A mathematical analysis of mass transfer phenomena with chemical reaction over the flow of Sisko ferronanofluid across a permeable surface

Mathematically study mass transfer phenomena involving chemical reactions in the flow of Sisko Ferro nanofluids through the porous surface. Three ferronano particles, manganese-zinc ferrite (Mn1/2Zn1/2Fe₂O₄), cobalt ferrite (CoFe₂O₄), and nickel-zinc ferrite (Ni-Zn Fe₂O₄) are considered with water (H₂O) and ethylene glycol (C₂H₆O₂) as base liquids. Appropriate resemblance transitions are used to convert the governing system of a nonlinear PDE to a linear ODE. The Runge-Kutta method, as extended by the shooting technique, is used to accomplish the reduction governing equations. The effects of various associated parameters on fluid concentration and mass transfer rate are investigated: magnetic criterion (M), Siskofluid material factor (A), Solid volume fraction (ϕ) for nanofluids, permeability parameter (Rp), Chemical reaction criterion (γ), Brownian motion factor (Nb), and Thermophoretic parameters (Nt). The current findings indicate that the diffusion proportion of Sisko Ferronanofluid Ni-Zn Fe₂O₄-H₂O and CoFe₂O₄-H₂O is higher than that of Ni-Zn Fe₂O₄-C₂H₆O₂ and CoFe₂O₄-C₂H₆O₂ respectively but it is opposite in the case of Mn-Zn ferrite. The comparison study was carried out to validate the precision of the findings.

Investigation of the Rheological Properties of Zn-Ferrite/Perfluoropolyether Oil-Based Ferrofluids

The rheological properties of ferrofluids are related to various applications, such as sealing and loudspeakers, and have therefore attracted widespread attention. However, the rheological properties and their influence on the mechanisms of perfluoropolyether oil (PFPE oil)-based ferrofluids are complicated and not clear. Here, a series of PFPE oil-based ferrofluids were synthesized via a chemical co-precipitation method, and their rheological properties were revealed, systematically. The results indicate that the prepared Zn-ferrite particles have an average size of 12.1 nm, within a range of 4–18 nm, and that the ferrofluids have excellent dispersion stability. The activity of the ferrofluids changes from Newtonian to non-Newtonian, then to solid-like with increasing w from 10 wt% to 45.5 wt%, owing to their variation in microstructures. The viscosity of the ferrofluids increases with increasing M_w (the molecular weight of base liquid PFPE oil polymer), attributed to the increase in entanglements between PFPE oil molecules. The magnetization temperature variation of Zn-ferrite nanoparticles and viscosity temperature variation of PFPE oil together contribute to the viscosity temperature change in ferrofluids. The viscosity of the ferrofluids basically remains unchanged when shear rate is above 50 s⁻¹, with increasing magnetic field strength; however, it first increases and then levels off when the rate is under 10 s⁻¹, revealing that the shear rate and magnetic field strength together affect viscosity. The viscosity and its alteration in Zn-ferrite/PFPE oil-based ferrofluids could be deduced through our work, which will be greatly significant in basic theoretical research and in various applications.

Microfluidics for Multiphase Mixing and Liposomal Encapsulation of Nanobioconjugates: Passive vs. Acoustic Systems

One of the main routes to ensure that biomolecules or bioactive agents remain active as they are incorporated into products with applications in different industries is by their encapsulation. Liposomes are attractive platforms for encapsulation due to their ease of synthesis and manipulation and the potential to fuse with cell membranes when they are intended for drug delivery applications. We propose encapsulating our recently developed cell-penetrating nanobioconjugates based on magnetite interfaced with translocating proteins and peptides with the purpose of potentiating their cell internalization capabilities even further. To prepare the encapsulates (also known as magnetoliposomes (MLPs)), we introduced a low-cost microfluidic device equipped with a serpentine microchannel to favor the interaction between the liposomes and the nanobioconjugates. The encapsulation performance of the device, operated either passively or in the presence of ultrasound, was evaluated both in silico and experimentally. The in silico analysis was implemented through multiphysics simulations with the software COMSOL Multiphysics 5.5® (COMSOL Inc., Stockholm, Sweden) via both a Eulerian model and a transport of diluted species model. The encapsulation efficiency was determined experimentally, aided by spectrofluorimetry. Encapsulation efficiencies obtained experimentally and in silico approached 80% for the highest flow rate ratios (FRRs). Compared with the passive mixer, the in silico results of the device under acoustic waves led to higher discrepancies with respect to those obtained experimentally. This was attributed to the complexity of the process in such a situation. The obtained MLPs demonstrated successful encapsulation of the nanobioconjugates by both methods with a 36% reduction in size for the ones obtained in the presence of ultrasound. These findings suggest that the proposed serpentine micromixers are well suited to produce MLPs very efficiently and with homogeneous key physichochemical properties.

