Cationic Imidazolium-Urethane-Based Poly(Ionic Liquids) Membranes for Enhanced CO2/CH4 Separation: Synthesis, Characterization, and Performance Evaluation

The escalating emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere require the urgent development of technologies aimed at mitigating environmental impacts. Among these, aqueous amine solutions and polymeric membranes, such as cellulose acetate and polyimide are commercial technologies requiring improvement or substitution to enhance the economic and energetic efficiency of CO2 separation processes. Ionic liquids and poly(ionic liquids) (PILs) are candidates to replace conventional CO2 separation technologies. PILs are a class of materials capable of combining the favorable gas affinity exhibited by ionic liquids (ILs) with the processability inherent in polymeric materials. In this context, the synthesis of the IL GLYMIM[Cl] was performed, followed by ion exchange processes to achieve GLYMIM variants with diverse counter anions (NTf2-, PF6-, and BF4). Subsequently, PIL membranes were fabricated from these tailored ILs and subjected to characterization, employing techniques such as SEC, FTIR, DSC, TGA, DMA, FEG-SEM, and CO2 sorption analysis using the pressure decay method. Furthermore, permeability and ideal selectivity assessments of CO2/CH4 mixture were performed to derive the diffusion and solubility coefficients for both CO2 and CH4. PIL membranes exhibited adequate thermal and mechanical properties. The PIL-BF4 demonstrated CO2 sorption capacities of 33.5 mg CO2/g at 1 bar and 104.8 mg CO2/g at 10 bar. Furthermore, the PIL-BF4 membrane exhibited permeability and ideal (CO2/CH4) selectivity values of 41 barrer and 44, respectively, surpassing those of a commercial cellulose acetate membrane as reported in the existing literature. This study underscores the potential of PIL-based membranes as promising candidates for enhanced CO2 capture technologies.

Functional Zwitterionic Polyurethanes: State-of-the-Art Review

Recent advancements in bioengineering and medical devices have been greatly influenced and dominated by synthetic polymers, particularly polyurethanes (PUs). PUs offer customizable mechanical properties and long-term stability, but their inherent hydrophobic nature poses challenges in practically biological application processes, such as interface high friction, strong protein adsorption, and thrombosis. To address these issues, surface modifications of PUs for generating functionally hydrophilic layers have received widespread attention, but the durability of generated surface functionality is poor due to irreversible mechanical wear or biodegradation. As a result, numerous researchers have investigated bulk modification techniques to incorporate zwitterionic polymers or groups onto the main or side chains of PUs, thereby improving their hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. This comprehensive review presents an extensive overview of notable zwitterionic PUs (ZPUs), including those based on phosphorylcholine, sulfobetaine, and carboxybetaine. The review explores their wide range of biomedical applications, from blood-contacting devices to antibacterial coatings, fouling-resistant marine coatings, separation membranes, lubricated surfaces, and shape memory and self-healing materials. Lastly, the review summarizes the challenges and future prospects of ZPUs in biological applications.

Polyurethanes Modified by Ionic Liquids and Their Applications

Polyurethane (PU) refers to the polymer containing carbamate groups in its molecular structure, generally obtained by the reaction of isocyanate and alcohol. Because of its flexible formulation, diverse product forms, and excellent performance, it has been widely used in mechanical engineering, electronic equipment, biomedical applications, etc. Through physical or chemical methods, ionic groups are introduced into PU, which gives PU electrical conductivity, flame-retardant, and antistatic properties, thus expanding the application fields of PU, especially in flexible devices such as sensors, actuators, and functional membranes for batteries and gas absorption. In this review, we firstly introduced the characteristics of PU in chemical and microphase structures and their related physical and chemical performance. To improve the performance of PU, ionic liquids (ILs) were applied in the processing or synthesis of PU, resulting in a new type of PU called ionic PU. In the following part of this review, we mainly summarized the fabrication methods of IL-modified PUs via physical blending and the chemical copolymerization method. Then, we summarized the research progress of the applications for IL-modified PUs in different fields, including sensors, actuators, transistors, antistatic films, etc. Finally, we discussed the future development trends and challenges faced by IL-modified PUs.

