Active template synthesis

The active template synthesis of mechanically interlocked molecular architectures exploits the dual ability of various structural elements (metals or, in the case of metal-free active template synthesis, particular arrangements of functional groups) to serve as both a template for the organisation of building blocks and as a catalyst to facilitate the formation of covalent bonds between them. This enables the entwined or threaded intermediate structure to be covalently captured under kinetic control. Unlike classical passive template synthesis, the intercomponent interactions transiently used to promote the assembly typically do not 'live on' in the interlocked product, meaning that active template synthesis can be traceless and used for constructing mechanically interlocked molecules that do not feature strong binding interactions between the components. Since its introduction in 2006, active template synthesis has been used to prepare a variety of rotaxanes, catenanes and knots. Amongst the metal-ion-mediated versions of the strategy, the copper(I)-catalysed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) remains the most extensively used transformation, although a broad range of other catalytic reactions and transition metals also provide effective manifolds. In metal-free active template synthesis, the recent discovery of the acceleration of the reaction of primary amines with electrophiles through the cavity of crown ethers has proved effective for forming an array of rotaxanes without recognition elements, including compact rotaxane superbases, dissipatively assembled rotaxanes and molecular pumps. This Review details the active template concept, outlines its advantages and limitations for the synthesis of interlocked molecules, and charts the diverse set of reactions that have been used with this strategy to date. The application of active template synthesis in various domains is discussed, including molecular machinery, mechanical chirality, catalysis, molecular recognition and various aspects of materials science.

Rotaxane-Functionalized Dyes for Charge-Rectification in p-Type Photoelectrochemical Devices

A supramolecular photovoltaic strategy is applied to enhance power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of photoelectrochemical devices by suppressing electron-hole recombination after photoinduced electron transfer (PET). Here, the author exploit supramolecular localization of the redox mediator-in close proximity to the dye-through a rotaxane topology, reducing electron-hole recombination in p-type dye-sensitized solar cells (p-DSSCs). Dye PRotaxane features 1,5-dioxynaphthalene recognition sites (DNP-arms) with a mechanically-interlocked macrocyclic redox mediator naphthalene diimide macrocycle (3-NDI-ring), stoppering synthetically via click chemistry. The control molecule PStopper has stoppered DNP-arms, preventing rotaxane formation with the 3-NDI-ring. Transient absorption and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy studies show ultrafast (211 ± 7 fs and 2.92 ± 0.05 ps) PET from the dye-moiety of PRotaxane to its mechanically interlocked 3-NDI-ring-acceptor, slowing down the electron-hole recombination on NiO surfaces compared to the analogue . p-DSSCs employing PRotaxane (PCE = 0.07%) demonstrate a 30% PCE increase compared to PStopper (PCE = 0.05%) devices, combining enhancements in both open-circuit voltages (VOC = 0.43 vs 0.36 V) and short-circuit photocurrent density (JSC = -0.39 vs -0.34 mA cm-2 ). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows that PRotaxane devices exhibit hole lifetimes (τh ) approaching 1 s, a 16-fold improvement compared to traditional I- /I3 - -based systems (τh = 50 ms), demonstrating the benefits obtained upon nanoengineering of interfacial dye-regeneration at the photocathode.

Molecular Graphene Nanoribbon Junctions

One of the challenges for the realization of molecular electronics is the design of nanoscale molecular wires displaying long-range charge transport. Graphene nanoribbons are an attractive platform for the development of molecular wires with long-range conductance owing to their unique electrical properties. Despite their potential, the charge transport properties of single nanoribbons remain underexplored. Herein, we report a synthetic approach to prepare N-doped pyrene-pyrazinoquinoxaline molecular graphene nanoribbons terminated with diamino anchoring groups at each end. These terminal groups allow for the formation of stable molecular graphene nanoribbon junctions between two metal electrodes that were investigated by scanning tunneling microscope-based break-junction measurements. The experimental and computational results provide evidence of long-range tunneling charge transport in these systems characterized by a shallow conductance length dependence and electron tunneling through >6 nm molecular backbone.

