Sulfonated β-cyclodextrins: efficient supramolecular organocatalysts for diverse organic transformations

The present review summarizes various organic transformations carried out by using sulfonated β-cyclodextrins such as β-cyclodextrin sulfonic acid, β-cyclodextrin propyl sulfonic acid, and β-cyclodextrin butyl sulfonic acid as an efficient, supramolecular reusable catalyst under diverse reaction conditions.

Self-assembly of supra-amphiphiles building block fabricated by β-cyclodextrin and adamantane-based ionic liquid

A new adamantane-based ionic liquid, (11-(((-adamantane-1-carbonyl)oxy)undecyl)-1-methylimidazol-3-ium bromide (AD-C₁₁im), was synthesized from 1-adamantanecarboxylic acid and observed that it can aggregate into micelles in aqueous solution. A number of experiments were conducted to understand the self-assembly of supra-amphiphiles building block fabricated by β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and adamantane-based ionic liquid at diverse molar ratios. Studies revealed that host–guest interaction between the adamantane group and β-CD occurred and AD-C₁₁im@1β-CD building block formed when same amount β-CD was added. Then the micelles aggregates formed by AD-C₁₁im only turned into spherical vesicles, which was confirmed by AFM, DLS and TEM. Besides, according to the results of AFM, it can be confirmed that the vesicles were monolayer structure. When double amount β-CD was added, both the adamantane group and the hydrophobic chain were encapsulated by β-CD and AD-C₁₁im@2β-CD building block formed. Thus the aggregations changed from vesicles to net-like nanofiber, which was observed by TEM. When the β-CD concentration increased to 40 mM, the formation of light blue hydrogel was observed during the self-assembling process of AD-C₁₁im@2β-CD building block.

A triply-responsive supramolecular vesicle fabricated by α-cyclodextrin based host-guest recognition and double dynamic covalent bonds

The supramolecular construction of multi-stimuli assemblies is a challenging task for prospective use. In this work, a novel supramolecular amphiphile was fabricated by introducing molecules with dynamic covalent bonds into host-guest inclusion. The amphiphile formed a vesicle, which was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), 1H NMR and UV-vis spectra. Furthermore, the vesicular structure could be regulated by pH, light and redox reagent, and thus the loaded dye in the vesicles could be released in a controlled manner.

Cyclodextrin-based biological stimuli-responsive carriers for smart and precision medicine

Spurred on by recent progress in nanotechnology and precision medicine, smart drug carriers are entering an entirely new era. Smart drug carriers have been widely studied in recent years as a result of their ability to control drug release under different microenvironments (such as pH, redox, and enzyme) in vivo. Host-guest interactions based on cyclodextrins have proven to be an efficient tool for fabricating smart drug carriers. Because of the application of host-guest interactions, many kinds of biological molecules or supramolecular building blocks can combine into an organic whole at the molecular level. In this review, the features, mechanisms of action, and potent applications of biological stimuli-responsive drug carriers based on cyclodextrins are discussed. In addition, some personal perspectives on this field are presented.
