Nanostructured Carbon Nitride for Continuous-Flow Trifluoromethylation of (Hetero)arenes

Efficient catalytic methods for the trifluoromethylation of (hetero)arenes are of particular importance in organic and pharmaceutical manufacturing. However, many existing protocols rely on toxic reagents and expensive or sterically hindered homogeneous catalysts. One promising alternative to conduct this transformation involves the use of carbon nitride, a non-toxic photocatalyst prepared from inexpensive precursors. Nonetheless, there is still little understanding regarding the interplay between physicochemical features of this photocatalyst and the corresponding effects on the reaction rate. In this work, we elucidate the role of carbon nitride nanostructuring on the catalytic performance, understanding the effect of surface area and band gap tuning via metal insertion. Our findings provide new insights into the structure-function relationships of the catalyst, which we exploit to design a continuous-flow process that maximizes catalyst-light interaction, facilitates catalyst reusability, and enables intensified reaction scale-up. This is particularly significant given that photocatalyzed batch protocols often face challenges during industrial exploitation. Finally, we extrapolate the rapid and simplified continuous-flow method to the synthesis of a variety of functionalized heteroaromatics, which have numerous applications in the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries.

Role of Multiple Vanadium Centers on Redox Buffering and Rates of Polyvanadomolybdate-Cu(II)-Catalyzed Aerobic Oxidations

A recent report established that the tetrabutylammonium (TBA) salt of hexavanadopolymolybdate TBA₄H₅[PMo₆V₆O₄₀] (PV₆Mo₆) serves as the redox buffer with Cu(II) as a co-catalyst for aerobic deodorization of thiols in acetonitrile. Here, we document the profound impact of vanadium atom number (x = 0-4 and 6) in TBA salts of PV_xMo_12-xO₄₀^(3+x)- (PVMo) on this multicomponent catalytic system. The PVMo cyclic voltammetric peaks from 0 to -2000 mV vs Fc/Fc⁺ under catalytic conditions (acetonitrile, ambient T) are assigned and clarify that the redox buffering capability of the PVMo/Cu catalytic system derives from the number of steps, the number of electrons transferred each step, and the potential ranges of each step. All PVMo are reduced by varying numbers of electrons, from 1 to 6, in different reaction conditions. Significantly, PVMo with x ≤ 3 not only has much lower activity than when x > 3 (for example, the turnover frequencies (TOF) of PV₃Mo₉ and PV₄Mo₈ are 8.9 and 48 s^-1, respectively) but also, unlike the latter, cannot maintain steady reduction states when the Mo atoms in these polyoxometalate (POMs) are also reduced. Stopped-flow kinetics measurements reveal that Mo atoms in Keggin PVMo exhibit much slower electron transfer rates than V atoms. There are two kinetic arguments: (a) In acetonitrile, the first formal potential of PMo₁₂ is more positive than that of PVMo₁₁ (-236 and -405 mV vs Fc/Fc⁺); however, the initial reduction rates are 1.06 × 10^-4 s^-1 and 0.036 s^-1 for PMo₁₂ and PVMo₁₁, respectively. (b) In aqueous sulfate buffer (pH = 2), a two-step kinetics is observed for PVMo₁₁ and PV₂Mo₁₀, where the first and second steps are assigned to reduction of the V and Mo centers, respectively. Since fast and reversible electron transfers are key for the redox buffering behavior, the slower electron transfer kinetics of Mo preclude these centers functioning in redox buffering that maintains the solution potential. We conclude that PVMo with more vanadium atoms allows the POM to undergo more and faster redox changes, which enables the POM to function as a redox buffer dictating far higher catalytic activity.

Tetrabutyl Ammonium Salts of Keggin-Type Vanadium-Substituted Phosphomolybdates and Phosphotungstates for Selective Aerobic Catalytic Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

A series of tetrabutyl ammonium (TBA) salts of V-included Keggin-type polyoxoanions with W (TBA4PW11V1O40 and TBA5PW10V2O40) and Mo (TBA4PMo11V1O40 and TBA5PMo10V2O40) as addenda atoms were prepared using a hydrothermal method. These synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance (DRS UV-Vis), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), CHN elemental analysis (EA), inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP-MS), and N2 physisorption techniques to assess their physicochemical/textural properties and correlate them with their catalytic performances. According to FT-IR and DRS UV-Vis, (PVXW(Mo)12−XO40)(3+X)− anions are the main species present in the TBA salts. Additionally, CHN-EA and ICP-MS revealed that the desired stoichiometry was obtained. Their catalytic activities in the liquid-phase aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde were studied at 5 bar of O2 at 170 °C. Independently of the addenda atom nature, the catalytic activity increased with the number of V in the Keggin anion structure. For both series of catalysts, TBA salts of polyoxometalates with the highest V-substitution degree (TBA5PMo10V2O40 and TBA5PW10V2O40) showed higher activity. The maximum benzyl alcohol conversions obtained were 93% and 97% using (TBA)5PMo10V2O40 and (TBA)5PW10V2O40 as catalysts, respectively. In all the cases, the selectivity toward benzaldehyde was higher than 99%.

