The Effect of Carbon Nanofibers on the Mechanical Performance of Epoxy-Based Composites: A Review

This review is a fundamental tool for researchers and engineers involved in the design and optimization of fiber-reinforced composite materials. The aim is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the mechanical performance of composites with epoxy matrices reinforced with carbon nanofibers (CNFs). The review includes studies investigating the static mechanical response through three-point bending (3PB) tests, tensile tests, and viscoelastic behavior tests. In addition, the properties of the composites' resistance to interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), mode I and mode II interlaminar fracture toughness (ILFT), and low-velocity impact (LVI) are analyzed. The incorporation of small amounts of CNFs, mostly between 0.25 and 1% by weight was shown to have a notable impact on the static and viscoelastic properties of the composites, leading to greater resistance to time-dependent deformation and better resistance to creep. ILSS and ILFT modes I and II of fiber-reinforced composites are critical parameters in assessing structural integrity through interfacial bonding and were positively affected by the introduction of CNFs. The response of composites to LVI demonstrates the potential of CNFs to increase impact strength by reducing the energy absorbed and the size of the damage introduced. Epoxy matrices reinforced with CNFs showed an average increase in stiffness of 15% and 20% for bending and tensile, respectively. The laminates, on the other hand, showed an increase in bending stiffness of 20% and 15% for tensile and modulus, respectively. In the case of ILSS and ILFT modes I and II, the addition of CNFs promoted average increases in the order of 50%, 100%, and 50%, respectively.

Effect of Carbon Nanofibers on the Strain Rate and Interlaminar Shear Strength of Carbon/Epoxy Composites

The static bending properties, different strain rates and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) with two epoxy resins nano-enhanced with carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are studied. The effect on ILSS behavior from aggressive environments, such as hydrochloric acid (HCl), sodium hydroxide (NaOH), water and temperature, are also analyzed. The laminates with Sicomin resin and 0.75 wt.% CNFs and with Ebalta resin with 0.5 wt.% CNFs show significant improvements in terms of bending stress and bending stiffness, up to 10%. The values of ILLS increase for higher values of strain rate, and in both resins, the nano-enhanced laminates with CNFs show better results to strain-rate sensitivity. A linear relationship between the logarithm of the strain rate was determined to predict the bending stress, bending stiffness, bending strain and ILSS for all laminates. The aggressive solutions significantly affect the ILSS, and their effects are strongly dependent on the concentration. Nevertheless, the alkaline solution promotes higher decreases in ILSS and the addition of CNFs is not beneficial. Regardless of the immersion in water or exposure to high temperatures a decrease in ILSS is observed, but, in this case, CNF content reduces the degradation of the laminates.

Bimetallic nickel/manganese phosphate–carbon nanofiber electrocatalyst for the oxidation of formaldehyde in alkaline medium

The development of earth-abundant transition metal-based catalysts, supported by a conductive carbonaceous matrix, has received great attention in the field of conversion of formaldehyde derivatives into toxic-free species. Herein, we report a comprehensive investigation of bimetallic electrocatalyst activity towards the electrooxidation of formaldehyde. The bimetallic phosphate catalyst is prepared by co-precipitation of Ni and Mn phosphate precursors using a simple reflux approach. Then the bimetallic catalyst is produced by mixing the Ni/Mn with carbon fibres (CNFs). The structural properties and crystallinity of the catalyst were investigated by using several techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Brunauer Emmett−Teller theory. The system performance was studied under potentiostatic conditions. Some theoretical thermodynamic and kinetic models were applied to assess the system performance. Accordingly, key electrochemical parameters, including surface coverage (Γ) of active species, charge transfer rate (k_s), diffusion coefficient of the formaldehyde (D), and catalytic rate constant (k_cat) were calculated at Γ = 1.690 × 10⁻⁴ mmol cm⁻², k_s = 1.0800 s⁻¹, D = 1.185 × 10⁻³ cm² s⁻¹ and k_cat = 1.08 × 10⁵ cm³ mol⁻¹ s⁻¹. These findings demonstrate the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity of formaldehyde electrooxidation on nickel/manganese phosphate- CNFs in alkaline medium.

The catalytic performance of bimetallic Ni/Mn phosphate–carbon nanofiber composite catalyst is better than mono metallic catalysts toward electrooxidation of formaldehyde.

