Sustainable production and applications of metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become a hot spot in the area of functional materials and have undergone rapid development in a wide range of fields in the 21st century. However, the scalable application of MOFs is still constrained by high production cost at the front end. Additionally, systematic discussion of the reuse of spent MOFs is lacking. Encouragingly, an increasing number of studies have been focusing on the low-cost production and recycling of MOF-based materials, providing feasible solutions for resource recovery and reduction. To stimulate future enthusiasm and interest in realizing the blue economy of MOFs, ranging from front-end production to terminal disposal, we have presented and summarized the state-of-the-art progress in the sustainable synthesis, separation, and reuse of MOFs. Based on the existing challenges, we also propose fit-for-purpose future directions in the MOF field to move toward blue economy.

Applications of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) based nanostructured materials: A review

While polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has enjoyed widespread use, a large volume of plastic waste has also been produced as a result, which is detrimental to the environment. Traditional treatment of plastic waste, such as landfilling and incinerating waste, causes environmental pollution and poses risks to public health. Recycling PET waste into useful chemicals or upcycling the waste into high value-added materials can be remedies. This review first provides a brief introduction of the synthesis, structure, properties, and applications of virgin PET. Then the conversion process of waste PET into high value-added materials for different applications are introduced. The conversion mechanisms (including degradation, recycling and upcycling) are detailed. The advanced applications of these upgraded materials in energy storage devices (supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, and microbial fuel cells), and for water treatment (to remove dyes, heavy metals, and antibiotics), environmental remediation (for air filtration, CO2 adsorption, and oil removal) and catalysis (to produce H2, photoreduce CO2, and remove toxic chemicals) are discussed at length. In general, this review details the exploration of advanced technologies for the transformation of waste PET into nanostructured materials for various applications, and provides insights into the role of high value-added waste products in sustainability and economic development.

Co-based metal-organic frameworks synthesized from poly(ethylene terephthalate) waste plastics for rapid detection of p-phenylenediamine

The environmental issues and health problems of waste plastics have attracted remarkable attention. It is quite important to convert waste plastics into high value-added electrochemical materials. Herein, four kinds of Co-based metal-organic frameworks (CoMOFs) were synthesized from poly(ethylene terephthalate) plastic, and their electrochemical applications were examined. A mixture of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and H2O was used as the solvent, and hydrothermal reaction was employed. It is found that the surface area and porous structure of CoMOFs are closely related to the volume ratio of DMF/H2O. As a result, the prepared CoMOFs exhibit different catalytic enhancement activities toward the oxidation of p-phenylenediamine (PPD). Based on the solvent-controlled sensing performance of CoMOFs, a highly sensitive and rapid detection method has been developed for PPD, with a linear range from 0.05 to 8.0 μM. The detection limit was 45 nM, and the practical application in hair dye samples was successfully demonstrated.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for energy production and gaseous fuel and electrochemical energy storage applications

The increasing energy demands in society and industrial sectors have inspired the search for alternative energy sources that are renewable and sustainable, also driving the development of clean energy storage and delivery systems. Various solid-state materials (e.g., oxides, sulphides, polymer and conductive nanomaterials, activated carbon and their composites) have been developed for energy production (water splitting-H2 production), gaseous fuel (H2 and CH4) storage and electrochemical energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors) applications. Nevertheless, the low surface area, pore volume and conductivity, and poor physical and chemical stability of the reported materials have resulted in higher requirements and challenges in the development of energy production and energy storage technologies. Thus, to overcome these issues, the development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted significant attention. MOFs are a class of porous materials with extremely high porosity and surface area, structural diversity, multifunctionality, and chemical and structural stability, and thus they can be used in a wide range of applications. In the present review, we precisely discuss the interesting properties of MOFs and the various methodologies for their synthesis, and also the future dependence on the valorization of solid waste for the recovery of metals and organic ligands for the synthesis of new classes of MOFs. Subsequently, the utilization of these interesting characteristics for energy production (water splitting), storage of gaseous fuels (H2 and CH4), and electrochemical storage (batteries and supercapacitors) applications are described. However, although MOFs are efficient materials with versatile uses, they still have many challenges, limiting their practical applications. Therefore, finally, we highlight the challenges associated with MOFs and show the way forward in overcoming them for the development of these highly porous materials with large-scale practical utility.