Large area arrays of discrete single-molecule junctions derived from host-guest complexes

The desire to continually reduce the lower limits of semiconductor integrated circuit (IC) fabrication methods continues to inspire interest in unimolecular electronics as a platform technology for the realization of future (opto)electronic devices. However, despite successes in developing methods for the construction and measurement of single-molecule and large-area molecular junctions, exercising control over the precise junction geometry remains a significant challenge. Here, host-guest complexes of the wire-like viologen derivative 1,1'-bis(4-(methylthio)-phenyl)-[4,4'-bipyridine]-1,1'-diium chloride ([1][Cl]2) and cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) have been self-assembled in a regular pattern over a gold substrate. Subsequently, ligandless gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) synthesized in situ are deposited over the host-guest array. The agreement between the conductance of individual mono-molecular junctions, appropriately chosen as a function of the AuNP diameter, within this array determined by conductive probe atomic force microscope (c-AFM) and true single-molecule measurements for a closely similar host-guest complex within a scanning tunneling microscope break-junction (STM-BJ) indicates the formation of molecular junctions derived from these host-guest complexes without deleterious intermolecular coupling effects.

Stepwise Functionalization of a Pillar[5]arene-Containing [2]Rotaxane with Pentafluorophenyl Ester Stoppers

Detailed investigations into the stepwise bis-functionalization of a pillar[5]arene-containing rotaxane building block have been carried out. Upon a first stopper exchange, the pillar[5]arene moiety of the mono-acylated product is preferentially located close to its reactive pentafluorophenyl ester stopper, thus limiting the accessibility to the reactive carbonyl group by the nucleophilic reagents. Selective mono-functionalization is thus very efficient. Introduction of a second stopper is then possible to generate dissymmetrical rotaxanes with different amide stoppers. Moreover, when dethreading is possible upon the second acylation, the pillar[5]arene plays the role of a protecting group allowing the synthesis of dissymmetrical axles that are particularly difficult to prepare under statistical conditions. Finally, detailed conformation analysis of the rotaxanes revealed that the position of the pillar[5]arene moiety on its axle subunit is mainly governed by polar interactions in nonpolar organic solvents, whereas solvophobic effects play a major role in polar solvents.

Single-Molecule Chemical Reactions Unveiled in Molecular Junctions

Understanding chemical processes at the single-molecule scale represents the ultimate limit of analytical chemistry. Single-molecule detection techniques allow one to reveal the detailed dynamics and kinetics of a chemical reaction with unprecedented accuracy. It has also enabled the discoveries of new reaction pathways or intermediates/transition states that are inaccessible in conventional ensemble experiments, which is critical to elucidating their intrinsic mechanisms. Thanks to the rapid development of single-molecule junction (SMJ) techniques, detecting chemical reactions via monitoring the electrical current through single molecules has received an increasing amount of attention and has witnessed tremendous advances in recent years. Research efforts in this direction have opened a new route for probing chemical and physical processes with single-molecule precision. This review presents detailed advancements in probing single-molecule chemical reactions using SMJ techniques. We specifically highlight recent progress in investigating electric-field-driven reactions, reaction dynamics and kinetics, host–guest interactions, and redox reactions of different molecular systems. Finally, we discuss the potential of single-molecule detection using SMJs across various future applications.

Single-Molecule Junction Formation in Break-Junction Measurements

The scanning tunneling microscope-based break-junction (STM-BJ) technique is the most common method used to study the electronic properties of single-molecule junctions. It relies on repeatedly forming and rupturing a Au contact in an environment of the target molecules. The probability of junction formation is typically very high (∼70-95%), prompting questions relating to how the nanoscale structure of the Au electrode before the metal point contact ruptures alters junction formation. Here we analyze conductance traces measured with the STM-BJ setup by combining correlation analysis and multiple machine learning tools, including gradient-boosted trees and neural networks. We show that two key features describing the Au-Au contact prior to rupture determine the extent of contact relaxation (snapback) and the probability of junction formation. Importantly, our data strongly indicate that molecular junctions are formed prior to the rupture of the Au-Au contact, explaining the high probability of junction formation observed in room-temperature solution measurements.

