Research progress of environmentally friendly marine antifouling coatings

The antifouling mechanisms and research progress in the past three years of environmentally friendly marine antifouling coatings are introduced in this work.

Fluorescent Noble Metal Nanoclusters Loaded Protein Hydrogel Exhibiting Anti-Biofouling and Self-Healing Properties for Electrochemiluminescence Biosensing Applications

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) showed great potential in various analytical applications, especially in the sensing of biotargets, taking advantage of its high sensitivity, selectivity, ease of spatial and temporal control, and simplified optical setup. However, during the sensing of complex biological samples, ECL sensors often suffered severe interferences from unavoidable nonspecific-binding of biomacromolecules and physical damages of ECL sensing interfaces. Herein, a hydrogel based ECL biosensing system exhibiting excellent anti-biofouling and self-healing properties is developed. A protein hydrogel composed of bovine serum albumin (BSA) directed fluorescent Au/Ag alloy nanoclusters (Au/Ag NCs) is applied in building ECL sensing systems. The hydrogel matrix facilitates the immobilization of fluorescent Au/Ag NCs as excellent ECL probes, and the porous hydrophilic structure allows the free diffusion of small molecular biotargets while rejecting macromolecular interferences. Moreover, the hydrogel exhibits excellent self-healing property, with the ECL intensity recovered rapidly in 10 min after cutting. The hydrogel ECL system is successfully applied in sensing glutathione (GSH) in serum, confirming the applicability of the hydrogel based anti-biofouling ECL sensing system in sensing complex biological samples. This research may inspire the development of novel anti-biofouling and self-healing ECL biosensors for biosensing applications.

Physical and Chemical Factors Influencing the Printability of Hydrogel-based Extrusion Bioinks

Bioprinting researchers agree that "printability" is a key characteristic for bioink development, but neither the meaning of the term nor the best way to experimentally measure it has been established. Furthermore, little is known with respect to the underlying mechanisms which determine a bioink's printability. A thorough understanding of these mechanisms is key to the intentional design of new bioinks. For the purposes of this review, the domain of printability is defined as the bioink requirements which are unique to bioprinting and occur during the printing process. Within this domain, the different aspects of printability and the factors which influence them are reviewed. The extrudability, filament classification, shape fidelity, and printing accuracy of bioinks are examined in detail with respect to their rheological properties, chemical structure, and printing parameters. These relationships are discussed and areas where further research is needed, are identified. This review serves to aid the bioink development process, which will continue to play a major role in the successes and failures of bioprinting, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine going forward.

Recent Developments in Thiolated Polymeric Hydrogels for Tissue Engineering Applications

This review focuses on the recent strategy in the preparation of thiolated polymers and fabrication of their hydrogel matrices. The mechanism involved in the synthesis of thiolated polymers and fabrication of thiolated polymer hydrogels is exemplified with suitable schematic representations reported in the recent literature. The 2-iminothiolane namely "Traut's reagent" has been widely used for effectively thiolating the natural polymers such as collagen and gelatin, which contain free amino group in their backbone. The free carboxylic acid group containing polymers such as hyaluronic acid and heparin have been thiolated by using the bifunctional molecules such as cysteamine and L-cysteine via N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N'-ethylcarbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) coupling reaction. The degree of thiolation in the polymer chain has been widely determined by using Ellman's assay method. The thiolated polymer hydrogels are prepared by disulfide bond formation (or) thiol-ene reaction (or) Michael-type addition reaction. The thiolated polymers such as thiolated gelatin are reacted with polyethylene glycol diacrylate for obtaining interpenetrating polymer network hydrogel scaffolds. Several in vitro cell culture experiments indicate that the developed thiolated polymer hydrogels exhibited biocompatibility and cellular mimicking properties. The developed hydrogel scaffolds efficiently support proliferation and differentiation of various cell types. In the present review article, the thiol-functionalized protein-based biopolymers, carbohydrate-based polymers, and some synthetic polymers have been covered with recently published research articles. In addition, the usage of new thiolated nanomaterials as a crosslinking agent for the preparation of three-dimensional tissue-engineered hydrogels is highlighted.
