Copolymer Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Synthesis of Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) Functionalized with Hydrophobic Acrylates: A Study of Surface and Foam Properties

A series of amphiphilic statistical copolymers involving poly(ethylene glycol) monomethacrylate (PEGMA, -OH terminated, average Mn 200 molecular weight) and various hydrophobic acrylates were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The gradient copolymers were characterized by gel-permeation chromatography (GPC), ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR). Solution properties of the copolymers were investigated utilizing surface tension measurement, dynamic light-scattering (DLS), as well as foam analysis using a dynamic foam analyzer (DFA). The PEG-functionalized copolymers showed a systematic trend depending on the hydrophobic moiety in properties including surface tension, critical micelle concentration (CMC), foam lifetime, and liquid drainage from the foam. Copolymers with alkyl-acrylates exhibited the best foam lifetime, demonstrating that the choice of hydrophobic moiety is crucial for foam stability. The PEG-functionalized materials described are considered promising additives for foam-stability purposes.

Statistical and Block Copolymers of Ethylene and Vinyl Acetate via Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Polymerization

A dithiocarbamate chain transfer agent (CTA) based on Z-group substituted with a diphenyl amine (-NPh₂ ) moiety is selected for the synthesis of statistical and diblock copolymers of ethylene and vinyl acetate via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. Benefiting from the good chain growth control of polyethylene (PE), poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc), and poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) achieved with this CTA, linear diblock copolymers of the type EVA-b-PE, EVA-b-EVA, and PVAc-b-EVA are successfully synthesized. A three-arm EVA star is additionally obtained starting from a trifunctional dithiocarbamate CTA.

Preparation of well-defined 2D-lenticular aggregates by self-assembly of PNIPAM-b-PVDF amphiphilic diblock copolymers in solution

PNIPAM-b-PVDF amphiphilic block copolymers were synthesized via RAFT polymerization in dimethyl carbonate. These block copolymers were able to self-assemble into various morphologies such as spherical, crumpled, lamellar and lenticular 2D aggregates.

Evaluation of Self-Assembly Pathways to Control Crystallization-Driven Self-Assembly of a Semicrystalline P(VDF-co-HFP)-b-PEG-b-P(VDF-co-HFP) Triblock Copolymer

To date, amphiphilic block copolymers (BCPs) containing poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropene) (P(VDF-co-HFP)) copolymers are rare. At moderate content of HFP, this fluorocopolymer remains semicrystalline and is able to crystallize. Amphiphilic BCPs, containing a P(VDF-co-HFP) segment could, thus be appealing for the preparation of self-assembled block copolymer morphologies through crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) in selective solvents. Here the synthesis, characterization by 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopies, GPC, TGA, DSC, and XRD; and the self-assembly behavior of a P(VDF-co-HFP)-b-PEG-b-P(VDF-co-HFP) triblock copolymer were studied. The well-defined ABA amphiphilic fluorinated triblock copolymer was self-assembled into nano-objects by varying a series of key parameters such as the solvent and the non -solvent, the self-assembly protocols, and the temperature. A large range of morphologies such as spherical, square, rectangular, fiber-like, and platelet structures with sizes ranging from a few nanometers to micrometers was obtained depending on the self-assembly protocols and solvents systems used. The temperature-induced crystallization-driven self-assembly (TI-CDSA) protocol allowed some control over the shape and size of some of the morphologies.

“One-pot” aminolysis/thia-Michael addition preparation of well-defined amphiphilic PVDF-b-PEG-b-PVDF triblock copolymers: self-assembly behaviour in mixed solvents

Novel amphiphilic PVDF-based triblock copolymer (PVDF₅₀-b-PEG₁₃₆-b-PVDF₅₀) is synthesized using RAFT polymerization and a one-pot thia-Michael addition. Self-assembly of this ABA copolymer resulted in formation of original crystalline structures.

Grafting of Polymer Brushes from Xanthate-Functionalized Silica Particles

Monodisperse silica particles (SiPs) were surface-modified with a newly designed silane coupling agent comprising a triethoxysilane and an alkyl halide, namely, 6-(triethoxysilyl)hexyl 2-bromopropionate, which was further treated with potassium O-ethyl dithiocarbonate (PEX) to immobilize xanthate molecules on the particle surfaces. Surface-initiated macromolecular design via interchange of xanthates (MADIX) polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) was conducted with the xanthate-functionalized SiPs. The polymerization was well controlled and produced SiPs coated with poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) with a well-defined target molar mass and a graft density of about 0.2 chains nm^-2 . Dynamic light scattering and TEM measurements revealed that the hybrid particles were highly dispersible in good solvents without any aggregation. The PVAc brushes were hydrolyzed with hydrochloric acid to produce poly(vinyl alcohol) brushes on the SiP surfaces. In addition, the number of xanthate molecules introduced on the SiP surfaces could be successfully controlled by adjusting the concentration of PEX. Thus, the SiPs have two functionalities: xanthates able to act as a MADIX chain-transfer agent and alkyl bromide initiation sites for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). By using these unique bifunctional particles, mixed polymer brushes were constructed on the SiPs by MADIX of VAc followed by ATRP of styrene or methyl methacrylate.

Fluoropolymers: The Right Material for the Right Applications

An overview on the synthesis, properties, and applications of fluoropolymers (PFs) is presented. First, a non-exhaustive summary on the homopolymers from conventional radical polymerization of fluoromonomers is proposed. FPs are interesting materials thanks to their outstanding properties such as thermal, oxidative and chemical resistances, low dissipation factor, refractive index, permittivity, and water absorptivity, as well as excellent durability and weatherability. Various strategies of synthesis are proposed, especially on recent studies on radical (co)polymerization of fluoroalkenes, just like their properties and applications ranging from coatings and energy-related materials (e.g. fuel cell membranes, components for lithium ion batteries, electroactive devices, and photovoltaics) to original fluorinated elastomers, surfactants, thermoplastic elastomers, thermostables, and optical devices.

Organometallic-Mediated Radical Polymerization of Vinylidene Fluoride

An unprecedented level of control for the radical polymerization of vinylidene fluoride (VDF), yielding well-defined PVDF (at least up to 14 500 g mol^-1 ) with low dispersity (≤1.32), was achieved using organometallic-mediated radical polymerization (OMRP) with an organocobalt compound as initiator. Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-containing block copolymers are difficult to prepare and still very rare in spite of their potential use in high added value applications. This communication describes in detail the synthesis of unprecedented poly(ethyl vinyl ether)-block-poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PEVE-b-PVDF) block copolymers (BCP) via the sequential combination of cationic RAFT polymerization of vinyl ethers and radical RAFT polymerization of vinylidene fluoride (VDF). Dithiocarbamate chain transfer agents were found to efficiently control the radical RAFT polymerization of VDF and to be suitable for the preparation of PEVE-b-PVDF BCP. These new block copolymers composed of incompatible polymer segments may find applications owing to their phase segregation and self-assembly behavior.