Molecular Structure-(Thermo)electric Property Relationships in Single-Molecule Junctions and Comparisons with Single- and Multiple-Parameter Models

The most probable single-molecule conductance of each member of a series of 12 conjugated molecular wires, 6 of which contain either a ruthenium or platinum center centrally placed within the backbone, has been determined. The measurement of a small, positive Seebeck coefficient has established that transmission through these molecules takes place by tunneling through the tail of the HOMO resonance near the middle of the HOMO-LUMO gap in each case. Despite the general similarities in the molecular lengths and frontier-orbital compositions, experimental and computationally determined trends in molecular conductance values across this series cannot be satisfactorily explained in terms of commonly discussed "single-parameter" models of junction conductance. Rather, the trends in molecular conductance are better rationalized from consideration of the complete molecular junction, with conductance values well described by transport calculations carried out at the DFT level of theory, on the basis of the Landauer-Büttiker model.

Optimised power harvesting by controlling the pressure applied to molecular junctions

A major potential advantage of creating thermoelectric devices using self-assembled molecular layers is their mechanical flexibility. Previous reports have discussed the advantage of this flexibility from the perspective of facile skin attachment and the ability to avoid mechanical deformation. In this work, we demonstrate that the thermoelectric properties of such molecular devices can be controlled by taking advantage of their mechanical flexibility. The thermoelectric properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) fabricated from thiol terminated molecules were measured with a modified AFM system, and the conformation of the SAMs was controlled by regulating the loading force between the organic thin film and the probe, which changes the tilt angle at the metal-molecule interface. We tracked the thermopower shift vs. the tilt angle of the SAM and showed that changes in both the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient combine to optimize the power factor at a specific angle. This optimization of thermoelectric performance via applied pressure is confirmed through the use of theoretical calculations and is expected to be a general method for optimising the power factor of SAMs.

Resonance-Enhanced Charge Delocalization in Carbazole-Oligoyne-Oxadiazole Conjugates

There are notably few literature reports of electron donor-acceptor oligoynes, even though they offer unique opportunities for studying charge transport through "all-carbon" molecular bridges. In this context, the current study focuses on a series of carbazole-(C≡C)_n-2,5-diphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazoles (n = 1-4) as conjugated π-systems in general and explores their photophysical properties in particular. Contrary to the behavior of typical electron donor-acceptor systems, for these oligoynes, the rates of charge recombination after photoexcitation increase with increasing electron donor-acceptor distance. To elucidate this unusual performance, we conducted detailed photophysical and time-dependent density functional theory investigations. Significant delocalization of the molecular orbitals along the bridge indicates that the bridging states come into resonance with either the electron donor or acceptor, thereby accelerating the charge transfer. Moreover, the calculated bond lengths reveal a reduction in bond-length alternation upon photoexcitation, indicating significant cumulenic character of the bridge in the excited state. In short, strong vibronic coupling between the electron-donating N-arylcarbazoles and the electron-accepting 1,3,4-oxadiazoles accelerates the charge recombination as the oligoyne becomes longer.