MIL-53(Al) assisted in upcycling plastic bottle waste into nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon for high-performance supercapacitors

Disposable aluminum cans and plastic bottles are common wastes found in modern societies. This article shows that they can be upcycled into functional materials, such as metal-organic frameworks and hierarchical porous carbon nanomaterials for high-value applications. Through a solvothermal method, used poly(ethylene terephthalate) bottles and aluminum cans are converted into MIL-53(Al). Subsequently, the as-prepared MIL-53(Al) can be further carbonized into a nitrogen-doped (4.52 at%) hierarchical porous carbon framework. With an optical amount of urea present during the carbonization process, the carbon nanomaterial of a high specific surface area of 1324 m2 g-1 with well-defined porosity can be achieved. These features allow the nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon to perform impressively as the working electrode of supercapacitors, delivering a high specific capacitance of 355 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 in a three-electrode cell and exhibiting a high energy density of 20.1 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 225 W kg-1, while simultaneously maintaining 88.2% capacitance retention over 10,000 cycles in two-electrode system. This work demonstrates the possibility of upcycling wastes to obtain carbon-based high-performance supercapacitors.

Enabling simultaneous valorization of tannery effluent and waste plastic via sustainable preparation of Cr-BDC MOFs for water adsorption

Advanced materials undergo a complex and lengthy process of maturation for scaling up and deployment, mainly due to the high cost of their precursors. Therefore, it is highly desirable to fabricate highly valuable advanced porous solid-state materials, with proven applicability, by sustainably combining organic and inorganic waste materials as precursors. This study successfully demonstrates the preparation of Cr-terephthalate Metal-Organic Frameworks (Cr-BDC MOFs) by combining metal salt and organic linker extracted from tannery effluent and waste plastic bottles. The waste from tanneries was used as the source of Cr(III), while terephthalic acid was obtained from the alkaline hydrolysis of plastic bottles. Appropriate extraction and assembly processes led to the functional Cr-BDC MOFs, MIL-101(Cr) and MIL-53(Cr). The prepared MOFs showed similar properties (surface area, hydrolytic and thermal stability, and water adsorption performance) to similar MOFs synthesized from pure commercial-grade precursors, as confirmed by N2 sorption, XRD, TGA, and water adsorption experiments. The advancements made in this study represent significant progress in overcoming the bottleneck of MOF production cost efficiency via applying sustainability principles and pave the way for easy scaling-up and maturation of MOF-based processes, for air dehumidification and water harvesting as a case study.

Metal-organic frameworks and plastic: an emerging synergic partnership

Mismanagement of plastic waste results in its ubiquitous presence in the environment. Despite being durable and persistent materials, plastics are reduced by weathering phenomena into debris with a particle size down to nanometers. The fate and ecotoxicological effects of these solid micropollutants are not fully understood yet, but they are raising increasing concerns for the environment and people's health. Even if different current technologies have the potential to remove plastic particles, the efficiency of these processes is modest, especially for nanoparticles. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline nano-porous materials with unique properties, have unique properties, such as strong coordination bonds, large and robustus porous structures, high accessible surface areas and adsorption capacity, which make them suitable adsorbent materials for micropollutants. This review examines the preliminary results reported in literature indicating that MOFs are promising adsorbents for the removal of plastic particles from water, especially when MOFs are integrated in porous composite materials or membranes, where they are able to assure high removal efficiency, superior water flux and antifouling properties, even in the presence of other dissolved co-pollutants. Moreover, a recent trend for the alternative preparation of MOFs starting from plastic waste, especially polyethylene terephthalate, as a sustainable source of organic linkers is also reviewed, as it represents a promising route for mitigating the impact of the costs deriving from the widescale MOFs production and application. This connubial between MOFs and plastic has the potential to contribute at implementing a more effective waste management and the circular economy principles in the polymer life cycle.

UiO-66 metal organic frameworks with high contents of flexible adipic acid co-linkers

Adipic acid, an industrially-important chemical that can be sustainably derived from biomass and post-consumer nylon, is traditionally overlooked as a linker for MOFs. Herein, we report the first direct one-pot method for synthesising UiO-66 MOFs with an unprecedented 69 mol% adipate content, as well as the feasibility of these materials for MOF defect engineering by rapid and selective adipate thermolysis.