A review on acoustic field-driven micromixers

A review on acoustic field-driven micromixers is given. This is supplemented by the governing equations, governing non-dimensional parameters, numerical simulation approaches, and fabrication techniques. Acoustically induced vibration is a kind of external energy input employed in active micromixers to improve the mixing performance. An air bubble energized by an acoustic field acts as an external energy source and induces friction forces at the interface between an air bubble and liquid, leading to the formation of circulatory flows. The current review (with 200 references) evaluates different characteristics of microfluidic devices working based on acoustic field shaking.

Magnetic nanoparticles in microfluidics-based diagnostics: an appraisal

The use of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in microfluidics based diagnostics is a classic case of micro-, nano- and bio-technology coming together to design extremely controllable, reproducible, and scalable nano and micro 'on-chip bio sensing systems.' In this review, applications of MNPs in microfluidics ranging from molecular diagnostics and immunodiagnostics to clinical uses have been examined. In addition, microfluidic mixing and capture of analytes using MNPs, and MNPs as carriers in microfluidic devices has been investigated. Finally, the challenges and future directions of this upcoming field have been summarized. The use of MNP-based microfluidic devices, will help in developing decentralized or 'point of care' testing globally, contributing to affordable healthcare, particularly, for middle- and low-income developing countries.

Numerical study on the effect of planar normal and Halbach magnet arrays on micromixing

The effective mixing process is critical in biological and chemical processes. The main objective of the present study is to investigate the influence of normal and Halbach magnet arrays on the mixing performance of a three-inlet micromixer numerically. In this microdevice, ferrofluid is injected into the center inlet, and water is injected into two other inlets. The influence of Remanent Flux Density Norm (RFDN), number of magnets, magnet distance from the main microchannel entrance, and inlet flow rate is considered. It is revealed that the micromixer with magnets exhibits a 165% improvement in the mixing efficiency compared to the one with no magnetic field. The results show that increasing the magnetic field does not always increase the mixing quality. Even in some cases, it has a negative effect. It is demonstrated that the mixing efficiency is strongly influenced by the magnet arrangement. An optimal position is found for the magnet arrangement to achieve the maximum mixing efficiency of 91%. Contrary to the normal configuration, Halbach magnet array creates a parabolic profile for flux density. Halbach array can improve the mixing performance, depending on all magnets’ RFDN. The proposed microchannel can be used as a useful device for biological applications.

A Review on Micromixers

Microfluidic devices have attracted increasing attention in the fields of biomedical diagnostics, food safety control, environmental protection, and animal epidemic prevention. Micromixing has a considerable impact on the efficiency and sensitivity of microfluidic devices. This work reviews recent advances on the passive and active micromixers for the development of various microfluidic chips. Recently reported active micromixers driven by pressure fields, electrical fields, sound fields, magnetic fields, and thermal fields, etc. and passive micromixers, which owned two-dimensional obstacles, unbalanced collisions, spiral and convergence-divergence structures or three-dimensional lamination and spiral structures, were summarized and discussed. The future trends for micromixers to combine with 3D printing and paper channel were brought forth as well.

