Portable Sensor Array for On-Site Detection and Discrimination of Pesticides and Herbicides Using Multivariate Analysis

Modern agricultural practice relies heavily on pesticides and herbicides to increase crop productivity, and consequently, their residues have a negative impact on the environment and public health. Thus, keeping these issues in account, herein we developed an azodye-based chromogenic sensor array for the detection and discrimination of pesticides and herbicides in food and soil samples, utilizing machine learning approaches such as hierarchical clustering analysis, principal component analysis, linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and partial least square regression (PLSR). The azodye-based sensor array was developed in combination with various metal ions owing to their different photophysical properties, which led to distinct patterns toward various pesticides and herbicides. The obtained distinct patterns were recognized and processed through automated multivariate analysis, which enables the selective and sensitive identification and discrimination of various target analytes. Further, the qualitative and quantitative determination of target analytes were performed using LDA and PLSR; the results obtained show a linear correlation with varied concentrations of target analytes with R2 values from 0.89 to 0.96, the limit of detection from 5.3 to 11.8 ppm with a linear working range from 1 to 30 μM toward analytes under investigation. Further, the developed sensor array was successfully utilized for the discrimination of a binary mixture of pesticide (chlorpyrifos) and herbicide (glyphosate).

Chlorocobaloxime containing N-(4-pyridylmethyl)-1,8-naphthalamide peripheral ligands: synthesis, characterization and enhanced electrochemical hydrogen evolution in alkaline medium

Two new discrete cobaloxime based complexes with the general formula [ClCo(dioxime)₂L] (1 and 2), L1 = N-(4-pyridylmethyl)-1,8-naphthalamide, L2 = 4-bromo-N-(4-pyridylmethyl)-1,8-naphthalamide have been synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques such as FT-IR, ¹H, ¹³C{¹H} NMR and PXRD. The molecular structures of both complexes have also been determined using single crystal X-ray crystallography. The solid state molecular structures revealed distorted octahedral geometry around the Co(III) central metal ion with two dioximes in the equatorial plane and axial positions are occupied by chloro and pyridine nitrogen of N-(4-pyridylmethyl)-1,8-naphthalamide ligands. Both complexes exhibit weaker non-covalent interactions (C-H⋯O, C-H⋯Cl and C-H⋯π(Centroid) in complex 1 whereas C-H⋯O and C-H⋯Br in complex 2) resulting in the formation of dimeric and 1D supramolecular structures. Furthermore, these complexes are immobilized onto the surface of activated carbon cloth (CC) and their electrocatalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has been investigated in alkaline and acidic media as well as buffer solution. In alkaline medium, we found that complex 2 exhibited impressive electrocatalytic HER activity and produced a current density of -10 mA cm^-2 at an overpotential of 260 mV, whereas complex 1 produced the same current density at an overpotential of 334 mV. An electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) spectral study revealed the faster charge transfer kinetics of complex 2 than that of complex 1. Similarly, the low Tafel slope (100 mV dec^-1) for the HER with complex 2 indicates faster HER kinetics compared to complex 1. The chronoamperometric study showed that complex 2 is stable under electrocatalytic HER conditions for 5 h without losing the initial current density and it has also been established that the complex structure is retained after electrocatalysis.

A novel isatin-based probe for ratiometric and selective detection of Hg2+ and Cu2+ ions present in aqueous and environmental samples

A novel isatin derivative (1) is UV-Visible active and displays about 90 nm bathochromic shift upon interaction with only Hg²⁺ and Cu²⁺, but not with other common metal ions. Also, the colorless probe 1 turns to brick-red and yellow in the presence of Hg²⁺ and Cu²⁺, respectively. Addition of increasing amounts of Hg²⁺ or Cu²⁺ to 1 leads to the emergence of a new absorption at ~470 nm (due to LMCT), with a concomitant decrease in the intensity of absorption of 1 at ~380 nm, and thereby provides a ratiometric response. Common metal ions and anions do not interfere with the interactions of 1 with Hg²⁺or Cu²⁺ ions. Probe 1 shows very high sensitivity and selectivity towards Hg²⁺ and Cu²⁺ as revealed by their very low detection limits 0.95 × 10^-9 M and 1.5 × 10^-9 M, respectively. Formation of 1:1 complex with Hg²⁺ and 2:1 complex with Cu²⁺ is confirmed using NMR, ESI-MS and FT-IR techniques, Job plot and DFT calculations. Selective detection of Hg²⁺ from Cu²⁺ is established from the ratiometric response caused by β-mercaptoethanol. Advantages of the probe 1 in terms of high sensitivity, stability in the physiological pH and suitability for dual detection are presented. Probe impregnated silica plates for onsite detection of Hg²⁺ and Cu²⁺ present in environmental samples is also demonstrated.

