Unlocking catalytic potential: a rhodium(II)-based coordination polymer for efficient carbene transfer reactions with donor/acceptor diazoalkanes

Herein, we report the use of a molecular-defined rhodium(II) coordination polymer (Rh-CP) as a heterogeneous, recyclable catalyst in carbene transfer reactions. We showcase the application of this heterogeneous catalyst in a range of carbene transfer reactions and conclude with the functionalization of natural products and drug molecules.

Self-Supported Chiral Dirhodium Organic Frameworks Enables Efficient Asymmetric Cyclopropanation

The development of heterogeneous chiral dirhodium catalysts for fabricating important bioactive substances and reducing the loss of noble metals has long been of significant interest. However, there still remains formidable synthetic challenges since it requires multiple steps of the synthetic process, and rhodium is easily leached from solid materials during the reaction. Here, we demonstrated a self-supported strategy based on the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction to construct two chiral dirhodium organic frameworks for heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis. The synthetic approach is simple and efficient since it requires only a small number of preparation steps and does not require any catalyst supporting materials. The obtained chiral dirhodium materials can be highly efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalysts for asymmetric cyclopropanation between diazooxindole and alkenes. Importantly, Rh2-MOCP-2 exhibited almost similar catalytic performance compared to homogeneous catalyst Rh2(S-Br-NTTL)4. The afforded catalytic performance (93.9% yield with 80.9% ee) highly surpasses previous heterogeneous dirhodium catalysts reported to date.

In-situ Kinetic Studies of Rh(II)-Catalyzed C-H Functionalization to Achieve High Catalyst Turnover Numbers

Detailed kinetic studies on the functionalization of unactivated hydrocarbon sp3 C-H bonds by dirhodium-catalyzed reaction of aryldiazoacetates revealed that the C-H functionalization step is rate-determining. The efficiency of this step was increased by using the hydrocarbon as solvent and using donor/acceptor carbenes with an electron-withdrawing substituent on the aryl donor group. The optimum catalyst for these reactions is the tetraphenylphthalimido derivative Rh2(R-TPPTTL)4 and a further beneficial refinement was obtained by using N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide as an additive. Under the optimum conditions with a catalyst loading of 0.001 mol %, effective enantioselective C-H functionalization (66-97% yield, 83-97% ee) was achieved of cycloalkanes with a range of aryldiazoacetates as long as the aryldiazoacetate was not to sterically demanding. The reaction with cyclohexane using a catalyst loading of 0.0005 mol % could be recharged twice with additional aryldiazoacetate, resulting in an overall dirhodium catalyst turnover number of 580,000.

Self-Adaptive Dirhodium Complexes in a Metal-Organic Framework for Synthesis of N-H Aziridines

Conformational dynamics of active sites in enzymes enable great control over the catalytic process. Herein, we constructed a metal-organic framework with conformationally dynamic active sites (Rh₂-ZIF-8). The active sites in Rh₂-ZIF-8 were composed of the imidazolate-bridged bimetallic center with a catalytic dirhodium moiety and structural zinc site. Even though the coordination sphere of the dirhodium species was saturated with two circularly arranged esp groups and two axial 2-MeIm ligands, it could still effectively catalyze the direct synthesis of N-H aziridines from olefins with high activity. We found that such a self-adaptive catalytic process was based on the dynamic breakage and reformation of the rhodium-zinc imidazolate bridges. Interestingly, the in situ generated dirhodium site with a unique Rh₂(esp)₂(2-MeIm)₁ configuration was able to exhibit obviously enhanced selectivity compared to homogeneous catalyst Rh₂(esp)₂. Furthermore, the surrounding zinc imidazolate groups could effectively protect the dirhodium moieties from harsh environments, and this ultimately endowed it with high stability.

Rhodium-Based Metal-Organic Polyhedra Assemblies for Selective CO2 Photoreduction

Heterogenization of molecular catalysts via their immobilization within extended structures often results in a lowering of their catalytic properties due to a change in their coordination sphere. Metal-organic polyhedra (MOP) are an emerging class of well-defined hybrid compounds with a high number of accessible metal sites organized around an inner cavity, making them appealing candidates for catalytic applications. Here, we demonstrate a design strategy that enhances the catalytic properties of dirhodium paddlewheels heterogenized within MOP (Rh-MOP) and their three-dimensional assembled supramolecular structures, which proved to be very efficient catalysts for the selective photochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to formic acid. Surprisingly, the catalytic activity per Rh atom is higher in the supramolecular structures than in its molecular sub-unit Rh-MOP or in the Rh-metal-organic framework (Rh-MOF) and yields turnover frequencies of up to 60 h^-1 and production rates of approx. 76 mmole formic acid per gram of the catalyst per hour, unprecedented in heterogeneous photocatalysis. The enhanced catalytic activity is investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical characterization, showing that self-assembly into supramolecular polymers increases the electron density on the active site, making the overall reaction thermodynamically more favorable. The catalyst can be recycled without loss of activity and with no change of its molecular structure as shown by pair distribution function analysis. These results demonstrate the high potential of MOP as catalysts for the photoreduction of CO₂ and open a new perspective for the electronic design of discrete molecular architectures with accessible metal sites for the production of solar fuels.

