Abstract
5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is an important bio-derived platform molecule that is generally obtained from hexoses via acid-catalyzed dehydration. It can be effectively transformed into a variety of value-added derivatives, thus being an ideal candidate for fossil replacement. Both HMF oxidation and hydrogenation processes enable the synthesis of numerous chemicals, monomers for polymerization, and biofuel precursors. This Review summarizes the most recent advances in heterogeneous catalytic hydroconversion of HMF into valuable chemicals with strong focus on 2,5-bishydroxymethyl furan (BHMF), 2,5-bishydroxymethyltetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF), and 2,5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran (DMTHF). In addition, multifunctional catalytic systems that enable a tunable production of various HMF derived intermediates are discussed. Within this chemistry, the surprising impact of HMF purity on the catalytic performance, such as selectivity and activity, during its upgrading is highlighted. Lastly, the remaining challenges in the field of HMF hydroconversion to the mentioned chemicals are summarized and discussed, taking into account the knowledge gain of catalyst properties and feedstock purity.

Abstract
The depletion of fossil resources is driving the research towards alternative renewable ones. Under this perspective, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) represents a key molecule deriving from biomass characterized by remarkable potential as platform chemical. In this work, for the first time, the hydrogenation of HMF in ethanol was selectively addressed towards 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) or 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF) by properly tuning the reaction conditions in the presence of the same commercial catalyst (Ru/C), reaching the highest yields of 80 and 93 mol%, respectively. These diols represent not only interesting monomers but strategic precursors for two scarcely investigated ethoxylated biofuels, 2,5-bis(ethoxymethyl)furan (BEMF) and 2,5-bis(ethoxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BEMTHF). Therefore, the etherification with ethanol of pure BHMF and BHMTHF and of crude BHMF, as obtained from hydrogenation step, substrates scarcely investigated in the literature, was performed with several commercial heterogeneous acid catalysts. Among them, the zeolite HZSM-5 (Si/Al=25) was the most promising system, achieving the highest BEMF yield of 74 mol%. In particular, for the first time, the synthesis of the fully hydrogenated diether BEMTHF was thoroughly studied, and a novel cascade process for the tailored conversion of HMF to the diethyl ethers BEMF and BEMTHF was proposed.

Abstract
Selective hydrogenation plays an important role in the chemical industry and has a wide range of applications, including the production of fine chemicals and petrochemicals, pharmaceutical synthesis, healthcare product development, and the synthesis of agrochemicals. Pd-based catalysts have been widely applied for selective hydrogenation due to their unique electronic structure and ability to adsorb and activate hydrogen and unsaturated substrates. However, the exclusive and comprehensive summarization of the size, composition, and surface and interface effect of metal Pd on the performance for selective hydrogenation is still lacking. In this perspective, the research progress on selective hydrogenation using Pd-based catalysts is summarized. The strategies for improving the catalytic hydrogenation performance over Pd-based catalysts are investigated. Specifically, the effects of the size, composition, and surface and interfacial structure of Pd-based catalysts, which could influence the dissociation mode of hydrogen, the adsorption, and the reaction mode of the catalytic substrate, on the performance have been systemically reviewed. Then, the progress on Pd-based catalysts for selective hydrogenation of unsaturated alkynes, aldehydes, ketones, and nitroaromatic hydrocarbons is revealed based on the fundamental principles of selective hydrogenation. Finally, perspectives on the further development of strategies for chemical selective hydrogenation are provided. It is hoped that this perspective would provide an instructive guideline for constructing efficient heterogeneous Pd-based catalysts for various selective hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract
Bisphenol A is an oil-derived, large market volume chemical with a wide spectrum of applications in plastics, adhesives and thermal papers. However, bisphenol A is not considered safe due to its endocrine disrupting properties and reproductive toxicity. Several functional substitutes of bisphenol A have been proposed in the literature, produced from plant biomass. Unless otherwise specified, the present review covers the most significant contributions that appeared in the time span January 2015-August 2019, describing the sustainable catalytic synthesis of rigid diols from biomass derivatives. The focus is thereupon on heterogeneous catalysis, use of green solvents and mild conditions, cascade processes in one-pot, and continuous flow setups. More than 500 up-to-date references describe the various substitutes proposed and the catalytic methods for their manufacture, broken down according to the main biomass types from which they originate.

