Novel Metal-Free Synthesis of 3-Substituted Isocoumarins and Evaluation of Their Fluorescence Properties for Potential Applications

A novel metal-free synthesis of 3-substituted isocoumarins through a sequential O-acylation/Wittig reaction has been established. The readily accessible (2-carboxybenzyl)-triphenylphosphonium bromide and diverse chlorides produced various 1H-isochromen-1-one in the presence of triethylamine, employing sequential O-acylation and an intramolecular Wittig reaction of acid anhydride. Reactions using these facile conditions have exhibited high functional group tolerance and excellent yields (up to 90%). Moreover, the fluorescence properties of isocoumarin derivatives were evaluated at the theoretical and experimental levels to determine their potential application in fluorescent materials. These derivatives have good photoluminescence in THF with a large Stokes shift and an absolute fluorescence quantum yield of up to 14%.

One-pot multicomponent polymerization towards heterocyclic polymers: a mini review

Multicomponent polymerization (MCP) is an innovative field related to polymer-based chemistry that offers numerous advantages derived from multicomponent reactions (MCRs). One of the key advantages of MCP is its ability to achieve high efficiency. Additionally, MCP offers other advantages, including operational simplicity, mild reaction conditions, and atom economy. MCP is a versatile technique that is used for synthesizing a wide range of analogs from several classes of heterocyclic compounds. The ring structures of heterocyclic polymers give them different mechanical, photophysical, and electrical properties to other types of polymers. Because of their unique properties, heterocyclic polymers have been widely utilized in various significant applications. MCRs are a type of chemical reaction that can be used to synthesize a wide variety of compounds in a single pot, which allows researchers to quickly assemble libraries of compounds. The development of MCPs from MCRs has made it easier to access a library of polymers with tunable structures. However, MCPs related to alkynes or acetylene triple bonds have more potential. In this review study, we provide an overview of the synthesis of heteroatom-functional polymers and alkyne-based development or other reactions such as Cu-catalyzed, catalyst-free, MCCP, MCTPs, green monomers, A3 coupling reactions, Passerini reactions, and sequence- and controlled-multicomponent polymerization. The up-to-date progress provides a convenient and efficient kind of approach related to heteroatoms and MCP synthesis, and perspectives in terms of future directions are also discussed in the study.

Synergistically Boosting the Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Functionalized Pillar[5]arenes by Polymerization and Aggregation

Supramolecular polymers based on chiral macrocycles have attracted increasing attention in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) owing to their unique properties. However, the construction of macrocyclic supramolecular polymers with highly efficient CPL properties in aggregate states still remains challenging. Herein, w e constructed a class of macrocycle-based coordination polymers by combining the planar chiral properties of pillar[5]arene with the excellent fluorescence properties of aggregation-induced emission luminogens. The formation of polymers enhances both the fluorescence and chiral properties, resulting in chiral supramolecular polymers with remarkable CPL properties. Increasing the aggregation degree of the polymers can further improve their CPL properties, as evidenced by a 21-fold increase in the dissymmetry factor and an over 25-fold increase in the fluorescence quantum yield in the aggregate state compared to the solution state. Such a synergistic effect of polymerization- and aggregation-enhanced CPL can be explained by the restriction of intramolecular motions and aggregation-induced conformation confinement. This work provides a promising method for developing highly efficient CPL supramolecular polymers.

Design, development and applications of copper-catalyzed regioselective (4 + 2) annulations between diaryliodonium salts and alkynes

Diaryliodonium salts have been extensively applied in organic synthesis as aryl cation equivalents. However, in the electrophilic reactions with alkenes or alkynes, only the electrophilic carbon of the diaryliodonium salts was involved while the other part of the aryl ring was not utilized. Herein, a reaction pattern of diaryliodonium was reported as oxa-1,4-dipoles to undergo (4 + 2) cycloaddition reactions with alkynes. Broad spectrum of the two reaction partners could be utilized in this protocol, enabling an operationally simple, high yielding, and regioselective synthetic approach to isocoumarins. Particularly, good to excellent regioselectivities were achieved for the sterically unbiased unsymmetrical diaryl acetylenes, which was challenging for other transition metal-catalyzed processes. The reaction could be scaled up with the ideal 1:1 stoichiometry and the isocoumarin type natural products Oospolactone and Thunberginol A could be obtained in one or three steps through this methodology.

