic character evolution in mixed Rydberg-valence states as a function of certain key bond extensions and the extent of system conjugation. We begin exploring these ideas computationally for a systematically varied series of tertiary amines.
