Sustainable catalysts for efficient triazole synthesis: an immobilized triazine-based copper-NNN pincer complex on TiO2

The multistep synthesis of a hybrid material based on a TiO2 core with an immobilized triazine-based copper(II)-NNN pincer complex is reported. The formation of the material was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy and elemental and thermogravimetric analyses, and the loading by copper ions was quantified by ICP/OES analysis. The properties of the hybrid material were further investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contiuous wave electron spin resonance (CW-ESR), UV-vis spectroscopy, and argon sorption. Efficient and regioselective synthesis of 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles was achieved by employing the hybrid material as a catalyst in a mixture of H2O/EtOH as a green solvent with excellent catalytic activity with a TOF up to 495 h-1 at 50 °C. The reusability of the prepared hybrid material in the catalytic reaction was possible over five consecutive runs without significant loss of catalytic activity. The described method represents an effective way to ensure sustainable use of pincer complexes in catalytic systems by immobilizing them on solid supports, resulting in a hybrid organic-inorganic catalyst platform.

Interface Engineering of a Ti4O7 Nanofibrous Membrane for Efficient Solar-Driven Evaporation

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation provides a feasible and sustainable way to solve the fresh water shortage using abundant solar energy and has recently attracted considerable attention. However, it has been limited by the evaporation rate and solar-heat conversion efficiency of the current materials. Herein, a novel Ti₄O₇ membrane with synergetic photothermal and electrothermal effects was developed using a straightforward in situ approach. Based on interface engineering, the interface between the surface of the membrane and water was hydrophobically modified, and a thermal insulation layer was added to the bottom of the membrane. The optimized self-floating membrane with excellent sunlight absorbability and conductivity achieved a remarkably high evaporation rate of 7.51 kg m^-2 h^-1 with a voltage of 3 V as compensation under one-sun irradiation (1 kW m^-2). Moreover, the bilayered membrane displayed efficient salt ion rejection, and the collected water can meet the World Health Organization (WHO) standard required for potable water.

Crystal Facet Engineering and Hydrogen Spillover-Assisted Synthesis of Defective Pt/TiO2-x Nanorods with Enhanced Visible Light-Driven Photocatalytic Activity

Hydrogen spillover can assist the introduction of defects such as Ti³⁺ and concomitant oxygen vacancies (V_O) in a TiO₂ crystal, thereby inducing a new level below the conduction band to improve the conductivity of photogenerated electrons and the visible light absorption property of TiO₂. Meanwhile, crystal facet engineering offers a promising approach to achieve improved activity by influencing the recombination step of the photogenerated electrons and holes. In this study, with the aim of achieving enhanced visible light-driven photocatalytic activity, rutile TiO₂ nanorods with different aspect ratios were synthesized by crystal facet engineering, and Pt-deposited TiO_2-x nanorods (Pt/TNR) were then obtained via reduction treatment assisted by hydrogen spillover. The reduction treatment at 200 °C induced the formation of surface Ti³⁺ exclusively, whereas surface Ti³⁺ and V_O were formed by performing the reduction at 600 °C. The Pt/TNR with a higher aspect ratio reduced at 200 °C exhibited the highest activity in photocatalytic H₂ production under visible light irradiation owing to the synergistic effect of the introduction of Ti³⁺ defects and the spatial charge carrier separation induced by crystal facet engineering.

Impacts of the Catalyst Structures on CO2 Activation on Catalyst Surfaces

Utilizing CO2 as a sustainable carbon source to form valuable products requires activating it by active sites on catalyst surfaces. These active sites are usually in or below the nanometer scale. Some metals and metal oxides can catalyze the CO2 transformation reactions. On metal oxide-based catalysts, CO2 transformations are promoted significantly in the presence of surface oxygen vacancies or surface defect sites. Electrons transferable to the neutral CO2 molecule can be enriched on oxygen vacancies, which can also act as CO2 adsorption sites. CO2 activation is also possible without necessarily transferring electrons by tailoring catalytic sites that promote interactions at an appropriate energy level alignment of the catalyst and CO2 molecule. This review discusses CO2 activation on various catalysts, particularly the impacts of various structural factors, such as oxygen vacancies, on CO2 activation.

Defective Dopant-Free TiO2 as an Efficient Visible Light-Active Photocatalyst

Pristine and modified/doped titania are still some of the most widely investigated photocatalysts due to its high activity, stability, abundance and proper redox properties to carry out various reactions. However, modifiers and/or dopants resulting in visible-light activity might be expensive or work as recombination centers under UV irradiation. It seems that defective titania, known as “self-doped” TiO2, might be the best solution since it can be obtained under mild conditions without the addition of expensive materials and methods. This review discusses various methods of defective titania preparation, characterization of defect types, their localization (surface vs. bulk) and their function, as well as proposed mechanisms of photocatalytic reactions in the presence of self-doped titania. Although many kinds of defective titania samples have already been prepared with different colors, color intensities and defect kinds (mainly Ti3+ and oxygen vacancies), it is difficult to conclude which of them are the most recommended as the preparation conditions and activity testing used by authors differ. Furthermore, activity testing under solar radiation and for dyes does not clarify the mechanism since bare titania can also be excited and sensitized, respectively, in these conditions. In many reports, authors have not considered the possible influence of some impurities originated from the synthesis method (e.g., H, Al, Zn, Cl, F) that could co-participate in the overall mechanism of photocatalytic reactions. Moreover, some reports indicate that defective titania, especially black ones, might decrease activity since the defects might work as recombination centers. Despite some unproven/unclear findings and unanswered questions, there are many well-conducted studies confirmed by both experimental and theoretical studies that defective titania might be a promising material for various photocatalytic reactions under both UV and visible-light irradiation. Based on available literature, it could be proposed that optimal defects’ concentration, the preferential role of surface defects, a higher surface-to-bulk ratio of defects in rutile than in anatase, and the beneficial impact of disordered surface are the most important aspects to be considered during the preparation of defective titania.

