Unveiled the Structure-Selectivity Relationship for Carbon Dioxide Reduction Triggered by Bi-Doped Cu-Based Nanocatalysts

To investigate synergistic effect between geometric and electronic structures on directing CO2RR selectivity, water phase synthetic protocol and surface architecture engineering strategy are developed to construct monodispersed Bi-doped Cu-based nanocatalysts. The strongly correlated catalytic directionality and Bi3+ dopant can be rationalized by the regulation of [*COOH]/[*CO] adsorption capacities through the appropriate doping of Bi3+ electronic modulator, resulting in volcano relationship between FECO/TOFCO and surface EVBM values. Spectroscopic study reveals that the dual-site binding mode ([Cu─μ─C(═O)O─Bi3+]) enabled by Cu1Bi3+ 2 motif in single-phase Cu150Bi1 nanocatalyst drives CO2-to-CO conversion. In contrast, the study of dynamic Bi speciation and phase transformation in dual-phase Cu50Bi1 nanocatalyst unveils that the Bi0-Bi0 contribution emerges at the expense of BOC phase, suggesting metallic Bi0 phase acting as [H]˙ formation center switches CO2RR selectivity toward CO2-to-HCOO- conversion via [*OCHO] and [*OCHOK] intermediates. This work provides significant insight into how geometric architecture cooperates with electronic effect and catalytic motif/phase to guide the selectivity of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction through the distinct surface-bound intermediates and presents molecular-level understanding of catalytic mechanism for CO/HCOO- formation.

Key Role of Cations in Stabilizing Hydrogen Radicals for CO2-to-CO Conversion via a Reverse Water-Gas Shift Reaction

Electrochemically converting CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels in acidic media is argued as a promising energy- and carbon-efficient route. Although several key roles of alkali cations have been unveiled, the alkali cation trends for CO2 reduction remain largely elusive. With decreasing cation size from Cs+ to Li+, here we show that the apparent proton diffusion coefficient in 3.0 M Li+ is tens-fold lower than in 3.0 M K+ and 3.0 M Cs+ acidic electrolytes. Although Li+ has the strongest inhibition ability for proton transport, it acts the worst for both the CO2-to-CO conversion and partial current density on Au catalysts. Unexpectedly, K+ with a higher proton transport performs the best for CO2-to-CO conversion. We thus revisit the roles of alkali cations and find that hydrated K+ can stabilize hydrogen radicals benefiting CO2 conversion at the electrode interface while for Li+ this is not the case. This study proposes that cation-stabilized atomic hydrogen assists in activating CO2 via a reverse water-gas shift route under electrochemical conditions.

Application of EPR Spectroscopy in TiO2 and Nb2O5 Photocatalysis

The interaction of light with semiconducting materials becomes the center of a wide range of technologies, such as photocatalysis. This technology has recently attracted increasing attention due to its prospective uses in green energy and environmental remediation. The characterization of the electronic structure of the semiconductors is essential to a deep understanding of the photocatalytic process since they influence and govern the photocatalytic activity by the formation of reactive radical species. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy is a unique analytical tool that can be employed to monitor the photoinduced phenomena occurring in the solid and liquid phases and provides precise insights into the dynamic and reactivity of the photocatalyst under different experimental conditions. This review focus on the application of EPR in the observation of paramagnetic centers formed upon irradiation of titanium dioxide and niobium oxide photocatalysts. TiO2 and Nb2O5 are very well-known semiconductors that have been widely used for photocatalytic applications. A large number of experimental results on both materials offer a reliable platform to illustrate the contribution of the EPR studies on heterogeneous photocatalysis, particularly in monitoring the photogenerated charge carriers, trap states, and surface charge transfer steps. A detailed overview of EPR-spin trapping techniques in mechanistic studies to follow the nature of the photogenerated species in suspension during the photocatalytic process is presented. The role of the electron donors or the electron acceptors and their effect on the photocatalytic process in the solid or the liquid phase are highlighted.

Short- and Long-Term Effects of X-ray Synchrotron Radiation on Cotton Paper

X-ray analytical techniques are increasingly being used to study manuscripts and works of art on paper, whether with laboratory equipment or synchrotron sources. However, it is difficult to anticipate the impact of X-ray photons on paper- and cellulose-based artifacts, particularly due to the large variety of their constituents and degradation levels, and the subsequent material multiscale heterogeneity. In this context, this work aims at developing an analytical approach to study the modifications in paper upon synchrotron radiation (SR) X-ray radiation using analytical techniques, which are fully complementary and highly sensitive, yet not frequently used together. At the molecular scale, cellulose chain scissions and hydroxyl free radicals were measured using chromatographic separation techniques (size-exclusion chromatography-multiangle laser light scattering-differential refractive index (SEC-MALS-DRI) and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detector-diode array detector (RP-HPLC-FLD-DAD)), while the optical properties of paper were characterized using spectroscopy (UV luminescence and diffuse reflectance). These techniques showed different sensitivities toward the detection of changes. The modifications in the cellulosic material were monitored in real time, within a few days, and up to 2 years following the irradiation to define a lowest observed adverse effect dose (LOAED). As paper is a hygroscopic material, the impact of the humidity in the environment was studied using this approach. Three levels of moisture content in the paper, achieved by conditioning the samples and irradiating them at different relative humidities (RHs), were studied (0, 50, 80% RH). It was shown that very low moisture content accelerated molecular and optical modifications.
