Capillary Flow-MRI: Quantifying Micron-Scale Cooperativity in Complex Dispersions

Strongly confined flow of particulate fluids is encountered in applications ranging from three-dimensional (3D) printing to the spreading of foods and cosmetics into thin layers. When flowing in constrictions with gap sizes, w, within 102 times the mean size of particles or aggregates, d, structured fluids experience enhanced bulk velocities and inhomogeneous viscosities, as a result of so-called cooperative, or nonlocal, particle interactions. Correctly predicting cooperative flow for a wide range of complex fluids requires high-resolution flow imaging modalities applicable in situ to even optically opaque fluids. To this goal, we here developed a pressure-driven high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) velocimetry platform, comprising a pressure controller connected to a capillary. Wall properties and diameter could be modified respectively as hydrophobic/hydrophilic, or within w ∼ 100-540 μm. By achieving a high spatial resolution of 9 μm, flow cooperativity length scales, ξ, down to 15 μm in Carbopol with d ∼ 2 μm could be quantified by means of established physical models with an accuracy of 13%. The same approach was adopted for a heterogeneous fat crystal dispersion (FCD) with d and ξ values up to an order of magnitude higher than those for Carbopol. We found that for strongly confined flow of Carbopol in the 100 μm capillary, ξ is independent of flow conditions. For the FCD, ξ increases with gap size and applied pressures over 0.25-1 bar. In both samples, nonlocal interactions span domains up to about 5-8 particles but, at the highest confinement degree explored, ∼8% for FCD, domains of only ∼2 particles contribute to cooperative flow. The developed flow-MRI platform is easily scalable to ultrahigh field MRI conditions for chemically resolved velocimetric measurements of, e.g., complex fluids with anisotropic particles undergoing alignment. Future potential applications of the platform encompass imaging extrusion under confinement during the 3D printing of complex dispersions or in in vitro vascular and perfusion studies.

Extracting microscopic insight from transient dielectric measurements during large amplitude oscillatory shear

Probing the transient microstructure of soft matter far from equilibrium is an ongoing challenge to understanding material processing. In this work, we investigate inverse worm-like micelles undergoing large amplitude oscillatory shear using time-resolved dielectric spectroscopy. By controlling the Weissenburg number, we compare the non-linear microstructure response of branched and unbranched worm-like micelles and isolate distinct elastic effects that manifest near flow reversal. We validate our dielectric measurements with small angle neutron scattering and employ sequence of physical processes to disentangle the elastic and viscous contributions of the stress.

Demonstration of a Novel Charge-Free Reverse Wormlike Micelle System

We demonstrate a novel charge-free reverse wormlike micelle (RWLM) consisting of a ternary mixture of a nonionic amphiphilic block copolymer, fatty acid alkyl ester oil, and water under ambient conditions. Nonionic amphiphile tetra-[poly(oxyethylene)-poly(oxybutylene)]pentaerythrityl ether (TEBPE) self-assembled into spheroid-type micelles in nonaqueous media isopropyl myristate (IPM) with viscosity comparable to that of IPM. The addition of water increases viscosity only slightly up to a certain concentration of water and then drastically, demonstrating the sphere-to-wormlike micelle transition as confirmed by small-angle X-ray scattering. Further increase in water decreases the viscosity after attaining a maximum value. The zero shear viscosity (η₀) of the 10 wt % TEBPE/IPM system reached the maximum at 2.6 wt % water and ca. 56 Pa·s, which is ∼fivefold higher than that of water. Dynamic rheological measurements on the highly viscous solutions confirmed the viscoelastic behavior and could be described by the Maxwell model. Conductivity, measured in the presence of a conductive probe, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, was found to be higher for viscous samples compared to the nonviscous samples, suggesting the static percolation caused by the RWLM formation. Decrease in η₀ and conductivity beyond a maximum suggests the shortening of reverse micelles. A similar behavior has been observed in other fatty acid alkyl ester oils of different alkyl chain lengths. Note that most of the RWLM systems previously reported are based on phosphatidylcholine (PC). Formulation and structure-properties related to non-PC-based RWLMs have been rarely explored. Non-PC-based RWLMs using chemically stable and low-cost synthetic molecules can be applied not only in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics but also in a wide range of applications including drag reduction agents for nonaqueous fluids and as a template for nanomaterial synthesis.

Branching and alignment in reverse worm-like micelles studied with simultaneous dielectric spectroscopy and RheoSANS

Topology and branching play an important but poorly understood role in controlling the mechanical and flow properties of worm-like micelles (WLMs). To address the challenge of characterizing branching during flow of WLMs, dielectric spectroscopy, rheology, and small-angle neutron scattering (dielectric RheoSANS) experiments are performed simultaneously to measure the concurrent evolution of conductivity, permittivity, stress, and segmental anisotropy of reverse WLMs under steady-shear flow. Reverse WLMs are microemulsions comprised of the phospholipid surfactant lecithin dispersed in oil with water solubilized in the micelle core. Their electrical properties are independently sensitive to the WLM topology and dynamics. To isolate the effects of branching, dielectric RheoSANS is performed on WLMs in n-decane, which show fast breakage times and exhibit a continuous branching transition for water-to-surfactant ratios above the corresponding maximum in zero-shear viscosity. The unbranched WLMs in n-decane exhibit only subtle decreases in their electrical properties under flow that are driven by chain alignment and structural anisotropy in the plane perpendicular to the electric field and incident neutron beam. These results are in qualitative agreement with additional measurements on a purely linear WLM system in cyclohexane despite differences in breakage kinetics and a stronger tendency for the latter to shear band. In contrast, the branched micelles in n-decane (higher water content) undergo non-monotonic changes in permittivity and more pronounced decreases in conductivity under flow. The combined steady-shear electrical and microstructural measurements are capable, for the first time, of resolving branch breaking at low shear rates prior to alignment-driven anisotropy at higher shear rates.
