Abstract
Polyphosphazene derivatives are gaining popularity due to their eco-friendly character and high content of flame-retardant components. Herein, a polyphosphazene derivative (PZAF) microsphere was successfully synthesized utilizing an in-situ template approach, which was then employed as an additive flame retardant in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to improve the fire safety. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that PZAF promoted the pyrolysis of PET in advance to generate a stable char layer that protects the matrix from heat, consequently increasing char residues. With addition of 10 wt% PZAF, the PET nanocomposites obtained a V-0 grade in vertical combustion test and its LOI value increased from 24.2 vol% to 32.1 vol%. Moreover, the peak heat release and carbon monoxide production decreased by 46.6% and 50.6%, respectively. This was because the phosphonic acid fragments and pyridine ring compounds produced by the PZAF pyrolysis encouraged the development of a robust char layer. Meanwhile, the •PO radicals generated by the pyrolysis of PZAF could capture free radicals in the gas phase, ultimately ending the chain reaction of combustion. Also, mechanical properties of the PET nanocomposites were noticeably enhanced by the addition of 3 or 5 wt% PZAF.

Abstract
Most organic polymeric materials have high flammability, for which the large amounts of smoke, toxic gases, heat, and melt drips produced during their burning cause immeasurable damages to human life and property every year. Despite some desirable results having been achieved by conventional flame-retardant methods, their application is encountering more and more difficulties with the ever-increasing high flame-retardant requirements such as high flame-retardant efficiency, great persistence, low release of heat, smoke, and toxic gases, and more importantly not deteriorating or even enhancing the overall properties of polymers. Under such condition, some advanced flame-retardant methods have been developed in the past years based on "all-in-one" intumescence, nanotechnology, in situ reinforcement, intrinsic char formation, plasma treatment, biomimetic coatings, etc., which have provided potential solutions to the dilemma of conventional flame-retardant methods. This review briefly outlines the development, application, and problems of conventional flame-retardant methods, including bulk-additive, bulk-copolymerization, and surface treatment, and focuses on the raise, development, and potential application of advanced flame-retardant methods. The future development of flame-retardant methods is further discussed.

Abstract
A new series of (co)polyesters possessing pendent maleimide groups was synthesized by low temperature solution polycondensation of 4, 4’-(5-maleimidopentane-2, 2-diyl) diphenol (BPA-MA) with isophthalic acid chloride (IPC), terephthalic acid chloride (TPC) and a mixture of TPC and IPC (50:50 mol %). Copolyesters were also synthesized by polycondensation of varying compositions of BPA-MA and bisphenol-A (BPA) with IPC. The chemical structures and compositions of (co)polyesters were confirmed by NMR spectroscopy. Inherent viscosity values and number-average molecular weights of (co)polyesters were in the range 0.50–0.76 dL/g and 17,700-32,100 g/mol, respectively, indicating the formation of reasonably high molecular weight polymers. (Co)polyesters were readily soluble in common organic solvents and could be cast into tough, transparent and flexible films from chloroform solutions. (Co)polyesters exhibited 10% weight loss and glass transition temperatures in the range 464–468 and 142–178°C, respectively. A representative copolyester possessing pendant maleimide groups was chemically modified via metal-free azide-maleimide 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition click reaction with two azido compounds, namely, (azidomethyl)benzene (Bz-N3) and 1-(azidomethyl)-pyrene (Py-N3) to yield corresponding modified copolyesters in a quantitative manner.

Abstract
Traditional epoxy resins are made by the reaction of petroleum-based bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin. The disadvantages of these petroleum-based epoxy including certain biological toxicity and flammability. To solve these problems, we first synthesized a diphenol compound 3,5-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-pyrazoline (TPP), which was prepared by condensation reaction of bio-based chalcone with hydrazine hydrate to replace standard petroleum-based bisphenol A. Then it was condensed with epichlorohydrin under alkaline condition to form a fully aromatic pyrazoline ring epoxy (TPP-EP). For further research, we use 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) as the curing agent. When compared with bisphenol A epoxy resin (DGEBA/DDM), TPP-EP/DDM possessed a higher glass transition temperature (233°C vs. 176°C), and even showed that the residual carbon (in N2) and the storage modulus (at 30°C) increased by 201% and 74%, respectively. What’s more, TPP-EP/DDM system also had good inherent flame retardancy. The limiting oxygen index of TPP-EP/DDM was 33.1, reaching the V-0 level tested by UL-94. From the cone test, the THR, p-HRR, p-SPR and TSP values of TPP-EP/DDM systems also showed different degrees of reduction. Since TPP-EP contained tertiary amine active groups that could be used as a kind of catalytic curing agents for epoxy resins, thus the compound had certain self-curing properties. This work was of great significance for the synthesis of pyrazoline bio-based environmentally friendly flame-retardant epoxy resin.