Biocompatible and label-free separation of cancer cells from cell culture lines from white blood cells in ferrofluids

This paper reports a biocompatible and label-free cell separation method using ferrofluids that can separate a variety of low-concentration cancer cells from cell culture lines (∼100 cancer cells per mL) from undiluted white blood cells, with a throughput of 1.2 mL h-1 and an average separation efficiency of 82.2%. The separation is based on the size difference of the cancer cells and white blood cells, and is conducted in a custom-made biocompatible ferrofluid that retains not only excellent short-term viabilities but also normal proliferations of 7 commonly used cancer cell lines. A microfluidic device is designed and optimized specifically to shorten the time of live cells' exposure to ferrofluids from hours to seconds, by eliminating time-consuming off-chip sample preparation and extraction steps and integrating them on-chip to achieve a one-step process. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, a ferrofluid with 0.26% volume fraction was used in this microfluidic device to separate spiked cancer cells from cell lines at a concentration of ∼100 cells per mL from white blood cells with a throughput of 1.2 mL h-1. The separation efficiencies were 80 ± 3%, 81 ± 5%, 82 ± 5%, 82 ± 4%, and 86 ± 6% for A549 lung cancer, H1299 lung cancer, MCF-7 breast cancer, MDA-MB-231 breast cancer, and PC-3 prostate cancer cell lines, respectively. The separated cancer cells' purity was between 25.3% and 28.8%. In addition, the separated cancer cells from this strategy showed an average short-term viability of 94.4 ± 1.3%, and these separated cells were cultured and demonstrated normal proliferation to confluence even after the separation process. Owing to its excellent biocompatibility and label-free operation and its ability to recover low concentrations of cancer cells from white blood cells, this method could lead to a promising tool for rare cell separation.

Recent Advances and Future Perspectives on Microfluidic Liquid Handling

The interdisciplinary research field of microfluidics has the potential to revolutionize current technologies that require the handling of a small amount of fluid, a fast response, low costs and automation. Microfluidic platforms that handle small amounts of liquid have been categorised as continuous-flow microfluidics and digital microfluidics. The first part of this paper discusses the recent advances of the two main and opposing applications of liquid handling in continuous-flow microfluidics: mixing and separation. Mixing and separation are essential steps in most lab-on-a-chip platforms, as sample preparation and detection are required for a variety of biological and chemical assays. The second part discusses the various digital microfluidic strategies, based on droplets and liquid marbles, for the manipulation of discrete microdroplets. More advanced digital microfluidic devices combining electrowetting with other techniques are also introduced. The applications of the emerging field of liquid-marble-based digital microfluidics are also highlighted. Finally, future perspectives on microfluidic liquid handling are discussed.

Electrokinetic instability in microchannel ferrofluid/water co-flows

Electrokinetic instability refers to unstable electric field-driven disturbance to fluid flows, which can be harnessed to promote mixing for various electrokinetic microfluidic applications. This work presents a combined numerical and experimental study of electrokinetic ferrofluid/water co-flows in microchannels of various depths. Instability waves are observed at the ferrofluid and water interface when the applied DC electric field is beyond a threshold value. They are generated by the electric body force that acts on the free charge induced by the mismatch of ferrofluid and water electric conductivities. A nonlinear depth-averaged numerical model is developed to understand and simulate the interfacial electrokinetic behaviors. It considers the top and bottom channel walls’ stabilizing effects on electrokinetic flow through the depth averaging of three-dimensional transport equations in a second-order asymptotic analysis. This model is found accurate to predict both the observed electrokinetic instability patterns and the measured threshold electric fields for ferrofluids of different concentrations in shallow microchannels.

A Rapid Magnetofluidic Micromixer Using Diluted Ferrofluid

Effective and rapid mixing is essential for various chemical and biological assays. The present work describes a simple and low-cost micromixer based on magnetofluidic actuation. The device takes advantage of magnetoconvective secondary flow, a bulk flow induced by an external magnetic field, for mixing. A superparamagnetic stream of diluted ferrofluid and a non-magnetic stream are introduced to a straight microchannel. A permanent magnet placed next to the microchannel induced a non-uniform magnetic field. The magnetic field gradient and the mismatch in magnetic susceptibility between the two streams create a body force, which leads to rapid and efficient mixing. The micromixer reported here could achieve a high throughput and a high mixing efficiency of 88% in a relatively short microchannel.
