Development and characterization of novelly grown fire-resistant fungal fibers

This study conducted a comprehensive characterization and analyses on the fire-resistant behaviors of novel fungal fibers grown with substrate containing Silica (Si) source at multiple scales. At micro-scale, the results of SEM showed that silica affected the physiological activities of fungi, with the extent of effects depending upon its concentration. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra displayed the existence of Si–O–C chemical bonds in fungal fibers grown with Si source, indicating that Si source becomes a part of the structure of fungal fibers. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) of fungal fibers exhibit an early thermal decomposition of non-combustible components, which will potentially help release the thermal stress and mitigation of spalling when used in concrete. Compared with polypropylene (PP) fibers, fungal fibers have a lower thermal degradation rate, a higher residual weight, a lower heat release peak temperature, and less total heat of combustion; all of these indicate improved thermal stability and fire resistance, and a lower rate of function loss in case of a fire. Additionally, the thermal stability and fire resistance of fungal fibers were improved with the increase of Si source concentration in the nutrition medium. For example, addition of 2% Si source in the feeding substrate leads to a 23.21% increase in residual weight in TGA, and a 23.66 W/g decrease in peak heat release rate as well as a 2.44 kJ/g reduction in total heat of combustion in MCC. At laboratory scale, compared with PP fibers, fungal fibers grown with 2% Si source have a higher residual weight of 40.40%, a higher ignition temperature of 200.50 °C, and a declined flame height of 11.64 mm in real fire scenarios. Furthermore, only in the fungal fibers grown with Si source, partial burning occurred. In post-fire conditions, the microstructure of residual char from fungal fibers grown with higher content of Si source became denser, which would lead to a reduction of the fuel vapor release and heat transfer. FTIR spectra of residual char demonstrated that fungal fibers grown with Si source formed more stable chemical bonds with higher heat of chemical bond formation, contributing to improved thermal stability and fire resistance. Therefore, compared with traditional fibers used for fiber reinforced concrete, incorporating the new natural grown fibers will potentially further improve the fire resistance of concrete and mitigate the concrete spalling.

Remote-controllable and encryptable smart glasses: a photoresponsive azobenzene molecular commander determines the molecular alignments of liquid crystal soldiers

For the development of optically encryptable smart glass that can control the molecular alignment of liquid crystals (LCs), an azobenzene-based reactive molecule (ARM) capable of trans-cis photoisomerization is newly designed and synthesized. Photo-triggered LC-commandable smart glasses are successfully constructed by the surface functionalization technique using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTMS) coupling agent and an ARM. The surface functionalization with the ARM is verified by spectroscopic analysis and various observations including changes in the wettability and surface morphology. Using the ARM-treated substrate, the LC command cell which can effectively switch the molecular orientation of nematic LC (E7) by the irradiation of UV and visible light is demonstrated. The results of optical investigation demonstrate the directional correlation between light and photoisomerization, revealing the tilt mechanism of azobenzene units. The capability to control the molecular orientation of LCs remotely and selectively allows the development of remote-controllable and encryptable smart glasses.

Synthesis and characterization of novel fluoroterphenyls: self-assembly of low-molecular-weight fluorescent organogel

Nucleophilic aromatic substitution has been highly para selective on a range of functionalized pentafluorobenzenes. Here, we demonstrate the utility of nucleophilic aromatic substitution chemistry for the preparation of fluorinated fluorescent low-molecular-weight organogels. The molecular design, synthesis and photophysical performance of a new class of thermoreversible and fluorescent low-molecular-weight organogels from para-alkoxy-functionalized fluorinated terphenyls are described. Both CuI-catalyzed decarboxylative cross-coupling and nucleophilic aromatic substitution chemistry were used for the preparation of those highly fluorinated gelators in high yields and excellent purity via simple filtration, from the corresponding potassium fluorobenzoate salts and aryl iodides. Various fluorinated symmetrical and asymmetrical para terphenyls were prepared with various para terminal alkoxy tails. Those fluorinated terphenyls were characterized using X-ray crystallography, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, as well as ¹ H, ¹³ C, and ¹⁹ F nuclear magnetic resonance. UV-visible light absorbance and emission spectra of those new materials displayed a solvatochromic and solvatofluorochromic behaviour, respectively. Self-assembly of the produced fluorinated terphenyls occurred via cooperative π-π stacking and van der Waals interactions, which resulted in gelating various organic solvents. Scanning electron microscopy displayed the formation of fibre-like nanostructures. The cytotoxicity of some selected fluorinated symmetrical and asymmetrical para terphenyls was explored.

