Abstract
In recent years, the field of Supramolecular Chemistry has witnessed tremendous progress owing to the development of versatile optical sensors for the detection of harmful biological analytes. Nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBD) is one such scaffold that has been exploited as fluorescent probes for selective recognition of harmful analytes and their optical imaging in various cell lines including HeLa, PC3, A549, SMMC-7721, MDA-MB-231, HepG2, MFC-7, etc. The NBD-derived molecular probes are majorly synthesized from the chloro derivative of NBD via nucleophilic aromatic substitution. This general NBD moiety ligation method to nucleophiles has been leveraged to develop various derivatives for sensing analytes. NBD-derived probes are extensively used as optical sensors because of remarkable properties like excellent stability, large Stoke's shift, high efficiency and stability, visible excitation, easy use, low cost, and high quantum yield. This article reviewed NBD-based probes for the years 2017-2023 according to the sensing of analyte(s), including cations, anions, thiols, and small molecules like hydrogen sulfide. The sensing mechanism, designing of the probe, plausible binding mechanism, and biological application of chemosensors are summarized. The real-time application of optical sensors has been discussed by various methods, such as paper strips, molecular logic gates, smartphone detection, development of test kits, etc. This article will update the researchers with the in vivo and in vitro biological applicability of NBD-based molecular probes and challenges the research fraternity to design, propose, and develop better chemosensors in the future possessing commercial utility.

Abstract
Metal cations such as Zn2+, Al3+, Hg2+, Cd2+, Sn2+, Fe2+, Fe3+ and Cu2+ play important roles in biology, medicine, and the environment. However, when these are not maintained in proper concentration, they can be lethal to life. Therefore, selective sensing of metal cations is of great importance in understanding various metabolic processes, disease diagnosis, checking the purity of environmental samples, and detecting toxic analytes. Schiff base probes have been largely used in designing fluorescent sensors for sensing metal ions because of their easy processing, availability, fast response time, and low detection limit. Herein, an in-depth report on metal ions recognition by some Schiff base fluorescent sensors, their sensing mechanism, their practical applicability in cell imaging, building logic gates, and analysis of real-life samples has been presented. The metal ions having biological, industrial, and environmental significance are targeted. The compiled information is expected to prove beneficial in designing and synthesis of the related Schiff base fluorescent sensors.

Abstract
Fluorescein molecules are extensively used to develop fluorescent probes for various analytes due to their excellent photophysical properties and the spirocyclic structure. The main structural modification of fluorescein occurs at the carboxyl group where different groups can be easily introduced to produce the spirolactam structure which is non-fluorescent. The spirolactam ring opening accounts for the fluorescence and the dual sensing of analytes using fluorescent sensors is still a topic of high interest. There is an increase in the number of dual sensors developed in the past five years and quite a good number of fluorescein derivatives were also reported based on reversible mechanisms. This review analyses environmentally and biologically important cations such as Cu2+, Hg2+, Fe3+, Pd2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, and Mg2+; anions (F-, OCl-) and small molecules (thiols, CO and H2S). Structural modifications, binding mechanisms, different strategies and a comparative study for selected cations, anions and molecules are outlined in the article.

Abstract
A two-step synthetic method to prepare a highly sensitive and selective chemosensor 5'-hydroxymethyl fluorescein (5'-HMF) is described herein. This sensor was explored as a colorimetric sensor for naked-eye detection of cyanide ion in the biological fluid as well as in organic and aqueous media. The addition of cyanide ion to 5'-HMF resulted in a rapid change in color in aqueous medium from light green to dark fluorescent green, and in acetonitrile from light pink to purple. A significant bathochromic shift in the absorption spectra enables cyanide ion to be detected by naked eyes in water and acetonitrile without any interference of the competing anions such as, AcO-, F- and SCN- in aqueous solution. Using the 1HNMR titration experiments and Job's plot from absorbance spectroscopy, the interaction of CN- ion with 5'-HMF has been investigated and binding stoichiometry was found to be 1:2 (5'-HMF to CN-). The limit of detection (LOD) of the sensor for CN- was 3.68 μM in water with a linearity (R2 = 0.9923) in the range of 0.50 to 30.0 μM concentration assuming 1:2 (5'-HMF to CN-) binding stoichiometry. In addition, the sensor 5'-HMF sensed the CN- ion in human saliva with the LOD as 7.0 μM in aq. medium.

Abstract
A facile green method for the mechanochemical synthesis of Schiff base phenylhydrazono-N-methylene fluorescein (PHMF) with 95% yields has been established. The synthesized receptor assists in the naked-eye detection of CN- ions in organic and aqueous media, and F- ions in acetonitrile over a series of anions with a color transfer from colorless to pink. A redshift of 160 nm of PHMF-CN- complex in the absorbance spectrum and a turn-on response in the fluorescence spectrum were observed, respectively, at λmax 345 to 515 and 519 nm. A strong interaction of PHMF with CN- and F- ions forming a 1:3 binding stoichiometry has been noted in this study. In an aqueous medium for CN- ion, the lower limit of detection (LOD) is defined as 9.204 nM, which is quite better in terms of sensitivity. In addition, PHMF's paper-strip sensor for rapid real-time CN- ion sensing was found to be sufficiently sensitive to successfully detect CN- ion in water and a solid state, resulting in a portable device for detecting cyanide ions. In acetonitrile, the receptor's ability to detect CN- ion in cigarette smoke residue was also satisfactorily achieved. Graphical Abstract.

