Degenerately doped metal oxide nanocrystals for infrared light harvesting: insight into their plasmonic properties and future perspectives

The tuneability of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of degenerately doped metal oxide (MOX) nanocrystals (NCs) over a wide range of the infrared (IR) region by controlling NC size and doping content offers a unique opportunity to develop a future generation of optoelectronic and photonic devices like IR photodetectors and sensors. The central aim of this review article is to highlight the distinctive and remarkable plasmonic properties of degenerately or heavily doped MOX nanocrystals by reviewing the comprehensive literature reported so far. In particular, the literature of each MOX NC, i.e. ZnO, CdO, In2O3, and WO3 doped with different dopants, is discussed separately. In addition to discussion of the most commonly used colloidal synthesis approaches, the ultrafast dynamics of charge carriers in NCs and the extraction of LSPR-assisted hot-carriers are also discussed in detail. Finally, future prospective applications of MOX NCs in IR photodetectors and photovoltaic (PV) self-powered chemical sensors are also presented.

Intrinsic Visible Plasmonic Properties of Colloidal PtIn2 Intermetallic Nanoparticles

Materials that intrinsically exhibit localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the visible region have been predominantly researched on nanoparticles (NPs) composed of coinage metals, namely Au, Ag, and Cu. Here, as a coinage metal-free intermetallic NPs, colloidal PtIn2 NPs with a C1 (CaF2 -type) crystal structure are synthesized by the liquid phase method, which evidently exhibit LSPR at wavelengths similar to face-centered cubic (fcc)-Au NPs. Computational simulations pointed out differences in the electronic structure and photo-excited electron dynamics between C1-PtIn2 and fcc-Au NPs; reduces interband transition and stronger screening with smaller number of bound d-electrons compare with fcc-Au are unique origins of the visible plasmonic nature of C1-PtIn2 NPs. These results strongly indicate that the intermetallic NPs are expected to address the development of alternative plasmonic materials by tuning their crystal structure and composition.

Tungsten-based Nanomaterials in the Biomedical Field: A Bibliometric Analysis of Research Progress and Prospects

Tungsten-based nanomaterials (TNMs) with diverse nanostructures and unique physicochemical properties have been widely applied in the biomedical field. Although various reviews have described the application of TNMs in specific biomedical fields, there are still no comprehensive studies that summarize and analyze research trends of the field as a whole. To identify and further promote the development of biomedical TNMs, a bibliometric analysis method is used to analyze all relevant literature on this topic. First, general bibliometric distributions of the dataset by year, country, institute, referenced source, and research hotspots are recognized. Next, a comprehensive review of the subjectively recognized research hotspots in various biomedical fields, including biological sensing, anticancer treatments, antibacterials, and toxicity evaluation, is provided. Finally, the prospects and challenges of TNMs are discussed to provide a new perspective for further promoting their development in biomedical research.

Plasmonic metal oxides and their biological applications

Metal oxides modified with dopants and defects are an emerging class of novel materials supporting the localized surface plasmon resonance across a wide range of optical wavelengths, which have attracted tremendous research interest particularly in biological applications in the past decade. Compared to conventional noble metal-based plasmonic materials, plasmonic metal oxides are particularly favored for their cost efficiency, flexible plasmonic properties, and improved biocompatibility, which can be important to accelerate their practical implementation. In this review, we first explicate the origin of plasmonics in dopant/defect-enabled metal oxides and their associated tunable localized surface plasmon resonance through the conventional Mie-Gans model. The research progress of dopant incorporation and defect generation in metal oxide hosts, including both in situ and ex situ approaches, is critically discussed. The implementation of plasmonic metal oxides in biological applications in terms of therapy, imaging, and sensing is summarized, in which the uniqueness of dopant/defect-driven plasmonics for inducing novel functionalities is particularly emphasized. This review may provide insightful guidance for developing next-generation plasmonic devices for human health monitoring, diagnosis and therapy.

In Situ Photoelectrochemical Chloride Activation Using a WO3 Electrode for Oxidative Treatment with Simultaneous H2 Evolution under Visible Light

Reactive chlorine species (RCS) such as HOCl and chlorine radical species is a strong oxidant and has been widely used for water disinfection. This study investigated a photoelectrochemical (PEC) method of RCS production from ubiquitous chloride ions using a WO₃ film electrode and visible light. The degradation of organic substrates coupled with H₂ evolution using a WO₃ electrode was compared among electrochemical (EC), photocatalytic (PC), and PEC conditions (potential bias: +0.5 V vs Ag/AgCl; λ > 420 nm). The degradation of 4-chlorophenol, bisphenol A, acetaminophen, carbamazepine, humic acid, and fulvic acid and the inactivation of E. coli were remarkably enhanced by in situ RCS generated in PEC conditions, whereas the activities of the PC and EC processes were negligible. The activities of the WO₃ film were limited by rapid charge recombination in the PC condition, and the potential bias of +0.5 V did not induce any significant reactions in the EC condition. The PEC activities of WO₃ were limited in the absence of Cl^- but significantly enhanced in the presence of Cl^-, which confirmed the essential role of RCS in this PEC system. The PEC mineralization of organic compounds was also markedly enhanced in the presence of Cl^- where dark chemical chlorination by NaOCl addition induced a negligible mineralization. The H₂ generation was observed only at the PEC condition and was negligible at PC and EC conditions. On the other hand, the oxidation of chloride on a WO₃ photoanode produced chlorate (ClO₃^-) as a toxic byproduct under UV irradiation, but the visible light-irradiated PEC system generated no chlorate.

Plasmon-coupled charge transfer in WO3-x semiconductor nanoarrays: toward highly uniform silver-comparable SERS platforms

Transition metal oxide semiconductors have been explored in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active substrates, yet their detection sensitivity and enhancement effects are inferior. What's more, the reported fabrication technique ignored the effects of the electromagnetic mechanisms and was far from satisfactory for practical applications. Herein, we report on a convenient nanotechnique to fabricate large-area hexagon plum-blossom-like WO3-x nanoarrays based on aluminum nanobowl array substrates. Localized surface plasmon resonance can be increased via adjusting the time of tungsten magnetron sputtering with H2 annealing treatment. The introduction of a double-switch experiment demonstrates that localized surface plasmon-coupled photoinduced charge transfer can not only increase SERS enhancement comparable to similar silver nanostructures but also implement a low limit of detection below 10-9 M. A triple-switch experiment offers specific rules in the molecular detection of WO3-x semiconductors and important guidance for the fabrication of SERS-active semiconducting platforms.

LSPR effects in a magnetic–luminescent heterostructure for efficient enhanced luminescence performance

In this study, a novel core–shell structured nanocomposite of WO₃ intermediate with LSPR was synthesized. This conclusion can solve the problems faced by magnetic–luminescent imaging materials and promote the application of this type of nanocomposites in tumor therapy.

Oxygen vacancy induces self-doping effect and metalloid LSPR in non-stoichiometric tungsten suboxide synergistically contributing to the enhanced photoelectrocatalytic performance of WO3−x/TiO2−x heterojunction

An oxygen-defective heterojunction was made to support the synergistic effect of band-gap narrowing and LSPR-enhanced photoelectrocatalysis.