Evaluation of azamethiphos and dimethoate degradation using chlorine dioxide during water treatment

Chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) degradation of the organophosphorus pesticides azamethiphos (AZA) and dimethoate (DM) (10 mg/L) in deionized water and in Sava River water was investigated for the first time. Pesticide degradation was studied in terms of ClO₂ level (5 and 10 mg/L), degradation duration (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 6, and 24 h), pH (3.00, 7.00, and 9.00), and under light/dark conditions in deionized water. Degradation was monitored using high-performance liquid chromatography. Gas chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass detector was used to identify degradation products of pesticides. Total organic carbon was measured to determine the extent of mineralization after pesticide degradation. Real river water was used under recommended conditions to study the influence of organic matter on pesticide degradation. High degradation efficiency (88-100% for AZA and 85-98% for DM) was achieved in deionized water under various conditions, proving the flexibility of ClO₂ degradation for the examined organophosphorus pesticides. In Sava River water, however, extended treatment duration achieved lower degradation efficiency, so ClO₂ oxidized both the pesticides and dissolved organic matter in parallel. After degradation, AZA produced four identified products (6-chlorooxazolo[4,5-b]pyridin-2(3H)-one; O,O,S-trimethyl phosphorothioate; 6-chloro-3-(hydroxymethyl)oxazolo[4,5-b]pyridin-2(3H)-one; O,O-dimethyl S-hydrogen phosphorothioate) and DM produced three (O,O-dimethyl S-(2-(methylamino)-2-oxoethyl) phosphorothioate; e.g., omethoate; S-(2-(methylamino)-2-oxoethyl) O,O-dihydrogen phosphorothioate; O,O,S-trimethyl phosphorodithioate). Simple pesticide degradation mechanisms were deduced. Daphnia magna toxicity tests showed degradation products were less toxic than parent compounds. These results contribute to our understanding of the multiple influences that organophosphorus pesticides and their degradation products have on environmental ecosystems and to improving pesticide removal processes from water.

Synthesis, Structural, and Cytotoxic Properties of New Water-Soluble Copper(II) Complexes based on 2,9-Dimethyl-1,10-Phenanthroline and Their One Derivative Containing 1,3,5-Triaza-7-Phosphaadamantane-7-Oxide

A series of water-soluble copper(II) complexes based on 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dmphen) and mixed-ligands, containing PTA=O (1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane-7-oxide) have been synthesized and fully characterized. Two types of complexes have been obtained, monocationic [Cu(NO₃)(O-PTA=O)(dmphen)][PF₆] (1), [Cu(Cl)(dmphen)₂][PF₆] (2), and neutral [Cu(NO₃)₂(dmphen)] (3). The solid-state structures of all complexes have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Magnetic studies for the complex 1–3 indicated a very weak antiferromagnetic interaction between copper(II) ions in crystal lattice. Complexes were successfully evaluated for their cytotoxic activities on the normal human dermal fibroblast (NHDF) cell line and the antitumor activity using the human lung carcinoma (A549), epithelioid cervix carcinoma (HeLa), colon (LoVo), and breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) cell lines. Complexes 1 and 3 revealed lower toxicity to NHDF than A549 and HeLa cells, meanwhile compound 2 appeared to be more toxic to NHDF cell line in comparison to all cancer lines. Additionally, interactions between the complexes and human apo-transferrin (apo-Tf) using fluorescence and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy were also investigated. All compounds interacted with apo-transferrin, causing same changes of the protein conformation. Electrostatic interactions dominate in the 1/2 – apo- Tf systems and hydrophobic and ionic interactions in the case of 3.

Metal-Organocatalyst for Detoxification of Phosphorothioate Pesticides: Demonstration of Acetylcholine Esterase Activity

In recent years, transition metal complexes have been developed for catalytical degradation of a phosphate ester bond, particularly in RNA and DNA; however, less consideration has been given for development of complexes for the degradation of a phosphorothioate bond, as they are the foremost used pesticides in the environment and are toxic to human beings. In this context, we have developed copper complexes of benzimidazolium based ligands for catalytical degradation of a series of organophosphates (parathion, paraoxon, methyl-parathion) at ambient conditions. The copper complexes (assigned as N1-N3) were characterized using single X-ray crystallography which revealed that all three complexes are mononuclear and distorted square planner in geometry. Further, the solution state studies of the prepared complexes were carried out using UV-visible absorption, fluorescence spectroscopy, and cyclic voltametry. The complexes N1 and N2 have benzimidazolium ionic liquid as base attached with two 2-mercapto-benzimidazole pods, whereas complex N3 contains a nonionic ligand. The synthesized copper complexes were evaluated for their catalytic activity for degradation of organophosphates. It is interesting that the complex containing the ionic ligand efficiently degrades phosphorothioate pesticides, whereas complex N3 was not found to be appropriate for degradation due to a weaker conversion rate. The organophosphate degradation studies were monitored by recording absorbance spectra of parathion in the presence of catalyst, i.e., copper complexes with respect to time. The parathion was hydrolyzed into para-nitrophenol and diethyl thiophosphate. Moreover, to analyze the inhibition activity of the pesticides toward acetylcholine esterase enzyme in the presence of prepared metal complexes, Ellman's assay was performed and revealed that, within 20 min, the inhibition of acetylcholine esterase enzyme decreases by up to 13%.

Cobalt complexes of Biginelli derivatives as fluorescent probes for selective estimation and degradation of organophosphates in aqueous medium

Bonding between metal complexes of Biginelli derivatives and organophosphates leads to enhancement of emission intensity.