Abstract
Biobased plasticizers, as substitutes for phthalates, have been synthesized from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and carboxylic acids (or esters) through a chemoenzymatic cascade process that involves as its first step the reduction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural into 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF), followed by the esterification of BHMF with carboxylic acids (or esters) by using a supported lipase (Novozym 435). The reduction of HMF into BHMF is performed by using monodisperse metallic Co nanoparticles with a thin carbon shell (Co@C) with high activity and selectivity. After optimization of reaction conditions (temperature, hydrogen pressure, and solvent), it is possible to achieve 97 % conversion of HMF with 99 % selectivity to BHMF after 2 h reaction time. The reduction of HMF and esterification of BHMF using carboxylic acids or vinyl esters as acyl donors by lipase are optimized separately in batch and in fixed-bed continuous reactors. The coupling of two flow reactors (for reduction and subsequent esterification) working under optimized reaction conditions affords the diesters of BHMF in roughly 90 % yield with no loss of activity during 60 h of operation.

Abstract
Lignocellulosic biomass can be converted to significant platform molecule 5-
hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), from which one can envision a number of biofuels and
chemicals through either chemical or biological conversions. Chemoselective hydrogenation
is one of the important pathways for the upgrading of HMF into furanyl diols consisting
of 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) and 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran
(BHMTHF). BHMF and BHMTHF are all-purpose intermediates for the manufacture of
chemicals, fuels, and functional materials. In this context, we comprehensively summarized
the studies on the chemoselective hydrogenation of HMF into furanyl diols in terms
of different H-donors, including molecular H2, alcohols, formic acid, and other alternative
H-donors. Through the systematic survey of the previous works, a feasible research direction
is discussed for the production of furanyl diols.

Abstract
Heterogeneous catalytic conversion of lignocellulosic components into valuable chemicals and biofuels is one of the promising ways for biomass valorization, which well meets green chemistry metrics, and can alleviate environmental and economic issues caused by the rapid depletion of fossil fuels. Among the identified biomass derivatives, furfural (FF) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) stand out as rich building blocks and can be directly produced from pentose and hexose sugars, respectively. In the past decades, much attention has been attracted to the selective hydrogenation of FF and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural using various heterogeneous catalysts. This review evaluates the recent progress of developing different heterogeneous catalytic materials, such as noble/non-noble metal particles, solid acids/bases, and alkali metal salts, for the efficient reduction of bio-based furanic aldehydes to alcohols. Emphasis is laid on the insights and challenges encountered in those biomass transformation processes, along with the focus on the understanding of reaction mechanisms to clarify the catalytic role of specific active species. Brief outlook is also made for further optimization of the catalytic systems and processes for the upgrading of biofuranic compounds.

Synergistic Effect of Oxygen Vacancies and Ni Species on Tuning Selectivity of Ni/ZrO₂ Catalyst for Hydrogenation of Maleic Anhydride into Succinic Anhydride and γ-Butyrolacetone. Abstract
ZrO₂ nanoparticles, ZrO₂ (P) and ZrO₂ (H), with different tetragonal phase contents, were prepared. ZrO₂ (P) possessed higher tetragonal phase content than ZrO₂ (H). Ni/ZrO₂ catalysts (10% (w/w)), using ZrO₂ (P) and ZrO₂ (H) as supports, were prepared using an impregnation method, and were characterized using XRD, Raman, H₂-TPR, XPS, and H₂-TPD techniques. Their catalytic performance in maleic anhydride hydrogenation was tested. The Ni/ZrO₂ (P) catalyst exhibited stronger metal-support interactions than the Ni/ZrO₂ (H) catalyst because of its higher number of oxygen vacancies and the low-coordinated oxygen ions on its surface. Consequently, smaller Ni crystallites and a higher C=C hydrogenation activity for maleic anhydride to succinic anhydride were obtained over a Ni/ZrO₂ (P) catalyst. However, the C=O hydrogenation activity of Ni/ZrO₂ (P) catalyst was much lower than that of the Ni/ZrO₂ (H) catalyst. A 43.5% yield of γ-butyrolacetone was obtained over the Ni/ZrO₂ (H) catalyst at 210 °C and 5 MPa of H₂ pressure, while the yield of γ-butyrolactone was only 2.8% over the Ni/ZrO₂ (P) catalyst under the same reaction conditions. In situ FT-IR characterization demonstrated that the high C=O hydrogenation activity for the Ni/ZrO₂ (H) catalyst could be attributed to the surface synergy between active metallic nickel species and relatively electron-deficient oxygen vacancies.