Molecular-scale thermoelectricity: a worst-case scenario

This article highlights a novel strategy for designing molecules with high thermoelectric performance, which are resilient to fluctuations. In laboratory measurements of thermoelectric properties of single-molecule junctions and self-assembled monolayers, fluctuations in frontier orbital energies relative to the Fermi energy E_F of electrodes are an important factor, which determine average values of transport coefficients, such as the average Seebeck coefficient 〈S〉. In a worst-case scenario, where the relative value of E_F fluctuates uniformly over the HOMO-LUMO gap, a "worst-case scenario theorem" tells us that the average Seebeck coefficient will vanish unless the transmission coefficient at the LUMO and HOMO resonances take different values. This implies that junction asymmetry is a necessary condition for obtaining non-zero values of 〈S〉 in the presence of large fluctuations. This conclusion that asymmetry can drive high thermoelectric performance is supported by detailed simulations on 17 molecules using density functional theory. Importantly, junction asymmetry does not imply that the molecules themselves should be asymmetric. We demonstrate that symmetric molecules possessing a localised frontier orbital can achieve even higher thermoelectric performance than asymmetric molecules, because under laboratory conditions of slight symmetry breaking, such orbitals are 'silent' and do not contribute to transport. Consequently, transport is biased towards the nearest "non-silent" frontier orbital and leads to a high ensemble averaged Seebeck coefficient. This effect is demonstrated for a spatially-symmetric 1,2,3-triazole-based molecule, a rotaxane-hexayne macrocycle and a phthalocyanine.

In situ formation of H-bonding imidazole chains in break-junction experiments

As a small molecule possessing both strong H-bond donor and acceptor functions, 1H-imidazole can participate in extensive homo- or heteromolecular H-bonding networks. These properties are important in Nature, as imidazole moieties are incorporated in many biologically-relevant compounds. Imidazole also finds applications ranging from corrosion inhibition to fire retardants and photography. We have found a peculiar behaviour of imidazole during scanning tunnelling microscopy-break junction (STM-BJ) experiments, in which oligomeric chains connect the two electrodes and allow efficient charge transport. We attributed this behaviour to the formation of hydrogen-bonding networks, as no evidence of such behaviour was found in 1-methylimidazole (incapable of participating in intramolecular hydrogen bonding). The results are supported by DFT calculations, which confirmed our hypothesis. These findings pave the road to the use of hydrogen-bonding networks for the fabrication of dynamic junctions based on supramolecular interactions.

A Field-Effect Transistor Based on Cumulenic sp-Carbon Atomic Wires

Carbyne and linear carbon structures based on sp-hybridization are attractive targets as the ultimate one-dimensional system (i.e., one-atom in diameter) featuring wide tunability of optical and electronic properties. Two possible structures exist for sp-carbon atomic wires: (a) the polyynes with alternated single-triple bonds and (b) the cumulenes with contiguous double bonds. Theoretical studies predict semiconducting behavior for polyynes, while cumulenes are expected to be metallic. Very limited experimental work, however, has been directed toward investigating the electronic properties of these structures, mostly at the single-molecule or monolayer level. However, sp-carbon atomic wires hold great potential for solution-processed thin-film electronics, an avenue not exploited to date. Herein, we report the first field-effect transistor (FET) fabricated employing cumulenic sp-carbon atomic wires as a semiconductor material. Our proof-of-concept FET device is easily fabricated by solution drop casting and paves the way for exploiting sp-carbon atomic wires as active electronic materials.

Molecular Wires with Controllable π-Delocalization Incorporating Redox-Triggered π-Conjugated Switching Units

A perfluorobiphenyl-2,2'-diyl dication and its corresponding dihydrophenanthrene-type electron donor are interconvertible upon two-electron transfer. Redox-triggered C-C bond-formation/cleavage caused a drastic change in the torsion angle of the biphenyl unit. Thus, π-delocalization ON/OFF switching was observed as a change in the UV absorption upon electrolysis of the linearly extended analogue with two phenylethynyl groups. A further extended π-system with a molecular length of ca. 3.5 nm, which has two switching units, was synthesized. Spectroelectrograms as well as voltammetric analyses showed that the two units act nearly simultaneously because of the very small inter-unit electrostatic repulsion in the tetracationic state. Thus, the present pair is a promising candidate as a switching unit for "molecular wires" with controllable π-delocalization, in which a higher ON/OFF ratio of delocalization could be realized by incorporating multiple switching units.