Tuning Thermal, Morphological, and Physicochemical Properties of Thermoplastic Polyurethanes (TPUs) by the 1,4-Butanediol (BDO)/Dipropylene Glycol (DPG) Ratio

Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) are versatile polymers presenting a broad range of properties as a result of their countless combination of raw materials—in essence, isocyanates, polyols, and chain extenders. This study highlights the effect of two different chain extenders and their combination on the structure−property relationships of TPUs synthesized by reactive extrusion. The TPUs were obtained from 4,4-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), polyester diols, and the chain extenders 1,4-butanediol (BDO) and dipropylene glycol (DPG). The BDO/DPG ratios studied were 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75, and 0/100 wt.%. The TPUs were characterized by size exclusion chromatography (SEC), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), UV−vis spectroscopy, and physical-mechanical properties. The results indicate that DPG promotes compatibility between rigid (HS) and flexible (SS) segments of TPUs. Consequently, increasing DPG content (>75 wt.%) reduced the organization of the rigid segments and the degree of phase separation, increasing the polydispersity of the interdomain distance and the transparency in the UV−visible spectrum of the TPUs. Furthermore, increasing DPG content also reduced the amount of hydrogen bonds present in the rigid phase, reducing or extinguishing its glass transition temperature (TgHS) and melting temperature (Tm), and increasing the glass transition temperature of the flexible phase (TgSS). Therefore, increasing DPG content leads to a deterioration in mechanical properties and hydrolysis resistance.

Preparation of Polydimethylsiloxane-Modified Waterborne Polyurethane Coatings for Marine Applications

A series of waterborne polyurethane dispersions (WPUs) modified with hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were prepared by incorporating PDMS into the soft segments of polyurethane chains. The structural characteristics of the prepared samples were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and particle size analysis (PSA). The effect of PDMS content on the thermal and mechanical properties of PDMS-modified waterborne polyurethanes (PS-WPU) was investigated. In addition, the water resistance and dimensional stability of the PS-WPU were investigated by measuring its water absorption ratio and water contact angle along with universal testing machine measurements.

Ionic Liquids and Calcium Oxide Grafted with Allylmalonic Acid Applied to Support the Peroxide Crosslinking of an Ethylene-Propylene Copolymer

Nanosized calcium oxide (CaO) featuring a surface grafted with allylmalonic acid (ALA) was used to increase the efficiency of the peroxide crosslinking of an ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPM) filled with silica nanoparticles. In this study, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) with different anions were applied to improve the dispersion of CaO/ALA and silica nanoparticles in the EPM copolymer, as well as to catalyze the interfacial crosslinking reactions. In this article, we discuss the effects of CaO/ALA and ILs on the curing characteristics, vulcanization temperature, crosslink density, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of EPM, as well as the resistance of EPM to weather aging. The CaO/ALA with ILs reduced the vulcanization time of the rubber compounds without a significant effect on the vulcanization temperature. Their application resulted in an increased vulcanizate crosslink density, as well as improved tensile strength compared to the pure peroxide system. The influence of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium ILs on EPM vulcanization and performance depends on the anion present in the molecules of the ionic liquid. The most active IL seems to be that with the tetrafluoroborate anion.

A Novel Polymer Electrolyte Matrix Incorporating Ionic Liquid into Waterborne Polyurethane for Lithium-Ion Battery

Ionic liquid has relatively high conductivity at room temperature and good electrochemical stability. Ionic liquid polymer electrolytes have some advantages of both ionic liquid and polymer. In this work, 1-alkyl-3-(2',3'-dihydroxypropyl)imidazolium chloride (IL-Cl) was incorporated into waterborne polyurethane chain to composite all-solid-state polymer electrolyte matrices. The structure, thermal stability, mechanical property and ionic conductivity of the matrices were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), tensile measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results demonstrated that when the content of IL-Cl was 14 wt%, the mechanical property of film was optimized, with a maximum tensile strength of 36 MPa and elongation at break of 1030%. In addition, as for the film with IL-Cl content of 16 wt%, its oxygen index value increased to 25.2% and ionic conductivity reached a maximum of 1.2 × 10-5 S·cm-1 at room temperature, showing high flame retardancy and ionic conductivity.

Shape Memory Polyurethane-Based Smart Polymer Substrates for Physiologically Responsive, Dynamic Pressure (Re)Distribution

Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are an exciting class of stimuli-responsive smart materials that demonstrate reactive and reversible changes in mechanical property, usually by switching between different states due to external stimuli. We report on the development of a polyurethane-based SMP foam for effective pressure redistribution that demonstrates controllable changes in dynamic pressure redistribution capability at a low transition temperature (∼24 °C)-ideally suited to matching modulations in body contact pressure for dynamic pressure relief (e.g., for alleviation or pressure ulcer effects). The resultant SMP material has been extensively characterized by a series of tests including stress-strain testing, compression testing, dynamic mechanical analysis, optical microscopy, UV-visible absorbance spectroscopy, variable-temperature areal pressure distribution, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic thermogravimetric analysis, and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The foam system exhibits high responsivity when tested for plantar pressure modulation with significant potential in pressure ulcers treatment. Efficient pressure redistribution (∼80% reduction in interface pressure), high stress response (∼30% applied stress is stored in fixity and released on recovery), and excellent deformation recovery (∼100%) are demonstrated in addition to significant cycling ability without performance loss. By providing highly effective pressure redistribution and modulation when in contact with the body's surface, this SMP foam offers novel mechanisms for alleviating the risk of pressure ulcers.

