Optimizing Nanofluidic Energy Harvesting in Synthetic Clay-based Membranes by Annealing Treatment

Nanofluidic energy harvesting from salinity gradients is studied in 2D nanomaterials-based membranes with promising performance as high ion selectivity and fast ion transport. In addition, moving forward to scalable, feasible systems requires environmentally friendly materials to make the application sustainable. Clay-based membranes are attractive for being environmentally friendly, non-hazardous, and easy to manipulate materials. However, achieving underwater stability for clay-based membranes remains challenging. In this work, the synthetic clay Laponite is used to prepare clay-based membranes with high stability and excellent performance for osmotic energy harvesting. The Laponite membranes (Lap-membranes) are stabilized by low-temperature annealing treatment to effectively reduce the interlayer space, achieving a continuous operation under salinity gradients. Furthermore, the Lap-membranes conserve integrity while soaking in water for more than one month. The output power density improves from ≈4.97 W m-2 on the pristine membrane to ≈9.89 W m-2 in the membrane treated 12 h at 300 °C from a 30-fold concentration gradient. Especially, It is found that the presence of interlayer water to be favorable for ion transport. Different mechanisms are proposed in the Lap-membranes involved for efficient ion selectivity and the states found with varying annealing temperatures. This work demonstrates the potential application of Laponite based nanomaterials for nanofluidic energy harvesting.

Adsorption of Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions from wastewater onto bentonite and bentonite/GO composite

Two superior adsorbents, namely bentonite and graphene oxide (GO), were hybridised to study the removal of copper and nickel ions from synthetic and industrial wastewater. The as-synthesised GO, bentonite/GO and bentonite were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and N₂ adsorption-desorption analysis. The factors influencing the adsorption behaviours including contact time, initial solution pH, ionic strength, initial concentration of metal ions, temperature and adsorbent dosage were systematically investigated by batch equilibrium method. The adsorption equilibrium for copper and nickel onto bentonite was attained in 90 min while equilibrium was reached in 60 min on bentonite/GO. The adsorption of copper and nickel was pH-dependent in the range from pH 2 to pH 7 and from pH 2 to pH 8. Pseudo-first-order kinetic model excellently described the adsorption of copper and nickel onto bentonite and bentonite/GO. The equilibrium adsorption data was well described by the Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum adsorption capacity was 248.9 mg/g, 558.4 mg/g, 215.8 mg/g and 402.5 mg/g for bentonite-copper, bentonite/GO-copper, bentonite-nickel and bentonite/GO-nickel adsorption systems, respectively. The bentonite/GO composite exhibited a higher adsorption capacity of both cations from synthetic wastewater than pure bentonite owning to the synergistic effect between bentonite and GO. In all adsorption studies, copper was more efficiently removed than nickel due to its higher tendency to form bond with adsorbent surfaces. The adsorption of copper and nickel on bentonite/GO was mainly due to cation exchange, intermolecular and electrostatic interactions and physisorption dominated the adsorption processes. The practical application of bentonite/GO on adsorption of copper was investigated using real wastewater and its removal efficiency was beyond 98%. The excellent adsorption performances of composites for the copper and nickel removal from wastewater demonstrated its significant potential for pollution mitigations.

Organic Intercalant-Free Liquid Exfoliation Route to Layered Metal-Oxide Nanosheets via the Control of Electrostatic Interlayer Interaction

A scalable organic intercalant-free liquid exfoliation route to 2D nanosheets (NSs) of layered transition-metal oxides (TMOs) is developed by employing hydronium-intercalated derivatives as precursors. The replacement of interlayer alkali metal ions with larger hydronium ions via acid treatment makes possible the efficient liquid exfoliation of TMOs without any assistance of organic intercalant cations. Not only a weakening of interlayer electrostatic interaction upon hydronium intercalation but also an efficient solvation of deintercalated hydronium ions via hydrogen bonding with polar solvents is mainly responsible for the high efficacy of hydronium-intercalated TMOs as precursors for liquid exfoliation. The nature of the solvent employed also has a profound effect on the exfoliation yield of these TMO NSs; viscosity, surface tension, density, and Hansen solubility parameter as well as the capability to solvate the exfoliated NSs and hydronium ions are crucial factors for determining the exfoliation efficiency of the hydronium-intercalated precursor. All the obtained Ti_{1- x}O₂, MnO₂, and RuO₂ NSs show highly anisotropic 2D morphologies and distinct negative surface charges with a zeta potential of -30 to -50 mV. Such distinct surface charges of these NSs render them versatile hybridization matrices for the synthesis of novel nanohybrids with enhanced functionalities. The hybridization with the liquid-exfoliated TMO NSs is quite effective in improving the photocatalytic activity of CdS and the electrode functionalities of graphene and graphene-layered double hydroxide nanohybrids. The present study underscores the usefulness of the present liquid exfoliation method in synthesizing organic-free TMO NSs and their nanohybrids as well as in widening the application field of exfoliated TMO NSs.