Synthesis and surface activity of photoresponsive hybrid surfactants containing both fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon chains

HYPOTHESIS

Hybrid surfactants containing both alkyl and fluoroalkyl chains within the same molecule where modification of the azobenzene group will enable us to switch the superhydrophobic nature with an external light source, and the optical behavior will vary depending on the structure of the hydrophobic chains.

EXPERIMENTS

Surface activity and its optically-induced variation of the azobenzene-modified hybrid surfactants were characterized using the surface tensiometry, UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy and theoretical calculation.

FINDINGS

The hybrid surfactants are superhydrophobic in nature reducing the surface tension of water to near 20 mN/m. Photo-isomerization of the azobenzene group induces a drastic surface tension variation (Δγ), and particularly the compositions containing the octyl-fluorocarbon chain exhibit remarkable Δγ as much as 30 mN/m which is even higher than that of the conventional surfactants (Δγ ≈ 14-20 mN/m). Theoretical calculation suggests significantly higher hydrophilicity of the cis isomer, causing the drastic switch in the surface activity. These results indicate the promise of the hybrid surfactants as efficient surface/interface manipulators.

Multi-responsive organo- and hydrogelation based on the supramolecular assembly of fluorocarbon- and hydrocarbon-containing hybrid surfactants

HYPOTHESIS

Novel photoresponsive hybrid surfactants, in which a combination of perfluoroalkyl and alkyl chains and cationic head groups are connected via azobenzene moieties, are excellent candidates for assembling low-molecular-weight organogels (LMOGs) with reversibly switchable viscoelasticities triggered by external stimuli.

EXPERIMENTS

The structure-composition-property relationships of gels assembled with the hybrid surfactants were investigated by UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy, SEM, XRD, and rheology.

FINDINGS

Hybrid surfactants containing perfluorohexyl chains with more than six carbons gelled in a variety of organic solvents at concentrations of less than a few percent. In particular, compositions with the perfluorooctyl and somewhat shorter hydrocarbon chains (C1-C4) gelled in both organic solvents and water. The gellable solvent species can be well grouped according to their solubility parameters, suggesting that gelation properties can be predicted from the chemical structure of the surfactant. Mechanical and structural investigations revealed that gel viscoelasticity can be reversibly altered by applying photo, shear, and heat stimuli, which is achieved through the formation and deformation of lamella-like molecular aggregates. The multi-responsive gelation and facile molecular design of the present hybrid surfactants will expand the fields in which fluorinated LMOGs can be applied.

Reversibly Softening and Stiffening Organogels Using a Wavelength-Controlled Disulfide-Diselenide Exchange

Wavelength-dependent light-responsive seleno-sulfide dynamic covalent bonds were used to prepare organogels with reversible changes in stiffness. The disulfide cross-link organogels prepared from norbornene-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-diNB) and poly(2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate-stat-mercaptoethyl acrylate) (PEG-diNB-poly(HPMA-stat-MEMA)) polymers underwent exchange reactions with 5,5'-diselenide-bis(2-aminobenzoic acid) upon irradiation with UV light. Following irradiation with visible light, the seleno-sulfide bonds were cleaved, reforming disulfide cross-links and the 5,5'-diselenide-bis(2-aminobenzoic acid). Reduction in G' with disulfide-diselenide exchange was consistent with that observed following a thiol-disulfide exchange reaction. Recovery of G' upon disulfide bond formation was 85-95% of the initial value in the as-prepared gel over five cycles of bond cleaving and reformation. This initial study shows the potential of the wavelength-controlled disulfide-diselenide chemistry to develop light-responsive reversible organogels. These organogels have the potential to be used in functional materials such as polymeric actuators or biomimetic soft robotics.