Effect of Building Block Connectivity and Ion Solvation on Electrochemical Stability and Ionic Conductivity in Novel Fluoroether Electrolytes

Novel electrolytes are required for the commercialization of batteries with high energy densities such as lithium metal batteries. Recently, fluoroether solvents have become promising electrolyte candidates because they yield appreciable ionic conductivities, high oxidative stability, and enable high Coulombic efficiencies for lithium metal cycling. However, reported fluoroether electrolytes have similar molecular structures, and the influence of ion solvation in modifying electrolyte properties has not been elucidated. In this work, we synthesize a group of fluoroether compounds with reversed building block connectivity where ether moieties are sandwiched by fluorinated end groups. These compounds can support ionic conductivities as high as 1.3 mS/cm (30 °C, 1 M salt concentration). Remarkably, we report that the oxidative stability of these electrolytes increases with decreasing fluorine content, a phenomenon not observed in other fluoroethers. Using Raman and other spectroscopic techniques, we show that lithium ion solvation is controlled by fluoroether molecular structure, and the oxidative stability correlates with the "free solvent" fraction. Finally, we show that these electrolytes can be cycled repeatedly with lithium metal and other battery chemistries. Understanding the impact of building block connectivity and ionic solvation structure on electrochemical phenomena will facilitate the development of novel electrolytes for next-generation batteries.

A protecting group strategy to access stable lacunary polyoxomolybdates for introducing multinuclear metal clusters

Although metal-containing polyoxomolybdates (molybdenum oxide clusters) exhibit outstanding catalytic properties, their precise synthetic method has not yet been developed. This is mainly because the very low stability of the multivacant lacunary polyoxomolybdates limited their use as synthetic precursors. Here, we present a "protecting group strategy" in polyoxometalate synthesis and successfully develop an efficient method for synthesising multinuclear metal-containing polyoxomolybdates using pyridine as a protecting group for unstable trivacant lacunary Keggin-type polyoxomolybdate [PMo₉O₃₄]^9-. Specifically, tetranuclear cubane- and planar-type manganese clusters were selectively synthesised in the polyoxomolybdates using the present method. The importance of this work is that, in addition to being the first practical way of utilizing multivacant lacunary polyoxomolybdates as precursors, this new "protecting group strategy" will make it possible to produce polyoxometalates with unexplored structures and properties.

Synthesis of a phosphomolybdate with a tetranuclear vanadium core by installing vanadium atoms in a lacunary template using the protecting group strategy

Vanadium-containing phosphomolybdates have outstanding catalytic and electrochemical properties. However, their traditional one-pot synthesis in aqueous media generates a mixture of randomly distributed isomers and undesirable impurities, which has hampered the in-depth study of the catalysis and reaction mechanism of these compounds. Here, the selective synthesis of a tetranuclear vanadium-containing phosphomolybdate, [PV3Mo9O40(VO)]3-, was achieved for the first time by using a pyridine-protected [A-α-PMo9O31(py)3]3- (py = pyridine) as the template.

Recent advances in transition-metal-catalyzed incorporation of fluorine-containing groups

Fluorine chemistry plays an increasingly important role in pharmaceutical, agricultural, and materials industries. The incorporation of fluorine-containing groups into organic molecules can improve their chemical and physical properties, which attracts continuous interest in organic synthesis. Among various reported methods, transition-metal-catalyzed fluorination/fluoroalkylation has emerged as a powerful method for the construction of these compounds. This review attempts to describe the major advances in the transition-metal-catalyzed incorporation of fluorine, trifluoromethyl, difluoromethyl, trifluoromethylthio, and trifluoromethoxy groups reported between 2011 and 2019.

Recent advances of polyoxometalate-catalyzed selective oxidation based on structural classification

The structural diversity and tenability observed in POMs has encouraged extensive investigations into their catalytic activity. Based on the structural classification of POMs, this review summarizes recent advances relating to POM-catalyzed selective oxidation and places most emphasis on dynamic developments from 2015 onwards. Work which contributes to comparing the catalytic performance of POMs with delicate structural differences (e.g. the same type of POM structure with differences of the heteroatom, addenda, protonated state or counter-ion) and in elucidating the origin/distinction of catalytic activity, as well as reasonable mechanisms, are especially highlighted.

CF3SO2X (X = Na, Cl) as reagents for trifluoromethylation, trifluoromethylsulfenyl-, -sulfinyl- and -sulfonylation. Part 1: Use of CF3SO2Na

Sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate, CF3SO2Na, and trifluoromethanesulfonyl chloride, CF3SO2Cl, are two popular reagents that are widely used for the direct trifluoromethylation of a large range of substrates. Further, these two reagents are employed for the direct trifluoromethylsulfenylation and trifluoromethylsulfinylation, the introduction of the SCF3 and the S(O)CF3 group, respectively. In addition to the aforementioned reactions, the versatility of these two reagents is presented in other reactions such as sulfonylation and chlorination. This first part is dedicated to sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate.