The coming of age of water channels for separation membranes: from biological to biomimetic to synthetic

Water channels are one of the key pillars driving the development of next-generation desalination and water treatment membranes. Over the past two decades, the rise of nanotechnology has brought together an abundance of multifunctional nanochannels that are poised to reinvent separation membranes with performances exceeding those of state-of-the-art polymeric membranes within the water-energy nexus. Today, these water nanochannels can be broadly categorized into biological, biomimetic and synthetic, owing to their different natures, physicochemical properties and methods for membrane nanoarchitectonics. Furthermore, against the backdrop of different separation mechanisms, different types of nanochannel exhibit unique merits and limitations, which determine their usability and suitability for different membrane designs. Herein, this review outlines the progress of a comprehensive amount of nanochannels, which include aquaporins, pillar[5]arenes, I-quartets, different types of nanotubes and their porins, graphene-based materials, metal- and covalent-organic frameworks, porous organic cages, MoS₂, and MXenes, offering a comparative glimpse into where their potential lies. First, we map out the background by looking into the evolution of nanochannels over the years, before discussing their latest developments by focusing on the key physicochemical and intrinsic transport properties of these channels from the chemistry standpoint. Next, we put into perspective the fabrication methods that can nanoarchitecture water channels into high-performance nanochannel-enabled membranes, focusing especially on the distinct differences of each type of nanochannel and how they can be leveraged to unlock the as-promised high water transport potential in current mainstream membrane designs. Lastly, we critically evaluate recent findings to provide a holistic qualitative assessment of the nanochannels with respect to the attributes that are most strongly valued in membrane engineering, before discussing upcoming challenges to share our perspectives with researchers for pathing future directions in this coming of age of water channels.

A facile and sustainable one-pot approach to the aqueous and low-temperature PET-to-UiO-66(Zr) upcycling

Accelerating waste management requires the conversion of polymer waste to value-added materials through sustainable approaches. While depolymerised PET has been used as feedstock to produce metal-organic frameworks, this is the first report of the successful one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of the desirable UiO-66 topology through the judicious choice of reactants, modulators and reaction conditions.

Influence of Pore Structure and Metal-Node Geometry on the Polymerization of Ethylene over Cr-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received increasing interest as solid single-site catalysts, owing to their tunable pore architecture and metal node geometry. The ability to exploit these modulators makes them prominent candidates for producing polyethylene (PE) materials with narrow dispersity index (Ð) values. Here a study is presented in which the ethylene polymerization properties, with Et2 AlCl as activator, of three renowned Cr-based MOFs, MIL-101(Cr)-NDC (NDC=2,6-dicarboxynapthalene), MIL-53(Cr) and HKUST-1(Cr), are systematically investigated. Ethylene polymerization reactions revealed varying catalytic activities, with MIL-101(Cr)-NDC and MIL-53(Cr) being significantly more active than HKUST-1(Cr). Analysis of the PE products revealed large Ð values, demonstrating that polymerization occurs over a multitude of active Cr centers rather than a singular type of Cr site. Spectroscopic experiments, in the form of powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD), UV/Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and CO probe molecule Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy corroborated these findings, indicating that indeed for each MOF unique active sites are generated, however without alteration of the original oxidation state. Furthermore, the pXRD experiments indicated that one major prerequisite for catalytic activity was the degree of MOF activation by the Et2 AlCl co-catalyst, with the more active materials portraying a larger degree of activation.

Al-Doped magnetite encapsulated in mesoporous carbon: a long-lasting Fenton catalyst for CWPO of phenol in a fixed-bed reactor under mild conditions

Al substituted magnetite was identified as a promising heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for CWPO of 200 ppm phenol in a continuous system under mild conditions (pH 5, 40 °C, 0.1 ml min−1, 1.2S H2O2) for 500 h with 80% TOC conversion, 1 ppm Fe leaching.