In Situ Incorporation of Diamino Silane Group into Waterborne Polyurethane for Enhancing Surface Hydrophobicity of Coating

A series of waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) with crosslinked siloxane were obtained through introducing 3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyldimethoxymethylsilane (APTS) into WPU by in situ polymerization. The properties of WPU modified by APTS were studied through a variety of experimental methods. The water contact angle of the WPU coating surface increased from 64° to 86°, and the water resistance reduced to 3.90% when 3 wt% APTS was added, which improved the coating surface hydrophobicity. Firstly, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and ¹H-NMR spectra demonstrated the successful incorporation of APTS to polyurethanes and completed the hydrolytic condensation reaction-generated Si-O-Si crosslinking structure. Furthermore, the surface energy of the membrane was reduced when the crosslinking structure migrated and enriched on the surface of film. Besides, the crosslinking structure was abundant, and the distribution of siloxane in WPU was more uniform.

Super stretchable chromatic polyurethane driven by anthraquinone chromogen as a chain extender

A novel polyurethane elastomer (PUE) that exhibited high tensile strength, large elongation at break, great color strength and supreme color fastness was successfully designed and synthesized. The PUEs were prepared with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as hard segments, polycarbonate diol (PCDL)/polytetrahydrofuran glycol (PTHF) as mixed soft segments, and anthraquinone chromogen as the chain extender agent. The relationships between the mechanical properties/color performance and chromogen addition content were investigated. The chromogen actual access rate of the obtained BPUEs was evaluated by UV-Vis. The clear tortuous surface and entanglements were exhibited in PUEs micromorphology structure, indicating a significant reinforcement of mechanical properties. Elongation-at-break and tensile strength reached the maximum value 2394% at 1% (BPUE₁) and 18.29 MPa at 5% (BPUE₅), respectively, and then decreased as chromogen addition content increased. Mechanical testing results correlate well with XRD and SEM findings, which proved that anthraquinone chromogen induced an improvement in phase separation. Furthermore, BPUE films displayed high color strength and excellent color fastnesses. The rubbing fastness and washing fastness of BPUE₁ and BPUE_0.5 reached grade 5, respectively. These inspiring findings suggest that PUE films with superb performance have potential to be directly applied in the textile field.

PUEs introducing anthraquinone chromogen as chain extender exhibit superior mechanical and color properties. The improvement of elongation is most significant. BPUE₁ and BPUE_0.5 display high color strength and supreme rubbing and washing fastness.

Polyurethane with an ionic liquid crosslinker: a new class of super shape memory-like polymers

Polyurethane (PU) with an ionic liquid crosslinker (with a unique double network having a combination of covalent as well as ionic crosslinking) showed excellent shape-recovery as well as excellent shape-fixity properties compared to linear PU and non-ionic crosslinked PU. The non-ionic crosslinker resulted in hard and soft phases intermixing, whereas the ionic interaction in ionic liquid crosslinked PU kept the phase separation intact.

Synthesis of Aliphatic Carbonate Macrodiols and Their Application as Sustainable Feedstock for Polyurethane

High-molecular-weight poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) [number-average molecular mass (M _n): 80 000-100 000] is readily alcoholized into PPC macrodiols in the presence of 1,2-propanediol (PDO), 1,4-butanediol (BDO), or 1,6-hexanediol (HDO). The high-molecular-weight PPC and small amount of diols, such as PDO, BDO, or HDO, were stirred at elevated temperatures to convert the extremely viscous high-molecular-weight polymer to low-molecular-weight macrodiols with gel permeation chromatography-measured M _n of about 3000 Da. The chopping reaction of the high-molecular-weight PPC was studied in detail, such as the influences of the catalyst residue, the kinds of alcoholysis agents, reaction temperature, and time. The reaction mechanism of alcoholysis is proposed according to the experimental results. The results indicate that the presence of a trace residue of zinc catalyst (Zn-G-III) in PPC, excess diol feeding, and higher temperature can accelerate the alcoholysis. Moreover, different diols can produce different PPC macrodiols with varying end-capping. Finally, polycarbonate ether urethane can be successfully synthesized using as-synthesized PPC macrodiols and poly(propylene glycol) (M _n ≈ 3000) as the soft segment and 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate or BDO as the hard segment. The full evaluation for the synthesized PPC macrodiols demonstrates their potential applications in the polyurethane industry.

Progress in polydimethylsiloxane-modified waterborne polyurethanes

Using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to modify waterborne polyurethane (WPU) has proved to be an effective and feasible way to improve some key properties of WPU.
