Trianionic Carbocyclic NCN Pincer Ligand: Coordination Chemistry and Reactivity Studies

(BCHT-NCN)H3 (1) [1,6-bis(methylene(bis-2,6-diisopropylaniline)(benzo)cycloheptatriene)] was synthesized by nucleophilic substitution treating 1,6-bis(methylenebromide)(benzo)cycloheptatriene with 2 equiv of Li[2,6-iPr2C6H3NH], Li[Dipp-NH]. Triple deprotonation of (BCHT-NCN)H3 (1) using n-BuLi yields the deprotonation product [(BCHT-NCN)Li3] (2), which crystallizes as a dimer [{[BCHT-NCN]Li3(Et2O)2}2] (2)2. Coordination compounds of the trianionic pincer ligand were obtained with SnCl2, YCl3(THF)3.5, and HfCl4(THF)2: [(BCHT-NCN)SnLi] (3), [(BCHT-NCN)Y(THF)2] (4), [(BCHT-NCN)HfCl2][Li(THF)4] (5), respectively. A hafnium hydride complex [(BCHT-NCN)HfH(HBEt3)][K(Et2O)2] (6) was isolated after reaction of 5 with K[HBEt3]. A MeNHC substitution product [(BCHT-NCN)HfCl(MeNHC)] (7) was synthesized treating compound 5 with MeNHC at rt. Following an n-BuLi reaction of 7 gives an alkyl complex [(BCHT-NCN)Hf(n-Bu)(MeNHC)] (8). Thermolysis of 7 yields the isomerization product [(BCHT-NCN#)HfCl(MeNHC)] (9), which was transferred into a methyl complex [(BCHT-NCN#)HfMe(MeNHC)] (10) upon treatment with MeMgBr. Hydride abstraction from complex 9 leads to a cationic complex [(BCHT-NCN+)HfCl(MeNHC)][Al(OtBuF)4] (11).

Ruthenium polyhydrides supported by rigid PCP pincer ligands: dynamic behaviour and reactions with CO2

Two rigid β-elimination immune PCcarbeneP pincer ligands, differing in their electron donor properties by variation of the substitution pattern on the aromatic linker arms, were complexed to ruthenium to form the dichlorides LRRuCl2 (R = H or NMe2). These compounds were converted to hydrido chlorides by treatment with dihydrogen (H2) and a base. By converting to tert-butoxide derivatives in situ under an atmosphere of H2, the poly hydride PCalkylP complexes LHRRu(H)3 compounds were generated. In these complexes, H2 has added across the RuC bond in the PCcarbeneP starting materials. The polyhydrides are dynamic in solution and extensive NMR studies helped to elucidate the speciation and fluxional processes operative in this dynamic system. The polyhydride complexes react rapidly with CO2 to give the PCcarbeneP formato hydride complexes LRRu(H)-κ2-O2CH. For R = H, the 1,2-hydride shift from the anchoring alkyl of the PCalkylP carbon to the metal is reversible, but for R = NMe2 it is irreversible. The CO2 incorporated into the formato ligand of these compounds exchanges with free CO2via a bimolecular mechanism that is more rapid for R = NMe2 than for R = H; plausible explanations for this observation are proffered. Experiments designed to evaluate the efficacy of the R = NMe2 formato hydride complex as a catalyst precursor for CO2 hydrogenation to formate salts reveal poor performance in comparison to state-of-the-art ruthenium-based catalysts. This is due primarily to the precipitation of a dimeric μ-κ2-κ1-CO3 carbonate complex that is not an active catalyst for the reaction.

Access to and Reactivity of Fe0 , Fe-I , FeI , and FeII PCcarbene P Pincer Complexes

Despite their promising metal-ligand cooperative reactivity, PC_carbene P pincer ligands are rarely reported for first-row transition-metal centres. Using a dehydration methodology, we report access to an Fe⁰ PC_carbene P pincer complex (1) that proceeds via an isolated α-hydroxylalkyl hydrido complex (3). Reversible carbonyl migration to the carbene position in 1 is found to allow coordination chemistry and E-H bond addition (E=H, B, Cl) across the iron-carbene linkage, representing a unique mechanism for metal-ligand cooperativity. The PC_carbene P pincer ligand is also found to stabilize formal Fe^II , Fe^I , and Fe^-I oxidation states, as demonstrated with synthesis and characterization of the complexes [11-X][BAr^F ₂₀ ] (X=Br, I), 12, and K[13]. Compound K[13] is found to be highly reactive, and abstracts hydrogen from a range of aliphatic C-H sources. Computational analysis by DFT suggests that the formal Fe^I and Fe^-I complexes contain significant carbene radical character. The ability of the PC_carbene P ligand scaffold to partake in metal-ligand cooperativity and to support a range of iron oxidation states renders it as potentially useful in many catalytic applications.