Syntheses, Structures, and Spectroscopic Properties of 1,10-Phenanthroline-Based Macrocycles Threaded by PtC8 Pt, PtC12 Pt, and PtC16 Pt Axles: Metal-Capped Rotaxanes as Insulated Molecular Wires

The platinum polyynyl complexes trans-(C₆ F₅ )(p-tol₃ P)₂ Pt(C≡C)_n/2 H undergo oxidative homocoupling (O₂ , CuCl/TMEDA) to diplatinum polyynediyl complexes trans, trans-(C₆ F₅ )(p-tol₃ P)₂ Pt(C≡C)_n Pt(Pp-tol₃ )₂ (C₆ F₅ ) (n=4, 2; 6, 5; 8, 8; 92-97 %) as reported previously. When related reactions are conducted in the presence of CuI adducts of the 1,10-phenanthroline-based macrocycles 2,9-(1,10-phenanthrolinediyl)(p-C₆ H₄ O(CH₂ )₆ O)₂ (1,3-C₆ H₄ ) (10, 33-membered) or 2,9-(1,10-phenanthrolinediyl)(p-C₆ H₄ O(CH₂ )₆ O)₂ (2,7-naphthalenediyl) (11, 35-membered), excess K₂ CO₃ , and I₂ (oxidant), rotaxanes are isolated that feature a Pt(C≡C)_n Pt axle that has been threaded through the macrocycle (2⋅10, 9 %; 5⋅10, 41 %; 5⋅11, 28 %; 8⋅10, 12 %; 8⋅11, 9 %). Their crystal structures are determined and analyzed in detail, particularly with respect to geometric perturbations and the degree of steric sp carbon chain insulation. NMR spectra show a number of shielding effects. UV/Vis spectra do not indicate significant electronic interactions between the Pt(C≡C)_n Pt axles and macrocycles, although cyclic voltammetry data suggest rapid reactions following oxidation.

Electrochemically switchable rotaxanes: recent strides in new directions

Are they still electrifying? Electrochemically switchable rotaxanes are well known for their ability to efficiently undergo changes of (co-)conformation and properties under redox-control. Thus, these mechanically interlocked assemblies represent an auspicious liaison between the fields of molecular switches and molecular electronics. Since the first reported example of a redox-switchable molecular shuttle in 1994, improved tools of organic and supramolecular synthesis have enabled sophisticated new architectures, which provide precise control over properties and function. This perspective covers recent advances in the area of electrochemically active rotaxanes including novel molecular switches and machines, metal-containing rotaxanes, non-equilibrium systems and potential applications.

Understanding resonant charge transport through weakly coupled single-molecule junctions

Off-resonant charge transport through molecular junctions has been extensively studied since the advent of single-molecule electronics and is now well understood within the framework of the non-interacting Landauer approach. Conversely, gaining a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the resonant transport regime has proven more elusive. Here, we study resonant charge transport through graphene-based zinc-porphyrin junctions. We experimentally demonstrate an inadequacy of non-interacting Landauer theory as well as the conventional single-mode Franck–Condon model. Instead, we model overall charge transport as a sequence of non-adiabatic electron transfers, with rates depending on both outer and inner-sphere vibrational interactions. We show that the transport properties of our molecular junctions are determined by a combination of electron–electron and electron-vibrational coupling, and are sensitive to interactions with the wider local environment. Furthermore, we assess the importance of nuclear tunnelling and examine the suitability of semi-classical Marcus theory as a description of charge transport in molecular devices.

The mechanism of nonadiabatic electron transfer in molecular systems is an important research topic for understanding various chemical reactions. Thomas et al. quantify resonant charge transport through single-molecule junctions as a model system for examining quantum and Marcus theories.

