Selective hydrogenation of dimethyl terephthalate over a potassium-modified Ni/SiO2 catalyst

Selective hydrogenation of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) is an ideal way to prepare 1,4-cyclohexane dicarboxylate (DMCD), an important intermediate and monomer. Even though noble metal-based catalysts (e.g., Ru, Pd) have been developed for selective hydrogenation of DMT, the use of non-precious Ni catalysts to achieve high activity and selectivity is still challenging. In this study, we present that only 0.5 wt% of KF by post-impregnated doping can significantly improve the performance of Ni/SiO₂ catalysts (83% vs. 96% selectivity; 41% vs. 95% conversion). The selectivity of DMCD can be up to 97%, which is the highest reported over Ni catalysts. The boosting effect of KF modification might be due to higher amounts of Ni(0) species and lower amounts of moderate acidic sites, which are beneficial for selective hydrogenation of phenyl rings over hydrogenolysis of ester groups.

Core-Shell Structured Magnetic Carboxymethyl Cellulose-Based Hydrogel Nanosorbents for Effective Adsorption of Methylene Blue from Aqueous Solution

This article reports effective removal of methylene blue (MB) dyes from aqueous solutions using a novel magnetic polymer nanocomposite. The core-shell structured nanosorbents was fabricated via coating Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles with a layer of hydrogel material, that synthesized by carboxymethyl cellulose cross-linked with poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide). Some physico-chemical properties of the nanosorbents were characterized by various testing methods. The nanosorbent could be easily separated from aqueous solutions by an external magnetic field and the mass fraction of outer hydrogel shell was 20.3 wt%. The adsorption performance was investigated as the effects of solution pH, adsorbent content, initial dye concentration, and contact time. The maximum adsorption capacity was obtained at neutral pH of 7 with a sorbent dose of 1.5 g L⁻¹. The experimental data of MB adsorption were fit to Langmuir isotherm model and Pseudo-second-order kinetic model with maximum adsorption of 34.3 mg g⁻¹. XPS technique was applied to study the mechanism of adsorption, electrostatic attraction and physically adsorption may control the adsorption behavior of the composite nanosorbents. In addition, a good reusability of 83.5% MB recovering with adsorption capacity decreasing by 16.5% over five cycles of sorption/desorption was observed.

Stabilization of acid-rich bio-oil by catalytic mild hydrotreating

Although liquid products derived from the pyrolysis of biomass are promising for the production of petroleum-like hydrocarbon fuels, the catalytic burden of hydrodeoxygenation must be reduced to achieve feasible upgrading processes. Herein, mild hydrotreating of an acid-rich biomass pyrolysis oil (bio-oil) with an unusually high total acid number (588 mg KOH/g bio-oil) was performed to stabilize the low-quality bio-oil. Ru-added TiO₂-supported transition metal catalysts stabilized the bio-oil by reducing its acidity more compared to what could be achieved by Ru-free catalysts; this process also leads to lower loss of organic compounds compared to when using a Ru/TiO₂ catalyst. Based on the performance of transition metal catalysts, including Ni, Co, and Cu, supported on TiO₂, tungstate-zirconia, or SiO₂, supported bimetallic catalysts were prepared by adding Ru to the TiO₂-supported metal catalysts. The bimetallic catalysts Ru/Ni/TiO₂ and Ru/Co/TiO₂ exhibited good decarboxylation activity for the removal of carboxylic acids and a higher yield of organic compounds compared to that provided by Ru, which can be deemed appropriate for feedstocks when hydrodeoxygenation needs to suppress the loss of organic reactants. Using these catalysts, the carboxylic acid concentration was reduced to 319-323 mg KOH/g bio-oil with organic yields of 62-63 wt% at reaction temperatures 150-170 °C lower than the temperature required for direct conversion of carboxylic acids to alcohols or deoxygenates. The improved catalytic hydrotreating activity of Ru-added transition metals can be attributed to the high acid site densities of these catalysts along with their improved hydrogenation activities.

Biocompatible Heat-Shock Protein Inhibitor-Delivered Flowerlike Short-Wave Infrared Nanoprobe for Mild Temperature-Driven Highly Efficient Tumor Ablation

Multifunctional nanomaterials for dual-mode imaging guided cancer therapy are highly desirable in clinical applications. Herein, a flowerlike NiS₂-coated NaLuF₄:Nd (Lu:Nd@NiS₂) nanoparticle was synthesized as a novel therapeutic agent for short-wave infrared light imaging and magnetic resonance imaging to guide photothermal therapy (PTT). The material was then loaded with phenolic epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG), which is a natural heat-shock protein 90 (HSP90) inhibitor. Upon near infrared irradiation, EGCG was released from the Lu:Nd@NiS₂-EGCG, which bound HSP90 and reduced cell tolerance to heat, resulting in a better therapeutic effect at the same elevated temperature. Therefore, with minimal side effects and remarkable antitumor efficacy in vivo, Lu:Nd@NiS₂-EGCG appeared to be a promising photothermal agent for enhanced PTT.
