Advances in ultrasensitive piezoresistive sensors: from conventional to flexible and stretchable applications

The piezoresistive effect has been a dominant mechanical sensing principle that has been widely employed in a range of sensing applications. This transducing concept still receives great attention because of the huge demand for developing small, low-cost, and high-performance sensing devices. Many researchers have extensively explored new methods to enhance the piezoresistive effect and to make sensors more and more sensitive. Many interesting phenomena and mechanisms to enhance the sensitivity have been discovered. Numerous review papers on the piezoresistive effect have been published; however, there is no comprehensive review article that thoroughly analyses methods and approaches to enhance the piezoresistive effect. This paper comprehensively reviews and presents all the advanced enhancement methods ranging from the quantum physical effect and new materials to nanoscopic and macroscopic structures, and from conventional rigid to flexible, stretchable and wearable applications. In addition, the paper summarises results recently achieved on applying the above-mentioned innovative sensing enhancement techniques in making extremely sensitive piezoresistive transducers.

Bioinspired Superelastic Electroconductive Fiber for Wearable Electronics

Electroconductive fibers (E-fibers) with excellent flexibility and elasticity are crucial for the advancement of smart textiles for wearable electronics. However, the current metal-based conductive wires are not capable of satisfying the practical demands attributing to their limited stretchability and inferior antiabrasion ability. Herein, we report a superelastic and electroconductive fiber with a spring-like structure, inspired by the unique coiled tendril structures of climbing plants. The E-fiber is constructed by wrapping a flexible yet conductive carbon nanotube/polydimethylsiloxane (CNT/PDMS) composite yarn onto a polyester filament. In this system, the polyester filament provides mechanical robustness and stretchability, while the coiled CNT/PDMS composite yarn (C/P CY) offers sufficient conductivity. Notably, the as-fabricated E-fiber possesses high stretchability (165%), exceptional tensile force (660 cN), extraordinary antiabrasion ability, and remarkable electrical stability under various deformations. In addition, the great air permeability and electrothermal stability are also achieved, which are essential for comfortable wear and steady conduction. The developed E-fiber based on CNT composite wrapping yarn, together with its exceptional mechanical and electrical performance, provides the material with promising prospects for practical applications in wearable electronics.

Transient Characteristics of a Fluidic Device for Circulatory Jet Flow

In this paper, we report on the design, simulation, and experimental analysis of a miniaturized device that can generate multiple circulated jet flows. The device is actuated by a lead zirconate titanate (PZT) diaphragm. The flows in the device were studied using three-dimensional transient numerical simulation with the programmable open source OpenFOAM and was comparable to the experimental result. Each flow is verified by two hotwires mounted at two positions inside each consisting chamber. The experiment confirmed that the flow was successfully created, and it demonstrated good agreement with the simulation. In addition, a prospective application of the device as an angular rate sensor is also demonstrated. The device is robust, is minimal in size, and can contribute to the development of multi-axis fluidic inertial sensors, fluidic amplifiers, gas mixing, coupling, and analysis.

Highly Compressible Integrated Supercapacitor-Piezoresistance-Sensor System with CNT-PDMS Sponge for Health Monitoring

Rapid improvement of wearable electronics stimulates the demands for the matched functional devices and energy storage devices. Meanwhile, wearable microsystem requires every parts possessing high compressibility to accommodate large-scale mechanical deformations and complex conditions. In this work, a general carbon nanotube-polydimethylsiloxane (CNT-PDMS) sponge electrode is fabricated as the elementary component of the compressible system. CNT-PDMS sponge performs high sensitivity as a piezoresistance sensor, which is capable of detecting stress repeatedly and owns great electrochemical performance as a compressible supercapacitor which maintains stably under compressive strains, respectively. Assembled with the piezoresistance sensor and the compressible supercapacitor, such highly compressible integrated system can power and modulate the low-power electronic devices reliably. More importantly, attached to the epidermal skin or clothes, it can detect human motions, ranging from speech recognition to breathing record, thus showing feasibility in real-time health monitor and human-machine interfaces.