Multistimuli-Responsive Fluorescent Organogelator Based on Triphenylamine-Substituted Acylhydrazone Derivative

A new triphenylamine-based acylhydrazone derivative (TPAH-B8) was synthesized. TPAH-B8 could form organogels in cyclohexane through ultrasonic treatment. A typical gelation-induced fluorescence enhancement property was observed, which was attributed to the formation of J-aggregate in the gel state. More interestingly, TPAH-B8 exhibited multistimuli responsive behaviors. First, TPAH-B8 showed a solvatochromic effect, with the emission color changing from blue to cyan with the change in solvent from nonpolar cyclohexane to polar dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Second, TPAH-B8 showed a reversible mechanofluorochromism. The xerogel of TPAH-B8 emitted a blue fluorescence, while the fluorescence color changed to cyan after grinding. The cyan and blue colors could be repeated with the treatment of grinding and annealing, which was explored and ascribed to the transformation between crystalline and amorphous states. Third, TPAH-B8 revealed acidochromic property. The fluorescence color of TPAH-B8 in organogel and solid states could be switched by trifluoroacetic acid (TFA)/triethylamine (TEA). This work not only demonstrated the multistimuli-responsive fluorescent properties of TPAH-B8 but also offered an easy way to develop new kinds of multistimuli-responsive fluorescent materials.

A Natural Glycyrrhizic Acid-Tailored Light-Responsive Gelator

The construction of stimuli-responsive materials by using naturally occurring molecules as building blocks has received increasing attention owing to their bioavailability, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Herein, a symmetrical azobenzene-functionalized natural glycyrrhizic acid (trans-GAG) was synthesized and could form stable supramolecular gels in DMSO/H₂ O and MeOH/H₂ O. Owing to trans-cis isomerization, this gel exhibited typical light-responsive behavior that led to a reversible gel-sol transition accompanied by a variation in morphology and rheology. Additionally, this trans-GAG gel displayed a distinct injectable self-healing property and outstanding biocompatibility. This work provides a simple yet rational strategy to fabricate stimuli-responsive materials from naturally occurring, eco-friendly molecules.

Stronger Intermolecular Forces or Closer Molecular Spacing? Key Impact Factor Research of Gelator Self-Assembly Mechanism

The benzene ring of low-molecular-weight gelators provides strong intermolecular forces but increases molecular spacing during self-assembly. To explore both of the above influences on the gel properties, we synthesize two gelators (Glu-CBZ and Glu-DPA) consisting of the same terminal long side chain but different aliphatic functional groups. The aliphatic functional groups are carbobenzoxy group and diphenyl phosphate group. The self-assembly driving forces, self-organization patterns, network morphologies, rheological properties, and the influences of solvents are researched through ¹H NMR spectra, Fourier transform infrared spectra, field-emission scanning electron microscopy images, rheological characterizations curves, tube-inversion experiment, and calculation of van't Hoff plots. The results show that the carbobenzoxy group of Glu-CBZ makes molecules pack more tightly such that it improves the gel properties during static equilibrium. Whereas the diphenyl phosphate group of Glu-DPA provides stronger intermolecular forces, performing outstandingly during dynamic equilibrium. It is advantageous to further investigate the competitive relationship in gel system between the increased number of functional groups and the consequent steric effect.

Pendant-Type Helicene Oligomers with p-Phenylene Ethynylene Main Chains: Synthesis, Reversible Formation of Ladderlike Bimolecular Aggregates, and Control of Intramolecular and Intermolecular Aggregation

Pendant-type (P)-helicene oligomers with p-phenylene ethynylene main chains up to a tetramer were synthesized by a building block method. The (P)-tetramer reversibly formed a ladderlike bimolecular aggregate upon cooling and disaggregated upon heating in (trifluoromethyl)benzene. Two bis(tetramer)s, in which two (P)-tetramers were connected by hexadecamethylene linkers, were also synthesized. The head-to-tail bis(tetramer) formed an intramolecular aggregate, and the head-to-head bis(tetramer) formed an intermolecular aggregate in toluene. The results suggest the antiparallel aggregation structure of the pendant-type (P)-tetramers. The structure of the linker was proven to be effective in controlling intramolecular and intermolecular aggregations.
