Alkyl chain length influence of the functionalized diethanolamine ligand on the slow relaxation of the magnetization in {CoIII3DyIII3} complexes

We report the synthesis, structural characterization and magnetic properties of a series of Co(III)/Dy(III) complexes built up from an N-alkyl derivatized amino-alcohol ligand diethanolamine, functionalized with CnH2n+1 alkyl chains (n = 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10). While n = 3 afforded a butterfly {CoIII2DyIII2} core, the other alkyl chains (n = 4, 6, 8) afforded hexanuclear triangle-in-triangle {CoIII3DyIII3} complexes as shown by single-crystal X-ray determinations. Infrared spectroscopy allows us to characterize the C10 derivative complex, which did not crystallize. Magnetic ac susceptibility data collected below 10 K at driving frequencies up to 10 kHz under zero-dc field and up to 1 T provide insight into the SMM behaviour of the studied complexes. The characteristic time of the magnetization dynamics can be understood in terms of the competing Raman, Direct and Orbach-like mechanisms. A relationship between the magnetization dynamics within the family of complexes and the increasing alkyl chain length is discussed.

Synthesis, structural characterization, and magnetic property study of {Cr3Ln3}, Ln = Gd and Dy complexes

We have successfully prepared and structurally characterized triangle-in-triangle {Cr₃Ln₃} complexes with Ln = Gd and Dy employing alcohol-amine, N-methyldiethanolamine (H₂mdea) and pivalate ligands. These complexes and the Yttrium analogue proved to be isostructural and crystallized in a P₁ triclinic cell. DC and AC magnetic measurements were carried out and supported by quantum computations at DFT and CASSCF levels. DC magnetic data are dominated by the Cr(III)-Ln(III) antiferromagnetic interaction and by single-ion anisotropy in the case of the Dy(III) complex. Ln(III)-Ln(III) magnetic interactions are negligible, as well as Cr(III)-Cr(III) ones. From AC data, slow relaxation of the magnetization is observed at 0 DC applied magnetic field in the case of the Dy(III) complex below 4 K. From temperature and field dependence data, possible Raman and Orbach relaxation mechanisms are established in the absence of quantum tunnelling pathways, suggesting a successful suppression of the latter due to the Cr(III)-Dy(III) exchange interaction.

Tetranuclear Cr-Ln ferrocenecarboxylate complexes with a defect-dicubane structure: synthesis, magnetism, and thermolysis

Using ferrocenecarboxylic acid (FcCO₂H) and triethanolamine (H₃tea) as ligands, the isostructural heterotrimetallic complexes [LnIII2CrIII2(OH)₂(FcCO₂)₄(NO₃)₂(Htea)₂]·2MePh·2THF (Ln = Tb (1), Dy (2), Ho (3), Er (4), and Y (5); Fc = (η⁵-C₅H₄)(η⁵-C₅H₅)Fe; H₃tea = N(CH₂CH₂OH)₃) were obtained. In all of the complexes which possess a defective dicubane structure, two doubly deprotonated triethanolamine ligands chelate the chromium ions. However, during the synthesis of 1, an isomeric complex 1a in which Tb³⁺ is chelated by triethanolamine as a tetradentate ligand, was also isolated as a few single crystals. Magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed dominant antiferromagnetic interactions in the {LnIII2CrIII2} cores of 1-4 leading to the formation of complexes with an uncompensated magnetic moment, while weak Cr-Cr ferromagnetic interactions were detected in the Y analogue. Complexes 1, 2, and 3 exhibit single-molecule magnet properties dominated by an Orbach-type relaxation mechanism with magnetization reversal barriers (Δ/k_B) estimated around 54, 75, and 47 K, respectively. The Dy complex exhibits a magnetization hysteresis in an applied magnetic field at temperatures below 4 K. Thermolysis of the complexes was studied by TGA and DSC techniques; the final products obtained under an air atmosphere contain mixed oxide Cr_0.75Fe_1.25O₃ and heterotrimetallic oxide LnCr_1-xFe_xO₃ (with x ≈ 0.75) phases.