Water Purification through a Novel Electrospun Carbon Nanofiber Membrane

Here, we report water purification through novel polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based carbon nanofibers synthesized through the electrospinning technique. In our novel approach, we mix PVA and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) with green tea solutions with different concentrations to synthesize carbon-based nanofibers (CNFs) and further calcine at 280 °C for carbonization. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results show the diameter of the nanofibers to be ∼500 nm, which decreases by about 50% after carbonization, making them more suitable candidates for the filtration process. Next, using these carbon nanofibers, we prepare filters for water purification. The synthesized CNF filters show excellent performance and successful removal of contaminants from the water by analyzing the CNF-based filters before and after the filtration of water through SEM and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. Our SEM and EDX results indicate the presence of various nanoparticles consisting of different elements such as Mg, Na, Ti, S, Si, and Fe on the filters, after the filtration of water. Additionally, the SEM results show that PVA and TEOS concentrations play an important role in the formation, uniformity, homogeneity, and particularly in the reduction of the nanofiber diameter.

Efficient Improvement in Fracture Toughness of Laminated Composite by Interleaving Functionalized Nanofibers

Functionalized polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers were used in the present investigation to enhance the fracture behavior of carbon epoxy composite in order to prevent delamination if any crack propagates in the resin rich area. The main intent of this investigation was to analyze the efficiency of PAN nanofiber as a reinforcing agent for the carbon fiber-based epoxy structural composite. The composites were fabricated with stacked unidirectional carbon fibers and the PAN powder was functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and then used as reinforcement. The fabricated composites’ fracture behavior was analyzed through a double cantilever beam test and the energy release rate of the composites was investigated. The neat PAN and functionalized PAN-reinforced samples had an 18% and a 50% increase in fracture energy, respectively, compared to the control composite. In addition, the samples reinforced with functionalized PAN nanofibers had 27% higher interlaminar strength compared to neat PAN-reinforced composite, implying more efficient stress transformation as well as stress distribution from the matrix phase (resin-rich area) to the reinforcement phase (carbon/phase) of the composites. The enhancement of fracture toughness provides an opportunity to alleviate the prevalent issues in laminated composites for structural operations and facilitate their adoption in industries for critical applications.

Mechanical and Dielectric Properties of Aligned Electrospun Fibers

This review paper examines the current state-of-the-art in fabrication of aligned fibers via electrospinning techniques and the effects of these techniques on the mechanical and dielectric properties of electrospun fibers. Molecular orientation, system configuration to align fibers, and post-drawing treatment, like hot/cold drawing process, contribute to better specific strength and specific stiffness properties of nanofibers. The authors suggest that these improved, aligned nanofibers, when applied in composites, have better mechanical and dielectric properties for many structural and multifunctional applications, including advanced aerospace applications and energy storage devices. For these applications, most fiber alignment electrospinning research has focused on either mechanical property improvement or dielectric property improvement alone, but not both simultaneously. Relative to many other nanofiber formation techniques, the electrospinning technique exhibits superior nanofiber formation when considering cost and manufacturing complexity for many situations. Even though the dielectric property of pure nanofiber mat may not be of general interest, the analysis of the combined effect of mechanical and dielectric properties is relevant to the present analysis of improved and aligned nanofibers. A plethora of nanofibers, in particular, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) electrospun nanofibers, are discussed for their mechanical and dielectric properties. In addition, other types of electrospun nanofibers are explored for their mechanical and dielectric properties. An exploratory study by the author demonstrates the relationship between mechanical and dielectric properties for specimens obtained from a rotating mandrel horizontal setup.

Improved thermomechanical and electrical properties of reduced graphene oxide reinforced polyaniline - dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid/divinylbenzene nanocomposites

HYPOTHESIS

Various efforts are going on to improve the electrical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. Conducting polymer is one the promising material to achieve the desired electrical properties of CFRP composites without compromising the mechanical properties as a lighting sticking material.

EXPERIMENTS

In present study, in addition to conducting polymer polyaniline (PANI), another conducting phase reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was incorporated in PANI based system. The RGO was synthesized and incorporated in different weight (0-0.5 wt%) fraction in dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) doped PANI-divinylbenzene (DVB) polymer to get PANI-DBSA/DVB nanocomposite. The mechanical and interfacial interaction was analyzed by universal testing machine (UTM) and transmitted electron microscopy (TEM).

FINDINGS

The addition of optimum 0.3 wt% RGO improved flexural strength and modulus of PANI-DSBA/RGO-DVB composite by 153% and 32% respectively over neat PANI-DBSA/DVB nanocomposite. The maximum electrical conductivity 0.301 S/cm, glass transition temperature (T_g) and thermal stability of nanocomposite realized at 0.3 wt% of RGO. Raman spectroscopy and HRTEM confirmed the improvement of interfacial bonding by H-bonding and π-π interaction. For the 1st time we are reporting RGO utilisation for the improvement of thermomechanical and electrical interfacial properties of PANI-DBSA/DVB nanocomposite for the structural applications.

Synergistic effect on static and dynamic mechanical properties of carbon fiber-multiwalled carbon nanotube hybrid polycarbonate composites

The synergistic effect of reinforced non-functionalized and functionalized MWCNTs accompanied by CF is observed on the mechanical properties in a polycarbonate matrix.