Single-molecule level control of host-guest interactions in metallocycle-C60 complexes

Host−guest interactions are of central importance in many biological and chemical processes. However, the investigation of the formation and decomplexation of host−guest systems at the single-molecule level has been a challenging task. Here we show that the single-molecule conductance of organoplatinum(II) metallocycle hosts can be enhanced by an order of magnitude by the incorporation of a C₆₀ guest molecule. Mechanically stretching the metallocycle-C₆₀ junction with a scanning tunneling microscopy break junction technique causes the release of the C₆₀ guest from the metallocycle, and consequently the conductance switches back to the free-host level. Metallocycle hosts with different shapes and cavity sizes show different degrees of flexibility to accommodate the C₆₀ guest in response to mechanical stretching. DFT calculations provide further insights into the electronic structures and charge transport properties of the molecular junctions based on metallocycles and the metallocycle-C₆₀ complexes.

Studying the single-molecule behavior of host-guest complexes can provide fundamental insights into their supramolecular interactions. Here, the authors use the scanning tunneling microscopy break junction technique to show that encapsulation of a C₆₀ molecule significantly enhances the conductance of an organoplatinum metallocycle; mechanical stretching of the junction releases the guest, returning the conductance to free-host level.

Helical orbitals and circular currents in linear carbon wires

Disubstituted odd-carbon cumulenes are linear carbon wires with helical π-orbitals, which results in circular current around the wire.

Disubstituted odd-carbon cumulenes are linear carbon wires with near-degenerate helical π-orbitals. Such cumulenes are chiral molecules but their electronic structure consists of helical orbitals of both chiralities. For these helical molecular orbitals to give rise to experimentally observable effects, the near-degenerate orbitals of opposite helicities must be split. Here we show how pyramidalized single-faced π-donors, such as the amine substituent, provide a strategy for splitting the helical molecular orbitals. The chirality induced by the amine substituents allow for systematic control of the helicity of the frontier orbitals. We examine how the helical orbitals in odd-carbon cumulenes control the coherent electron transport properties, and we explicitly predict two modes in the experimental single-molecule conductance for these molecules. We also show that the current density through these linear wires exhibits strong circular currents. The direction of the circular currents is systematically controlled by the helicity of the frontier molecular orbitals, and is therefore altered by changing between the conformations of the molecule. Furthermore, the circular currents are subject to a full ring-reversal around antiresonances in the Landauer transmission, emphasizing the relation to destructive quantum interference. With circular currents present around truly linear carbon wires, cumulenes are promising candidates for novel applications in molecular electronics.

Selective synthesis of iridium(iii) end-capped polyynes by oxidative addition of 1-iodopolyynes to Vaska's complex

The reaction of bis(triphenylphosphine)iridium(i) carbonyl chloride (Vaska's complex) with a series of 1-iodopolyynes (1-C_nI and 2-C_nI) gave σ-polyynyl iridium(iii) complexes with general formula R(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C)_nIr(PPh₃)₂(Cl)(I)(CO). The use of acetonitrile as a solvent appeared crucial and allowed selectively obtaining only one from a few possible isomers. The X-ray single crystal diffraction experiment for 2-C₄[Ir]I allowed the determination of the exact structure of this complex. Further spectroscopic measurements, especially ³¹P NMR, confirmed the formation of the same type of isomers with trans coordinated phosphines in each case. All complexes were fully characterized with the use of NMR (¹H, ¹³C and ³¹P), IR, UV/Vis, cyclic voltammetry and (ESI)HRMS techniques. Moreover, DFT calculations were performed for all the resulting species. The complexes with a linear carbon chain from butadiyne to decapentayne are the longest iridium end-capped polyynes known to date since only compounds with a (C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C)₂ structural motif have been reported so far. Moreover, we confirmed that the synthetic approach, first used for palladium(ii) end-capped polyynes, may be also applied for the synthesis of other structurally new organometallic polyynes.