From tetranuclear to pentanuclear [Co-Ln] (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho) complexes across the lanthanide series: effect of varying sequence of ligand addition

Two new families of cobalt(ii/iii)-lanthanide(iii) coordination aggregates have been reported: tetranuclear [LnCoL₂(N-BuDEA)₂(O₂CCMe₃)₄(H₂O)₂]·(MeOH)_n·(H₂O)_m (Ln = Gd, 1; Tb, 2; Dy, 3; n = 2, m = 10 for 1 and 2; n = 6, m = 2 for 3) and pentanuclear LnCo^IICoL₂(N-BuDEA)₂(O₂CCMe₃)₆(MeOH)₂ (Ln = Dy, 4; Ho, 5) formed from the reaction of two aggregation assisting ligands H₂L (o-vanillin oxime) and N-BuDEAH₂ (N-butyldiethanolamine). A change in preference from a lower to higher nuclearity structure was observed on going across the lanthanide series brought about by the variation in the size of the Ln^III ions. An interesting observation was made for the varying sequence of addition of the ligands into the reaction medium paving the way to access both structural types for Ln = Dy. HRMS (+ve) of solutions gave further insight into the formation of the aggregates via different pathways. The tetranuclear complexes adopt a modified butterfly structure with a more complex bridging network while trapping of an extra Co^II ion in the pentanuclear complexes destroys this arrangement putting the Co-Co-Co axis above the Ln-Ln axis. Direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal weak antiferromagnetic coupling in 1. Complexes 2 and 5 display no slow magnetic relaxation, whereas complexes 3 and 4 display out-of-phase signals at low temperature in ac susceptibility measurements. All compounds were analyzed with DFT and CASSCF calculations and informations about the single-ion anisotropies and mutual 4f-4f/4f-3d magnetic interactions were derived.

Magnetic anisotropy in YbIII complex candidates for molecular qubits: a theoretical analysis

The magnetic properties of mononuclear YbIII complexes have been explored by using multiconfigurational CASPT2/RASSI calculations. Such complexes, in particular the case of [Yb(trensal)] complex, have been proposed as molecular qubits due to their spin dynamics properties. We have verified the accuracy of the theoretical approach to study such systems by comparing with experimental magnetic data. In order to have a wide overview of the magnetic properties of mononuclear YbIII complexes, we have considered simple charged and neutral models, [Yb(H2O)n]3+ and [Yb(OH)3(H2O)n-3], for many coordination modes. Thus, the results for more than 100 models allow extraction of some conclusions about the best ligand distributions in the coordination sphere to tailor the magnetic properties. Some low coordination, between 3 and 5, complexes that have no experimental magnetic data have been studied computationally to check if they can present high magnetic anisotropy.

Trigonal bipyramidal CoDy3 cluster exhibiting single-molecule magnet behavior

A heterometallic 3d-4f compound formulated as {[CoIII2Dy3Na(CH3CH2COO)6(OH)6(NO3)4(H2O)2]·H2O}n (1) has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The Co2Dy3 metal core adopts trigonal bipyramidal (TBP) geometry. Compound 1 displays single-molecule magnet behavior with an energy barrier of 60.3 K under a zero dc field.

A family of planar hexanuclear CoLn clusters with lucanidae-like arrangement and single-molecule magnet behavior

A family of planar hexanuclear CoLn clusters with the hydroxyl and nitrogen rich ligand 2-[bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl) amino]-2-(hydroxymethyl)propane-1,3-diol (H₃L), formulated as [Co₄Ln₂(μ₃-O)₂(μ-N₃)₂(OH)₂(H₂O)₂(HL)₄]·(CH₃CO₂)₂·20H₂O [Ln = Dy (1), Gd (2), Tb (3), Eu (4) and Ho (5)], have been synthesized and structurally characterized. They are isomorphous and feature a lucanidae-like arrangement. They are the first examples of 3d-4f clusters with the H₃L ligand. In addition, the magnetic properties of 1-5 have been investigated and the single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour is observed for 1.

Evidencing under-barrier phenomena in a Yb(iii) SMM: a joint luminescence/neutron diffraction/SQUID study