Abstract
Environmentally benign mechanochemistry-assisted high-yielding synthesis of fluorescein-phenylalaninol (FPA) conjugates as a Schiff base receptor is reported herein. This newly synthesized fluorescent probe is found to be most exciting and efficient because of its simultaneous detection and removal of mercury ions (Hg2+) in aqueous medium and industrial effluents through precipitate formation. The receptor successfully worked as a chemosensor in selectively sensing the Hg2+ ion through the rapid transition from yellow to pink in the colorimetric as well as quenching of fluorescence intensity in the fluorometric assay. The removal of mercury ions was confirmed by the inductively coupled plasma analysis of the supernatant. The lower detection limit of Hg2+ ions for the receptor FPA is 1.65 and 0.34 μM as determined through absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic methods, respectively. The high removal efficiency (∼98%) of the mercury ions is promising and could be achieved via the formation of the complex in a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio of receptor to Hg2+ ions. Furthermore, this probe may be a practical alternative for use in a paper-based portable device for achieving on-site detection of mercury ions in solid, solution, and vapor phases.

Abstract
A colorimetric and turn-on fluorescent chemodosimeter 1 based on diaminomaleonitrile was synthesized for Cu2+ detection. It showed high selectivity and sensitivity towards Cu2+ over the other tested metal ions. Probe 1 in acetonitrile exhibited a strong absorption band at 530 nm and weak fluorescence emission when excited at 480 nm, while the addition of Cu2+ could lead to a 30-nm blue shift of the absorption band and a remarkable fluorescence enhancement. Moreover, the detection limit of probe 1 for Cu2+ was calculated to be 28 nM. Quite different from the reported mechanism based on a metal-complexation induced fluorescence enhancement, the sensing mechanism was proved to be based on the Cu2+-promoted hydrolysis reaction, which was confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectrum analysis. Studies on probe 2 were carried out to verify the universality of this sensing mechanism.

Abstract
A novel bifunctional sensor based on diarylethene with a benzyl carbazate unit was synthesized successfully. It not only served as a colorimetric sensor for the recognition of Cu2+ by showing changes in absorption spectra and solution color, but also acted as a fluorescent sensor for the detection of Cd2+ through obvious emission intensity enhancement and fluorescence color change. The sensor exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Cu2+ and Cd2+, and the limits of detection for Cu2+ and Cd2+ were 8.36 × 10−8 mol L−1 and 1.71 × 10−7 mol L−1, respectively, which were much lower than those reported by the WHO and EPA in drinking water. Furthermore, its application in practical samples demonstrated that the sensor can be effectively applied for the detection of Cu2+ and Cd2+ in practical water samples. A bifunctional sensor for colorimetric recognition of Cu2+ and fluorescent detection of Cd2+ was synthesized. It not only showed high selectivity and sensitivity to Cu2+ and Cd2+, but also could be used in practical water samples with high accuracy.![]()

Abstract
A multi-hydroxyl Schiff-base derivative, N-2'-hydroxyl-1'-naphthyl methylene-2-amino phenol (HNMAP), was synthesized and characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy. It was noted to find there was great effect for solvent and pH on the UV-vis spectroscopy of HNMAP. Especially, some metal ions could make its UV-vis spectra changed regularly with different time-resolved effects. For example, a real-time and multi-wavelength response to Fe2+ at 520 nm, 466 nm and 447 nm and a quite slow one about 26 min to Fe3+ at 447 nm and 466 nm, respectively. Under the optimized conditions, the changes in the corresponding absorption intensities at above wavelengths were in proportion to cFe2+ or cFe3+ during respectively partitioned linear ranges, which realized to quantitatively detect Fe2+ or Fe3+ with a large linear range more than two orders of magnitude. A 1:1 complex mode for HNMAP-Fe2+ and 1:2 for HNMAP-Fe3+ were proposed from UV-vis spectral titration and Job's plot. Abstract
Two new C2-symmetric N,N'-benzylated bis(amino amides) have been synthesised and their interaction with different transition metals studied using a variety of techniques including UV-Vis and CD spectroscopy or ESI-MS. The determination of the corresponding stability constants with Cu2+ has been possible, in H2O/CH3CN 7/3 v/v, for one of these ligands (4) using potentiometric titrations. The results obtained reveal that N-benzylation affords significant changes to their properties and is accompanied by an appreciable decrease in the corresponding complexation stability constants. However, this, along with the low kinetics associated to Ni2+, facilitates the recognition of Cu2+ by 4 that can be followed by the naked-eye up to the submillimolar range. Very interestingly, the chiral nature of this ligand provides an intense and well defined CD curve for the corresponding Cu2+ complex, very sensitive to the coordination geometry, facilitating the analysis of this interaction even at the μM range. The formation by both ligands (3 and 4) of square planar complexes with Cu2+ and Ni2+ displaying a 1 : 1 stoichiometry was confirmed by their X-ray crystal structures.
