Evolution of magnetism by rolling up hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets tailored with superparamagnetic nanoparticles

Preparation and characterization of the h-BN/Fe3O4/APTES-AMF/CuII nanocomposite as a new and efficient catalyst for the one-pot three-component synthesis of 2-amino-4-aryl(or heteroaryl)-7,7-dimethyl-5-oxo-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-chromene-3-carbonitriles

The intriguing features of surface-engineered hexagonal two-dimensional boron nitride (h-BN) nanostructures have captivated the immense interest of researchers working in the arena of materials science. Inspired by striking attributes exhibited by h-BN nanosheets as the support material, we devoted our efforts towards synthesizing a novel magnetically retrievable h-BN/Fe₃O₄/APTES-AMF/Cu^II catalytic system, which was then comprehensively characterized using various techniques including SEM, TEM, EDX, SEM-based elemental mapping, ED-XRF, AAS, XRD, FT-IR, VSM, XPS, TGA, and BET. Further, the catalytic potential of h-BN/Fe₃O₄/APTES-AMF/Cu^II nanocomposites was investigated in the one-pot multicomponent coupling reaction to gain access to a library of biologically active 2-amino-4-aryl(or heteroaryl)-7,7-dimethyl-5-oxo-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-chromene-3-carbonitriles under ambient conditions. In addition, the use of green solvent, facile magnetic recoverability, and reusability of up to six successive runs made this protocol environmentally benign and economical. This work throws light on the development of covalently functionalized 2D-BN nanostructure-based copper catalysts and establishes its significance in furnishing industrially demanding products that would pave the way towards sustainable chemistry.

Enhanced catalysis through structurally modified hybrid 2-D boron nitride nanosheets comprising of complexed 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone motif

Tuning the structural architecture of the pristine two dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets through rational surface engineering have proven advantageous in the fabrication of competent catalytic materials. Inspired by the performance of h-BN based nanomaterials in expediting key organic transformations, we channelized our research efforts towards engineering the inherent surface properties of the exclusively stacked h-BN nanosheets through the incorporation of a novel competent copper complex of a bidentate chelating ligand 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (BP). Delightfully, this hybrid nanomaterial worked exceptionally well in boosting the [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of azide and nitriles, providing a facile access to a diverse variety of highly bioactive tetrazole motifs. A deep insight into the morphology of the covalently crafted h-BN signified the structural integrity of the exfoliated h-BN@OH nanosheets that exhibited lamellar like structures possessing smooth edges and flat surface. This interesting morphology could also be envisioned to augment the catalysis by allowing the desired surface area for the reactants and thus tailoring their activity. The work paves the way towards rational design of h-BN based nanomaterials and adjusting their catalytic potential by the use of suitable complexes for promoting sustainable catalysis, especially in view of the fact that till date only a very few h-BN nanosheets based catalysts have been devised.

Application of Chemically Exfoliated Boron Nitride Nanosheets Doped with Co to Remove Organic Pollutants Rapidly from Textile Water

Two-dimensional layered materials doped with transition metals exhibit enhanced magnetization and improved catalytic stability during water treatment leading to potential environmental applications across several industrial sectors. In the present study, cobalt (Co)-doped boron nitride nanosheets (BN-NS) were explored for such an application. Chemical exfoliation process was used to exfoliate BN-NS and the hydrothermal route was adopted to incorporate Co dopant in various concentrations (e.g., 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 wt%). X-ray diffraction (XRD) study indicated that crystallinity improved upon doping with the formation of a hexagonal phase of the synthesized material. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) confirmed enhanced crystallinity, which corroborates XRD results. Interlayer spacing was evaluated through a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) equipped with Gatan digital micrograph software. Compositional and functional group analysis was undertaken with energy dispersive X-ray (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, respectively. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and HR-TEM were utilized to probe surface morphologies of prepared samples. Bonding modes in the sample were identified through Raman analysis. Optical properties were examined using UV-vis spectroscopy. Photoluminescence spectra were acquired to estimate the separation and recombination of excitons. Magnetic properties were studied by means of hysteresis loop acquired using VSM measurements. Methylene blue dye was degraded with as-prepared host and doped nanosheets used as catalysts and investigated through absorption spectra ranging from 250 to 800 nm. The experimental results of this study indicate that Co-doped BN-NS showed enhanced magnetic properties and can be used to degrade dyes present as an effluent in industrial wastewater.

A facile and general approach for production of nanoscrolls with high-yield from two-dimensional nanosheets

Nanoscrolls (NSs) assembled from two-dimensional nanosheets have emerged as a novel type of one-dimensional nanomaterials because of their unique topological features and properties. The scale-up preparation of the NSs is crucial for their foundational and applied research. Herein, we report a general and straightforward approach for efficiently converting two-dimensional nanosheets into the NSs with high yield. We demonstrated the converting process by illustrating the formation of the graphene nanoscrolls through characterizing their morphology and structure using a scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, Raman spectra, and X-ray diffraction spectra. The graphene sheets with a few-lay number were converted immediately and entirely into the graphene nanoscrolls when they mixed with an ethanol solution of silver nitrate at room temperature. The as-prepared graphene nanoscrolls were confirmed to be formed via the layer-by-layer assembly of graphene triggered by silver cyanide formed in site. Also, we extended this approach to construct the nanoscrolls of the hexagonal boron nitride, molybdenum disulfide, and tungsten disulfide, respectively, from their corresponding two-dimensional nanomaterials. In a broader context, this approach paves a significant new way for the large production of the NSs with cost-efficiency.

Fabrication and application of BN nanoparticles, nanosheets and their nanohybrids

Smart implementation of novel advanced nanomaterials is the key for the solution of many complex problems of modern science. In recent years, there has been a great interest in the synthesis and application of boron nitride (BN) nanotubes because of their unique physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. By contrast, the synthesis, characterization and exploration of other morphological types of BN nanostructure - BN nanoparticles and BN nanosheets - have received less attention. However, the detailed investigations on advantages of every morphological BN type for specific applications have only recently been started. One of the promising directions is the utilization of BN-based nanohybrids. This review is dedicated to the in-depth analysis of recently published works on the fabrication and application of BN nanoparticles, nanosheets, and their nanohybrids. It covers a variety of developed synthetic methods toward fabrication of such nanostructures, and their specific application potentials in catalysis, drug delivery, tribology and structural materials. Finally, the review focuses on the theoretical aspects of this quickly emerging field.

Continuous flow synthesis of phosphate binding h-BN@magnetite hybrid material

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is rendered magnetically responsive in aqueous media by binding superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles 8.5–18.5 nm in diameter on the surface. The composite material was generated under continuous flow in water in a dynamic thin film in a vortex fluidic device (VFD) with the source of iron generated by laser ablation of a pure iron metal target in the air above the liquid using a Nd:YAG pulsed laser operating at 1064 nm and 360 mJ. Optimum operating parameters of the VFD were a rotational speed of 7.5k rpm for the 20 mm OD (17.5 mm ID) borosilicate glass tube inclined at 45 degrees, with a h-BN concentration at 0.1 mg mL⁻¹, delivered at 1.0 mL min⁻¹ using a magnetically stirred syringe to keep the h-BN uniformly dispersed in water prior to injection into the base of the rapidly rotating tube. The resulting composite material, containing 5.75% weight of iron, exhibited high phosphate ion adsorption capacity, up to 171.2 mg PO₄³⁻ per gram Fe, which was preserved on recycling the material five times.