Monitoring the Structure Evolution of Titanium Oxide Photocatalysts: From the Molecular Form via the Amorphous State to the Crystalline Phase

Amorphous Tix Oy with high surface area has attracted significant interest as photocatalyst with higher activity in ultraviolet (UV) light-induced water splitting applications compared to commercial nanocrystalline TiO2 . Under photocatalytic operation conditions, the structure of the molecular titanium alkoxide precursor rearranges upon hydrolysis and leads to higher connectivity of the structure-building units. Structurally ordered domains with sizes smaller than 7 Å form larger aggregates. The experimental scattering data can be explained best with a structure model consisting of an anatase-like core and a distorted shell. Upon exposure to UV light, the white Tix Oy suspension turns dark corresponding to the reduction of Ti4+ to Ti3+ as confirmed by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Heat-induced crystallisation was followed by in situ temperature-dependent total scattering experiments. First, ordering in the Ti-O environment takes place upon to 350 °C. Above this temperature, the distorted anatase core starts to grow but the structure obtained at 400 °C is still not fully ordered.

Fabrication of Electrochemical Biosensor Based on Titanium Dioxide Nanotubes and Silver Nanoparticles for Heat Shock Protein 70 Detection

This paper presents the fabrication methodology of an electrochemical biosensor for the detection of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) as a potential tumor marker with high diagnostic sensitivity. The sensor substrate was a composite based on titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNTs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) produced directly on TNTs by electrodeposition, to which anti-HSP70 antibodies were attached by covalent functionalization. This manuscript contains a detailed description of the production, modification, and the complete characteristics of the material used as a biosensor platform. As-formed TNTs, annealed TNTs, and the final sensor platform—AgNPs/TNTs, were tested using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). In addition, open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and cyclic voltammetry (CV) of these substrates were used to assess the influence of TNTs modification on their electrochemical characteristics. The EIS technique was used to monitor the functionalization steps of the AgNPs/TNTs electrode and the interaction between anti-HSP70 and HSP70. The produced composite was characterized by high purity, and electrical conductivity improved more than twice compared to unmodified TNTs. The linear detection range of HSP70 of the developed biosensor was in the concentration range from 0.1 to 100 ng/mL.

UV/Vis Light Induced Degradation of Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride Mediated byCo-TiO2 Nanoparticles

Pharmaceuticals, especially antibiotics, constitute an important group of aquatic contaminants given their environmental impact. Specifically, tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) are produced in great amounts for the treatment of bacterial infections in both human and veterinary medicine. Several studies have shown that, among all antibiotics, oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC HCl) is one of the most frequently detected TCs in soil and surface water. The results of the photocatalytic degradation of OTC HCL in aqueous suspensions (30 mg·L⁻¹) of 0.5 wt.% cobalt-doped TiO₂ catalysts are reported in this study. The heterogeneous Co-TiO₂ photocatalysts were synthesized by two different solvothermal methods. Evonik Degussa Aevoxide P25 and self-prepared TiO₂ modified by the same methods were used for comparison. The synthesized photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV/vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and N₂ adsorption (BET) for specific surface area determination. The XRD and Raman results suggest that Ti⁴⁺ was substituted by Co²⁺ in the TiO₂ crystal structure. Uv/visible spectroscopy of Co-TiO₂-R showed a substantial redshift in comparison with bare TiO₂-R. The photocatalytic performance of the prepared photocatalysts in OTC HCL degradation was investigated employing Uv/vis spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The observed initial reaction rate over Co-TiO₂-R was higher compared with that of Co-TiO₂-HT, self-prepared TiO₂, and the commercial P25. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was attributed to the high surface area (153 m²·g⁻¹) along with the impurity levels within the band gap (2.93 eV), promoting the charge separation and improving the charge transfer ability. From these experimental results, it can be concluded that Co-doping under reflux demonstrates better photocatalytic performances than with the hydrothermal treatment.

The formation and detection techniques of oxygen vacancies in titanium oxide-based nanostructures

TiO2 and other titanium oxide-based nanomaterials have drawn immense attention from researchers in different scientific domains due to their fascinating multifunctional properties, relative abundance, environmental friendliness, and bio-compatibility. However, the physical and chemical properties of titanium oxide-based nanomaterials are found to be explicitly dependent on the presence of various crystal defects. Oxygen vacancies are the most common among them and have always been the subject of both theoretical and experimental research as they play a crucial role in tuning the inherent properties of titanium oxides. This review highlights different strategies for effectively introducing oxygen vacancies in titanium oxide-based nanomaterials, as well as a discussion on the positions of oxygen vacancies inside the TiO2 band gap based on theoretical calculations. Additionally, a detailed review of different experimental techniques that are extensively used for identifying oxygen vacancies in TiO2 nanostructures is also presented.