One-Step Multicomponent Polymerizations for the Synthesis of Multifunctional AIE Polymers

As a new class of functional luminescent materials, polymers with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature attract much attention because of their advantages of efficient solid-state fluorescence, excellent processability, structural diversity, and multifunctionalities. Among all polymerization methods toward AIE polymers, multicomponent polymerizations (MCPs) exhibit the merits of simple operation, good atom economy, high polymerization efficiency, broad functional-group tolerance, etc. In this feature article, the recent progress on the development of one-step MCPs for the synthesis of AIE polymers is highlighted. The representative functionalities of the resulting AIE polymers are illustrated. Perspectives on the challenges and future development directions of this field are also discussed.

Effect of Cp-Ligand Methylation on Rhodium(III)-Catalyzed Annulations of Aromatic Carboxylic Acids with Alkynes: Synthesis of Isocoumarins and PAHs for Organic Light-Emitting Devices

An efficient protocol was developed for the synthesis of π-extended isocoumarins and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons based on the oxidative coupling of aromatic carboxylic acids with internal alkynes catalyzed by (cyclopentadienyl)rhodium complexes. The coupling chemoselectivity strongly depends on whether Cp or the methylated Cp* ligands are used. The pentamethyl derivative [Cp*RhCl₂ ]₂ predominantly gives isocoumarins, while the non-methylated complex [CpRhI₂ ]_n produces naphthalene derivatives. The polyaromatic carboxylic acids (such as 1-naphthoic acid, 1-pyrenecarboxylic acid, fluorene-1-carboxylic acid, and dibenzofuran-4-carboxylic acid) are suitable for this approach. A mixture of Cp*H/RhCl₃ can be used as a catalyst instead of [Cp*RhCl₂ ]₂ . The structures of 3,4-diphenylindeno[1,2-h]isochromen-1(11H)-one and 7,10-dimethyl-8,9-diphenylbenzo[pqr]tetraphene were determined by X-ray diffraction. In addition, the optical properties of the prepared compounds were studied. 7,8-Diphenyl-10H-phenaleno[1,9-gh]isochromen-10-one was employed as an emissive layer for OLED manufacturing. The OLED emits yellow-green light with a maximum intensity 1740 cd ⋅ m^-2 at 15 V.

Synthesis of fused conjugated polymers containing imidazo[2,1-b]thiazole units by multicomponent one-pot polymerization

This work describes a method for synthesis of fused cyclic conjugated polymers possessing imidazo[2,1-b]thiazole units in the main chain by reaction of heteroclyclic diazoles, dialdehydes and terminal alkyne via multicomponent one-pot processes.

Novel Organic Phototransistor-Based Nonvolatile Memory Integrated with UV-Sensing/Green-Emissive Aggregation Enhanced Emission (AEE)-Active Aromatic Polyamide Electret Layer

A novel aggregation enhanced emission (AEE)-active polyamide TPA-CN-TPE with a high photoluminesence characteristic was successfully synthesized by the direct polymerization of 4-cyanotriphenyl diamine (TPA-CN) and tetraphenylethene (TPE)-containing dicarboxylic acid. The obtained luminescent polyamide plays a significant role as the polymer electret layer in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs)-type memory. The strong green emission of TPA-CN-TPE under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation can be directly absorbed by the pentacene channel, displaying a light-induced programming and voltage-driven erasing organic phototransistor-based nonvolatile memory. Memory window can be effectively manipulated between the programming and erasing states by applying UV light illumination and electrical field, respectively. The photoinduced memory behavior can be maintained for over 10⁴ s between these two states with an on/off ratio of 10⁴, and the memory switching can be steadily operated for many cycles. With high photoresponsivity ( R) and photosensitivity ( S), this organic phototransistor integrated with AEE-active polyamide electret layer could serve as an excellent candidate for UV photodetectors in optical applications. For comparison, an AEE-inactive aromatic polyimide TPA-PIS electret with much weaker solid-state emission was also applied in the same OFETs device architecture, but this device did not show any UV-sensitive and UV-induced memory characteristics, which further confirmed the significance of the light-emitting capability of the electret layer.
