Mercapto-functionalized ordered mesoporous silica-modified PVDF membrane for efficiently scavenging Cd2+ from water

In this study, (3-mercaptopropyl) triethoxysilane (MPTMS)-modified ordered mesoporous silica (OMS) materials were prepared using a post-grifting method, with MPTMS as the organic functionalized reagent. The OMS materials were analyzed by FT-IR spectra, N₂ sorption, and small angle X-ray scattering to evaluate their potential for scavenging Cd²⁺ from water. Moreover, a (3-mercaptopropyl) triethoxysilane-functionalized ordered mesoporous silica modified polyvinylidene fluoride (MPTMS-OMS/PVDF) membrane was synthesized using the solvent phase inversion method to remediate wastewater containing heavy metal ions. The MPTMS-OMS was characterized by a maximum specific surface area of 422 m²/g, high surface hydrophilicity, and high pure water flux. The MPTMS-OMS/PVDF exhibited a dynamic adsorption capacity for Cd²⁺ in water. At an MPTMS-OMS content of 5 wt%, the Cd²⁺ removal efficiency was 90%, whereas the pure PVDF showed no Cd²⁺ adsorption capacity. These results highlight the potential of the MPTMS-OMS/PVDF membrane to eliminate Cd²⁺ during the decontamination of aqueous streams containing low-concentrations of contaminants.

Recent progress in beetle-inspired superhydrophilic-superhydrophobic micropatterned water-collection materials

Biological creatures with unique surface wettability have long served as a source of inspiration for scientists and engineers. More specifically, certain beetle species in the Namib Desert have evolved to collect water from fog on their backs by way of wettability patterns, which attracted an ongoing interest in biomimetic studies. Bioinspired materials exhibiting extreme wetting properties, such as superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic surfaces, have attracted considerable attention because of their potential use in various applications. Combining these two extreme states of superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity on the same surface in precise two-dimensional micropatterns opens exciting new functionalities and possibilities for a wide variety of applications. In this review we briefly describe the water-harvesting mechanisms of a genus of Namib Desert beetle, Stenocarpa, consisting of the theory of wetting and transporting. Then we describe the methods for fabricating superhydrophilic-superhydrophobic patterns and highlight some of the newer and emerging applications of these patterned substrates that are currently being explored. Finally, we provide conclusions and outlook concerning the future development of bioinspired surfaces of patterned wettability.

Environmentally benign non-wettable textile treatments: A review of recent state-of-the-art

Among superhydrophobic materials, non-wettable textiles are probably the ones that come in contact or interact with the human body most frequently. Hence, textile treatments for water or oil repellency should be non-toxic, biocompatible, and comply with stringent health standards. Moreover, considering the volume of the worldwide textile industry, these treatments should be scalable, sustainable, and eco-friendly. Due to this awareness, more and more non-wettable textile treatments with eco-friendly processes and green or non-toxic chemicals are being adopted and reported. Although fluorinated alkylsilanes or fluorinated polymers with C8 chemistry (with ≥ 8 fluorinated carbon atoms) are the best performing materials to render textiles water or oil repellent, they pose substantial health and environmental problems and are being banned. For this reason, water/solvent-borne, C8-free vehicles for non-wettable treatment formulations are probably the only ones that can have commercialization prospects. Hence, researchers have come up with a variety of new, non-toxic, green formulations and materials to render fabrics liquid repellent that constitute the focus of this review paper. As such, this review article discusses and summarizes recent developments and techniques on various sustainable superhydrophobic treatments for textiles, with comparable performance and durability to formulations based on fluorinated C8 compounds. The current state-of-the-art technologies, potential commercialization prospects, and relevant limitations are discussed and summarized with examples. The review also attempts to indicate promising future strategies and new materials that can transform the process for non-wettable textiles into an all-sustainable technology.