Dirhodium-Based Supramolecular Framework Catalyst for Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution

The direct conversion of solar energy to clean fuels as alternatives to fossil fuels is an important approach for addressing the global energy shortage and environmental problems. Here, we introduce a new dirhodium-complex-based framework assembly as a heterogeneous molecule-based photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution using visible light. Two dirhodium complexes bearing visible-light-harvesting BODIPY (boron dipyrromethene, BDP) moieties were newly designed and synthesized. The obtained complexes were self-assembled to framework structures (supramolecular framework catalysts), which are stabilized intermolecular noncovalent interactions. These frameworks retained excellent visible-light-harvesting properties of BDP moieties. Investigation of the catalytic performance of the supramolecular framework catalysts revealed that the supramolecular framework catalyst with heavy atoms at BDP moieties exhibited excellent performance in the formation of hydrogen with a reaction rate of 275.8 μmol g^-1 h^-1 under irradiation of visible light, whereas the supramolecular framework catalyst without heavy atoms at BDP moieties was inactive. Moreover, the system has the additional benefits of high durability (up to 96 h), reusability, and facile removal from the reaction mixture. We also disclosed the effect of heavy atoms at BDP moieties on the catalytic activity and proposed a reaction mechanism.

Mechanism of Heterogenization of Dirhodium Catalysts: Insights from DFT Calculations

Dirhodium(II) complexes such as [Rh₂(TFA)₄] bound to a functionalized mesoporous SBA-15 carrier material have proven to be valuable candidates for heterogeneous catalysis in the field of pharmaceutical synthesis. However, the mechanistic steps of immobilization by linker molecules containing carboxyl or amine functionalities remain the subject of discussion. Here we present a theoretical study of possible mechanistic binding pathways for the [Rh₂(TFA)₄] complex through model representations of synthetically investigated linkers, namely n-butylamine and n-butyric acid. Experimentally proposed intermediates of the immobilization process are investigated and analyzed by density functional theory calculations to gain insights into structural properties and the influence of solvation. An evaluation of the thermodynamic data for all identified intermediates allowed distinguishing between two possible reaction pathways that are characterized by a first axial complexation of either n-butyric acid or n-butylamine. In agreement with results from NMR spectroscopy, singly or doubly n-butylamine-fixated complexes were found to present possible immobilization products. Initial binding through a carboxy-functionalized linker is proposed as the most favorable reaction pathway for the formation of the mixed linker pattern [Rh₂(TFA)₃]·(n-butylamine)·(n-butyrate). The linkers n-butyric acid and n-butyrate, respectively, are found to exhibit an unaltered binding affinity to the dirhodium complex despite their protonation states, indicating invariance to the acidic environment unlike an immobilization by n-butylamine. These results present a theoretical framework for the rationalization of observed product distributions while also providing inspiration and guidance for the preparation of functionalized heterogeneous SBA-15/dirhodium catalyst systems.

Design and characterization of novel dirhodium coordination polymers – the impact of ligand size on selectivity in asymmetric cyclopropanation

Novel dirhodium coordination polymers are synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. The catalysts exhibit good stability and excellent catalytic performance and selectivity in the cyclopropanation of diazooxindoles.

Dirhodium Coordination Polymers for Asymmetric Cyclopropanation of Diazooxindoles with Olefins: Synthesis and Spectroscopic Analysis

A facile approach is reported for the preparation of dirhodium coordination polymers [Rh₂ (L1)₂ ]_n (Rh₂ -L1) and [Rh₂ (L2)₂ ]_n (Rh₂ -L2; L1=N,N'-(pyromellitoyl)-bis-L-phenylalanine diacid anion, L2=bis-N,N'-(L-phenylalanyl) naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylate diimide) from chiral dicarboxylic acids by ligand exchange. Multiple techniques including FTIR, XPS, and ¹ H→¹³ C CP MAS NMR spectroscopy reveal the formation of the coordination polymers. ¹⁹ F MAS NMR was utilized to investigate the remaining TFA groups in the obtained coordination polymers, and demonstrated near-quantitative ligand exchange. DR-UV-vis and XPS confirm the oxidation state of the Rh center and that the Rh-single bond in the dirhodium node is maintained in the synthesis of Rh₂ -L1 and Rh₂ -L2. Both coordination polymers exhibit excellent catalytic performance in the asymmetric cyclopropanation reaction between styrene and diazooxindole. The catalysts can be easily recycled and reused without significant reduction in their catalytic efficiency.
