Novel lignin-supported copper complex as a highly efficient and recyclable nanocatalyst for Ullmann reaction

In this work, we prepared polyhydroxylated lignin by demethylation and hydroxylation of lignin, and grafted phosphorus-containing groups by nucleophilic substitution reaction, the resulting material could be used as a carrier for the preparation of heterogeneous Cu-based catalysts (PHL-CuI-OPR₂). The optimal PHL-CuI-OP^tBu₂ catalyst was characterized by FT-IR, TGA, BET, XRD, SEM-EDS, ICP-OES, XPS. The catalytic performance of PHL-CuI-OP^tBu₂ in the Ullmann CN coupling reaction was evaluated using iodobenzene and nitroindole as model substrates under nitrogen atmosphere with DME and H₂O as cosolvent at 95 °C for 24 h. The applicability of modified lignin-supported copper catalyst was investigated of various aryl/heteroaryl halides with indoles under optimal conditions, the corresponding products were obtained with high yield. Additionally, it could be easily recovered from the reaction medium by an easy centrifugation and washing.

Copper-catalyzed N-arylation of indoles

Abstract:

Over the past decades, the N-arylation of indoles has gained an inevitable role in the fields of material science, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemical industries. They are the basic core skeleton of many natural products. Their synthesis by Ullmann-type C–N coupling reaction of indole derivatives with aryl halides through various catalytic protocols is well explored. Transition metal catalysis was the best method for synthesizing 1-aryl indoles, and copper catalysis is the leading among them. This review comprehends the recent developments in the copper-catalyzed C–N cross-coupling of indoles with aryl halides from 2010 to 2022.

Steric effects on acetate-assisted cyclometallation of meta-substituted N-phenyl and N-benzyl imidazolium salts at [MCl2Cp*]2 (M = Ir, Rh)

meta-Substituted N-phenyl,N'-methyl and N-benzyl,N'-methyl imidazolium salts undergo acetate-assisted cyclometallation to provide mixtures of ortho and para substituted cyclometallated complexes. The effect of the substituents on the isomer ratios is discussed; steric effects are more important in the 6-membered rings derived from the N-benzyl imidazolium salts than 5-membered rings from the N-phenyl salts. Comparisons are made to steric effects with some other common directing groups.