Abstract
A way to suppress the deterioration in mechanical properties of polyamide 6 (PA6) is required, especially with high loading of flame retardants in the matrix. In this study, a novel aromatic Schiff base diepoxide (DES) was synthesized. It exhibited an efficient chain extension effect on PA6 and a synergistic flame-retardant effect with aluminum diethylphosphinate (AlPi) for PA6. The PA6 composite with 16 wt.% AlPi only passed UL-94 V-0 rating at 1.6 mm thickness, while the combination of 1.5 wt.% DES with 13 wt.% AlPi induced PA6 to achieve a UL-94 V-0 rating at 0.8 mm thickness. The tensile, flexural, and Izod notched impact strengths were increased by 16.2%, 16.5%, and 24.9%, respectively, compared with those of V-0 flame-retarded PA6 composites with 16 wt.% AlPi. The flame-retarded mechanism of PA6/AlPi/DES was investigated by cone calorimetry and infrared characterization of the char residues and pyrolysis products. These results showed that DES had a synergistic effect with AlPi in condensed-phase flame retardation by promoting the production of aluminum phosphorus oxides and polyphosphates in the char residues.

Abstract
Aromatic N-heterocyclic compounds are very important chemicals, which are currently produced mostly from petroleum. Here we report that a pyridazine-based compound 6-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)pyridazin-3(2H)-one (GSPZ) can be efficiently synthesized by the Friedel-Crafts reaction of guaiacol and succinic anhydride, both of which can be derived from biomass. GSPZ is then treated with bio-based epichlorohydrin to prepare the epoxy resin precursor GSPZ-EP. With 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane as curing agent, GSPZ-EP possesses higher glass transition temperature (187 oC vs. 173 oC) and shows a 140%, 70 and 93% increase in char yield (in N2), storage modulus (30 oC) and Young's modulus, respectively when compared with a standard petroleum-based bisphenol A epoxy resin. Moreover, the cured GSPZ-EP shows good intrinsic flame retardancy properties and is very close to the V-0 rating of UL-94 test. This work opens the door for production of aromatic N-heterocyclic compounds, which can be derived from biomass and employed to construct high performance polymers.

Abstract
A facile route of ‘copolymerization/blending’ was proposed to fabricate silicon/nitrogen synergistically reinforced flame-retardant PA6 nanocomposites with simultaneously improved anti-dripping and mechanical properties. Firstly, a persistently inherent flame-retardant PA6 (FR-PA6), with 1,3-bis(3-aminopropyl)tetramethyl disiloxane (MSDS), was synthesized via controllable amidation and a polycondensation reaction. Melamine cyanurate (MCA) nanoparticles as a ‘gas phase’ synergistic agent were then added into FR-PA6 to further improve its flame retardancy. The primarily obtained FR-PA6 could be extinguished after a few melt droplets dropped as ignited, and passed the V-2 rating with enhanced mechanical properties, while PA6 had no rating (NR). The prepared FR-PA6/MCA nanocomposites could attain a limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 32.7%, and passed the V-0 level with only 1 melting droplet with similar mechanical properties to PA6. Accordingly, the special ‘condensed-gas phase’ synergistic flame-retardant mechanism of FR-PA6/MCA nanocomposites was proposed through studying the residues and pyrolysis volatiles. This work provided a facile route as a model for developing functional PA6 for diverse engineering applications. A facile route was provided to prepare silicon/nitrogen synergistically reinforced flame-retardant PA6 nanocomposites with simultaneously improved anti-dripping and mechanical properties.![]()

Abstract
Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is a fiber-forming polymer with the largest output and widest usage. Its flame retardation is well-achieved via a mechanism of promoting the melt dripping while ignited. However, the melt dripping leads to secondary damage and an immediate empyrosis during fire. How to address the contradiction between the flame retardation and the melt-dripping behavior of PET via an inherent flame-retardant approach becomes a real challenge. This feature article highlights the design and synthesis of novel PET-based copolyesters with flame-retardant and antidripping performance. Three approaches are used to design these copolyesters: "ionic aggregation," "smart self-cross-linking," and "rearrangement at high temperatures." Some new conceptions are proposed accordingly. The synthesis, structure characterization, and properties of those copolyesters are discussed together with the ongoing challenges and limitations at this frontier.