Towards molecular electronic devices based on 'all-carbon' wires

Nascent molecular electronic devices based on linear 'all-carbon' wires attached to gold electrodes through robust and reliable C-Au contacts are prepared via efficient in situ sequential cleavage of trimethylsilyl end groups from an oligoyne, Me₃Si-(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C)₄-SiMe₃ (1). In the first stage of the fabrication process, removal of one trimethylsilyl (TMS) group in the presence of a gold substrate, which ultimately serves as the bottom electrode, using a stoichiometric fluoride-driven process gives a highly-ordered monolayer, Au|C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CSiMe₃ (Au|C₈SiMe₃). In the second stage, treatment of Au|C₈SiMe₃ with excess fluoride results in removal of the remaining TMS protecting group to give a modified monolayer Au|C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH (Au|C₈H). The reactive terminal C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-H moiety in Au|C₈H can be modified by 'click' reactions with (azidomethyl)ferrocene (N₃CH₂Fc) to introduce a redox probe, to give Au|C₆C₂N₃HCH₂Fc. Alternatively, incubation of the modified gold substrate supported monolayer Au|C₈H in a solution of gold nanoparticles (GNPs), results in covalent attachment of GNPs on top of the film via a second alkynyl carbon-Au σ-bond, to give structures Au|C₈|GNP in which the monolayer of linear, 'all-carbon' C₈ chains is sandwiched between two macroscopic gold contacts. The covalent carbon-surface bond as well as the covalent attachment of the metal particles to the monolayer by cleavage of the alkyne C-H bond is confirmed by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The integrity of the carbon chain in both Au|C₆C₂N₃HCH₂Fc systems and after formation of the gold top-contact electrode in Au|C₈|GNP is demonstrated through electrochemical methods. The electrical properties of these nascent metal-monolayer-metal devices Au|C₈|GNP featuring 'all-carbon' molecular wires were characterised by sigmoidal I-V curves, indicative of well-behaved junctions free of short circuits.

Precise tuning of single molecule conductance in an electrochemical environment

Tuning of molecular conductance in a liquid environment is a hot topic in molecular electronics. In this article, we explore a new concept where the Fermi level positions of the metallic ends are varied simply by modifying the electroactive salt concentration in solution. We rely on the electrochemical scanning tunneling microscope break junction method that allows the construction in solution of copper atomic contacts that can be then bridged by single molecules. The experimental conductance evolution is first confronted with an analytical formulation that allows the deduction of the molecule's LUMO position and electronic coupling factors. These parameters are in close agreement with those obtained by independent DFT calculations.

Dual Control of Molecular Conductance through pH and Potential in Single-Molecule Devices

One of the principal aims of single-molecule electronics is to create practical devices out of individual molecules. Such devices are expected to play a particularly important role as novel sensors thanks to their response to wide ranging external stimuli. Here we show that the conductance of a molecular junction can depend on two independent stimuli simultaneously. Using a scanning tunnelling microscope break-junction technique (STM-BJ), we found that the conductance of 4,4'-vinylenedipyridine (44VDP) molecular junctions with Ni contacts depends on both the electrochemically applied gate voltage and the pH of the environment. Hence, not only can the Ni|44VDP|Ni junction function as a pH-sensitive switch, but the value of the pH at which switching takes place can be tuned electrically. Furthermore, through the simultaneous control of pH and potential the STM-BJ technique delivers unique insight into the acid-base reaction, including the observation of discrete proton transfers to and from a single molecule.

A Safe and Simple Synthesis of 1,4-Bis(trimethylsilyl)buta-1,3-diyne

The buta-1,3-diyne synthon 1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)buta-1,3-diyne (1) is an important building block for the introduction of butadiyne motifs into organic and organometallic structures. Although 1 is commonly prepared from the Hay homo-coupling of trimethylsilylacetylene (catalytic CuI/tetramethylethynylenediamine, O2, acetone), the report of a significant explosion during this preparation, likely arising from a static discharge during addition of the catalyst solution to the alkyne/acetone/O2 rich atmosphere, prompts consideration of alternative procedures. Here we report the use of the robust Navale catalyst system (CuI/N,N-dimethylaminopyridine, O2, NCMe) in the multigram-scale preparation of 1 with minimal manipulation of all-glass apparatus, greatly simplifying the process and minimising risks associated with the preparation of this useful compound.