Forays into rhodium macrocyclic chemistry stabilized by a P2N2 donor set. Activation of dihydrogen and benzene

The reaction of the dilithium diamido-diphosphine macrocycle, Li₂[N(SiMe₂CH₂P(Ph)CH₂SiMe₂)₂N] (Li₂[P₂N₂]) with [Rh(COD)Cl]₂ generates the dirhodium macrocyclic compound, [P₂N₂][Rh(COD)]₂ (where COD = η⁴-1,5-cyclooctadiene), wherein both rhodium-COD units are syn to each other and have square planar geometries. While this dirhodium derivative does react with H₂, no clean products could be isolated. Upon reaction of Li₂[P₂N₂] with [Rh(COE)₂Cl]₂ (where COE is η²-cyclooctene), the dilithium-dihodium derivative ([Rh(COE)][P₂N₂]Li)₂(dioxane) forms, which was characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis and NMR spectroscopy. The cyclooctene derivative reacts with dihydrogen in benzene to generate the dilithium-dirhodium-dihydride complex ([Rh(H)₂][P₂N₂]Li)₂(dioxane); also formed is the dilithium-dirhodium-phenylhydride complex ([Rh(C₆H₅)H][P₂N₂]Li)₂(dioxane) via oxidative addition of a C-H bond of the solvent. The phenyl-hydride is eventually converted to the dihydride derivative via further reaction with H₂. This process is complicated by adventitious H₂O, which leads to the isolation of the amine-dihydride, Rh[P₂N₂H](H)₂; drying of the H₂ eliminates this side product. Nevertheless, careful addition of H₂O to ([Rh(COE)][P₂N₂]Li)₂(dioxane) results in protonation of one of the amido units and the formation of the rhodium-amine cyclooctene derivative, Rh[P₂N₂H](COE), which upon reaction with H₂ generates the aforementioned amine-dihydride, Rh[P₂N₂H](H)₂. The mechanism by which dihydrogen and C-H bonds of benzene are activated likely involves initial dissociation of cyclooctene from the 18-electron centers in ([Rh(COE)][P₂N₂]Li)₂(dioxane), followed by H-H and C-H bond activation. The ability of one of the amido units of the P₂N₂ macrocycle to be protonated is a potentially useful proton storage mechanism and is of interest in other bond activation processes.

H/D exchange under mild conditions in arenes and unactivated alkanes with C6D6 and D2O using rigid, electron-rich iridium PCP pincer complexes

The synthesis and characterization of an iridium polyhydride complex (Ir-H4) supported by an electron-rich PCP framework is described. This complex readily loses molecular hydrogen allowing for rapid room temperature hydrogen isotope exchange (HIE) at the hydridic positions and the α-C-H site of the ligand with deuterated solvents such as benzene-d6, toluene-d8 and THF-d8. The removal of 1-2 equivalents of molecular H2 forms unsaturated iridium carbene trihydride (Ir-H3) or monohydride (Ir-H) compounds that are able to create further unsaturation by reversibly transferring a hydride to the ligand carbene carbon. These species are highly active hydrogen isotope exchange (HIE) catalysts using C6D6 or D2O as deuterium sources for the deuteration of a variety of substrates. By modifying conditions to influence the Ir-Hn speciation, deuteration levels can range from near exhaustive to selective only for sterically accessible sites. Preparative level deuterations of select substrates were performed allowing for procurement of >95% deuterated compounds in excellent isolated yields; the catalyst can be regenerated by treatment of residues with H2 and is still active for further reactions.

The protonation of the benzo annulated cycloheptatriene PCP pincer ruthenium hydrido dicarbonyl complex using the superacid [H(Et₂O)₂][BArF₂₄] launches a cascade of hydride shifts which lead to the hydrogenation of the ligand backbone.

Ln(ii) and Ca(ii) NCsp3N pincer type diarylmethanido complexes – promising catalysts for C–C and C–E (E = Si, P, N, S) bond formation

The first examples of Ln(ii) (Ln = Yb, Sm) and Ca [NC_sp3N] pincer type diarylmethanido complexes were synthesized and successfully used as efficient and selective precatalyst for intermolecular C–C and C–E bond formation.

Halogenation of A-frame μ-carbido complexes: a diamagnetic rhodium(ii) carbido complex

Chlorination of the new μ-carbido [Rh₂(μ-C)Cl₂(μ-dppf)₂] (dppf = 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene) affords the dirhodium(ii) complex [Rh₂(μ-C)Cl₄(μ-dppf)₂] the carbido bridge of which can only be adequately described by delocalised bonding.

Synthesis and reactivity of a PCcarbeneP cobalt(i) complex: the missing link in the cobalt PXP pincer series (X = B, C, N)

We report the first example of a cobalt PC_carbeneP pincer complex (1) featuring a central alkylidene carbon donor accessed through the dehydration of an alcoholic POP proligand.

We report the first example of a cobalt PC_carbeneP pincer complex (1) featuring a central alkylidene carbon donor accessed through the dehydration of an alcoholic POP proligand. Complex 1 shares bonding similarities with cobalt PBP and PNP pincer complexes where the donor atom engages in π-bonding with the cobalt centre, and thus completes the PXP (X = B, C, N) pincer ligand series for cobalt (for X donors that partake in M–L π-bonding). As compared to PBP and PNP pincer complexes, which are known to be good hydride and proton acceptors (respectively), complex 1 is found to be an effective hydrogen atom acceptor. Complex 1 partakes in cooperative ligand reactivity, engaging in several small molecule activations with styrene, bromine, carbon disulphide, phenyl acetylene, acetonitrile, hydrogen, benzaldehyde and water (through microreversibility). The mechanism for the formation of complex 1 is studied through the isolation and computational analysis of key intermediates. The formation of 1 is found to avoid C–H activation of the proligand, and instead proceeds through a combination of O–H activation, hydrogen atom transfer, β-hydride elimination and hydrogen activation processes.