Preparation of value-added metal-organic frameworks for high-performance liquid chromatography. Towards green chromatographic columns

This work applies the concepts of green chemistry, where polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles were used as the acid-dicarboxylic linker source for the synthesis of MIL-53(Al) metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and then used as a stationary phase for the separation of various solutes and compared with MIL-53(Al) synthesized from traditional terephthalic acid. Both synthesized MIL-53(Al) MOFs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), FT-IR, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and specific surface area analysis. Eight groups of standard analytes in addition to real samples were tested to evaluate the separation performance of the MIL-53(Al) packed columns in HPLC under various chromatographic conditions. Based on elution order of the studied compounds and the effects of mobile phase composition, the working mechanism was reversed phase mode in the presence of size-exclusion effects for large molecules, which exceeded the dynamic diameter of MIL-53(Al) (~7.6 Å). The effects of stationary phase sieving, mobile phase flow rate and composition, injected sample mass, and temperature were investigated relative to the chromatographic behavior of MIL-53(Al). MIL-53(Al) particle sieving before packing reduced peak broadening and significantly enhanced the chromatographic performance of the prepared columns up to 2.26 times relative to the number of theoretical plates. The MIL-53(Al) packed columns offered high-resolution separation for all studied mixtures with R_s >2 and good stability and long-term durability. At optimal conditions, the prepared columns exhibited efficiencies between 5600-63200 plates m^-1. Higher efficiencies were observed for alkylbenzenes and polyaromatic hydrocarbons as the organic linker in the MIL-53(Al) structure, which improved retention and separation of aromatics through π-π interactions. Thermodynamic parameters including ΔH, ΔS, and ΔG for the transfer of analyte from the mobile phase to the MIL-53(Al) stationary phase were studied. Compared with previously cited MOFs packed columns, the present MIL-53(Al) columns gave comparable selectivity and much better efficiency for most of the studied chemicals at optimum conditions, indicating the feasibility of MIL-53(Al) as a stationary phase for HPLC applications.

Application of MIL-53(Al) prepared from waste materials for solid-phase microextraction of propranolol followed by corona discharge-ion mobility spectrometry (CD-IMS)

In this study, MIL-53(Al) metal-organic framework was prepared from waste raw materials. A polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottle was used as the source of terephthalic acid, and an aluminium beverage can was applied as the precursor of aluminium salt. The activated MIL-53(Al) was immobilized onto a stainless steel probe of the ion mobility spectrometer (IMS), and the coated probe was used for solid-phase microextraction of propranolol from biological samples before determination. The effect of the different parameters such as pH, ionic strength, and stirring rate of the sample, extraction time, and temperature was studied on the extraction efficiency of propranolol. The linearity was obtained ranging from 5-200 μg L^-1 with a determination coefficient (R²) of 0.9988, and the detection limit was calculated 1.7 μg L^-1 in the water sample. The relative standard deviations of the method were in the range of 2.5-12.2 %. Finally, the method was utilized for determination of propranolol in the tablet sample.

Combining Organic and Inorganic Wastes to Form Metal-Organic Frameworks

This paper reports a simple method to recycle plastic-bottle and Li-ion-battery waste in one process by forming valuable coordination polymers (metal–organic frameworks, MOFs). Poly(ethylene terephthalate) from plastic bottles was depolymerized to produce an organic ligand source (terephthalate), and Li-ion batteries were dissolved as a source of metals. By mixing both dissolution solutions together, selective precipitation of an Al-based MOF, known as MIL-53 in the literature, was observed. This material can be recovered in large quantities from waste and presents similar properties of purity and porosity to as-synthesis MIL-53. This work illustrates the opportunity to form hybrid porous materials by combining different waste streams, laying the foundations for an achievable integrated circular economy from different waste cycle treatments (for batteries and plastics).

Engineering Metal-Organic Framework Catalysts for C-C and C-X Coupling Reactions: Advances in Reticular Approaches from 2014-2018

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of crystalline porous materials that have been actively used for several industrial and synthetic applications. MOFs are spatially and geometrically extrapolated coordination polymers with intriguing properties such as tunable porosity and dimensionality. In terms of their catalytic efficiency, MOFs combine the easy recoverability of heterogeneous catalysts with the increased selectivity of biological catalysts. It is therefore not surprising that a lot of work on optimizing MOF catalysts for organic transformations has been carried out over the past decade. In this review, recent developments in MOF catalysis are summarized, with special attention being paid to C-C, C-N, and C-O coupling reactions. The influence of pore size, pore environment, and load on catalytic activity is described. Post-synthetic stabilization techniques and host-guest interactions in caged MOF scaffolds are detailed. Mechanistic aspects pertaining to the use of MOFs in asymmetric heterogeneous catalysis are highlighted and categorized.

Photo-Fenton abatement of aqueous organics using metal-organic frameworks: An advancement from benchmark zeolite

A new and environmentally benign photocatalyst is introduced in this study, which was synthesized via incipient wetness impregnation onto MIL-47(V) using an ethanolic Fe(III) chloride solution. The resultant materials were characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, and HR-TEM analyses. The photocatalytic capability of Fe/MIL-47 towards removal of methylene blue (MB) was evaluated in comparison to MIL-53(Al), Cu/MIL-47, and Fe/zeolite-Y. The unmodified MIL-47 achieved 55% MB removal after 20-min exposure to UV/H₂O₂, through photodegradation as the dominant mechanism. Incorporation of Fe species into MIL-47 significantly increased the MB removal rate by 2.4-fold and accomplished nearly complete removal (98.2%) in 60 min, outcompeting the performance of Cu/MIL-47 and Fe/zeolite-Y. Based on the results of XRD, the impregnation of Fe retained the crystalline characteristics of MIL-47. The significance of temperature, catalyst dose, pH, and molar ratio of H₂O₂:MB was also evaluated in governing the photocatalytic activity of Fe/MIL-47. The reusability of Fe/MIL-47 was evidenced through its repetitive uses in MB photodegradation. The current work highlighted the potential of Fe impregnation for modification of MOFs in order to fabricate highly efficient and water-stable heterogeneous photocatalyst for degradation of organic pollutants. With the use of an economical and environmentally safe reagent (i.e., Fe), robust photocatalyst can exhibit high sustainability to warrant clean environmental remediation.

Microporous 2D indium metal–organic frameworks for selective CO2 capture and their application in the catalytic CO2-cycloaddition of epoxides

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Nanoporous Aluminum-Based Coordination Polymers as Catalysts for Selective Sulfoxidation Reaction

A series of aluminum-based coordination polymers or metal⁻organic frameworks (Al⁻MOFs), i.e., DUT-4, DUT-5, MIL-53, NH₂-MIL-53, and MIL-100, have been facile prepared by microwave (MW)-assisted reactions and used as catalysts for selective sulfoxidation reactions. The MW-assisted synthesis drastically reduced the reaction time from few days to hours. The prepared MOFs have smaller and uniform particle sizes and better yield compared to conventional hydrothermal method. Furthermore, the Al⁻MOFs have been successfully demonstrated as catalysts in oxidation reaction of methyl phenyl sulfide with H₂O₂ as oxidant, even under mild conditions, with more than 95% conversion.

Greening the Processes of Metal-Organic Framework Synthesis and their Use in Sustainable Catalysis

Given the shortage of sustainable resources and the increasingly serious environmental issues in recent decades, the demand for clean technologies and sustainable feedstocks is of great interest to researchers worldwide. With regard to the fields of energy saving and environmental remediation, the key point is the development of efficient catalysts, not only in terms of facile synthesis methods, but also the benign utilization of such catalysts. This work reviews the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-based materials in these fields. The definition of MOFs and MOF-based materials will be primarily introduced followed by a brief description of the characterization and stability of MOF-related materials under the applied conditions. The greening of MOF synthesis processes will then be discussed and catalogued by benign solvents and conditions and green precursors of MOFs. Furthermore, their suitable application in sustainable catalysis will be summarized, focusing on several typical atom-economic reactions, such as the direct introduction of H₂ or O₂ and C-C bond formation. Approaches towards reducing CO₂ emission by MOF-based catalysts will be described with special emphasis on CO₂ fixation and CO₂ reduction. In addition, driven by the explosive growth of energy consumption in the last century, much research has gone into biomass, which represents a renewable alternative to fossil fuels and a sustainable carbon feedstock for chemical production. The advanced progress of biomass-related transformations is also illustrated herein. Fundamental insights into the nature of MOF-based materials as constitutionally easily recoverable heterogeneous catalysts and as supports for various active sites is thoroughly discussed. Finally, challenges facing the development of this field and the outlook for future research are presented.
